Theresa C. St. Marie

Theresa C. St. Marie, 97, of Gateway Tower, Superior Street, and formerly of Martin Road, passed away May 1, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.

She was born Sept. 20, 1903, in Duluth to Joseph and Marcella (Kupczynski) Katzmarek. Theresa married Albert Roy St. Marie on April 29, 1924, in Duluth. He passed away in 1969. She had lived in the Duluth area her entire life. Theresa worked at Hartman Shoe Co., Bullard Knitting Mill and in housekeeping at St. Mary's Hospital, retiring in 1968 after working there for 10 years.

She was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and its Rosary Society and the Cloquet Eagles Auxiliary, where she was a 40-year charter member.

Theresa was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Harriet Bruley; grandchildren Linda Kaiser, Stephen Korby and Glenn St. Marie; sisters Veronica Osburn and Lucille Ritter; a brother, Eugene Katzmarek; and a son-in-law, LeRoy Korby.

She is survived by her children, Eugene (Adeline) St. Marie, Kenneth (Lorraine) St. Marie and Carolyn St. Marie Korby, all of Duluth; 23 grandchildren; and many great and great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday with 7 p.m. vigil service and 10:30 a.m. service Friday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., Duluth, the Rev. Paul Larson officiating. Burial in the Polish Catholic cemetery, Duluth.

Joseph Alfred "Joe" Saburn

Joseph Alfred "Joe" Saburn, 85, of Minnesota Avenue passed away Tuesday, May, 1, 2001, in Franciscan Health Care Center, Duluth.

He was born May 12, 1915, in Barnum to Fred and Dora (Kolstad) Saburn. During his childhood he attended school in Duluth and the surrounding area.

His first job was at the age of three, shoveling sawdust in a boxcar for three cents a day at the sawmill that bordered his family's property in Nickerson, Minn. At the age of eight, he worked out West at various ranches, running cattle, breaking in broncos and mending fences. He worked as a cowboy throughout his young adult years, until his marriage to Hazel Halmet of Palo on June, 19, 1937. Later, Joe served as a Navy Sea Bee in World War II in the South Pacific. After the war, Joe became a welder and iron worker in Minnesota, Upper Michigan and Illinois. In 1962, he moved to Phoenix and opened his own small engine repair shop. He retired from there in 1978 and moved to Duluth in 1990, and had lived in the area since moving back.

He sponsored stock car racing in Phoenix. Joe and his wife were avid rock hounds. He designed custom jewelry made of agates, turquoise and silver. He and his wife loved traveling and Joe's family meant everything to him.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel in 1988; a daughter, Barbara Ash in 1998; and a brother and two sisters.

He is survived by his fiancee, Myrtle Garlie of Duluth; his daughter, Joanne Christian of Twig; a son, Jim Saburn of Gardnerville, Nev., and 38 members of his immediate family.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Crawford Funeral Service, 131 E. Second St., Duluth, the Rev. Patrick Carey officiating. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown, with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service.

Dr. Eleanor Berman

Dr. Eleanor Berman, 79, of Chicago, formerly of Duluth died Monday, April 30, 2001, in her home.

She was born Oct. 5, 1921, to Morris and Lena Berman in Duluth. Eleanor graduated from Duluth Central High School and the Superior State Teachers College. She taught high school chemistry in Rose City, Mich., and taught at Jeffers High School in Paynsdale, Mich., and St. Croix Falls High School, Wis.

Following several years of teaching, Eleanor returned to Duluth and worked in local hospitals. She then attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Ph.D. in chemistry with a specialty in toxicology. Following graduation, Eleanor worked at the Illinois Masonic Hospital and the Heocktone Institute, which later became the Cook County Hospital. She retired in the mid-1990s after more than 30 years of employment in Chicago. Eleanor was also a consultant for the National Bureau of Standards.

She was preceded in death by a brother, H.G.I. Berman; an infant sister, Alice Berman; and her parents, Morris and Lena Berman.

Eleanor is survived by her nephews, Allan (Sally) Berman of Ontonagon, Mich., and Anthony (Phyllis) Berman of Rochester, Minn.; great-nieces Jennifer and Erin Berman; and a great-nephew, Adam Berman.

