Mildred Alice Weber
Mildred Alice Weber died peacefully Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, in Friendship Village, Bloomington, Minn.
She was born March 21, 1903, and was formerly of Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter.

She is survived by sons Ronald (Mary Ann) of Minneapolis and James (Nancy) of Denver; granddaughters and husbands, Jeanne and David Dentzel, Lisa and Roger Hutchison, and Maribeth and Robert Marchi; grandson Craig and fiancee, Melanie Dahlberg; great-grandchildren Charles Dentzel, Sean and Kristen Hutchison, and Lucas Marchi.
Memorial service: 12:30 p.m. Monday in Friendship Village, 8100 Highwood Drive, Bloomington. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota, Edina Chapel, (952) 924-4100.

Betsy P. Maki
Betsy P. Maki, 71, of Eveleth passed away Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital after a lengthy battle with leukemia, surrounded by her family.
She was born June 14, 1930, in Duluth to Carl and Maude (Stauffacher) Olin. Betsy graduated from Denfeld High School in 1948. She worked at Woodwards Bookstore in Virginia. Betsy was a member and deacon of Hope Community Presbyterian Church in Virginia, Order of the Eastern Star-Euclid and Star of the East Chapters, past president of American Legion Auxiliary Pratt-Volden Unit 239, Cook VFW Auxiliary, life member and past president of American Legion West Duluth Unit Auxiliary 71. Betsy was also a two times past Eighth District President of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester, in 1992; and sister, Elaine McGillvry.

She is survived by her daughters Judith (fiance Tim Beede) Gautsch of Duluth, Vicki Rekonen, and Pamela (Michael) Skule, all of Eveleth; son David (Jean) Cole of Everett, Wash.; grandchildren, Kathleen Carl, Erik Rekonen, Justin Stanaway, Alicia Stanaway, Heidi Cole and John Cole; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey (Gordon) Hulett of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and three very special friends, Mary Lawrence and Pheobe Seaberg, both of Duluth and Jeanette Nelson of Virginia.
Memorial service: at 1 p.m. Friday in Hope Community Presbyterian Church in Virginia, with Pastor Frank Davis officiating. Burial of cremated remains will take place in Greenwood cemetery in Virginia. Services entrusted to Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth.

Robert D. Hookland
Robert D. Hookland, 73, died suddenly Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born Jan. 21, 1928, to Chris and Ruth (Legacy) Hookland in Duluth. He served in the Army from 1945-1948, worked briefly for Zenith Machine Co., N.P. Ry, before joining Kindy Lyon Optical Co. He operated a service station from 1967-1970, when he and his wife, Bernice, purchased Big Lake Resort in Cloquet. They operated the resort until 1976. He then worked for the Minnesota State Department of Public Safety as a vehicle inspector at the weigh station in Saginaw until his retirement in 1990.

He was a member of the Army Reserves, AARP, VFW Post 137 in Duluth, American Legion Post 71 in Duluth and Minnesota Retired State Employees Association. He was an avid collector of nostalgia and antiques.

Robert is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bernice; sons Brian (Lindy) Hookland of Lancaster Calif., Kurt (Jamie) Hookland of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; daughters Carol (Ralph) Lockman of Duluth, Penny (Jeff) Ford of Wiggins, Miss., and Jeanne (John) Bunnell of Superior; grandchildren Weston Lockman, Jordan (Alisa) Lockman, Darcy (Shawn) Norris, Chad Hookland, Kevin and Katelyn Hookland, Brandon, Bradley and David Ford, and Sabrina Bunnell; a great-grandchild, Blake Norris; brothers Ronald (Helen) Hookland of Lompoc, Calif., and Chris (Ruth) Hookland of Grand Rapids; sisters Lorraine (Clare) Peterson of Pomona, Calif., Marlene (Edwin) Geary of Yucca Valley, Calif., and Joan (William) Porter of Cambridge, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

His sense of humor and good heart will be greatly missed by all his family and his many friends.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Duluth Clinic West, St. Mary's Medical Center and Gold Cross Ambulance Services for their help and support.
Family will greet friends 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth, where the memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Pastor Dean Bjorlin officiating. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date. Services entrusted to Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth.

Weikko Leslie Harrison
Weikko Leslie Harrison, 79, lifelong resident of Duluth passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Nursing Home.
He was born in Duluth to Alina (Pulkinen) and Esa Harrison on March 8, 1922. He attended Duluth public schools and was a retired assistant greenskeeper of Northland Country Club after 27 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Esa and Alina; his twin brother, Wilho; his sister Alice Harrison and her twin Alan Palo.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Harrison; two nephews; three nieces; and two cousins, all living in Minnesota.
Service: 11 a.m. today in Johnson Mortuary, with burial to follow in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson Mortuary.

Vieno Ekman Roos
Vieno Ekman Roos, 90, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, in Eastwood Nursing Center, Negaunee, Mich., where she was receiving care after surgery.
She was born July 3, 1911, in Negaunee to Jacob and Justina Kujala. She lived in Duluth for 24 years and was an office manager for Ekman Transfer. She made Virginia her winter home for the past three years and spent her summers in Michigan.

