EDWARD J. STEIN
Edward J. Stein, 94, of Otsego Street died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
Edward was born Oct. 2, 1907, in Duluth to Jacob and Delia (Thouin) Stein. He served in the Naval Reserves on the USS Puducah for six years in the 1930s. Edward married Dorothy C. Jones on June 1, 1939. He retired in 1972, after 42 years as a printer at the Duluth Herald and News Tribune.

He was a member of St. Michael's Church and a 60-year life member of its Knights of Columbus, a member of the Serendipity Club, Duluth Power Squadron, and a life member of the International Typographical Union. Edward enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, woodworking, golfing (well into his 80s), and he was an avid reader right up to his death.

His son, Richard F. Stein in 1996; sister Patricia Luther; and a brother, R.C. "Clem" Stein, preceded Edward in death.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son Robert (Mary) Stein of Long Prairie, Minn.; daughter Mary (Rev. John) Stein-Husband of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; grandchildren Patty Sunde, Richard Stein, Jonathan Stein, Katrina Stenton, Christopher Stein, Kendra Schleiker, Caroline Date and Paul Date; and great-grandchildren Eric, Christopher and Abigail Stein, and Tyler Schleiker.
VISITATION: 4 p.m. Wednesday with 6:30 p.m. wake prayers in Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation continues from 11 a.m. until the noon service Thursday in St. Michael's Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, (218) 727-3555.

ROY S. PATTERSON
Roy S. Patterson, 86, of Faith Haven died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
He was born June 22, 1915, in Duluth to Edward and Ovedia Patterson. Roy was a lifelong Duluth resident. He worked as parts manager for the former Monson Dodge Chrysler dealership for many years and then was an employee for Duluth public schools for many years until retirement in 1976. He was a 1934 graduate of Denfeld High School and had attended the University of Minnesota--Minneapolis. Roy married Ruby A. Carlsness on March 3, 1942, in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Duluth.

Roy was a member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church, its Mens Club and had been a scout master for Boy Scout Troop 49. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending winters in Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby on Feb. 3, 1996; and a brother, Edward.

Survivors include his sons, Jeff (Sandy) of Tehachapi, Calif., and Art "Curly" (Kathy) of Austin, Texas; a brother, Gordon (Mary) of McGregor; and grandchildren Jaclyn (Dale) Peterson of St. Paul, Linae Patterson of Minneapolis, Shawna (Ron) Buchsen of England and Sara Howard of Lancaster, Calif.
VISITATION: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Wednesday in Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4831 Grand Ave., Pastor John K. Hanson officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Military honors accorded by Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Memorials to Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church Foundation Fund would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., (218) 624-5745.

MARGARET MARY MCQUADE
Margaret Mary McQuade, 75, of Thornton, Colo., died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001.
Mrs. McQuade was born in Duluth to William and Mable Harkness on June 3, 1926. She graduated from Duluth Cathedral and worked at the Glass Block store, North West Bell Telephone Company and 3M Company. She married Thomas McQuade in 1946. They were a military family and lived in many places before settling in Colorado. Margaret was a homemaker who was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; great-aunt Lillian McGregor; brothers George and John; and a son, Thomas.

Survivors include her daughters, Dianne Hillman, Margaret McQuade and Mary Durben; sons Robert, Michael, James and Scott; a sister, Virginia (Robert) Johnson of Esko; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and former husband Tom McQuade.
SERVICES were held Nov. 19, 2001, in Thornton.

ELSIE W. KANE
Elsie W. Kane, 91, of St. Paul, a former Duluth resident, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, in United Hospital, St. Paul.
She was born Jan. 4, 1910, in Duluth to Morris J. and Sarah (Kaner) Widdes. Elsie was a Duluth resident for most of her life, living in St. Paul for the past 25 years. She was a graduate of Duluth Central High School and Anchor Hospital School of Nursing, St. Paul. Elsie was a member of Temple Israel, Temple of Aaron, St. Paul, was a life member of Hadassah and had volunteered at Sholom Home, St. Paul.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Philip Kane; a sister, Bessie Cowan; a brother, Ted Widdes; and son-in-law Joe Weinstein.

