Arthur "Art" Sylvester Posch

Arthur "Art" Sylvester Posch, 83, formerly of Arbutus Drive, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Art was born to Albert and Frances (Sheitz) Posch in Little Falls, Minn., and lived in Duluth for 60 years. Art was a former manager of Faith Haven and Pennel Park Commons. Art was in the Army Seabees during World War II and was a member of the VFW and St. Joseph's Church of Duluth Heights.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marion, in 1989; and a stepson, Gerald Krause.

Art is survived by his brother, Ben (Marie) of Little Falls; his sister, Alvina (Ed) VandnHeivel of Little Falls; stepchildren Bonnie (Curt) Miller of Duluth and Don (Lois) Krause of St. Paul; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

No service. Inurnment in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Cheryl Lynn Arnold

Cheryl Lynn Arnold, 44, of Duluth died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001.

Survivors include her mother, Donna Arnold; twin sister, Carol (Richard) Smith; brothers Pierre Jr. (Sandi) and Jeffrey (Tamny) Arnold; many relatives and friends; and best friend, Moses.

Memorial service: 4 p.m. Sunday in Living Faith Christian Center, 633 N. 57th Ave. W.

Lawrence E. "Larry" Jacobs

Lawrence E. "Larry" Jacobs, 74, of Huntington, Texas, formerly of Duluth, passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in Huntington.

He was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Edford Township, Ill. He served in the Navy during World War II. He also sailed as a Great Lakes seaman for U.S. Steel for 28 years, retiring in 1988. He and his wife, Carol, then retired to Huntington where they had lived for the past 19 years.

Larry will be greatly missed by his wife of 47 years, Carol; daughters Judy (Larry) Johnson of Blaine, Minn., Tammy (Gary) Alcarez of Hemet, Calif., and Kathryn Mirtica of Duluth; sons Michael of Two Harbors and Marc of Duluth; a brother, Edward of East Moline, Ill.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

We will miss you very much, Dad and Grandpa. We love you.

Services were held Feb. 20 in Huntington.

Larry W. Haugland Sr.

Larry W. Haugland Sr., 83, formerly of Seventh Street, Proctor, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 17, 1918, in Midway Township to John J. and Ella (Olson) Haugland. A lifelong Proctor and Duluth resident, Larry was an employee of Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 43 years, retiring as welder foreman in 1978. He married Ruth Stafford Jan. 14, 1961, in Proctor. He was a life member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Union. Larry loved his family and enjoyed the cabin and fishing at Pequaywan Lake and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth, Feb. 3, 2000; and a brother, Bud.

Survivors include sons Larry Haugland Jr. of Duluth, Timothy (Sue) Sullivan of Stillwater, Minn., Paul (June) Sullivan of Eveleth, Peter (Claudia) Sullivan of Proctor and Patrick (Peggy) Sullivan of Cromwell; a daughter, Peggy (Clarence) Douville of Wrenshall; grandchildren Steven, Ryan, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Jamie, Nicole, Maria and Christina; and several nieces and nephews.

Gathering of family and friends: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Monday in Fond du Lac Community Church, 13104 W. Sixth St., Pastor Jim Woldhuis officiating. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave W., 624-5745.

Lee L. Burnes

Lee L. Burnes, 74, of West Morgan Street died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center with his loving family at his side.

He was born May 3, 1926, in Minneapolis to Ernest Fredrick and Cynthia (Moore) Burnes. He graduated from Breckenridge High School in Breckenridge, Minn. He married Jane Sprenger on Feb. 11, 1953, and they moved to Duluth where he worked for Mathison Tire and Firestone. Later he was co-owner of Royal Garage in Duluth. He went to work for Como Oil until retiring in 1989. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War at Chosin Reservoir.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Duluth Heights. He was a life member of VFW Post 137 in Duluth and a former member of Moose 505. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and watching sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Burnes.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jane; children Debbie Ojala of Duluth, Robert (Patty) Burnes of Duluth, Vicki (Mike) Nelson of Gresham, Ore., and Brenda (Ed) Simon of Duluth; grandchildren Jim and Rick Ojala, Sarah and Brian Nelson, Ed and Kimberly Simon, and Pam and Michelle Burnes; a brother, Fred (Merle) Burnes of Duluth; a sister, Geraldine (Roger) Reger of Minneapolis; and a special cousin, Beverly Moore of Fergus Falls, Minn.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. today with 5 p.m. wake prayers in Dougherty Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 1 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Duluth Heights. Military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second Street.

