Anna Lee Meyer

Anna Lee Meyer, 20, of Long Beach, Calif., died Saturday, May 12, 2001, as the result of an automobile accident.

She was born Oct. 3, 1980, in Rochester, Minn., to Randall and Renee Meyer. Her family moved to Montreal, Wis., from Rochester in 1982. They moved to La Crosse, Wis., in 1992 and in 1994 moved to Duluth. Anna graduated from Duluth East High School in 1998. She and her twin sister, Emily, had just recently moved to Long Beach.

Anna was preceded in death by her grandfathers.

She is survived by her parents; her twin sister, Emily Meyer of Long Beach and sister, Paige Meyer, of Bozeman, Mont.; her maternal grandmother, Evelyn Nereson of Rochester; and her paternal grandmother, Shirley Meyer of Austin, Minn.

Memorial service: 3 p.m. Friday in First Unitarian Church, 1802 E. First St., Duluth, the Rev. Karen Johnson Gustafson officiating. No visitation or reviewal. Arrangements by Ranfranz Funeral Home, Rochester.

James David Sunnarborg

James David Sunnarborg, 58, of Columbia Heights, Minn., died Dec. 28, 2000, in his home.

Jim was born at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth on March 29, 1942. His family moved to Columbia Heights in 1955. He spent three years in the Army serving overseas in Germany. When he finished his tour of duty he returned home to Columbia Heights and began his job at Dispatch Ovens as a welder. He worked there until his retirement in 1998 when the company moved out of the area. He married Karen Peterson in 1972 and they had one daughter, Christine, born in 1973.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Eino Theodore Sunnarborg and Aune Mary (Mannisto) Sunnarborg, and a brother, Jack Theodore Sunnarborg.

He is survived by his daughter, Christine of North Branch, Minn.; his brother, Robert Paul (Connie) Sunnarborg of St. Joseph, Mich.; two nieces; two nephews; two grandnephews; and many cousins and friends.

Interment: 1 p.m. Friday followed by a memorial service at Forest Hills cemetery in Duluth. All friends and family are invited.

Marvin G. Mickelson

Marvin G. Mickelson, 58, of Fawn Trail, Duluth, died Friday, May 11, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1942, in Aitkin Hospital and was raised in Lawler, Minn.

At the time of his illness from lung cancer, Marvin took a leave of absence from Northeast Regional Correction Center, where he had worked for 13 years. Before working at NERCC, Marvin had worked for the Carlton County and Aitkin County Extension offices. Along with his wife, Marlene, he had owned and operated a large dairy farm in Wright, Minn. He had also owned and operated Mr. Marvin's Hair Fashion's in Cloquet. He received his hairdresser's license from the Duluth Beauty School and was the manager of the Duluth Glass Block Beauty Salon before opening his own shop.

Marvin was not afraid to try different things. He built his own home, which his family moved into in the fall of 1999. After moving in, both he and his wife were diagnosed with cancer, Marlene in January and Marvin in April of 2000. Marvin fought a courageous battle but lost. Marlene is doing fine. Besides building their retirement home, he enjoyed fishing every chance he got, especially on his boat, the Bobber II, on Lake Superior.

Marvin was a member and deacon of Hermantown Community Church. He was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Maila Mickelson; brothers Eugene and Roger; and his half-brother, Raymond Lane.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Marlene; a son, Ryan, at home; sisters-in-law, Joanne Mickelson of Lawler and Judie (Scott) Austin of Duluth; a brother-in-law, John (Bernie) Giernot of Duluth; his mother and father-in-law, Erma and Bruno Giernot of Duluth; nieces and nephews, Eric (Stacey) Mickelson of Bethel, Minn., Janice (Allen) Ammala of McGregor, Minn., and Laura and Eric Austin of Duluth; a special niece, Lonnie (Brad) Watts of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a grandnephew, Zachary Mickelson of Bethel; an uncle, George (Lois) Mickelson of Cloquet; his aunts, Gladys Winquist of Cloquet and Audrey Johnson of Nopeming; and his Hermantown church family that have been so supportive.

Visitation: 5 until the 6:30 p.m. worship and funeral service Wednesday in Hermantown Community Church, 4880 Maple Grove Rd., Hermantown, the Rev. Thor Sorenson officiating. Downs Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Betty Lou (Madsen) Moliter

Betty Lou (Madsen) Moliter, 73, longtime resident of Grand Avenue died Sunday, May 13, 2001, in her residence.

Betty was born in Duluth on May 20, 1927, to Emery and Thelma (Smith) Madsen and had been a lifelong resident of the city. She was a graduate of Denfeld High School and had been a homemaker. Betty and her husband, Kenneth, had celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on May 7 of this year.

