Alice W. "Dotie" Mattson
Alice W. "Dotie" Mattson, 86, of Grand Avenue died Friday, May 4, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
She was born in Duluth and lived here and in Midway Township all of her life. She attended Denfeld High School and was a cashier for Denfeld Super Value. She belonged to the West Duluth Women's Club, AARP, Retail Clerks Association, Teamsters Retirees, Faithhaven Association, Order of the Eastern Star-Euclid Chapter 56 and Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church and its Naomi Circle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Alice Thorp; her husband, Carl V., in 1969; a son, Russell; a brother, Willard; a grandson, Timothy Mattson; and a great-grandson, Dylan Dueland.

Surviving are children David C. (Patricia) Mattson of Duluth, Craig V. (Tammy) Mattson of Hastings, and Sandra A. (Bernard) Olson of Culver; brothers Henry (Billie) Thorp and Earl Thorp, both of Duluth, Robert Thorp of Arden Hills, Minn., the Rev. Donald (Betty) Thorp of Fargo, N.D., Richard (Ann) Thorp of Falcon Heights, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday with the Order of Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Service 1 p.m. Tuesday in Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4831 Grand Ave. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Family prefers memorials directed to Our Savior's Memorial Fund. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Katherine Mary Adkins
Katherine Mary Adkins, 76, of Duluth, passed away Friday, May 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
She was born July 8, 1924, to James Sr. and Catherine (O'Connell) Black in Superior. She married Lowell Adkins in August 1943. She was a former member of Gary/New Duluth Community Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; her parents; and her brother, James Black Jr.

She is survived by her children, James (Barbara) Adkins of Duluth, Kathleen (Gene) Van Ert of Superior, and Robert Adkins of Duluth; grandchildren Michael (Tina) Van Ert of Superior, Debbie Adkins of Cloquet, Michele (Joe) Anderson of Superior, and Bryan Adkins of Duluth; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 9 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Foley Chapel, 5404 Ramsey St., Duluth. Burial in Calvary cemetery, Superior.

Josephine Gundstrom
Josephine Gundstrom, 94, of Duluth died Friday, May 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital in Superior.
She was born Jan. 31, 1907, in Duluth. Josephine was a lifetime member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Above all her many life experiences and accomplishments, Josephine was completely devoted to her family. She will be remembered for her generosity, loyalty and strength and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Gundstrom in 1967; a granddaughter, Antoinette "Toni" Owen; sons-in-law Edward Cismoski and Cmdr. James Fischer.

She is survived by a son, Robert R. (Lois) Gundstrom of Duluth; daughters Laura E. Fischer of Eau Claire, Wis., Joan Cismoski of Poplar and Roberta G. Owen of Houston; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Memorials to the Lake Superior Life Care Center, Lakeside Presbyterian Church or the donor's choice. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Sister Mary James Murphy, OSB
Sister Mary James Murphy, OSB, 89, of St. Scholastica Monastery died Friday, May 4, 2001, in the Benedictine Health Center.
Sister Mary James entered the Duluth Benedictine community in 1933 and professed monastic vows in 1935. She was born in Superior April 27, 1912. She completed her elementary and secondary education at the Claude Allouez Academy in Superior. After high school graduation, she enrolled at Stout Institute in Menomonie, Wis., to pursue a degree in home economics. One year later, she transferred to the College of St. Scholastica where she completed a B.S. degree in English with a minor in home economics. During her first year at the college, she was drawn to the religious life and made plans to join the Benedictine Order.

Most of her years of active ministry Sister Mary James spent teaching elementary school. She had the experience of teaching all grades except seventh but spent most of her years with first graders. Her teaching assignments included St. Francis School, Brainerd, Minn.; St. Gertrude's School, Washington, D.C.; St. Rose School, Proctor; St. John's School, Duluth; Our Mother of Sorrows School, Cincinnati, Ohio; St. Thomas the Apostle School, Phoenix; and St. Joseph's School, Grand Rapids. She served as principal and convent superior in Brainerd and Grand Rapids and as convent superior in Phoenix. Sister Mary James was assigned to the Monastery on two different occasions. Once she worked in the office of the director of temporalities and once in the ministry of hospitality at the information desk. Sister retired in 1995 and returned to the Monastery.

Sister Mary James was the only child of William and Katherine (Murphy) Murphy. Her parents preceded her in death.