Floyd R. Freeman

Floyd R. Freeman, 81, of Minnetonka, Minn., passed away Monday, April 23, 2001.

He was born Nov. 24, 1919, in Duluth to Rex and Hannah (Hall) Freeman. He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Floyd is survived by his sons, John (Margaret) of Twig and Doug of Duluth; a daughter, Maxine Haus of Two Harbors; brothers Homer (Marion) of Nevada, Rolland (Merelyn) of Duluth and John (Pat) of Alabama; sisters A. Thompson of Arizona, Melba (Wally) Regelin of Wisconsin and Meredith (Bob) of Two Harbors; grandchildren Kandi (Paul) Banks and Mike (Denise) Freeman, both of Superior; great-grandchildren Courtney and Dane Banks, Griffin, Jordan and Hannah Freeman; a step-grandson, Matthew McIntosh of Twig; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jeff Lamtere of Minnetonka.

No service at Floyd's request.

Trygve "Trig" J. Johnson

Trygve "Trig" J. Johnson, 88, of East Niagara Street died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in his home.

He was born Feb. 20, 1913, to Alfred and Gertrude (Haugerud) Johnson. He married Bertha Kniep on Nov. 26, 1934, in Duluth. He was self-employed, doing contract hauling for Mitchell Oil and later for Como Oil, retiring in 1973.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Teamsters Retiree Club. Trig enjoyed traveling, bowling, woodworking, snowmobiling, camping and UMD hockey. He was a very kind and gentle man and will be sadly missed.

Trig is preceded in death by his wife, Bertha in 1994; a son, Lee "Brod" in 1996; his parents; brothers Arthur and Lester; and a sister, Gerda Dembick.

He is survived by daughters Linda (Tim) Wolff of Duluth and Shirley (Clyde) Norberg of Two Harbors; a sister, Lorraine Mell of Duluth; grandchildren Sarah and Brandon Wolff, Jeffrey (Kathy), Jerry (Carmen) and Larry Norberg, and Alan and Scott Johnson; six great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and his caregiver, Beth "The Girl" Kraml.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today and service 11 a.m. Thursday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Memorials to First Lutheran Church would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

James Andrew Anderson

James Andrew Anderson, 67, formerly of Duluth died Monday, April 23, 2001, in his home in Mount Vernon, Ill.

He was born in Duluth on Oct. 18, 1933, to parents Andrew and Rose Anich Anderson. James was a 1952 graduate of Denfeld High School and the Dunwoody Institute. While in Duluth, he was a building contractor who built many homes throughout the area. For the last 25 years he had been the owner and operator of the Mount Vernon Motel in Illinois.

Jim was an avid tennis player, old car collector and pilot. He was the first born of a set of twins, being born just before midnight with his brother, Jerry, following 33 minutes later. Consequently, even though they were twins, they celebrated different birthdays.

His parents preceded him in death.

Jim is survived by sons Jerrid A. (Danielle) of Roseville, Minn. and Jason R. of Woodbury, Minn., his twin brother, Jerry of Duluth; sisters Florence (Carl) Eisenach of Duluth and Evelyn (Bob) Pecore of Mankato, Minn.; grandchildren Jack and Hannah Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial in Oneota cemetery.

Terry Alan DeFoe

Terry Alan DeFoe, 34, of Duluth passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001, in his home.

Terry was born in Duluth on June 27, 1966, to Leonard and Edith (Peterson) DeFoe Sr. He was a surgical medical technician. Terry attended college for two years working on his Liberal Arts degree.

