Lois M. Shovein

Lois M. Shovein, 77, of Proctor died peacefully Tuesday, April 3, 2001.

She was born in Duluth on May 5, 1923, and lived in Carlton and Duluth until 1987. She then moved to Leesburg, Fla. Lois spent the last month with her children in Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Shovein; and a brother, Neil Bilsey.

She will be dearly missed by her children, Michael (Mary), Gayle (Michael) Walkowiak, Daniel, Sandra (Tim) Oliver, and Jack D. (Polly); grandchildren Matthew, Ross, Mikenzie, Josh, Allison, Christopher, Patrick, Zachary and Chloe; and a sister June (Vern) Larsen.

Visitation: 2 until the 3 p.m. service today in David Lee Funeral Home, Wayzata, Minn. Burial 1 p.m. Saturday in Oneota cemetery.

Charles W. Kocjancich

Charles W. Kocjancich, 76, of Duluth, formerly of Aurora, died Monday, April 2, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Facility.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Rodney Kesti of Shell Lake, Wis.

Visitation: 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. service Thursday in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Aurora. Father Joseph Sirba as celebrant. Burial with military honors accorded by Aurora American Legion Post 241 in Forest Hill cemetery, Aurora. Arrangments by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora.

Martha C. Godfrey

Martha C. Godfrey, 77, of Duluth died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

She was born in Duluth on Jan. 15, 1924, to William and Sophia (Lewandowski) Maciejeski. She was a lifelong Duluth resident. She had attended Central High School and had worked as a clerk in Newman's Pharmacy until retirement.

Martha was a member of St. James Catholic Church, St. Margaret's Guild, the Lady Forester's and VFW Women's Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, playing bingo, spending time with her grandchildren and was very active in St. James Parish.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, and a brother, Edward Maciejeski.

She is survived by a son, Jeffery (Mary) Godfrey of Duluth, daughters Susan (John) Bruederle of Lombard, Ill., and Jacqueline Godfrey and Monica (Bob) Hallfrisch, both of Duluth; brothers Raymond (Millie) Maciejeski of Duluth and Joseph (Lucky) Maciejeski of Downey, Calif.; sisters Mary Ann (Jerry) Viktora of Two Harbors and Frances Hansen of Downey; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with 6:30 p.m. rosary recitation in Foley Chapel. Mass of Christian burial 9 a.m. Wednesday in St. James Catholic Church. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Mary's Hospice. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.

G. Russell Olcott

G. Russell Olcott, 89, formerly of West Fourth Street died Monday, April 16, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospice.

He was born July 20, 1911, in Cumberland, Wis., to Guy and Alma (Higlee) Olcott. He was a Duluth resident for most of his life and had worked at Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1972. He married Doris E. Brockman on March 16, 1934, in Barnum. He had attended Salem Covenant Church, was a member of Diamond Tool Retirees and a former member of the National Rifle Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Doris, in 1987.

Survivors include his children, Gene Curtis (Janet) and Steven (Linda), both of Duluth, and Margie (Dick) Randolph of Hermantown; an aunt, Ruth Coggan of Glendale, Calif.; grandchildren Jim (Chris) Olcott, Bonnie (Allan) Boyhtari, Todd, Brian and Michael Olcott, Jason Randolph, Heather (Bryan) Anderson and Danielle Randolph; and great-grandchildren Ross and Glen Olcott, Alissa and Alec Boyhtari and Mackenzie Randolph.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in Bell Brothers Chapel. The Rev. Paul Anderson officiating. Burial in Bethany cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W. 624-5745.

Mary Lampson Berg

Mary Lampson Berg, 96, of Duluth died Monday, April 16, 2001, in Nopeming Care Center.

She was born Aug. 25, 1904, in Cape Broyle, Newfoundland, to John and Theresa (Cashin) Hussey. She came to this country with her family in 1911, settling in Duluth. She was a member of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Laird Lampson in 1962; and her second husband, Herbert Berg in 1988.

She is survived by daughters Virginia Lampson of Philadelphia and Barbara (Dick) Stoner of Moundsview, Minn; six half-sisters; two half-brothers; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in Forest Hill cemetery Chapel, 2516 Woodland Ave., Duluth. Gifts of remembrance may be made to Nopeming Care Center, 2650 Nopeming Road, Duluth, MN 55810. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Bernard Edward "Bernie" Schilling

Bernard Edward "Bernie" Schilling, 95, of College Street, formerly of Birchwood Drive, died Monday, April 16, 2001, in Aftenro Home.

He was born April 21, 1905, in Redwing, Minn., to Charles P. and Frieda M. (Kroehn) Schilling. He moved to Duluth in 1942, to Minneapolis in 1956, to Harrisburg, Pa., in 1966, and returned to Duluth in 1970, when he retired from the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, after 30 years of service.

He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Glen Avon Masonic Lodge, American Federation of Government Employees, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He also served as president of the Aftenro Home Resident Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Grace, on March 29, 1996.

Survivors include his son, B. Hartley (Donna) of Duluth; his daughter, Barbara G. (Roger) Kolquist of Gordon, Wis., and Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren Hartley (Carmen Olejniczak) Schilling, Dawn (John Guttermann) Schilling, Scott (Jody) Kolquist, Kim (Dan) Nahan and Dr. Kathryn Kolquist; and six great-grandchildren.

Service: Tentatively set for 1 p.m. Friday with visitation one hour prior to service in Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Rowland H. "Roy" Nelson

Retired treasurer of DM&IR; Railway

Rowland H. "Roy" Nelson, 88, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in his home on Woodland Avenue.

He was the retired treasurer of the DM&IR; Railway.

