James W. "Jim" Hallamek

James W. "Jim" Hallamek, 57, of Larson Road died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, because of a motorcycle accident.

He was born July 19, 1943, to Ernest and Clara (Piekarski) Hallamek in Inver Grove Heights, Minn. Jim graduated from South St. Paul High School in 1961. He married Lisa Kramer on May 2, 1986. Jim worked in the insurance industry for more than 30 years and was working as a public insurance adjuster for Hetland-Garnst Associates.

He loved anything fast, including his Thunder Cat 1000 and his Harley. Jim enjoyed his home on Fish Lake, the outdoors, loved his friends with his whole heart and welcomed anyone to stop by his home anytime.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joey, and his parents.

Jim is survived by his wife of 15 years, Lisa; sons James (Olga) of Austin, Texas, Jerry of Minneapolis and Jason "Jake" Shannon of Faribault; grandsons Tony and James Sagan Hallamek; a brother, Jack (Honey) of Inver Grove Heights; a sister, Jean Holloway of Coates; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Saturday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Memorials may be sent to the Contented Critters in Hoyt Lakes. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.

Dale Eugene Broich

Dale Eugene Broich, 77, of Wyoming Township, Minn., passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2001.

He was born Feb. 27, 1924, in Big Stone City, S.D. He married his wife, Helen, on June 19, 1993. He was a member of the VFW Post 4210, American Legion Post 295, AmVets and Metro Marines.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; sons Dan (Sharon) Broich and Mike (Sheila) Dickey; daughters Darlene (George) Deegan, Diane Kingsbury, Dawn "Suzy" Schlavin, Michelle (Ron) Soule and Kathleen (George) Brelje; brothers Hap, Kenneth (Martha) and Dick (Anna) Broich; a sister Mae (George) Weinans; grandchildren Audra (Mitch) Wettschreck, Jason (Melissa) Deegan, Chad Deegan, Patricia Schlavin, Todd Schlavin, Troy (Mai) Schlavin, Justin and Amanda Soule, Jason and Tiana Cowley, Kaela and Lainey Dickey, Brittany, Nicole and Jess Soule, Jared and Hayley Brelje, Joshua, Amanda and Dillon Wettschreck and Keono and Taylor Schlavin; special friends, Sonny and Kathy Peterson and Marylu Freeman; and many nieces, nephews and other special friends.

Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service Saturday in Mattson Funeral Chapel, 343 N. Shore Dr., Forest Lake, MN 55025, the Rev. Mike Haseltine officiating. Burial in Fort Snelling National cemetery.

Michael Allen Stowman

Michael Allen Stowman was born and died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

He is survived by his parents, Michael Stowman and Jennifer Allen of Grand Rapids, Mich.; his grandparents Jean Allen of Bloomington, Minn., James (Denise) Allen of Malibu, Calif.; and David and Judy Stowman of Detroit Lakes, Minn.

A private family service will be held Sunday in St. Mary's Chapel in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Harry Edward Egan Jr.

Harry Edward Egan Jr., 74, of Acacia Avenue, Proctor died Sunday, March 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born in Superior and had resided in Duluth and Proctor all his life. Harry was employed as a pipefitter with U.S. Steel, Duluth Works from 1944 to 1975, and in building maintenance with Jeno's Inc. from 1975 to 1984. He retired in building maintenance from the Radisson Hotel in 1986. He attended St. James Catholic Church and was a member of the West Duluth American Legion, Steelworkers Local 1028, and was a former member of the West Duluth Moose. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Harry was an avid bowler and bowled in the Majors for many years. Most recently he bowled in the Senior's.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry E. Sr. and Grace Egan; a brother, James; and his brother-in-law, Dick Hedeen.

