Raymond H. Heine

Raymond H. Heine, 77, of Duluth Heights died Thursday, March 22, 2001, in Miller Dwan Medical Center.

Ray was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Faribault, Minn., to Herbert and Anne (Paschke) Heine. He was a graduate of Bethlehem Academy in Faribault. Ray was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He married Dolores Obermiller Sept. 30, 1950, and they moved to Duluth in 1952. He worked as a optician, retiring in 1988 as the manager of Kindy-Duling Optical in Duluth. After retiring, Ray worked part time at Wards Optical and at Sears Optical.

Ray was a very active member of St. Joseph's Church in Duluth Heights, serving as a trustee and an usher. He also was a member of St. Joseph's Plus 55 Club, the West Duluth American Legion Post 71, the Faribault Last Man's Club, and he was a former member of Elks Lodge 133 in Duluth.

Ray was preceded in death by his 9-year-old daughter, Donna in 1963.

Ray is survived by his wife, Dolores; daughters Mary (Brad) Berglund, of Burnsville, Minn., Jane Lubansky of Phoenix and Joyce Heine of Richfield, Minn.; a grandson, Steven; sisters Helen Conrad of Dundas, Minn., and Phyllis Ballstadt of Medford, Minn.

Visitation: 3-5 p.m. Sunday with 4 p.m. wake prayers in Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in St. Joseph's Church, Duluth Heights. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Archie W. Mattinen

Archie W. Mattinen, 83, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in the Franciscan Health Center.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry; and a sister, Mary Jane Kolu.

He is survived by brothers Ned and Robert Mattinen.

There will be no services. Inurnment in a Martin Lake location. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Evelyn E. Williams

Evelyn E. Williams, 83, of 58th Ave West passed away Thursday, March 22, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

She was born in Atkinson, Minn., Dec. 9, 1917, to James and Elizabeth Lee. She lived in Proctor for many years before moving to Duluth in 1959. She worked at Jeno's for several years. She was a member of the West Duluth Moose Lodge 1478, Women of The Moose and a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Karen Frankfourth; a son-in-law, Robert Frankfourth; a granddaughter, Brenda Frankfourth; her husband, Clarence in 1986; sisters Blanch Hanson and Loretta Lightbody; and a brother, Edwin Lee.

She is survived by a son, James (Connie) of Hermantown; a brother, James "Bud" (Mariam) Lee of Proctor; sisters Bernice Demenge of Cloquet, Dorothy Munter of Carlton and Gladys Carlson of Superior; grandchildren Devin Frankfourth, James Williams, Jeffrey (Leah) Williams, Debbie (Gary) Vanneste and Diane Miettinen; great-grandchildren Dellery, Andrew, Allison and Shaelyn.

Graveside service 11 a.m Monday in Oneota cemetery. At Evelyn's request, there will be no funeral service. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Francis J. "Sarge" Dunn

Francis J. "Sarge" Dunn, 71, of Iron River died Thursday, March 22, 2001, in his home following a lengthy illness.

Sarge is survived my his wife, Mary; a son, Timothy Dunn; a brother, Donald Dunn; a sister, Marian Buffa; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5 p.m. Monday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Iron River, with a scripture service at 5:30 and memorial service at 7 p.m. Interment in St. Michael's cemetery, Iron River. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior.

Ruth Emily Baker Fish

Ruth Emily Baker Fish, 80, of Spirit Lake Manor, formerly of Silver Bay and Hibbing, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.

Service: Saturday in Assembly of God Church, Beaver Bay. A full obituary will appear in Wednesday's paper. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Ethelyn Watterson

Ethelyn Watterson, 93, of Minnesota Avenue died Saturday, March 17, 2001, in her home.

She was born in Champion Mills, Ark., on Feb. 3, 1908, to Frederick and Eva Clough Champion and had been a Duluth resident since 1925. Ethelyn was the former owner and operator of Champion Sisters Beauty Shop, and also owned and operated the cigar stand in Spalding Hotel. After that, she was employed by St. Luke's Hospital in the housekeeping department.

She was a former member of First United Methodist Church, AARP and the Senior Coalition.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by a son, Fred of Duluth; a daughter, Claudia (Tom) Carpenter of Arcadia, La.; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; nieces Betty Burke and Nancy Matter; and a nephew, Jim Champion.

Memorial service at a later date. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Sister Ellen (formerly Sister Philomene) O'Connor, OSB

Educator

Sister Ellen (formerly Sister Philomene) O'Connor, OSB, 92, of the St. Scholastica Monastery died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in the monastery.

Sister Ellen entered the Duluth Benedictine community in 1924 and professed monastic vows in 1926.

She was born in Excelsior, Wis., on Sept. 4, 1908, the eldest of the seven children of John and Mary (Killeen) O'Connor. Before her third birthday, the family moved to LaMoure, N.D., where they remained until she was 8 years old. In 1916, the O'Connors moved to Pine River, Minn. Sister Ellen attended Pine River Public School from second through ninth grade. Her secondary education was completed in Villa Sancta Scholastica High School, Duluth.

Known in religion as "Sister Philomene, " in later years she reverted to her baptismal name of "Ellen." Sister Ellen took education courses at Duluth Normal Teachers' Training School, received a bachelor's degree in history from the College of St. Scholastica and a master's degree in American and European history from Loyola University, Chicago. Additional graduate studies were taken at Athenaseum of Ohio and University of Dayton, Ohio. Sister held life certificates in Ohio for junior high school education and for elementary school administration.

Most of Sister Ellen's long, active career was spent in education. She taught in the following schools: St. Timothy's in Chicago, and St. James Cathedral High School and Stanbrook Hall High School, both in Duluth. Sister was principal and convent superior in Our Mother of Sorrows in Cincinnati and Assumption in Hibbing, and tutored in and coordinated at the Learning Assistance Center in the College of St. Scholastica.

