Marian (Carlson) Kalevik
Marian (Carlson) Kalevik, 73, of Denver died Wednesday, May 2, 2001.
She was born July 10, 1927, in Duluth and graduated from Duluth Central High School. She loved ice and roller skating. She was united in marriage to O. A. "Kal" Kalevik June 4, 1949. Marian became the executive director of a profit-sharing plan for Fuller & Co.

She is survived by her husband, "Kal" and a son, Scott Kalevik, both of Denver; her twin sister, Marjorie Nelson of Duluth; and a brother, Edward Carlson of Chicago.
Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Monday in Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3201 S. Parker Rd., Aurora, Colo. Memorials preferred to the Alzheimer's Association, Rocky Mountain Chapter, 789 Sherman St., (Suite 500), Denver, CO 80203.

Elsa S. Alaspa
Elsa S. Alaspa, 81, of St. Louis Avenue died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in Duluth.
Born Nov. 6, 1919, near Annandale, Minn., she was the daughter of Jacob and Lydia Lahti. She graduated from Minneapolis West High School and was a 1945 graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor's degree in art.

A resident of Duluth since 1946, she enjoyed drawing, painting, knitting and braiding rugs. She participated in the PTA at Congdon Park Elementary and Ordean Junior High Schools and sang in the choir at First Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, J. Howard Alaspa of Duluth; sons Mark of Duluth and Kevin of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; and other relatives.
At Elsa's request, no service. Private interment in Hillcrest cemetery, Cloquet. Arrangements by Jarvi-Dowd Funeral Home, Duluth.

Gertrude Prybelski
Gertrude Prybelski, 98, of West Fifth Street died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in the Franciscan Health Center, Park Point.
Gertrude was born Feb. 19, 1903, in Superior to Michael and Magdalena Prybelski. She was a graduate of Superior Business College. Her career began as a secretary at the law firm of Cadigan and Cadigan in Superior and moved on to the Douglas County district attorney's office. She was promoted to Deputy of Circuit Court for the state of Wisconsin and finally to Clerk of Court of Douglas County until retiring in 1967. Gertrude moved to Duluth in 1968.

She was a member of St. James Church and its St. Margaret's Guild. She was also a member of the Order of Lady Foresters and the Young Republicans of Duluth.

Gertrude was preceded in death by brothers and sisters Mary Adamiak, Frances Blasack, Ann Thomas, Agnes Neuman, Betty, Esther, Josephine, John and Stanley Prybelski; and her niece, Eleanor, and Eleanor's husband, Don Johnson.

Gertrude is survived by nieces and nephews John (Mary Ann) Blasack, Donald (Florence) Thomas and Mae (Don) Wicklund, all of Duluth, Carol (Don) Mlodzik, Joan (Don) Ritchie, Anne (Terrence) Anderson, Grace Adamiak and James Adamiak, all of California, Dorothy (Joe) Jaret of Florida and Louann Rule of Boulder, Colo. Auntie Gertie's independence and individuality will be missed by all.
Visitation begins with a 10 a.m. rosary Monday in St. James Church and continues until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Memorials to St. James Church. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.

Centenarian

Anna June Kampf Beron, 100, of Rice Lake Rd., formerly of Proctor, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health Care Center.

She was born in Lampson, Wis., on June 1, 1900, to Carl "Charles" and Sophia (Reimers) Pischel and was raised on the family farm until she came to Duluth at age 18. She worked as a waitress at the old Spalding and Holland Hotels and the Duluth Athletic Club, retiring in 1959. She was a former member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor and St. James Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; four sisters; her husbands, John Kampf in 1940 and Raymond Beron, Sr., in 1982; her granddaughter, Judith Kampf in 1971; her grandsons, Gary Kampf in 1977 and Mark Chase in 1978; her great-granddaughter, Alison Kampf in 1989; and her stepson, Raymond Beron in 1990.

She is survived by her daughter, Lois (Raymond) Leischke of Duluth; her son, John (Loretta) Kampf of Billings, Mont.; grandsons, Gregory Haynes of Hermantown and John Kampf of Bozeman, Mont.; stepchildren Giles (Joan) Beron of Arizona, Richard (Judy) Beron of Proctor, Rita (Donald) Myntti of Duluth; step daughter-in-law Lois (Raymond) Beron; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, 16 step grandchildren; 32 step great-grandchildren; one niece and four nephews.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, the Rev. Father Charles Flynn officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925. E. Fourth St.

Florence Elizabeth Wilkins
Florence Elizabeth Wilkins, 79, of West Fourth Street died Friday, May 18, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Florence was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Superior to Ralph and Elizabeth Strader. Her mother died soon after Florence was born, and she then went to live with her adoptive parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Bailey in Milwaukee. After their tragic death in a car accident, Florence returned to Duluth and graduated from Stanbrook Hall at St. Scholastica and then went on to Duluth Business College. Florence was head secretary at Duluth AFL-CIO Central Labor Body and retired in 1987 as a stenographer at St. Louis County Social Services.

Florence was a member of the former Sacred Heart Church and St. Mary Star of the Sea. She had a deep love for cats. She would often take in strays and care for them.

She is survived by her sons, Gene Thompson of Duluth and Warren (Cindi) Wilkins and their sons, Matthew, Andrew and Jake of Plymouth, Minn.
Visitation: 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service Monday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.