He is survived by his wife, DuRaine; daughters Claire (Robert) Smith of Omaha, Neb., Debra (Michael) Hennessy of Duluth, Monica (Dennis) Stokke of Hermantown and Hilary (Mark Norby) Alvino of Chaska, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Stephanie (Marty) Oberg of Saginaw; a stepson, Steven Makitalo of Proctor; a sister, Mary Hedeen of Duluth; grandchildren Andrew Harry Smith, Glynnis (George Dietrick) Hennessy, Christopher Hennessy, Mollie (Scott) Lucia, Shaine (Jennifer) Stokke, Katharine Alvino and Maureen Alvino; step-grandchildren Amanda and Carli Oberg, and Eric, Cody and Jessica Makitalo; great-grandchildren Sierra and Abigail Hennessy, and Cole Stokke; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with a 5:30 p.m. Vigil service in Bell Brothers Chapel. Mass of Christian burial 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church. Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave W.

Michael H. Kay

Michael H. Kay, 50, of Woodcrest Drive died Sunday, March 4, 2001, from injuries suffered from a snowmobile accident near Pequaywan Lake.

He was a lifelong Duluth resident. Mike graduated from University of Minnesota Duluth in 1974 and worked in Norwest Bank for 25 years and became vice president of commercial loans. In 1993, Mike became a financial consultant for Merrill Lynch. He was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary and had once served for six years in the Air National Guard. He had been an officer with the Duluth JC's, treasurer for The Builders Exchange, and treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Bethel. He had also been active in Duck's Unlimited.

Mike enjoyed downhill skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fly fishing, but most importantly spending time with his three girls.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie L. Lepak; his grandfather, Michael J. Lepak; and a nephew, Davey Lowney.

Mike is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Rebecca of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Michelle of Duluth; his father, James L. (Doris) Kay of Avon Park, Fla.; a brother, Richard A. (Cory) of Duluth; sisters Cheryl A. (Rick) Lowney and Sharon L. (John) Mack, both of Duluth; his grandmother, Hazel B. Lepak, also of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Mass of Christian burial 1 p.m. Wednesday in Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, 2801 E. Fourth St. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Family prefers memorials. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 924 E. Fourth St.

Madelyn E. Pearson

Madelyn E. Pearson, 84, of London Road died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in her home with family at her side.

She was born in Duluth on July 29, 1916, to Frank and Bernadette Palmstein and has been a lifelong Duluth resident. She was employed as a postal worker for the U.S. Postal Service.

Madelyn was preceded in death by her first husband, Gordon R. Hanson in 1968; her second husband, Arthur Pearson in 1981; a sister, Eileen Sorenson; and a brother, Frank Palmstein.

She is survived by her sister, Dorothy J. "D.J." Turnbull of Duluth; daughters Madelyn Jean (Carl) Jensen of Saginaw, Peggy (Richard) Stetler of Woodinville, Wash., Mary (Jacques) Regat of Anchorage, Alaska; Kathryn (Bob) Segress of Bothel, Wash., and Susie (Keith) Carter of Duluth; sons Gordon C. (Jane) Hanson of Sterling Heights, Mich., John (Tina) Hanson of Grand Marais and Mike (Lani Band) Hanson of Seattle; 30 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Thursday in Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St. Burial in Calvary cemetery.

Lucian J. Marsh Jr.

Lucian J. Marsh Jr., 89, of the Franciscan Health Center, Duluth, formerly of the Lincoln Park area, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001.

He was active in the Democrat party and also helped start food co-ops in the West Bank area of Minneapolis.

Lucian was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Lucian Sr. and Clarissa Marsh; and his third wife, Freda.

He is survived by his second wife, Margie Blegen; a son, Robin (Linda); a daughter, Lee Emanoff (Denis Sauve); and grandchildren Adam Emanoff, and Elizabeth, John-Paul and Colleen Marsh.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. March 29 in Franciscan Health Center, 3910 Minnesota Ave., Duluth.

Paul Baxter Schmittou

Paul Baxter Schmittou, 54, of Colorado Street died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in his home after a courageous battle with liver cancer.