Survivors include her daughters, Gretchen Kane Weinstein of Greenbrae, Calif., and Ann Kane (Barry) Saliman of Denver; a son, Joseph Michael (Arlene) Kane of Foster City, Calif.; a brother, Getchell (Helen) Widdes of Duluth; a sister, Ossie Perlman of St. Paul; grandchildren Tamara (Kenneth) Ruterbories, and Alisa and Steve Saliman; and a great-grandson, Ethan Ruterbories.
GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Tifereth Israel cemetery, Duluth. If so desired, memorials may be directed to Temple Israel, Temple of Aaron Food Bank, St. Paul or Sholom Home Auxiliary. Arrangements by Bell Brother Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

NANCY LOUISE (HOFFMAN) FISHER
Nancy Louise (Hoffman) Fisher went to be with Our Lord on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice in Duluth, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Dec. 4, 1939, the daughter of Charles and Emma (Allen) Hoffman in Ironwood. Nancy spent her childhood in Mercer, Wis. In 1952, the family moved to Hurley, where she graduated from J.E. Murphy High School with honors. She attended St. Mary's School of Nursing, Duluth, graduating with honors in 1960. In 1981, Nancy received her bachelor's degree in nursing from the College of St. Scholastica, graduating cum laude. She worked as a registered nurse in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics in Duluth, Big Fork and Grand Marais, Minn. She also was office manager and bookkeeper for North Shore Forest Products Inc., in Grand Marais for 15 years. Nancy was a public health nurse for St. Louis County in Duluth for 14 years before her retirement.

Nancy enjoyed gardening, cooking, music and the arts. She wrote poetry under the pen name of Auna. She especially enjoyed children and animals, being survived by her beloved German shepherd, Rubin. Nancy loved all outdoor activities, skiing, camping, fishing and snowmobiling, especially in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Charles Hoffman.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Heidi L. (Bill) Mlynarczyk of Duluth; son Bryon A. (Michele Schneider and Ashton) Fisher of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; grandsons Andrew Jeffrey (Fisher) Archer and Bryce Evan Mlynarczyk; sister Patricia J. (August) Applekamp of Ironwood, and North Fort Myers, Fla.; also surviving are special friends, "her girls", Janine (John) Davey of Duluth and Martha (Doug) Erstad of Milford, Mich., and their children; and many cousins with special support from Beverly (Brian) Tousignant and Wayne (Shirley) Allen, both of Ironwood.
A CELEBRATION OF NANCY'S LIFEwill be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave., Chaplain Michelle Robbie officiating. Services will also be held in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ironwood, time to be announced later. Private burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes or a church of your choice in Nancy's name.

RUTH E. LENT
Centenarian
Ruth E. Lent, 101, of Duluth passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, in the Benedictine Health Center.
Born Nov. 4, 1900, to James and Eliza Jane Lent in Duluth, she was a longtime resident of the West End and, more recently, St. Ann's Residence. She worked for 42 years at Northern National Bank, now US Bank, as a stenographer in the Trust Department, retiring in 1965.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clifford; sisters Edith Lent and Marion Olson.

She is survived by nieces Joyce Pyburn of Los Alamos, N.M., Hope Johnson and Gayle Rodenwald of Duluth; and a nephew, Richard Olson of Minneapolis; and special friend, Joanne Carlson of Hermantown.
VISITATION: 11 a.m. until the noon service Tuesday in Johnson Mortuary. Private interment in Oneota cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to donor's choice. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

SADIE HELEN BISMARK
Sadie Helen Bismark, 98, of North 10th Avenue East died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, in Benedictine Health Center.
Sadie was born in Virginia to John and Elizabeth Hautala. She attended school in Buhl and Kinney. She lived in Duluth since 1956.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; sister Erma McPencow; brothers Paul, Fred and Wilfred; and a son, William Peltonen.

Survivors include her sons, Robert Peltonen of Duluth and Richard Peltonen of Florence, Wis.; grandchildren Paul and Richard Peltonen, Cindy Owens and Theresa (Peter) Kligus; and great-grandchildren Leanna, Gabriel, Anthony, Michael and Cynthia.
NO SERVICES will be held. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

ALFRED F. GREGORICH
Alfred F. Gregorich, 92, resident of Lake Haven Manor died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
Alfred was born Aug. 2, 1909, in Calumet, Mich., to Thomas and Mary (Rickel) Gregorich, and had lived in Duluth since childhood. He was an overhead crane operator for US Steel Corporation until his retirement.

His parents and three brothers preceded him in death.

Alfred is survived by his brother, George (Lavone) Gregorich of Duluth; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
NO VISITATION OR SERVICESare scheduled. Private inurnment will take place at a later date in Calvary cemetery, Duluth. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St., Duluth, (218) 624-4838.

DENNIS M. JOHNSON
Dennis M. Johnson, 56, of Hagberg Street died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, in Lake Haven Nursing Home, after a brief illness.
He was born in Superior and lived in Duluth all of his life. Dennis was a youth counselor and had served as director of the Upward Bound Program at the University of Minnesota Duluth, which later moved to the College of St. Scholastica. He had also worked at Bethany Children's Home and Woodland Hills.

Dennis was loved by many friends and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy; a daughter, Nicci; a son, Ben; his mother, Leona Johnson of Duluth; brothers Don (Mary), Larry (Laurie), Roger (Cindy) and Steve (Bonnie) Johnson, all of Duluth; his cousin, Barbara (Mike) Bishop of Houston; four foster sons; and 19 nieces and nephews.