She is survived by the sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery and by cousins and other relatives.
A wake service begins at 7 p.m. Monday in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, St. Scholastica Monastery. Visitation follows until 9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, also in the chapel, the Rev. Blane Wasnie, OSB, as presider. Interment in Gethsemane cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Scholastica Monastery.

Roy Bergstedt
Roy Bergstedt, 84, formerly of Duluth died peacefully Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Fort Myers, Fla.
He was born in International Falls to Esther and Hugo Bergstedt, one of nine children. Roy served his country during World War II in the Sea-bees branch of the Navy and retired after 24 years as senior master chief. He was a building contractor in Duluth and, along with his wife, owned the London House restaurant in Duluth. Roy was a self-taught ski-jumper, known as "the Flying Angel." His one ski-jumping act became the opening spectacle for many local ski tournaments. He was also instrumental in development of the Lakeview Ski Chalet.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella; sons Roger (Jocelyn) of Millersburg, Mich., and David (Lynn) of Superior; and four grandchildren.
Services were held in Fort Myers May 3.

Edward H. Nolte
Edward H. Nolte, 74, of Lillian, Ala., formerly of Duluth passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2001.
Ed was born in St. Petersburg, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Delores "Dee" Nolte of Lillian; a son, James Nolte of Glenallen, Alaska; a daughter, Janet and son-in-law, Scott Sorochak and grandson, Kevin Sorochak, all of Duluth.
Interment in Forest Hill cemetery in Duluth at a later date. Arrangements by Milton Funeral Home of Pensacola, Fla.

Stanley E. Kriske
Stanley E. Kriske, 76, of Leawood, Kan., formerly of Duluth died Thursday, May 3, 2001, in Kansas.
Stanley was born Feb. 22, 1925, in Gnesen Township to John and Agnes (Musolf) Krzeszewski.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and receiving a Purple Heart. Stanley retired after 29 years as a vice president with Ben Franklin and then went to work for Brooks Brothers for 10 years, retiring in 1992. He moved to Kansas in 1973. While in Duluth, Stanley was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Gnesen. He was a member of Cure of Ars Catholic Church in Leawood.

Stanley was preceded in death by brothers John, Mike, Tony, Bill, Adam and Ted; sisters Mary Hantz, Florence Johnson and Julia Stanley.

He is survived by his wife, Anne (Krmpotich) Kriske of Leawood; children Mary Anne Schwartz of Overland Park, Kan., George of Overland, Kan., Kenneth of Leawood, Timothy of Plano, Texas, and Christie Glasgow of Lenexa, Kan.; grandchildren Kenneth J., David, Sam, Catherine, John, Joe and Connor; a sister, Lucille Hannu of Anoka, Minn.
Visitation: 3-6 p.m. today with 5 p.m. wake prayer service in Dougherty Funeral Home. Service 11 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Church, Gnesen. Burial in St. Joseph's cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.

Walter L. Swanson
Walter L. Swanson, 82, of Robinson Street passed away Thursday, May 3, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice after a brief illness.
Walt was born Nov. 26, 1918, in Brimson to Charles and Edith Olson Swanson. He worked as an accountant with the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 41 years retiring in 1979. Walt also served in the Fifth Armored Division during World War II in Europe.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice (Helgeton); his parents; a brother; and three sisters.

Walt is survived by his wife, Dolores; sons Dale (Phyllis) of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Donald (Patricia) of Elk River, Minn.; a sister, Myrtle Erickson of Eveleth; a brother, Robert Swanson of Duluth; grandchildren Keni, Kyle and Hannah.

Walt was a kind, caring and generous man and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Memorials to St. Michael's Lakeside School or St. Mary's Hospice. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Agnes Jean Pevach
Agnes Jean Pevach, 83, of Duluth died unexpectedly Friday, May 4, 2001.
She was born June 29, 1917, in Mountain Iron and came to Duluth in her early 20s. For many years she worked for Otis-Magie Gustafson Insurance Agency in Duluth. She first lived at the YWCA when she came to Duluth and later supported it. She was also active in the Duluth Playhouse. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Maria Pjarach; brothers Daniel, Nicholas and Robert; and a sister, Sophie.

She is survived by nieces Carol Scinocca and Debbie Kirby; nephews Fred (Karin) Cummings and Danny Pevach; sisters-in-law Dorothy Pevach and Ellen Pevach; numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Memorial service and committal: 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1710 E. Superior St., the Rev. M. Lucie Thomas officiating. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota. Memorials preferred to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the YWCA.
