Verle Marguerite DeNio
Verle Marguerite DeNio, 92, of West Duluth died Monday, July 2, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born in Aitkin to Oscar E. and Estella (Brown) Davis. She was a longtime Duluth resident. Verle was a member of the former Good Shepherd Catholic Church. She worked as a beautician, retiring in 1949, and then worked at the Hotel Duluth.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Sr. in 1965; her parents; four brothers; and a granddaughter.
Surviving are a son, Thomas H. Jr. (Mary) of Duluth; daughters Marguerite E. (Sonny) Love and Genny L. (Jim) Hinnenkamp of Duluth; and grandchildren Richard, Keith, Leora, Jimmy and Cassie.
A private family service will take place at a later date. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel.
Gertrude Link Klippen
Gertrude Link Klippen died Sunday, July 1, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center following complications from surgery.
Mrs. Klippen was born July 11, 1908, in Brainerd. She graduated from Brainerd High School, Duluth Normal School and then the University of Minnesota Duluth. Gertrude taught for many years at various elementary schools in St. Louis County from Orr to Proctor. She retired from the Proctor School District after more than 40 years of formally educating younger people.
She married
Herbert C. Klippen in July 1939. Mr. Klippen was a highly successful general contractor in Duluth for many years, and Gertrude was his support and his soul mate.
She was a member of St. Michael's Church, Northland Country Club and Kitchi Gammi Club. She was active for many years in St. Mary's Medical Center Auxiliary and many other charitable activities.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, and her parents, Anton and Anna Link.
She is survived by her sister, Elaine (Howard) Haak of Proctor; her sisters-in-law, Norma (Leo) Klippen Fishbach of Mellen, Wis., and Zora Klippen of Maple Lake; nieces and nephews, the Rev. Kristine (Tom) Fahey, the Rev. Dr. Caroline (Michael) Garman, Barbara Rasmussen, Lawrence (Candy) Fishbach, Margaret (Scott) Glocken, Herbert (Megan) Klippen, Kenneth (Patricia) Klippen, John Christopher (Sue) Klippen, Cathy (Brian) Neugebauer and Nina (Thomas) Herndon. She is also survived by her goddaughters, Dr. Carol Stenroos of Rochester, Mich., and Patricia Todd of Minneapolis and her son, Richard Burns of Duluth.
Gertrude outlived most in her own generation, but she brought life, joy and perspective to her many friends of other generations.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. A time of sharing will follow the service. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Friday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, the Rev. Ruth L. Kane
Ruth L. Kane, 83, formerly of Ramsey Manor, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
She was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Chicago to Frank and Nora Rouse. Ruth grew up and attended school in Chicago. She had been a St. Paul resident before moving to Duluth 28 years ago.
Ruth's true love in life was her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward L. Kane in 1985; and a brother, Wilbur Rouse.
Survivors include sons Judd (Paula) and George (Becky), both of Duluth; a stepson, Edward L. Jr. (Peggy) of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; grandchildren Daniel (Darcy), Mark, Nicole, Steven, Michael, Robert and Joseph Kane, and Jessica (Brian) Kohne; and great-grandchildren Carter, Robert and Alyssa Kane, and Austin Kohne.