He was born June 23, 1946, in Baltimore, Md. Paul was an Air Force veteran stationed at the Duluth Air Base from 1964 to 1968. He was employed first with General Motors in Detroit and then with USG Interiors in Cloquet.

Paul will be greatly missed by his wife of 33 years, Irene; sons, Todd (Kristen) of New Hope, Minn., Scott (Ginny) of Saginaw and Jeff of Duluth; daughters, Pam (Tom) Schmittou of Lexington, Ky., and Nicole Schmittou of Duluth; grandsons Zachary and Devin; and a granddaughter, Stephanie.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Dougherty Funeral Home and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Dougherty Funeral Home.

Raymond Johnson

Raymond Johnson, 74, of Duluth passed away Sunday, March 4, 2001, in his residence.

He was born Dec. 7, 1926, in Duluth to Alfred and Jennie (Anderson) Johnson. Raymond lived his whole life in the Duluth area. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Raymond married Elizabeth Paulus Witherly Aug. 31, 1968. He was employed at Duluth Ready Mix for 36 years as a truck driver, retiring in 1989. Raymond was a collector of many things.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Elizabeth; his children, Kristine (David) Grant of Dekalb, Ill., Richard (Coleen) Witherly, Patricia Alvar and Jennifer (Erick) Frondon, all of Duluth; brothers Gunnar of Duluth, Richard (Dorothy) of Rockford, Ill., and George of Duluth; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon memorial service Tuesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., Duluth. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date in Sunrise Memorial Park cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Aimee U. McIntyre

Aimee U. McIntyre, 85, of Duluth, formerly of the Henderson area, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home, Duluth.

She was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Henderson Township, Sibley County, to Nelson and Elizabeth (Mohrenweiser) Carpenter. She graduated from Henderson High School in 1933 and received a bachelor's degree from Mankato Teachers College in 1952 and received a master's degree in education from the University of Minnesota in 1959. She taught in various rural school districts and taught elementary school in St. Paul for 25 years.

Aimee is survived by her daughter, Victoria Hendricksen of Duluth; granddaughters Elizabeth and Sarah Day; and sisters Olive Maki and Clarice Langworthy, both of Henderson, Minn.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in Kolden Funeral Home, Henderson. The Rev. R. Louis Gerad of the Church of the Holy Communion officiating. Interment in Brown cemetery, Henderson.

Maurice "Maurie" Weber

Maurice "Maurie" Weber, 84, of Upham Road died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 30, 1916, to William and Lydia Weber in Paynesville, Minn. Maurie married June Peterson on Dec. 25, 1942. He was employed as a funeral director for many years and went on to counsel and later direct the chemical dependence program at Miller-Dwan Hospital, retiring in 1983. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and Lester Park Men's Golf League. He also volunteered at Miller-Dwan Hospital.

Maurie was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, June; daughters Sheryl Melquist of Ponca City, Okla., and Susan (Walt) Gann of Boise, Idaho; sons William (Carla) of Fargo, N.D., and James (Rosanne) of Wausau, Wis.; and grandchildren Pamela Melquist, Josie Weber, Amelia Weber, Berit Gann, Maurie Weber, Carl Weber and Sydney Gann.

Service: 10 a.m. Thursday in First Lutheran Church. Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church, 1100 E. Superior St., Duluth, MN 55802. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Anne M. Johnson

Anne M. Johnson, 87, formerly of 60th Avenue West and Ramsey Manor, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in her daughter's home in Dexter, Mich.

Anne was born in Duluth and lived here most of her life. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the Women's Circle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Rosalie Kujawa; a son, Ronald Johnson; and brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara A. McClure of Dexter; sisters Mary Ellison of Duluth and Martha Silletto of Las Vegas; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday with 5:30 p.m. wake prayers in Bell Brothers Chapel. Mass of Christian burial 1 p.m. Wednesday in St. James Catholic Church. Burial in Polish Catholic cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th. Ave. W.
