Mabel E. Drake
Mabel E. Drake, 90, of Longview, Wash., and formerly of Duluth, passed away recently.
She was born Dec. 18, 1910, in Mason City, Iowa, to William and Elizabeth (Kelly) Hyland. She was a graduate of Denfeld High School in 1928. She lived in Duluth from 1916 to 1989 when she moved to Oregon.

She is survived by her husband, Chester Drake of Longview; a son, William Drake of Duluth; daughters Joan Enloe of Central Point, Ore., and Carole Holt and Karen McGath of Longview; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service: 1 p.m. Saturday at Oneota cemetery.

Bonnie M. Mattson
Bonnie M. Mattson, 58, of North 60th Avenue West died Friday, June 1, 2001, in her home.
She was born July 20, 1942, to Albin "Holger" and Isabelle "Bunny" Peterson in Carlton. She was a graduate of Denfeld High School and a member of Augustana Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albin in 1986.

She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Mattson of Duluth and Mollie (Scott) Haag of Grand Forks, N.D.; her mother, Isabelle "Bunny" Peterson of Duluth; grandchildren Nicholas and Chase; and a brother, Ron (Bette) Peterson of Woodbury, Minn.
Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Augustana Lutheran Church, Midway Township, the Rev. Victor Nelson officiating. Burial in Augustana Lutheran Church cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Mary Lou Brackett
Mary Lou Brackett, 92, of the The Episcopal Church Home of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minn., on May 30, 2001.
Survived by adult children, Cynthia Brackett Driscoll, Thomas Anthony Brackett, Barbara Hoff Chrane, Norton (Tony) Clark Hoff and Anne Elizabeth (Mystie); 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

preceded in death by husbands; Clyde Martin Hoff, Duluth, and John Chapin Brackett, St. Paul; and son Thomas Clelland Hoff.
Memorial service at a later date, St. John the Evangelist Church, St. Paul. Memorials preferred to St. John the Evangelist Church, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, St. Paul YWCA, and DARTS.

Clarence R. Andros
Clarence R. Andros, 81, of Duluth passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He went home to be with his Lord and his beloved wife Charlotte. Born Dec. 6, 1919, in Duluth, he attended and graduated from Denfeld High School and was in the honor society. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was employed by Butler Shipyards, Western Electric, and St. Louis County Highway Department, from which he retired.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charlotte; and a brother.

He is survived by a stepdaughter, Lynn (Jim) Pohl and family.

Clarence was much loved, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
A private service and interment was held April 20, the Rev. Father James Datko, O.M.I. officiating. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Kenneth Eugene Main
Kenneth Eugene Main, 67, of Burger Drive passed away Saturday, April 21, 2001, in his home.
He was born Dec. 28, 1933, in Eden Prairie, Minn., to Harold and Daisy Main. Kenneth married Jessie MacMillan in 1953 in Wisconsin; she passed away in September 1978. He then married Marion Jensen Feb. 14, 1982, in Duluth. Kenneth was employed as a truck driver for Elliott's Meats for over 32 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Teamsters Local 346 for more than 50 years and also volunteered for the Salvation Army for several years. Kenneth was an avid fisherman, hunter and loved camping. He spent many years camping and fishing at Boulder Lake just north of Duluth.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Jessie; and stepsons, David and Ronald Booth.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Marion; daughters Debra (Ernest) Bartlett of Britt, Bonnie Main of Biwabik, Lyndie (Dan) Hietala of Forest Lake, Minn., Lisa (Jim) Askelson of Duluth and Susan (John) Pearson of Fredenberg; a son, Harold "Butch" (Debbie) Main of Duluth; a stepdaughter, Loretta Greenberg of Satellite Beach, Fla.; a stepson, Thomas (Janelle) Booth of Hutchinson, Minn.; a brother, Paul Johnson of West Fargo, N.D.; a sister, Elaine Johnson of West Dundee, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Kenneth's life: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St. with his special son-in-law, Dan Hietala presiding. Private burial of cremated remains at a later date.

John Klints Sr.
John Klints Sr., 77, of the Woodland area went home to be with the Lord April 20, 2001.
He died peacefully in his home following a long battle with paralysis after suffering a stroke.

He was born Dec. 16, 1923, in Rega, Latvia. He met his wife, Ausma, in Latvia and two years later, in 1947, they were married in Germany. They moved to Duluth in 1951.

John was a heavy equipment operator and worked for Nels Nelson & Sons for more than 22 years, until his disability forced him to retire. He was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49. Before his disability, he enjoyed his hobby farm, fishing, motorcycles and his Mercedes-Benz. Afterward, he enjoyed his many animal friends by his bedside.

He is survived by his wife, Ausma; a daughter, Rasma Klints-Simonson of Duluth; a son, John Klints Jr. of Duluth; grandchildren Dustin, Jason and Heather Simonson, and Christina and Jayme Klints; a great-grandson, Joel; and other relatives in Latvia.