She was preceded in death by by her first husband, Edward Ekman; her second husband, George Roos; her parents; five brothers and a sister.

She is survived by her son, Eugene (Lorraine) Ekman of Aurora; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Aili Talus of Ishpeming, Mich.

Murlin F. "Irish" Dunlap
Murlin F. "Irish" Dunlap, 84, formerly of East Seventh Street and Franciscan Health Center, left us Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born in Prior Lake, Minn., on Sept. 27, 1916, and grew up in St. Paul. She was a veteran of World war II, having served as a WAC with the Air Force in California. Irish moved to Duluth in 1951 and worked as a dental technician for Zibell Dental Lab and also for a lab in Superior.

She was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

Irish was preceded in death by her parents, Samual and Frances Dunlap; her sisters Bea Weiss and Mary Dunlap; and her brother Bob.

She is survived by her sister, Grace (Joe) Knollmaier of White Bear Lake, Minn.; her brother Bud (Elin) Dunlap of Harris, Minn.; her sister-in-law Lorraine; nieces and nephews in the St. Paul area; and nephews and dear nieces Karen Romano and Luanne McCorison of Duluth, to whom she was "Auntie Irish."

She leaves behind many loving friends who meant so much to her. Irish was fun-loving, generous, kind, honest, open-hearted and a "real" person with no pretenses about her; she loved everyone. Her ready smile, quick wit and marvelous sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her and everyone who loved her. She will be especially and sorely missed by her closest friend, Lucy Kubiak.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with rosary at 7 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. Burial at noon Saturday in St. Michael's cemetery, Prior Lake.

Ethel A. Wright
Ethel A. Wright, 82, of West College Street died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
She was born in Seattle on Sept. 9, 1918, to Alfred and Helen (Dahl) Leik. Ethel was raised in Seattle, was a resident of Norcross, Ga., and longtime resident of the San Francisco area before moving to Duluth two years ago.

Mrs. Wright had a longtime career as an executive secretary with the Navy, U.S. Postal Service and other private industries.

In 1955, Ethel married Keith Wright in Reno, Nev. Ethel was a devoted wife and mother who traveled extensively during her early career, living in Alaska, Guam, Paris and Germany.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John Henry "Jack" Leik.

Survivors include her husband, Keith of Duluth; daughters Helen Wright of Lake County, Minn., and Carolyn Wright (Marc Bosc) of New York City.
Visitation: 2:30 until the 3:30 p.m. service today in Forest Hill cemetery Chapel, the Rev. W. Paul Smith officiating. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the American Red Cross or Animal Allies Humane Society. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth.

Robert "Papa Bob" Tomlin
Robert "Papa Bob" Tomlin, 61, of Hutchinson Road died unexpectedly Friday, May 4, 2001, in his home.
He was born March 28, 1940, in Duluth to Thomas and Gladys (Bellanger) Tomlin.

He married Gloria Floodstrom on March 4, 1961, in Salem Lutheran Church in Hermantown. He worked for Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Co. and for the city of Duluth. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. Those who knew him were blessed by his good sense of humor, his zest for life and his love of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Dolores Tomlin.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Gloria; children Dave (Shellie) of Saginaw, Annette Thomas of Duluth, Kevin (Rhonda) of Hermantown and Donna (Mark) Thorsten of Duluth; brothers Clayton and Kay Tomlin of Duluth, and Lyle (Ruth) Tomlin of Grizzly Falls, Calif.; grandchildren Julie, Jodi and Joseph Thomas, Jon and Jessica Tomlin, and Skylar and Paige Tomlin; his loyal companion, Lucky, and two grand dogs, Shadow and Libby Thorsten.

"He will be greatly missed. His spirit lives on within us."
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday and from noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday, all in Salem Lutheran Church, Hermantown. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Glenn W. Burke
Glenn W. Burke, 83, formerly of Kenwood, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born July 28, 1917, to William and Ebba Burke in Duluth, was a lifelong Duluth area resident and was a 35-year resident of Homecroft. Glenn graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1935 and obtained his Associate of Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He was a charter member, the first president, and later the secretary and fire marshall of the Rice Lake Township Volunteer Fire Firefighters. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America, was awarded the Silver Scout, for recognition of his 32 years of service during which he held various offices in Troop 7, including organizing and was the first Cubmaster of Pack 7 in Homecroft. Glenn was also a past president of the Arrowhead Amateur Radio Club and was a Junior Achievement adviser.

Glenn enjoyed the family cabin on Island Lake, sailing on Lake Superior, spending winters in Florida and storytelling. Glenn served in the Navy Sea bees and the Army in World War II, with time in Hawaii and Guam. He retired in 1979 as an engineering services engineer after 24 1/2 years with the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railroad.

He is survived by his wife, Adele; a daughter, Linda (David) Spears of Duluth; sons Lyle (Nancy) of Proctor; Loren (Lisa) of Atlanta, Lane of St. Paul; and Lee of Duluth; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. May 19 in Fred Olson Mortuary, 2110 W. First St. Memorials may be directed to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Arrangements by Fred Olson Mortuary.
