Alice I. Billington

Alice I. Billington, 89, of West Third Street died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in her home.

She was born Jan. 14, 1912, in Duluth to Carl and Selma (Bengtsson) Rosvall. She married Erling Billington in the mid-1930s. She was an electronics technician for Western Electric and for Duluth Avionics, a division of Litton Industries. She was employed at Oneida Realty when she retired in her early 70s.

Alice was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Erling in 1956; a sister, Gladys Patrick in 1995; and a brother, Clarence Rosvall in 1999.

She is survived by sons Alan (Nancy) Billington and Robert Billington, both of Duluth; a daughter, Susanne (Dale) Billington-Nelson of Canyon; grandchildren Sara (Eric) Braun and Erik Billington, and Robert Jr., Chad, Thomas and William Billington; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, in Bethany Lutheran Church. Inurnment in Bethany cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Celia K. Goethel

Celia K. Goethel, 90, formerly of North 52nd Avenue West and Keystone Bluffs died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

She was born in Virginia to Michael and Hannah (Adams) Murphy. She was the youngest of six children. While she was at an early age, her family moved to Duluth where she attended school. She worked for a brief time for Empress Coffee prior to her marriage to Alfred Goethel Oct. 14, 1937, in Duluth. Together, they raised two daughters. She was a homemaker and enjoyed a variety of activities, mostly entertaining in her home. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, St. Margaret's Guild and AARP.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred A. in 1975; sisters Dorothy McNelis, Marie Carlson, Mercedes Murphy; and brothers Emmet and John Murphy.

Surviving are daughters Susanne (William) Malinowski of Duluth and Emilie (John) Blasczyk of Russellville, Ark.; grandchildren Kim (John) Sears of Arkansas, Mike (Kim) Blasczyk of Parkville, Mo., Steve (Pam) Blasczyk of Russellville, Marci (Dan) Golen of Avondale, Ariz., Barb (Jim) Golen of Hermantown, Karen (John) Ball of Duluth and Jill (Dana) Privette of Big Lake, Minn.; great-grandchildren Adam and Sydney Blasczyk, Britany and Katrina Blasczyk, Christy, Mandy, Andrea and Nathan Golen, Jake and Trina Golen, and Emily, Katie, Carley and Olivia Ball.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday with vigil service at 7 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Mass of Christian burial 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Agnes Finn Sollberger

Agnes Finn Sollberger, 85, of Wichita Falls, Texas, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in Wichita Falls.

Agnes was born in Duluth Feb. 12, 1916, and was a retired seamstress.

She is survived by sons William Finn of Wichita Falls and Stephen Finn; a daughter, Marisia Finn of Wichita Falls; a brother, Robert Finn of Anchorage, Alaska; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

No service scheduled at this time. Arrangements by Owens & Brumley Funeral Home, Wichita Falls.

Elfriede "Ellie" Netty Anderson

Elfriede "Ellie" Netty Anderson, 68, of Duluth passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in her residence.

She was born Dec. 31, 1932, in Hyannis, Mass., to Edward and Frieda (Hanni) Landers. Elfriede married Duane Anderson in April 1955 in Hyannis. He passed away March 19, 1990. Elfreide lived in the Duluth area for 45 years, moving here from Hyannis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Duane.

Elfriede is survived by daughters Judy Anderson and Heidi Looker, both of Duluth; sons Jonathan (Sharon) Anderson and Leif Anderson, both of Duluth; a grandson, Travis Anderson of Duluth; granddaughters Heather Anderson of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Jennifer Ives of Duluth; and a great-grandchild, Virginia Ives Podemski of Duluth.

Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., the Rev. Joseph Koranda officiating. Burial in Palmer's Lakeview cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Nancy Lainen-Keussen

Nancy Lainen-Keussen, 50, of Redway, Calif., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Sathya Keussen, of Redway; her parents, Bill and JoAnn Lainen, of McGregor; and sisters Karen (Steve) Jarvi of Cloquet and Peggy Anderson of Duluth.