Lloyd R. Hanson
Lloyd R. Hanson, 84, of North Robin Avenue passed away Thursday, May 17, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
He was born Dec. 25, 1916, in Plummer, Minn., to Severin and Julia (Jacobson) Hanson. Lloyd had lived in the Duluth area since 1957, moving from Valley City and Thief River Falls. He served in World War II as a Medical Surgical Technician attached to the First Battalion of the 349th Infantry, 88th Division. He received three battle stars including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Lloyd married Lois Lilleoien in a rural church near McVille, N.D., on June 20, 1948. He worked as a department manager in hardware and electrical for Sears Roebuck. Lloyd was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, American Legion, VFW, life member of the Elks, and was a past member of the Sons of Norway. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and fishing.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Agnes, Aagot, Selma and Myrtle.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lois of Duluth; two children, Keith Hanson of Duluth and Julie (David) Bard of Alexandria, Minn.; three grandchildren, David, Beth and Sarah; nine nieces; and 11 nephews.
Visitation: one hour prior to the 1 p.m. service Monday in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 410 N. Arlington Ave., Duluth, the Rev. Charles Henneman officiating. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park cemetery in Hermantown. Service entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.

Wife of former Duluth mayor
Evelyn B. Mork, formerly of Duluth, died Feb. 26, 2001, in San Antonio, Texas, where she lived for the past few years.

She was former director of the Women's Institute of Duluth and a member of the Arena-Auditorium Administration.

She was a graduate of Duluth Central and received a bachelor of arts degree from Duluth State Teachers College. She was a former teacher and also worked for State Department in St. Paul and the Duluth Highway Department, from which she retired. She married Clifford Mork in September 1939, and together they owned and operated Mork Food Supply for many years.

Evelyn was the fourth person to hold the position as director of the Women's Institute of Duluth for nine years, retiring in July of 1978. She served as a member of the Arena-Auditorium Administration Board from July 1, 1970, through June 30, 1976, and served as officer and chairman of the Special Events and Projects Committee on behalf of the Arena-Auditorium and the community. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Business Professional Women and director emeritus of Save Lake Superior Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Clifford Mork, in August 1961, while he was mayor of Duluth.

Evelyn is survived by a sister, Marjorie Sandberg of San Antonio, with whom she made her home; a sister, Virginia Herzing of Harlingen, Texas; a brother, Vern (Pat) Sandberg of Oronoco, Minn.; a nephew, John Herzing, Jr., of Harlingen; and nieces Karen Bless of Oronoco, Gretta Freeman of Alexandria, Va., and Jennifer McCulley of Oakton, Va.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., Duluth. Burial in Union cemetery, Hermantown. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.

Carmen Minotte Reed Strange
Carmen Minotte Reed Strange, 89, of Rapid City, S.D., died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She was born Sept. 22, 1911, in Duluth to Nick and Filomena (Perrella) Minotte. She married Nick Reed in August 1928, and worked with him in their neighborhood grocery store in Duluth. They had two sons, Nick and Ron. For eleven years after Nick's death, she worked as a grocery clerk. On April 30, 1967, she married Michael Strange. After several years in Van Nuys, Calif., and his retirement, they returned to Duluth. In 1981 they moved to Rapid City.

Carmen was a member of Mended Hearts and Blessed Sacrament Parish. She was also a champion cribbage player.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Nick Reed and Michael Strange; her son Nick; sisters Dorothy and Mary; and brothers Tony, Angelo and Mike.

She is survived by her son Ron (Marian) of Rapid City; daughter-in-law Betty Reed of Phoenix; sisters Rose Henjum, Violet Norman, and Geraldine Cuirleo; grandchildren Nick Reed, Patrick Reed, William Reed, Michael Reed and Kathleen Reed; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 4 p.m. until the 7 p.m. Christian Wake service today in Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday in Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Michel Mulloy presiding. Interment in Mt. Calvary cemetery, Rapids City. A memorial has been established in her name to the Black Hills Workshop. Arrangements by Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, Rapid City.

Violet Gustafson Nelson
Violet Gustafson Nelson, 95, formerly of Duluth, passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in Sun City West, Ariz., where she resided for the past four years.
She was born April 1, 1906, in Duluth to Gust and Alma (Johnson) Gustafson. She graduated from Denfeld High School and Gregg Business College of Chicago. She married Einer Nelson June 21, 1934. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, its Tabitha Circle and Quilting Group. She was an original member of the Trios Club and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member and past president of the PTA of Merritt Elementary, West Junior High School and Denfeld High School.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents; her dearest friend and husband, Einer, in 1983; and brothers Alford, Alton, Lloyd and Melvin Gustafson.

She is survived by her children, Marolyn (Larry) Penick of Sun City West, Robert (Jackie) Nelson of Louisville, Ky., Charlot (Dennis) Singleton of Atherton, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Donna Nelson; sister-in-law, Leona Gustafson of Minneapolis; grandchildren Kenneth, Brett and Charlot Johnson, MaryLynn Meyer and Shelly Kunst, and Nelson, Elizabeth and Margaret Singleton; great-grandchildren Brandon Kunst, Jenna Meyer and Kaylor Chesney; and many nieces and nephews.

Vi's warmth, hospitality and sense of humor will be remembered and missed by family and friends.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Bethany Lutheran Church. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.