He was a member of the Fond du Lac Band, Lake Superior Chippewa. Terry's hobbies were art, traveling, outdoor activities and tribal politics.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Terry is survived by his uncle, Leo Peterson, on his mother's side; his uncle, Edward DeFoe and an aunt, Ruth (Peterson) DeFoe, on his father's side; his brothers, Leonard (Suzy) Jr., Reginald (Veronica) Sr., Ricky (Michelle), and Michael and Melvin DeFoe; sisters Cheryl and Cindy DeFoe; eight nephews; four nieces; and three great nieces.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today in Barr Brothers-Handevit Funeral Home, 900 Washington Ave., Cloquet, (218) 879-4636. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service in St. Mary & Joseph's Church, 1225 Mission Rd., Sawyer. Interment in Sawyer cemetery. Luncheon to follow interment in the old Sawyer Center.

Carl R. Lunke

Carl R. Lunke, 89, formerly of Alexander Road, Hermantown, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Oct. 16, 1911, in Duluth to John and Alma (Johnson) Lunke. He was a graduate of Denfeld High School. He married Alma Colen in 1937 in Duluth. He had worked at the Coolerator plant, the match factory and in construction. He was a custodian for Hermantown Public Schools until he retired.

Carl played the banjo in Alexander's Funtime Band at senior centers and nursing homes, where he also did other volunteer work. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He and Alma enjoyed dancing, traveling and spending time at the cabin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma in 1991; brothers, Alfred and George Lunke; a sister, Myrtle Schaefer; and a great-grandson, Jacob Schneekloth.

He is survived by daughters Arlene (Thomas) Peterson of Lake Park, Minn., and Dorothy (Ron) Thilmany of Cloquet; sons Edward J. (Mary) of Hermantown and Dennis (Claudia) of Duluth; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday and service 2:30 p.m. Friday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Burton J. Swanson

Burton J. Swanson, 82, of West Eighth Street, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, in Lake Haven Nursing Home.

He was born in Duluth and grew up in Fergus Falls, Minn., graduating from Fergus Falls High School in 1937. Burt served in the Navy for 6 years and during World War II. He served on the attack transport USS Barnett, which was the lead ship in the initial assault on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He received a special commendation for his part as warrant officer. It was his duty to see that troops were loaded aboard amphibious landing craft for the invasion and was cited for performing his task "with swiftness and without incident." In 1945 Burt returned home and worked at Curly's Bar until he retired as manager in 1980.

He was a member of West Duluth American Legion Post 71. He had been an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church, serving as trustee for many years, and had also been very gracious in driving many people to church on Sundays and home again.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Arthur and Barbara Swanson; and a sister, Blanche Woldmoe.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella; a son, Craig (Nancy) Swanson of Shakopee, Minn.; a daughter, Barbara (William) Abalan of Duluth; sisters Mildred Day of Rockville, N.Y., Genevieve Earle of Iowa City, Iowa, and Barbara (Allan) Snowberg of Fergus Falls, Minn.; grandchildren Mark and Jennifer Abalan, and Aaron (Lisa) and Ryan Swanson; and great-grandchildren Riley Ann Swanson and Isaiah Abalan.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Bell Brothers Chapel. Service 11 a.m. Saturday in Asbury United Methodist Church, 6822 Grand Ave. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Family prefers memorials directed to Asbury United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Marjorie "Margie" Jean Bartlett

Marjorie "Margie" Jean Bartlett, 75, of Burnsville, Minn., passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 3, 2001.

A native of Duluth, Margie owned and operated Ann's Grocery Store until 1987, when she retired and moved to Burnsville to be with her family. We will miss her smile and her beautiful eyes, for she has touched many people in her life. We will love her forever.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Joseph and Ann Natalie; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucy and Pete Iallonardo; and her former husband, John Bartlett.

She is survived by her loving daughter and best friend, Natalie "Susie", a son, Michael "Mickey" and daughter-in law, Char Bartlett; adoring grandchildren Ryan Bartlett and Kelly (Jeff) Schuller; nephews Monty (Jean) Ferguson and Scott Ferguson; a niece, Lisa Ferguson; an aunt, Joanne Krewinski; and an uncle, Nick (Betty) Perella.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savage, Minn. Private interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to family or donor's choice.