Memorial service: 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in United Baptist-Christian Church, 830 E. First St., Duluth.

Germaine Mary Reinke

Germaine Mary Reinke, 80, of Second Street, Proctor, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

She was born in Duluth June 4, 1920, to Ernest and Godlieve (Matten) Van Derscheuren. Germaine lived in Hermantown until 1976 and was a Cotton resident until 1992 when she and her husband moved to Proctor. She had worked for Yale and Duluth Laundry Cos. and at the YWCA. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor. She enjoyed and took great pride in the gardens at Railview Apartments.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Albert and Julius; her husband, Alvin Carl, Dec. 27, 1995; and her grandson, Rick Anthony Reinke, Jan. 3, 1992.

Survivors include her daughters, Diane (Calvin) Rudolph of Hermantown, Mary (Gerry) Fox of Payson, Ariz.; sons Ernest (Sandy) Reinke of Gulf Shores, Ala., Mark (Joann) Reinke of Midway Township; grandchildren Glenn Rudolph, Kelly Benson, Kim Welsch, Randy Reinke, Todd Reinke, Tanya Randall, Reggie Fox, Marty Fox, Jamie Savre, Tracy Rudolph; great-grandchildren Chelsey and Jake Benson, Lacey Welsch, Kateland and Leigha Fox, Britta and Alan Savre, Kennedy and Harrison Reinke; a brother, Charles (Lois) Van Derscheuren of Proctor; sisters Irene Wagner, Louise (Bob) Bennett and Liz Robison, all of Hermantown.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday with wake prayers at 6:30 p.m., followed by rosary at 7 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Aline O. Olssen

Aline O. Olssen, 87, of London Road passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.

She was born March 6, 1913, to Ole and Anna Hogenson in Floodwood. She lived most of her life in Duluth and was a graduate of Central High School. She was a member of Fist Lutheran Church, the Norton Lodge and Sons of Norway.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Cora Solberg; and her husband, Egill.

Survivors include a son, Rod (Adele) of Oakdale, Minn.; grandchildren Rick and Doug (Becky), both of St. Paul and Kristin Olssen of Eagan, Minn.; great-grandsons Nathan and Derek.

Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in First Lutheran Church, Pastor Daniel Holm officiating. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Elaine Maud McGillivry

Elaine Maud McGillivry, 80, of Pekin, Ill., formerly of Duluth, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in her residence.

She was born April 21, 1921, in Peoria, Ill., to Carl Jacob and Maud Elizabeth Stauffacher Olin. She married Stacy McGillivry on Feb. 12, 1955, in Minneapolis. He died Aug. 7, 1985, in Pekin.

Elaine had served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in West Duluth and the Harmony Chapter 8 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Minneapolis. She was also a member and past secretary of the Pekin Women's Bowling Association. She attended the Congregational United Church of Christ in Pekin.

Surviving are her son, Michael C. (Lori) McGillivry of Manito, Ill.; grandsons Michael S. and Eric J., both of Manito; and sisters Audrey J. (Gordon) Hulett of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Betsy P. Maki of Eveleth.

Visitation: 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. service Monday in Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, the Rev. Gary L. Johnson officiating. Burial in Glendale Memorial Gardens, Pekin, Ill. Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational United Church of Christ, 2200 Willow St., Pekin, IL 61554.

Catherine "Kay" (McQuade) Robertson

Catherine "Kay" (McQuade) Robertson, 81, of Glenwood Street died peacefully in her home on Monday, May 7, 2001.

She was born Dec. 2, 1919, in St. Paul to John and Ann (Clancy) McQuade. Catherine graduated from Johnson High School in St. Paul and worked at Montgomery Ward until her marriage in 1942. A dedicated homemaker, she faithfully followed her husband through his frequent transfers with Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., making many friends with her kindness and generous spirit. She especially enjoyed their years in Hibbing from 1950 to 1959. She also left friends in Albert Lea, Minn.; Rochester, Minn.; St. Paul; Waseca, Minn.; Austin, Minn.; and Minneapolis. Duluth became her permanent home in 1960 when they moved from Minneapolis.

