Marianna A. Burns

Marianna A. Burns, 79, of Seventh Street in Proctor and formerly of Fiskett Road, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor in Duluth.

She was born Oct. 1, 1921, in Duluth to Joseph and Mary (Desalvo) Donfris. Marianna married Robert Burns in Duluth on March 3, 1942. He passed away Feb. 5, 1994. She worked as a cook in numerous Duluth-area restaurants and owned the Red Carpet Restaurant in the late 1960s.

Marianna was open, giving, nurturing and generous to everyone. She was a member of Women of the Moose of Proctor. Marianna loved playing bingo and crocheting afghans for all of her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband of 52 years, Robert.

Marianna is survived by her daughters, Roberta "Bobby" (Roy) Kruger of Proctor, Susan (Edwin) Black of Middleboro, Mass., Elizabeth "Bette" (Rich) Burns-Koivisto of Duluth and Anita Burns of Naperville, Ill.; sons Robert (Janet) Burns of Duluth and Neal (Judy) Burns of Nine Mile Falls, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; sisters Louise "Lulu" Johnson and Lucille "Dolly" (Greg) Meier, both of Duluth; and a brother, James (Corrine) Donfris of Duluth.

Mass of Christian burial: 10:30 a.m. today in St. John's Catholic Church, the Rev. Jerry Weiss officiating. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.

Katherine Mary Adkins

Katherine Mary Adkins, 76, of Duluth, passed away Friday, May 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.

She was born July 8, 1924, to James Sr. and Catherine (O'Connell) Black in Superior. She married Lowell Adkins in August 1943. She was a former member of Gary/New Duluth Community Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; her parents; and her brother, James Black Jr.

She is survived by her children, James (Barbara) Adkins of Duluth, Kathleen (Gene) Van Ert of Superior, and Robert Adkins of Duluth; grandchildren Michael (Tina) Van Ert of Superior, Debbie Adkins of Cloquet, Michele Adkins of Duluth; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 9 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Foley Chapel, 5404 Ramsey St., Duluth. Burial in Calvary cemetery, Superior.

Kenneth R. Archambeau

Kenneth R. Archambeau, 60, of Hermantown died Sunday, May 6, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, with his whole family at his side.

He was born Sept. 10, 1940, in Duluth to Raymond and Ruth (Johnson) Archambeau, and was a lifelong Hermantown resident. He was an Army veteran.

He married Audrey Fransk on May 6, 1965, in Hermantown. He had worked for Engwall's Florist & Greenhouse and the U.S. Steel Plant Duluth Works. He was a Hermantown school district bus driver for seven years and for the past 10 years did maintenance work for the Hermantown schools, retiring in February 2001, because of his illness.

He loved hunting and fishing. He was an avid racing fan and loved playing on his four-wheeler. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who passed on his sense of humor and love of the outdoors to his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Audrey; daughters Brenda (Kim) Schrader of West Fargo, N.D., and Sandy (Jay Johnson) Archambeau of Duluth; sons Mark Rohde of Fargo, N.D., Randy (Melody Nyman) Archambeau of Saginaw and Raymond (Lori Rachuy) of Meadowlands; brothers Gene (Bertha) and LeRoy Archambeau, both of Hermantown; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and continues noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Salem Lutheran Church, Hermantown. Burial in Hermantown cemetery.

Ilde M. Harder

100 descendants

Ilde M. Harder, 96, lifelong Duluth resident, went to join her loved ones on Saturday, May 5, 2001, from the Carlton Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 14, 1905, in Lake Naquabay, Wis., to Clarence and Myrtle (McNabow) LeMasurier. Ilde married Theodore R. Harder on Nov. 8, 1926, in Duluth. She had worked as a waitress at the Flame Restaurant, Hotel Duluth, Lincoln Hotel and the Hamilton Hotel.

Ilde was preceded in death by her mother in 1966; her father in 1982; her husband, Theodore, in 1974; a grandson, Jeremy Harder; a granddaughter, Jana Harder; great-grandsons Thomas Klassen and Bobbie Fosness; a great-great-grandson, Aubin Klassen; and a son-in-law, Kenneth Fosness.

She is survived by her daughters, Theodora Fosness and Greta (John) Klassen, both of Alborn; a son, Clarence (Barbara) Harder of Sparta, Tenn.; 22 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; and two grandnieces.

Ilde's family expresses their sincere appreciation to the staff of Carlton Nursing Home for the excellent care of their loved one.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Faith Lutheran Church in Culver. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Betty L. Benson

Betty L. Benson, 73, of Maple Grove Road died Sunday, May 6, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

She was born Dec. 22, 1927, to John and Hazel (Odegaard) McDonell in Duluth. Betty married Donald Jessick in 1950. She worked in the Bradley Building as an elevator operator, at Minnesota Mining, was a quality control inspector for Duluth Avionics and had worked for St. Louis County in the Cook Home. She worked for 42 years, retiring in 1986.