"We love you Daddy, and we will miss you dearly!"
Memorial service: 3 p.m. Monday in Resurrection Fellowship Church, Pastor James Maina officiating. A private family committal service will be held in Forest Hill cemetery prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.

Lawrence H. "Jack" Jackson
Lawrence H. "Jack" Jackson, 87, of Cheyenne, Wyo., formerly of Duluth passed away Monday, April 9, 2001, in Cheyenne.
He was born Aug. 22, 1913. He retired at 62 from the Northern Pacific/Burlington Northern Railroad, where he worked as an oiler. Lawrence loved to travel, visiting and vacationing everywhere from New York to California. He married Carol G. Knudsen on Aug. 27, 1948.

He was preceded in death by his parents; all his brothers and sisters; and a daughter, Linda.

He is survived by wife, Carol; and several nieces and nephews.
No services. Burial in Park Hill cemetery.

Bruce R. Jonell
Bruce R. Jonell, 77, St. Louis Park, Minn., formerly of Duluth, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in Minneapolis.
He is survived by his wife Lucille; four sons; 11 grandchildren; a brother and two sisters.
Burial: Burial was in Fort Snelling National cemetery, Minneapolis.

Elly Kanuit
Elly Kanuit, 79, of West 10th Street died Thursday, June 21, 2001, in her home.
She was born in Sommerheld, Germany, July 19, 1921, to Otto and Martha Zorn. She married Louis L. Kanuit Nov. 22, 1951, in Frankfurt, Germany. She had worked in the MMC Sewing Factory in Duluth, and Haggers Clothing in Oklahoma City.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She very much enjoyed crocheting and gardening as her pastimes and spending time with her companion, Fritz the cat.

She is survived by her husband, Louis; brother in-law, Tom (Barb) Kanuit of Duluth; sister in-law, Rita (Royal) Miller of Two Harbors; nieces Tammi Magnuson, Miki Kanuit, Gloria Kersten, and nephew, Steve Miller.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Interment in Polish Catholic cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home 600 E. Second St.

Dorothy Marie Soberg
Dorothy Marie Soberg, 86, of Spokane, Wash., died Wednesday, May 23, 2001.
Born in Duluth, she graduated from Morgan Park High School and Duluth Business University. She married Elden Soberg in 1942. She lived in Spokane for 49 years and worked at Columbia Electric for 23 years, retiring in 1980. Her husband died in 1994.

Survivors include sons Dennis and Craig Soberg, both of Spokane, and Peter Soberg of Wellington, Nev.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was June 2 in Audubon Park United Methodist Church, Spokane. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children or National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

A. Jeanne Nossum
A. Jeanne Nossum, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., died peacefully Friday, June 15, 2001, just 15 days short of her 87th birthday, at the home of her daughter on Bainbridge Island.
Jeanne was born July 1, 1914, in Superior, to Clara and Oscar Stevens. She and her husband, Stanley, spent the early years of their marriage in Duluth, where Jeanne was employed by the Coolerator Co. until it closed. Following a move to Bainbridge Island in 1955, Jeanne worked for the Washington State Ferry System as a food service worker and enjoyed the experience of serving on the ferry, Evergreen State, on its maiden voyage.

In 1960, she and Stanley moved to southern California, where they spent the next 25 years. During that time Jeanne was a foster parent to several foster children and in 1995, on the occasion of her 81st birthday, was honored by the state of California for her work in foster care.

In her later years she traveled extensively, including a trip to Norway at age 80, where she rode a bobsled on wheels down the Olympic course in Lillehammer.

She returned to Bainbridge Island three years ago. She had a true servant's heart and in spite of her failing vision, continued to minister to others whenever possible, including being a telephone visitor for Lutheran Family Services. She was a sweet fragrance to all who knew her and was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Nothing pleased her more than spending time with her family.

Jeanne is survived by her son, James and daughter-in-law, Marge, of Sandy, Ore.; her daughter, Vivian Burnett and son-in-law, William, of Bainbridge Island; a sister, Grace Erickson of Duluth; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be in July with burial next to her husband in Tahoma National cemetery. Remembrances may be sent to City Church of Arroyo Grande, P.O. Box 1410, Arroyo Grande, Calif.

June Shirley (Phegley) (Koneczny) Ide
June Shirley (Phegley) (Koneczny) Ide, 83, of Duluth died Friday, May 25, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth Koneczny; three sisters and four brothers.

She was the beloved mother of Shirley Jamison, Marjorie Messinne and Gary (Kathy) Koneczny; and is also survived by nine grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Swenson of Moose Lake; many nieces and nephews.
Interment: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Polish Catholic cemetery, Duluth. A gathering of friends and family follows at 3 p.m. in the community room of Pine Grove Apartments, 4082 Haines Road. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 624-4838.