Roy was born in Manchester, England, of Scottish parents, on July 26, 1912. His education began in Edinburgh, Scotland, continued in Bermuda and New York City. He graduated from Columbia College, Columbia University, New York City with a B.A. in English language and literature in 1934. He was on the business staff of the Colombia Daily Spectator and performed as a principal in the Columbia Varsity Shows for four years. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and elected to Senior Sachem Society in 1934. In 1937 he graduated from the New York School of Traffic and Transportation.

Mr. Nelson went to work for U.S. Steel in 1936 as a temporary office boy, and retired 36 years later as treasurer of the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway. He spent the war years as traffic manager of Geneva Steel Co., Geneva, Utah. After returning to the corporate headquarters in New York City for seven years, he was transferred to DM&IR; as assistant to the vice president. He was elected to the position of treasurer in 1957 and retired in September 1970. During his tenure as treasurer he attended various courses and seminars at Cornell University and the American Management Association. He was a member of the Association of American Railroads, Treasury Division, serving as treasurer, secretary, and chairman of the Western Section.

Roy married Everdeen Rozema July 1939. Evie died in 1992.

He is survived by his brother, John Nelson of North Carolina; daughters Ellie (Norm) Sanders of Evansville, Ind., and Peg (Roger) Johnson of Duluth; grandchildren Meg Miura of Minneapolis, William Rowland (Jennifer) Burdett of Lindenhurst, Ill., Debra (Michael) Mitchell and Quentin Nelson (Tonya) Roth of Duluth; and great-grandchildren Morgan and Omri Mitchell and Nolan Burdett.

The Nelsons were founders and directors of the Duluth Light Opera Company from 1952 through 1989. Roy made a return appearance in "Trial by Jury" in 1996 as the DLOC returned to active performance under the direction of his daughter, Peg Johnson. Roy was a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church (UCC) where he was an active member of the choir. He served as board member and treasurer of Matinee Musicale, and was a founding member of the Duluth Scottish Heritage Association where he also served as treasurer and a longtime board member.

Mr. Nelson was an active member of the civic community as well. He was a member of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Safety Committee and served a term on the chamber's board of directors. He taught the Minnesota Safety Council's defensive driving course. For 20 years he delivered Meals On Wheels as a volunteer driver.

Celebration of Roy's life: 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2001, in Pilgrim Congregational Church, 2310 E. Fourth St., Duluth, 55812. Scottish attire is encouraged. Inurnment in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service. Memorials may be made to the Duluth Light Opera Company in care of Jody Ondich, treasurer, at 4411 Luverne St., Duluth, MN 55804.

Mildred Ingrid Johnson

Mildred Ingrid Johnson, 89, of Arrowhead Road passed away in the loving arms of her children Thursday, April 26, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.

Born in Rainy River, Ontario, Canada, on Nov. 22, 1911, to John and Marine Grande, "Millie" spent 81 of her 89 years calling Duluth "home." Here, she met and married Ingolf "Pops" Johnson in 1931 and had four children. She spent many happy years at home caring for her children until deciding to go to work at St. Luke's Hospital, where she worked for 15 years.

Millie spent a lifetime enjoying being with people, especially her family. Her ability to comfort, her compassion and her unique sense of humor were all a part of what made her the wonderful woman that she was. She was truly loved. Her memory and amazing spirit will forever be alive in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Millie was preceded in death by her brother, Alfred Grande; and her husband, Ingolf Johnson.

She is survived by her children, Donald W. Johnson of Reno, Nev., Marian (Marshall) Stenersen of Duluth, Sandra (Gerry) Nervick of Duluth, and Carole (Leonard) Schire of Cottage Grove, Minn.; 12 grandchildren (with one on the way); 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Millie spent the last two years of her life living at the Benedictine Health Center, where she was fortunate to have had "years added to her life." Thanks to her special friend "Dan" (Darryl) and many other loving caregivers, Millie was truly blessed with extraordinary care.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. today in Johnson Mortuary, 514 E. Third St., and continuing from 9 until the 10 a.m. service Monday in Kenwood Lutheran Church, Pastor Brad Jensen officiating. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Richard L. Meister

Richard L. Meister, 85, of East Superior Street died Friday, April 27, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

He was born in Minneapolis to Albert and Catherine Meister and was a longtime Duluth resident. He retired in 1980 as produce manager for Loop Food Store. Mr. Meister was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 530th Medical Company. He was an active member of St. Michael's Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann in 1995.

Survivors include sons Thomas (Gail) and Charles (Lynn) of Duluth; a daughter, Marilyn (Carl) Fischer of Gainesville, Fla., a brother, Bernard of Grand Forks, N.D.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday with 6 p.m. wake prayers in Dougherty Funeral Home. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.

Harold G. Ulshafer

Harold G. Ulshafer, 83, of Duluth, passed away Friday, April 27, 2001 in Viewcrest Health Center.

He was born Nov. 16, 1917, in Duluth to Eric and Anna Ulshafer. He worked for Diamond Tool as a machine operator for 39 years until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and of the Golden Arrow Travelers Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Jean Anderson.

He is survived by a son, Terry (Kathleen) Ulshafer of Hermantown; daughters Bonnie (Larry) Causin of Cloquet, Nancy (David) Dahl of Duluth; a brother, Archie of Bethlehem, Pa.; a special friend, Ann Maloney; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; three step grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lil Ulshafer; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Charlie Flynn officiating. Interment in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Richard (Schmitz) Marshall

Richard (Schmitz) Marshall, 69, of St. Paul formerly of Duluth passed away Friday, April 20, 2001.

He is survived by his children, Laurie Occhino, Jeff Schmitz, John Schmitz, Janyce Nestrud and Julianne Walcheski; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Georgeanne Blackwood; a brother, James Schmitz; and by many caring friends.

Services were held in St. Paul. Interment in Calvary cemetery, Duluth.
