NANCY (AEBLI) COKER
Nancy (Aebli) Coker, 54, of Birmingham, Ala., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer. Nancy passed away peacefully in the home of her sister, Joanne Humphrey, in Apple Valley, Minn.
Nancy grew up in Duluth and moved to Alabama 25 years ago. She was a pharmacy technician at Crestline Pharmacy in Birmingham for more than 20 years. She is sadly missed by her Crestline "family" of owners, fellow employees and customers.

Nancy loved her life in Birmingham and accepted people as they were.

She was preceded in death by her father, Rudolph Aebli; her mother, Thelma Frame; her stepfather, Don Frame; and a niece, Brenda Johnson.

She is sadly missed by sisters Joanne (Gary) Humphrey of Apple Valley, Patricia Johnson of International Falls, Martha Weiskerchen of Seattle and Sharon (Dan) Engelke of Saginaw, Mich.; brothers Bob (Pam) Aebli of Superior and William Frame of West Palm Beach, Fla.; nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Nancy will be interred with her mother and other family members in Deer River.

Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society, Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, Rochester, Minn., or Fairview Hospice, Minneapolis, Minn.

ANGELA ZELEZNIKAR MANTEL
Angela Zeleznikar Mantel of Mount Royal Pines 1 passed away on Monday, Dec. 3, 2001.
Although she called Duluth home, she was born in Ely to Joseph and Johanna Glinsek Zeleznikar. She married John J. Mantel, son of Joseph and Mary Majerle Mantel of Ely.

Angela was a graduate of Duluth Central High School. She retired as a clerk from the Duluth Water and Gas Company. Angie was active in the St. John's Rosary Society, AARP 926, Ladies Auxiliary VFW 137 and MAPERA 96. She was a charter member of the Inspirations Senior Dance Line.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters Jennie Forneris and Mary Bachar; and a brother, Frank.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean (Carl) Stueland and family; brothers Joe, Jack, Walter, Robert and John; and sisters Molly Trano and Frances Kosanovich.

A special thank you is sent to family, friends, Dr. Sande and the St. Luke's Hospice team who supported her and comforted her during her illness. Angie was a wife, mother, and friend and will be greatly missed by everyone she touched. She was a woman of great courage and had a deep faith in God. She asked that people keep her in their hearts and remember her in prayer.
ROSARY SERVICE: 11 until the 11:30 a.m. memorial service Saturday in St. John's Church, 430 St. John's Ave., Woodland, Duluth. Burial in Calvary cemetery, Duluth. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials, which will be donated to the hospice.

EARL HOWARD RUBLE
Earl Howard Ruble died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point health-care facility.
Earl was born Jan. 31, 1911, in Willmar, Minn., to Edwin C. and Edith J. (Sjoberg) Ruble. He grew up in Driscoll, N.D., and Minneapolis. As a Boy Scout, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout and won the Harmon Award College Scholarship in 1924.

He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1933 and his master's degree in chemical engineering from the U of M in 1937.

Earl married Audrey G. Peck on Dec. 18, 1937.

He was a junior sanitary engineer with the Minnesota Department of Health during the investigation of a typhoid epidemic in 1936-37. In January 1938, he began work as the demonstration sanitary engineer for the city of Duluth. He was instrumental in establishing pasteurization of milk and the fluoridation of the water supply in Duluth. He also pioneered a treatment process to eliminate water-borne typhoid in the Duluth water supply.

Earl was commissioned in the Army on Dec. 3, 1941, and served until November 1945, commanding and instructing anti-aircraft gunners and attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was awarded the Army Commendation medal.

In 1956, he established the consulting engineering firm, Earl Ruble and Associates, which over the next 30 years grew to include engineering, architecture, chemistry, geology, geophysics and was always involved with water quality control in Duluth and many communities in northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In 1965, Earl served as president of the Minnesota Public Health Association.

He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, serving on many boards, including the building committee of the current church. Earl was an avid outdoorsman and spent many hours sailing Lake Superior on his boat, the Audrey Grace II.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 58 years, Audrey, on Feb. 1, 1996; his brother, Kenneth Ruble; and a son-in-law, Carl Cunningham, in October 1999.

He is survived by his children, Carol Cunningham of Oronoco, Minn., and David (Patricia) Ruble of Duluth; nephews Ken Jr. (Carolyn) Ruble and Don Ruble, both of Minneapolis; grandchildren Dianne (Paul) Shober, Carrie (Kary) Schweiger, Shannon (Rodney) Caldwell, Reagan Cunningham and Lee Cunningham; and six great-grandchildren.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 1 p.m. Sunday in Peace United Church of Christ, 1015 E. 11th St., Duluth. The family requests memorials to the church building fund. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

LUDVIG MORTENSON KROKUM
Ludvig Mortenson Krokum, 97, of London Road, formerly of North Second Avenue, Proctor, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
He was born in Hungdorf, Norway, on May 3, 1904, and moved to Proctor in 1923. Ludvig married Signe Klara Lerdahl in July 1928, and together they made their home on Vinland Street. Ludvig was a foreman in the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway's Mechanical Department. Upon his retirement, the Krokums lived in Minneapolis and Florida, returning to Proctor in the early 1980s.