Betty was a charter member of Peace in Christ Lutheran Church in Hermantown and the AARP.

She was preceded in death by Donald Jessick in 1974; her husband, John in 1993; and by her brother, Allen McDonell.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Debbie Jorgenson of Gary-New Duluth; grandsons Jason (Christinia) Lindgren and Clayton Lindgren; great-granddaughters Brittany, Arial and Nichole Lindgren; sisters-in-law Blanche Benson, Alice Hansen, Nancy Benson and Mabel Benson, all of Duluth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Peace in Christ Lutheran Church, Hermantown. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Memorials may be directed to Peace in Christ Lutheran Church.

David L. Torma

David L. Torma, 55, of Stillwater, Minn., beloved child of God, died Friday, May 4, 2001.

He was born April 10, 1946, in Duluth, and had worked at the 3M Co. for 33 years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther (Teppo) Torma, and a sister, Susan (Torma) Lavoy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kris; a son, Ryan (Kari Ann); a daughter, Jenell; his father, Leo Torma; and many loving family and friends.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. service Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church, 115 N. Fourth St., Stillwater. Memorials preferred. Arrangements by Bradshaw Funeral and Cremation Services, Stillwater, (651) 439-5511.

Jack Wallace Moon

Jack Wallace Moon, 72, of London Road died Friday, May 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 9, 1928, in Duluth to Harry and Daisy Wallace Moon. He was a graduate of Denfeld High School, the University of Minnesota School of Business Administration, the U of M ROTC and U of M Law School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He had practiced law in Duluth for many years.

He was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist, the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Kiwanis Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by a special friend, Lyndy Ritter of Duluth and her children, Bill Ritter of Duluth, Jean (Gary) Vreeland of Coon Rapids and Terry (Tuck) Ritter of Edina, Minn., and her five grandchildren.

No services will be held at Jack's request. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Arthur P. Lindgard

Arthur P. Lindgard, 87, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday, May 4, 2001, in his home of natural causes.

He was born June 16, 1913, in Proctor, the son of Joseph and Olga Larson Lindgard. He married Dorothy M. Studley on March 25, 1939, in Proctor.

Mr. Lindgard had worked as an inspector at John Deere for 21 years, retiring in 1976.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Norbert and Orville.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert of Waterloo; three grandchildren; and a brother, Reidar of Bangor, Calif.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Waterloo. Inurnment in Oneota cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family. Arrangements by Parrott & Wood Family Funeral Care, Waterloo.

Lorraine Louise Ward

Lorraine Louise Ward, 77, of Park Place died Saturday, May 5, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home.

She was born Sept. 19, 1923 to Edward and Emma Hoppa in Ely. During World War II, she had worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Detroit. She then worked for the Yellowstone Bank in Laurel, Mont., and then transferred to the Yellowstone Bank in Billings, Mont. She moved to Duluth in 1953 and worked for the bank in Proctor. She retired as a vice president in 1985, after many years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Virginia Brohaugh, Evelyn Ward and Mary Helen Hoppa.

She is survived by her husband, Lester; a son, Ronald (Judy) Ward of Flower Mound, Texas; a daughter, Toni Paulson of Proctor; a sister, Eileen Elfving of Silver Bay; a brother, Edward Hoppa of Eveleth; and five grandchildren.

No services at Lorraine's request. Inurnment in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Elsie A. Haij

Elsie A. Haij, 85, formerly of Duluth died Thursday, May 3, 2001, in Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis; and brothers Grant and Harlan Carlson.

Elsie is survived by her sister, Betty Carlson of Duluth; a brother, William Carlson of Lakewood, Wash.; stepson Clayton Haij of Coon Rapids, Minn.; 10 nieces and nephews; many grandnieces and grandnephews; and many special friends.

Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hoplin Funeral Chapel, Glenwood, Minn.

Dorothy M. Soder

Dorothy M. Soder, 77, of West Eighth Street died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

She was born April 29, 1924, to Edmund and Martha Gimpel in Duluth. She met Clarence Soder in 1942, and they were married on April 22, 1946, in Duluth. During World War II, Dorothy worked at the steel plant in Morgan Park.

Dorothy was active in the Harrison Club, where she was the treasurer of the Birthday Club, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 71 and Post Home.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence; a daughter, Sharon Soder of Duluth; sons Raymond and Michael, both of Duluth; a sister, Martha Ann Chambers of Washington, N.C.; a brother, Edmund Gimpel Jr. of Union City, Calif; grandchildren Breanne, Andrew, Nicholas and Jack; a great-grandson, Joseph; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Soder of Duluth; a brother-in-law, E. Raymond Soder of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a second mother to Gerri Napoli of Proctor.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.
