Mary Sue Fisher (nee Erickson)
Mary Sue Fisher (nee Erickson), 56, of Edina, formerly of Duluth, passed away peacefully Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
She went to be with the Lord; her son, Drew; and her parents.
Survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Angie and Matt, Stephanie and Chris; a grandson, Eli, and expected grandchild. Also survived by a brother; a sister; nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
Mary Sue was particularly proud of her family and friends, all of whom will greatly miss her kindness, selflessness, strength, humor, dignity, patience and, most of all, love.
Visitation: 6 until the 7 p.m. memorial Mass Monday in Grace Catholic Church, 5071 Eden Ave., Edina. Burial in Two Harbors Sept. 15 in Lakeview cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the family.
Alvin L. Paulson
Alvin L. Paulson, 80, of Champlin, Minn., formerly of the Florence Avenue area of Duluth, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, in North Ridge Care Center, New Hope, Minn.
Alvin was born Aug. 29, 1921, in Duluth to Verner and Lena (Smith) Paulson. He was a World War II veteran. He and Grace O. (Carlsness) were married
for 51 years. He worked for 31 years for the Post Office, retiring in 1977 as postmaster of Two Harbors. After retiring, he was the account representative at the State Capital Credit Union Office UMD, now known as Affinity.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Hazel Lee; and a brother, Norman Paulson.
Survivors include his wife, Grace; daughters Jane (Phil) Nomura, Debbie (Kevin) Galligan; a son, Allan Paulson; grandchildren Matthew, Luke, Jared, Jennifer and Philip; a sister, Lois Carlson.
Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday in Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home, 2005 Branch Ave., Anoka, MN 55303, (763) 421-0220, Pastor Kari Bahe officiating. Interment in Fort Snelling National cemetery, Minneapolis.
Junko Johnson
Junko Johnson, 79, of Duluth died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
A resident of Duluth since the 1960s, she was born Junko Mouri, the second of three children to Motoki and Tane Mouri, Dec. 25, 1922. Mrs. Johnson's father was an attorney serving in the Japanese Imperial Army during the occupation of Korea, so Mrs. Johnson was a Japanese national born in Seoul, Korea.
She was employed for over 20 years in Duluth, which included 13 years at Jeno's. Mrs. Johnson was baptized as a Jehovah's Witness Dec. 6, 1969. She was a long-standing member of the Enger Park Congregation of the Jehovah Witnesses.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Reiko Takaei.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband of 50 years, James L. Johnson of Duluth, whom she married
Feb. 18, 1951, in Japan. She is also survived by a brother, Kenichi Toyooka of Tokyo; a daughter, Noriko (Takasi) Kanda of Osaka, Japan; sons Shigeki Yamaga of Tottori, Japan, and Frank Johnson of Richardson, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. today in the Jehovah Witness facility, Anderson Road.
Catherine M. Hetherington Berg
Catherine M. Hetherington Berg, 86, of Grand Avenue, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
She was born in Aitkin to Alexander and Mary Hetherington and the family moved to Morgan Park in 1918. Mrs. Berg was employed for 29 years and was the display manager with J.C. Penney Company, retiring in 1980. She was a member of United Protestant Church of Morgan Park, West Duluth Women's Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Her husband, Stanley, died in 1969, and she was also preceded in death by her sister, Daisy Swanson; a brother, Alec; and nephew Curtis Hetherington.
She is survived by her nieces, Sandra (William) Grondahl, Penny (David) Baumgarten, and Faye Anderson, all of Duluth, Judy (Lance) Kerness of Las Vegas, Kathi (Randi) Borgman and Betti (Bob) McKenzie, both of California; nephew Donald (Chris) Anderson of Colorado; and brother-in-law Richard (Annie) Berg of Oregon.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in United Protestant Church of Morgan Park with burial in Oneota cemetery. The family prefers memorials be directed to United Protestant Church. Arrangements are by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Anna K. Rud, 103, passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, in the Franciscan Health Center in Duluth.
Anna was born in Finland.
A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in Sunrise cemetery, Duluth. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service.
Elaine McLeod
Elaine McLeod, 61, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, in her home surrounded by her family following a long battle with cancer.
Elaine was born and raised in Duluth.