Ludvig was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, DM&IR; Veterans Association, Euclid Lodge, Scottish Rite, AARP and a life member of the Sons of Norway.

He was preceded in death by four siblings; and his wife, Signe, on May 23, 2000.

Survivors include his son, Rodney (Audrey) of Cincinnati; grandchildren Candy (John) Ploetz of California, Scott (Kathy) Krokum of Duluth, and Lee (Tanya Triplett) Krokum and Lucy (Richard Hastings) Krokum, both of Minneapolis; and great-grandchildren Nicholas, Ryan, Jacob, Jennifer, Kerry, Alex and Travis.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Saturday in Bell Brothers Chapel, the Rev. Jeffrey Holter officiating. Memorials preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

ALDEN E. LIND
Environmental activist
Alden E. Lind, 66, of Duluth died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in his home under the care of his family and St. Mary's Hospice.

Alden was born March 24, 1935, to Iona and John Lind in Duluth. He was a graduate of Two Harbors High School, Reed College in Portland, Ore., and received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, Eugene. He was united in marriage to Ora Jane Cone on Aug. 24, 1959, in Silver Bay. Alden taught political science at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and at the University of Wisconsin, Superior. He was also involved for many years in the running of his family's resort, Twin Points, near Split Rock River.

Alden's passion in life was to improve working conditions for the overworked and underpaid; to promote the cause of integration in the South; and teaming with other environmentalists locally and nationally to preserve air and water quality of our fragile planet.

He was a member of Save Lake Superior Association, Lake Superior Bi-national Forum, IJC; Great Lakes United, Isaac Walton League, National Parks and Conservation Association, Park and Trails Council of Minnesota, Lake Superior Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Duluth, and the Shrine.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ora; son Thomas; and grandson Christopher John Lind, all of Duluth; sister Arlene (George Avis) Lehto of Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
At Alden's request: there will be no funeral, but rather a Celebration of Life picnic next summer on the shore of Lake Superior. Alden requested memorials to the Save Lake Superior Association, P.O. Box 101, Two Harbors, MN 55616. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.

RUTH A. MYERS
Grandmother of Indian education
in Minnesota
Ruth A. Myers, 75, of Duluth walked on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.

Ruth, was born to William and Julia (Quodonce) Shughart on Jan. 14, 1926, in Chippewa City-Grand Marais. Ruth was an enrolled member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. She attended Duluth schools and left school in the 11th grade to work in a military factory in Oklahoma during World War II.

Ruth was elected and appointed to many prominent boards and committees. Some of her noteworthy accomplishments include: first American Indian to serve on the Duluth School Board; appointed to State Board of Education by Gov. Anderson and served 16 years, three years as president; adviser to the Quality of Education Minorities Network; member of the National Association of State University and Land-Grant Colleges; appointed by President Carter to the National Indian Task Force Office of Civil Rights; appointed by Gov. Perpich to the Minnesota Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution, and to the development Task Force on Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College; founding member of the American Indian Fellowship Association; a founding member of the Bizindun, the American Indian Alternative School; and a founding member of the Duluth Indian Action Council.

Ruth began her career in education as a consultant. She began working for the Minnesota Department of Education as a counselor in 1971, and later as a regional coordinator. In 1979, she became co-director of American Indian Programs, currently known as the Center of American Indian & Minority Health, at the UMD School of Medicine. Ruth retired from the university in 1994.

Because of Ruth's commitment to Indian education she received many accolades and awards. At the 1994 UMD commencement ceremony, she was awarded an honorary degree, doctor of humane letters, honoris causa, recognizing her "distinctive achievements, which added materially to knowledge and the betterment of society." The Ruth A. Myers Endowed Chair of Indian Education was established at UMD to continue her life's work. One of the Edison academies at the Raleigh site is named the Ruth Myers House in special commemoration for her commitment to education of Duluth's children. To recognize Ruth's contributions in founding of the Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College, the board of directors named the school library in her honor.

Ruth was first married to Gilbert Schumacher, then married Millard E. Myers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Millard E.; sisters Louise Burnett and Evelyn Clarke; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Shughart.

Ruth is survived by her children, William (Sue) of Grand Portage; Ruthe Anne (Dennis) Peterson of Fairbanks, Alaska; Barbara Myers (Clayton Hollinday) and Millard "Sonny" (Yvonne) of Duluth; brothers Arthur and William Shughart of Duluth; and sisters Rosie (Walter ) Wysoczynski of New London, Conn., and Florence (Bruce) Cooper of Leesburg, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Fredrick Clarke; granddaughters Tracey Myers, Kristen Conley, Terri Barela, Brenda Doggett, and Stephanie and Jamie Myers; five great-grandchildren; and several special nieces and nephews.
PUBLIC VISITATION: 5-8 p.m. today and continues from 9-11 a.m. Saturday in Crawford Chapel. Memorial gathering and "Celebration of Life" from 1-4 p.m. Saturday in UMD-Kirby Ballroom. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Ruth Myers Gift for Education Fund, P.O. Box 626, Hovland, MN 55606.