For many summers Sister directed teacher training programs in the College of St. Scholastica, Teachers' College and University of Cincinnati, Oxford University, Miami, Ohio, and the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn. Sister Ellen spent 15 years in St. Ann's Residence, Duluth as admissions director/assistant administrator.

In 1995, Sister Ellen was awarded the Tassie McNamara Award in recognition of her day-to-day living of Benedictine tradition at the College of St. Scholastica. Sister had been a member of the American Catholic Sociological Association, American Catholic Psychological Association, Charles Carroll Forum, American Benedictine Academy and St. Louis County Historical Association.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John, Lloyd and Carl.

She is survived by her sisters, Frances Trask of Penn Valley, Calif., Marie Bump of St. Paul and Leah Behme of New Hope, Minn.; and many other relatives.

Wake service: 7 p.m. today with visitation following until 9 p.m. and Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, St. Scholastica Monastery. The Rev. J. Whitney Evans as presider and homilist. Interment in Gethsemane cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Scholastica Monastery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.

Mary Margaret "Peggy" Clausen

Mary Margaret "Peggy" Clausen of Hillsborough, Calif., died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Hillsborough.

Peggy was born in Duluth June 12, 1920, and received her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Minnesota Duluth. She taught in Roosevelt and San Fernando high schools in the Los Angeles School District before moving to Hillsborough in 1963. She was a beloved wife, loving mother and adored grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, A.W. Clausen; sons Eric David of California and Mark Winship of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren Alexander, Sean, Kellan, Nicholas and Anastasia Rose Clausen; sisters Susan Bowen of Los Angeles and Sally Roug of Atlanta; and a brother, Donald Crassweller of Duluth.

A memorial service was March 19 in Burlingame, Calif. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Peggy's memory to UCSF Alzheimer's Memory and Aging Center, 350 Parnassus Ave., Suite 800, San Francisco, CA 94143-1207.

Diane L. (Moe) Mecklin

Diane L. (Moe) Mecklin, 47, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., died suddenly Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in North Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Duluth Dec. 26, 1953, to Robert G. and Beverly A. Moe. Diane graduated from Proctor High School and St. Luke's School of Nursing. She received her bachelor of arts in science at the College of St. Francis, Minneapolis and her master's degree in management and administration. She worked in St. Luke's and Miller Dwan hospitals in Duluth, North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis and currently in Fairview Home Care and Hospice in Minneapolis.

On Dec. 4, 1976, she married James Mecklin in Duluth. Her greatest accomplishment was being a breast cancer survivor. Diane was a dedicated and caring nurse, and she loved the outdoors and spent much time in their property in Wascott.

She will be sadly missed and is survived by her husband, James; her parents, Robert and Beverly of Solway Township; brothers Scott (Lenora) and John (Cindy), both of Solway Township; a sister, Cheryl (Bill) Hallamek of Wrenshall; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 4831 Grand Ave., Duluth.

Betty I. Engstrom

Betty I. Engstrom, 87, formerly of Old Howard Mill Road died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.

She was born Oct. 23, 1916, in Duluth to John and Christine (Rasperson) Refseth. By age 14, both of Betty's parents had died, and she went to live with her uncle, Andrew Refseth and his family. She attended school in Duluth. In 1927, she moved to Summit, N.J., to live with another cousin and attended business college in Summit.

Betty married Carl Engstrom in 1936 in Summit. They also lived in Hillsdale, N.Y., and South St. Paul before returning to Duluth in 1985. She was a secretary for Bell Laboratories in Summit for 40 years, retiring in 1969.

Betty was a member of the former Bethesda Lutheran Church, Daughters of Norway in Duluth, Faith Lutheran Church, Trotsig Lodge 99 Independent Order of Vikings in Summit and Telephone Pioneers. She was an avid bowler and bowled in the Bell Lab League for many years. She was a talented craftsperson, she had an extensive collection of needlepoint pictures and donated hand-knit and crocheted items to hospitals.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Carl in 1995.

Betty is survived by a niece, Christine Lewis of Nashville, Tenn.; and many cousins in Duluth, Summit and on the East Coast.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial in Park Hill cemetery.

Florence Collins

Florence Collins, 85, of Heritage Apartments, Duluth, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor.

Florence was born March 29, 1915, in Buhl to Luka and Melissa Tomkovich. She grew up in northern Wisconsin and married James Fredric Collins Dec. 18, 1943. Florence worked at Diamond Tool and Horseshow during World War II, and later at Leaf's Corner Store, Coffee Shop and Post Office in New Duluth.

She was a member of House of Hope Presbyterian Ladies Aid for over 25 years, serving as treasurer for many years. Florence was an active member of Duluth's Senior Coalition.

Florence was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. A wonderful baker, she enjoyed sharing her talent with neighbors and friends. She also loved needlework and created over 60 crewel embroidery pictures for her family since retiring. Her beautiful pictures will always be treasured.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; an infant sister, Amelia; and a sister, Ann Mentz.

Florence is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Larson of Hermantown; a son, Patrick Collins of Duluth; sisters Rose Trudeau of Green Bay, Wis., and Marie Holman of Omaha, Neb.; granddaughters Deanna Collins of Duluth, Shawn (Eric) Baker of Pike Lake and Aimee (Michael) Santoriello of Bethpage, N.Y.; a grandson, Daniel Christen of Cloquet; great-granddaughters Breanne and Mikayla Baker; and several nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to St. Mary's Hospital staff, Dr. Chapman for his concern and guidance and to the staff in Lake Haven Manor for their loving care of our mother and grandmother.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Pastor Joseph Koranda officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Friends of the Library, c/o Duluth Public Library. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.