Funeral: 1 p.m. Thursday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Burial in Shaara Tzedek cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Mary L. Geisert

Mary L. Geisert, 85, formerly of West Ideal Street died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Mary was born in Virginia to Neil and Cecile (Stubbs) Mathison and has lived in Duluth for most of her life. Mary was a baker and housekeeper for the Kitchi Gammi Club, member of the Owls Auxiliary, past president of the Eagles Auxiliary 79, and a member of the RAC.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard "Howie" in 1997; her parents; a sister, Cecile McNett; and a brother, Neil Mathison.

Mary is survived by sons William and Gerald (Sharon), both of Duluth; daughters Rae (Larry) Vallie of Duluth and Marlene Geisert-Sather of Sandstone; a brother, Gordon Mathison of Lakeworth, Fla.; grandchildren Jeffrey, Leigh, Deborah, Kris, Cheryl, Lynette and April; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Chris Jensen for the wonderful care they gave Mary.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon service Saturday in Peace United Church of Christ. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Peggy Gallant Harjung

Peggy Gallant Harjung, 56, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in her home in Fallbrook, Calif., following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Margaret Ann Gallant Aug. 1, 1944, in Duluth. She attended St. Jeans and Holy Rosary grade schools and graduated from Stanbrook Hall in 1962. She was active in local sports playing hockey at Lower Chester and baseball with the C.Z. Wilson championship teams. She attended St. Cloud State University, worked for a time in First American Bank in Duluth and was a stewardess with North Central Airlines for seven years. She married Marine Corps Capt. Bruce Harjung of St. Paul in Holy Rosary Church in Duluth Oct. 11, 1969. She has lived in Fallbrook, near Camp Pendleton, since 1982.

She was active as a Eucharistic minister of St. Peter's Catholic Community Church, Fallbrook, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and local civic and golf organizations. Peggy lived her life fully giving unconditional love and inspiration to everyone she met.

She was preceded in death by her birth father, Army Sgt. Jack Gallant of Duluth, who was killed in action Feb. 8, 1945, during liberation of the Philippines in World War II.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce; a daughter, Kirsten Harjung of St. Louis Park, Minn.; a son, Eric serving in the Navy; her parents, Wesley and Vivian Harkins of Duluth; siblings, including her twin sister, Jackie (Glen) Kotlarek of Duluth, Rick (Debbie) Harkins of Rocky River, Ohio; Ken (Charlene) Harkins of Duluth, Jan Harkins (Blaine Hedberg) of Reedsburg, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Memorial luncheon: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Moose Club, 411 N. 57th Ave. W., Duluth. Family and friends are invited to gather and share in special memories. A memorial Mass was held March 11, 2001, in St. Peter's Church, Fallbrook. Any donations will be sent to the Fallbrook Hospice Program.

William A. Sysimaki

William A. Sysimaki, 84, of Duluth died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center with his family lovingly by his side.

Born in Laurium, Mich., to Onni and Jenny Lahti Sysimaki, he was a 1936 graduate of Duluth Central High School. William was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 85th Infantry Division in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operations, where he received a Bronze Star. He was also involved musically in the military.

He married Helen Mary Arminen in Duluth on Sept. 5, 1945. William worked in the former Marshall-Wells and later in Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Company, from which he retired. An accomplished violinist, he had over the years formed several bands. He was also an active volunteer with the fifth-grade class in Hermantown Middle School for several years.

William was a humble, gentle and compassionate man who enjoyed the simple things in life like walking and meeting people. An interesting and interested man, he sought first to understand and then be understood. His motto was "If you feel good, feel real good."

He is survived by his wife, Helen Mary; a daughter, Linda (Brad) Habberstad, and granddaughters Nikki and Katie, all of Hermantown; a son, Jim (Heather) Sysimaki, and granddaughter Kaija and grandson Ari, all of Onalaska, Wis. He will sadly be missed by family and friends.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and service 2 p.m. Saturday in Grace Lutheran Church. Burial in Park Hill cemetery.