She was active in St. Michael's Catholic Church Circle and her neighborhood sewing club until recent years of confinement. An avid boater with her husband, Catherine was also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the 242 Yacht Club.

Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Carolyn Dean, who recently passed away from the same disease, acute leukemia. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John (Merle) McQuade.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Charles Robertson; her brother, Donald (Muggs) McQuade of St. Paul; her sons, Richard (Jan) Robertson and Tom (Marilyn) Robertson, both of Duluth; her daughters, Mary Kay (Jim) Van Kempen of Ham Lake, Minn., and Barb Susnik of St. Cloud; grandchildren Amber and Rachel Dean of Duluth, Scott Lathrop of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ryan Lathrop of Duluth; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Catherine spent her life creating a home filled with warmth, love and laughter. She was the light of her husband's life and was able to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary on May 2, 2001, for a joyous final celebration with her family. Catherine was a wonderful partner, mother, friend and neighbor to all who were blessed to know her. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Mary's Hospice for their kindness and support during Catherine's illness.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today with wake prayers at 6:30 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation continues 2:30 until the 3 p.m. funeral Mass Friday in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Interment in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Marguerite Caroline (Audette) Tollefson

Marguerite Caroline (Audette) Tollefson, of Crystal, Minn., formerly of Hermantown, went to her heavenly home Tuesday, May 8, 2001.

She was born Aug. 14, 1933, in Cloquet. Marguerite was known for her delicious cooking, kind generosity, and support and love for all of her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Ellen; a brother, Gordon; a son, Jack; and a grandson, Jonathan.

She will be deeply missed by her beloved husband of 50 years, Philip; children Robert, Ellen (Jesse) Hinrichs, Karen (Mark) Poseley, Kenneth, Kathy and Karolyn (Matthew) Hinrichs; her loving sister, Mrs. Virginia Halvorson of Duluth; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; nieces; nephews; in-laws; and many friends.

Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today in First Memorial Brooklyn Park Chapel, 7835 Brooklyn Blvd., Brooklyn Park, Minn., (763) 560-4694. Visitation continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday in Park Assembly Church, 1615 Texas Ave. S., St. Louis Park, Minn., (952) 545-2326.

Hazel Victoria Tucker

Hazel Victoria Tucker, 86, of Church Street, formerly of Orange Street, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Care Center.

Hazel was born March 21, 1915, in Duluth to Rudolph Melcor and Oline (Thoreson) Nelson. She was a 1934 graduate of Duluth Central High School. Hazel married Ralph C. Tucker in Duluth on June 1, 1950. She was a nurse's aide for 12 years at St. Luke's Hospital prior to her marriage.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters Evelyn Nelson and Clara Weir; and a brother, Adolph Nelson.

She is survived by her son, Gregory R. (Leonida) Tucker of Hibbing; a daughter, Jill (Timothy) Johnson of Stanford, Ky., grandchildren Jennifer Tucker of the Philippines, and Timothy, Tracy and Trent Johnson, all of Stanford; a brother, Harry O. Nelson of Seattle; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 11-11:30 a.m. Friday with family greeting friends at 11:30 a.m. until the noon service in Crawford Funeral Service, Chaplain Patrick Carey officiating. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park cemetery, Hermantown. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Services entrusted to Crawford Funeral Service, 131 E. Second St., Duluth.

Marie (Mary Agnes) Tyo

Marie (Mary Agnes) Tyo, 91, of West Duluth died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice, Duluth.

She was born in Chisholm on June 3, 1909, to Louis and May (Enright) McKenna. She was a homemaker and a member of St. James Catholic Church and its St. Margaret's Guild. Marie had lived in West Duluth for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, Francis Tyo; brothers Lou, Jim and Howard McKenna; and her daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and Herbert L. Davis Jr.

She is survived by sons Robert F. Tyo of Superior and John "Jack" (Patricia) Tyo of Island Lake; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Friday in Foley Chapel. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.