Betty loved to be around her family and friends and always enjoyed having people stopping by to visit. She collected teddy bears, loved to crochet, knit and play cards and bingo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Kathleen.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth W.; daughters Joan (Leonard) Steltz and Jody Moliter of Duluth; stepbrothers Wilfred (Sally) Jenks Jr. and Wayne (Donna) Jenks; stepsisters Louise (Robert) VanNess, Lorraine (Robert) Johnson and Barbara Angeline, all of Michigan; grandchildren Tammy Steltz and Chad (Tara) Steltz; great-grandchildren Amanda, Caylee and Marissa; and her cousins, Nancy (Mike) Sury and Tom (Belita) Madsen, both of Texas, and Terry (Romona) Stenberg of White Bear Lake, Minn.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Foley Chapel. Interment in Sunrise Memorial cemetery. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St., Duluth, 624-4838.

Kalvin R. "Kal" Peterson Sr.

Kalvin R. "Kal" Peterson Sr., 43, of 65th Avenue West died unexpectedly Saturday, May 12, 2001, at his home.

He was born Aug. 10, 1957, in Duluth to Raymond R. and Shirley J. (Rabold) Peterson. Kal was a lifelong Duluth resident and was a 1975 graduate of Central High School. He worked as a millwright at Georgia Pacific Corp., formerly Superwood Corp., and was founder and president of Denfeld Lube Center, which is family-owned and operated. He had previously owned and operated Peterson Lawn Service, which became Perfect Lawns.

He was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church of Lakewood. Kal married Pattie Lyn Monson on Oct. 28, 1995, in Elim Lutheran Church, Duluth. He truly enjoyed family gatherings and playing with his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed camping, his dog, Yella, and had a passion for maintaining and operating his dump truck.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley in 1980; his grandparents, Gertrude Saice and Pat and Ed Rabold; and his dog, Tanner.

Survivors include his wife, Pattie; a daughter, Patti M. Peterson of Duluth; sons Kalvin Jr., Dean and Dane, all of Duluth; his father, Raymond R. of Duluth; brothers Ronald (Paula) of Proctor and Greg, Patrick (Laura) and Terry, all of Duluth; a sister, Tracy (Rick) Ledin of Duluth; grandchildren Tylor and Derek Gill and James and Ashlynn Carl; his father and mother-in-law, Rudy and Marilyn Monson of Duluth; his sister and brother-in-law, Bobbie (Mark) Macor of Duluth and his brother and sister-in-law, Rudy Jr. (Mary) Monson of Duluth; several nieces and nephews; two grandnephews; and a grandniece.

Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel and continues 11 a.m. until the noon service Wednesday in New Hope Lutheran Church, Lakewood Township, Pastor Jim K. Hagen officiating. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., 624-5745.

Robert H. O'Rourke

Robert H. O'Rourke, 86, of Glendale Street died in the arms of his family on Saturday, May 12, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 6, 1914, in Duluth to Michael and Henrietta (Watts) O'Rourke. Bob graduated from Central High School in 1932 and was a lifelong resident of Duluth except for the time he served in the Navy during World War II. He worked for the Duluth Fire Department for 39 years, retiring as the first assistant chief. While working for the fire department, he also worked for Arrowhead Electric as an estimator and designer.

Bob was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, trustee and elder. He was a member of many civic, fraternal and charitable organizations throughout his life. His memberships included Lakeside Masonic Lodge 281, where he was a past master and served as its treasurer. He was a member of the Duluth Valley of the Scottish Rite receiving the title of 32nd Degree KCCH. Bob served on the stage crew and the Temple Association for many years. He was also a member of Aad Temple Shrine and its director's staff. Bob was a life fellow of Kiwanis, Gitche-Gumee Chapter, serving as secretary-treasurer and volunteered in their Reading is Fundamental program, Special Olympics and serving in the soup kitchen at the Damiano Center.

He enjoyed music and was proficient in restoring and repairing organs, especially rebuilding pipe organs. Bob was a private pilot and had a lifelong affection with Lake Superior. He was dedicated to his family and active in Boys Scouts, Indian Guides and was a junior and senior high school youth advisor at Lakeside Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen M. O'Rourke of Arlington, Va.

Bob is survived by his sons James (Candace) O'Rourke of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., and Michael (Kathy) O'Rourke of Duluth; a daughter, Peggy (Sanford) Baddin of Tarzana, Calif.; grandchildren Daniel O'Rourke, Laura Hamernick, Sara Baddin, Ryan Baddin, Kevin O'Rourke, Ryan O'Rourke and David O'Rourke; great-grandchildren Matthew, Molly and Jack O'Rourke; sisters Grace Graves of Wakefield, Mich., and Alice D'Arcey of Felton, Calif.; and lifelong friend, Lorraine Therrien of Duluth.

Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Tuesday with Masonic rites in Johnson Mortuary, 514 E. Third St. Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Scottish Rite Bodies Masonic Temple, 4 W. Second St., Duluth. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bob's name to the Scottish Rite Language Disorder Clinic or any of the Kiwanis Club, Gitche-Gummee Chapter projects.

Hazel A. Hanson

Hazel A. Hanson, 89, of East Skyline Parkway died Sunday, May 13, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home.

Hazel was born in Duluth and had been a lifelong resident. She was formerly employed as a teacher, having taught many years at Lincoln Junior High School.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Kepps Chapter and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a life member of the Duluth Area Retired Educators, Minnesota Education Association, and National Education Association. She was past president of the Duluth Teachers Retirement Fund Association, Duluth Teachers Association, NE District Minnesota Education Association, Classroom Teachers Association of NEMEA, and secretary of WDSE-TV. She was a member of Methodist Union/Duluth, St. Louis County Historical Society, Chisholm Museum, a trustee of NE Senior Citizen Coalition, a member of Nursing Home Committee, a secretary of Norsemans League and member of the Alumni Association of the College of St. Scholastica.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Magnus and Alfrida Hanson and a sister, Mildred Peterson.

She is survived by a sister, Evelyn Stahl of Duluth; a nephew, John (Roxanne) Stahl of Duluth; grandnieces Dawn Stahl of Whitefish, Mont., and Kimberly Stahl of Woodbury, Minn.; and great-grandnieces Mary Whitney Stahl and Kira Stahl, both of Woodbury.

No services. Memorials to Wesley United Methodist Church, 2331 W. Third St. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.

Ruth Josephine (Bodell) Pogue

Ruth Josephine (Bodell) Pogue, 79, of Blaine, Minn., died Wednesday, April 4, 2001.

She was a cosmetologist and loved her dog and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hattie and Stephen Bodell of Duluth; and a son, Rodger.

Survivors include her husband, Ray; children Ronald, Judy and Richard; grandson, Redding Pogue; great-granddaughter, Aubrey; sisters Frances Nelson, Helen Doppler, Sister Stephen Bodell, Jean Jones, Georgeann Nelson and Mitzie Murphy; brothers Art Bodell, Bob Bodell, Joe Bodell, Steve Bodell, Ray Bodell and Don Bodell.

Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Crawford Funeral Home, Duluth, with interment immediately following in Park Hill cemetery.

Lorraine Rheaume

Lorraine Rheaume, 77, of Kenwood Avenue died Saturday, May 12, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Susan Carter, and brothers and sisters.

Surviving are sons John A. of Grapton, Wisc., and Robert J. of Duluth; daughters Mary E. (Steve) Albertson of Waukegan, Ill., and Peggy A. LaBlanc of Duluth; sisters Mary Jackson of Duluth and Betty Smith of Iowa; brothers Bob Carter of Duluth, Leonard L. Carter of Apache Junction, Ariz., Rev. William Carter of Sioux City, Iowa and Richard Carter of Minneapolis; and six grandchildren.

Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday in Forest Hill cemetery Chapel. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Cecilia F. Holt

Cecilia F. Holt, 95, of Lino Lakes, Minn., passed away Sunday, March 25, 2001, in her home.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., March 12, 1906, to Montel and Bridget Henley Shinkle. Cecilia graduated from St. Clare's High School in 1925. She moved to Duluth in 1925 and graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing in 1928. Cecilia worked in St. Mary's Hospital from 1928-1936. She then devoted the rest of her life to her family. She moved to Lino Lakes in 1996 and lived independently until her time of death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis George Holt in 1973; and a sister, Evelyn Bowen in 1994.

She is survived by a daughter, June C. Holt of Lino Lakes; grandchildren David (Mary) Drew of Manistee, Mich., Kathryn (Randall) Duffield of Shoreview, Minn., Michael (Taeko) Racckowski of East Bethel, Minn., and Vicki (Steven) Ramsey of Shakopee, Minn.; great-grandchildren; David and Michael Drew, Thomas and Emily Duffield and Michelle Racckowski; and a nephew, Dennis Bowen.

Private family visitation: 4-8 p.m. today with 7 p.m. prayer service in Crawford Chapel. Private family services held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Crawford Chapel. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Memorials may be made to Northwoods Children Home. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service.