Dale Norton Nelson

Dale Norton Nelson, 60, of West Fifth Street died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in his home.

He was born March 12, 1940, in Duluth to Gordon and Marguerite Hobbins Nelson. He was formerly a truck driver, having worked for Sundeen Distributing, Duluth Delivery and Lakehead Transportation. He was also a bartender for Boomers Bar.

Dale is survived by his brother, James of Duluth; nephews Jay and Jefferson, both of Duluth, and John of Phoenix; and a niece, Jody Nelson of Duluth.

Visitation: 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. service Saturday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Burial in Park Hill cemetery.

Leonard Lind

Leonard Lind, 70, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Lancaster, Calif.

He was born May 19, 1930, in Duluth. He retired from Fairchild Stratos, Manhattan Beach, Calif., at age 55. Leonard was a man whom family came first in his life. He was a simple man whose only pleasure seemed to be in making others happy. His family treasured him and his grandson says it best, "Papa was the most honest and kind man I had ever known and all that knew him loved him." Some men think medals and many material things are important but Leonard thought the love of his family was the most important.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce; daughters Pam (Dan) Simpson of Spokane, Wash., and Debra Von-Lindh and son-in-law Darrell Brown, both of California City, Calif.; grandchildren Shawn Capko and Danielle Simpson; brothers Hjalmer (Marion) of Orlando, Fla., and Jerry of Oceanside, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Jimmy Luhm of Duluth; a sister-in-law, Sally Sturm of Duluth; and many nieces and nephews.

Inurnment at a later date in Spokane. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leonard's name to Faith Community Church, 39100 10th St. W., Palmdale, CA 93551. Arrangements by Halley-Olsen-Murphy Memorial Chapels & Crematory, Palmdale.

Harry B. "Tim" Stoker

Harry B. "Tim" Stoker, 73, of Wayzata, Minn., formerly of Duluth died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in University Medical Center, Tucson, Ariz.

Mr. Stoker was a retired grain executive, avid sportsman and devoted husband and father.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shush; sons Jay (Kitty) Stoker of Minneapolis and Pete (Amy) Stoker of St. Louis, MO; a daughter, Julie (Steve) Purdum, Grand Rapids; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Celebration of Tim's life is held today in his home in Tucson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Minnetonka Center for the Arts, 2240 N. Shore Drive, Wayzata, MN 55391 or the Delta Waterfowl Association, 1830 N. 11th, P.O. Box 3128, Bismarck ND 58502. Arrangements by Adair Funeral Home, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd., Tucson. (520) 326-4343.

Iola V. Carlson

Iola V. Carlson, 84, formerly of Birchwood Drive died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 9, 1916, in Granite Falls, Minn., to William and Ida Minton. She had lived in Mitchell, S.D., and Superior before moving to Duluth in 1959. She retired in 1971 as a secretary in the University of Minnesota Duluth. After she and her husband, Paul W. Carlson retired, they spent their winters in Rockport, Texas.

Iola was a member of the Salvation Army, Duluth and VFW Auxiliary Post 3904, Rockport.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul W. Carlson, who died July 2, 2000; and a sister, Inez McGee.

She is survived by a brother, Donald Minton of Sioux City, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Stacy (Thomas) Kearns of Lacy, Wash.; stepsons Bruce Carlson of Moose Lake and William Carlson of Arcadia, Calif; and five step-grandchildren.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial in Park Hill cemetery.

Katheryn S. Fulcer

Katheryn S. Fulcer, 87, of East Third Street died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in her residence.

Born April 27, 1913, in Ogden, Iowa, she was a longtime Superior resident.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Luther W. Anderson in 1961.

Mrs. Fulcer is survived by sons James (Katrine) Anderson of Duluth and Thomas (Beverly) Anderson of Superior; a sister, Fannie (Andrew) Rubis of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and grandchildren Cari (Dale Carlquist) Anderson, Lee Anderson, Elizabeth Anderson, Aaron Anderson and Adam Anderson.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. memorial service Saturday in Downs Funeral Home, Superior. The Rev. Alan Cutter of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Duluth officiating. Inurnment in Greenwood cemetery.