Earl L. Henton

Earl L. Henton, veteran Duluth radio-television personality, died Monday, June 25, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, following a brief illness. He was 88.
Mr. Henton, whose career in broadcasting spanned more than 42 years, was hired as a staff announcer in 1940 at KWLM in Wilmar, Minn. In 1943 he joined the staff of WEBC in Duluth, as radio newscaster and program director. After 10 years he moved on to KDAL radio to assist management in preparing its application for a television broadcast license. He remained there and at KDLH-TV, Channel 3, for 30 years as television program director and news anchor, until his retirement in 1983.
In addition to appearing on Channel 3's television news, Mr. Henton also hosted a special series for the Minnesota mining industry, conducting TV visits to iron mining operations in several states and Canada. The popular program "Producer's Playhouse" featured a late-night movie uninterrupted by commercials.
He was born in Osseo, Minn., to James and Katherine (Grien) Henton on April 19, 1913. An Eagle Scout, he graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School and then earned a degree in English literature at Hamline University in 1936. Four years later, he began his long career before the microphone and camera.
He married
Marvis Henrickson on March 23, 1956.
Mr. Henton was a member of Lake Superior Masonic Lodge 349, the Duluth Scottish Rite bodies, where he received the fraternity's highest honor, the 33rd Degree of Freemasonry. He also served three terms as Grand Orator of the Grand Lodge of Minnesota and was a member of the Duluth Preceptory, DeMolay Legion of Honor.
He was a member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church in Duluth, where he was a deacon and elder. He was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Friends of the Library. He also served as a director of St. Louis County Federal Savings and Loan, a member of the Duluth Arena-Auditorium board and was co-chairman of the building fund for the Salvation Army.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lee.
He is survived by his wife, Marvis; a daughter, Judy Cox; grandchildren Russ and Katy Cox of Arden Hills, Minn.; and Katherine Leland Longrie of Racine, Wis., a daughter by a previous marriage.

Anna Bertha Kupczynski
Anna Bertha Kupczynski, 98, lifelong resident of Duluth died Sunday, June 24, 2001, in Viewcrest Nursing Home.
She was born May 21, 1903, to Peter and Mary (Hajduk) Sojka. She worked at Kresge's, Patrick's, Mendehal Graham, and as a housekeeper. She married
Joseph Kupczynski on June 4, 1933. Joseph died March 20, 1989.
She was a member of Duluth Heights Garden Club, Women's Christian Association, St. Josephat's National Catholic Church, American Legion 265 and Duluth Heights Community Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Kupczynski; an infant daughter, Joann Kupczynski; brothers Peter, John, Louis and Martin Sojka; and sisters Sophie Janczak, Elizabeth Koscielak, Mary Luczak and Veronica Sojka.
Anna is survived by a sister, Pauline Rumble, and many nieces and nephews.

Robin Lee (Hill) Franckowiak
Robin Lee (Hill) Franckowiak, 33, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, as a result of an automobile accident.
Robin was born Oct. 17, 1967, in Duluth to George and Geraldine (Brents) Ridgley. Robin graduated from Unity School of Duluth, Fond du Lac Community College for law enforcement and was currently employed with Wisconsin State Department of Corrections.
Robin was a caring and outgoing person who loved collectibles. She loved life and will be sadly missed by all her family and friends, whom she loved and who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Mary Sykes.
Survivors include her mother, Geraldine Gatlin; brothers Clarence (Jennifer) Hill and Kenneth W. (Janet) Hill of Superior, and Kirk (Tamra) Hill of Cloquet; a sister, Amber Hill of Wausau, Wis.; nieces and nephews Derek, Shayna, Kenneth Jr. and Allissa Hill, Lona and Carly Scouton, Travis, Jacob, Brandon and BreeAnna Hill; and special aunt, Terry (Bob) Hanninen.

Della Sue Rowan
Della Sue Rowan, 46, of North 60th Avenue West died Sunday, June 24, 2001, in her home.
Della was born in Chicago to Gilbert and Virginia Perry and had lived in Duluth most of her life.
She was preceded in death by her father and a son, Jason.
Surviving are her husband, Pat H.; sons Robert L., serving in the Army in Georgia, and Jarad W. of Duluth; her mother, Virginia Shannon of St. Louis, Mo.; brothers Gilbert (Sonny) Perry of Cloquet, Charles Perry of Maplewood, Minn., John Henry Perry of Superior and Franklin Peckron of Duluth; sisters Donna Anderson and Francis Perry of Duluth; daughter-in-law Michelle Rowan; a granddaughter, Cassie; an aunt, Gracie Chapik of Duluth; her mother and father-in-law, Leo and Maryann Rowan of Duluth; and nieces and nephews.
Della will be missed by her loving family and friends.