LeRoy "Roy" Pearl, 80, of Merrifield, Minn., died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; four daughters; two sons; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Church of the Nazarene, Merrifield. Twin Cities services will be 11 a.m. Monday with visitation an hour before the service in Morris Nilsen Chapel, Richfield, Minn. Burial with military honors in Fort Snelling National cemetery. Barbara Elizabeth "Aunt Liz" Wendfeldt
Barbara Elizabeth "Aunt Liz" Wendfeldt, 88, of Duluth died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center.
A lifelong Duluth resident, she was born Oct. 21, 1912, to Hans and Judith (Lindgren) Farver. She was a founding member of Chester Park United Methodist Church.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; her brother and sister-in-law, Hans and Alice Farver; her husbands, Ludvig Wendfeldt and Albert Wendfeldt.
Aunt Liz is survived by a loving circle of family and friends. The Houston, Texas, family extends sincere thanks to Geneva Anderson and family, special friend Ernie Anderson, and the caring staff of Chris Jensen (Spruce wing).

Frank Samuel Amendola
Frank Samuel Amendola, 80, of Miller Creek Drive died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point health care facility.
Frank was born April 17, 1921, in Chisholm to Thomas and Angeline Colalillo Amendola. He moved to Duluth as a child and went to Duluth Central High School. He married
Lorraine Joyce Gifford Nov. 8, 1941. Frank served in World War II as an aerial gunner with the 456th Bomber Group. He returned to Duluth and worked as a mason and later an estimator for the JD Harrold Co.
In 1965, he founded Amendola Construction Co. from which he retired in 1989.
Frank was past president and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Duluth Rotary Club 25. He was past president of the Duluth Builders Exchange, a life member of VFW Post 137, a member of the Elks Club, and the American Legion, Duluth Chamber of Commerce. He received a 50-year pin from the Bricklayers Union Local 3.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Nell Fachin Amendola; a stepbrother, Edward Lanaro; and a stepsister, Dorothy Jeanette.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine "Larry" of Duluth; sons Frank Jr. (Marilyn) of Duluth, Wayne (Betsy) of Livingston, Texas, Joseph of Duluth; a daughter, Lori (Roger) Martell of Duluth; and sisters Mary Michelizzi, Carmen (Ed) Orman and Susan Pevestorf, all of Duluth; stepsister Jean Hanson of Duluth; a stepbrother, Thomas (Jane) of Duluth; grandchildren Lyne, Kevin, Jeffrey and Wayne Jr., Gregory, Gary, Brett and Brianna, Jason and Jeremy; and great-grandchildren Madison and Megan.
Frank especially enjoyed fishing and camping at Lake of the Woods, his cabin on Lake Vermilion, and his winter residence in Punta Gorda, Fla. His other hobbies included photography, gardening and trap shooting.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Dougherty Funeral Home, where service will be 11 a.m. Monday. Memorials to St. Mary's Foundation, Wes Westmoreland Rotary, or St. Scholastica Tower Fund.

Catherine M. Hetherington Berg, 86, of Grand Avenue, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
She was born in Aitkin to Alexander and Mary Hetherington and the family moved to Morgan Park in 1918. Mrs. Berg was employed for 29 years by JC Penney Co. as the display manager, retiring in 1980. She was a member of United Protestant Church of Morgan Park, West Duluth Women's Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Catherine was an accomplished pianist and played for the Joyce Torvund School of Dance. She also volunteered her time playing for various community groups.
Her husband, Stanley, died in 1969, and she was also preceded in death by her sister, Daisy Swanson; a brother, Alec Hetherington; and nephew Curtis Hetherington.
She is survived by her nieces, Sandra (William) Grondahl, Penny (David) Baumgarten and Faye Anderson, all of Duluth, Judy (Lance) Kerness of Las Vegas, Kathi (Rande) Borgman and Betti (Bob) McKenzie, both of California; nephew Tom (Judy) Berg; and brother-in-law, Richard (Annie) Berg of Oregon.

Catherine Elizabeth Crago
Catherine Crago, 95, of Keystone Heights, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, in Gainesville, Fla.
Mrs. Crago was born in Duluth and after retirement, in 1967 moved to Keystone Heights. She attended Stetson University. She worked for St. Louis County and the city of Duluth in administrative functions. She was a member of Melrose United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Crago; two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include a son, Ward Crago of Gainesville; a daughter, Marcia McKim of Suisun City, Calif.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorials preferred to the donor's favorite charity.
