CHARLES JOHN PUCHREITER
Lions Club's 'Mr. Pancake'
Charles John Puchreiter, 79, of Colorado Street died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Charles was born in Kitzville, Minn., to Charles and Frances Zakraisek Puchreiter. Charles served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific, and during that time married
Dorothy Vranish on July 31, 1943, in Crosby. He had been a Duluth resident since 1956. Charles formerly worked as a field representative for Twin Ports Grocery. Charles was very active in the Duluth Lions Club and also was known as "Mr. Pancake." He was a member of the Elks Club 133 where he served as chaplain, American Legion Post 71 and was a former member of the board of directors of the Salvation Army.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a brother, Roger of St. Paul; sisters Frances Morison of Brookfield, Ill., and Marion Hogquist of Sartell, Minn.
VISITATION: from 5 p.m. Friday with wake prayers at 7 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. Service at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Memorials preferred to the American Cancer Society or Lighthouse for the Blind.
EDWARD DONALD SCHULZE
Edward Donald Schulze, 67, of Colorado Street died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001.
He was born in St. Paul on Oct. 22, 1934, to Henry A. and Mary (Paddock) Schulze. Edward was raised in St. Paul and graduated from Mechanic Arts High School and Dunwoody Institute. He and his family moved to Duluth in 1966. Edward worked for Minnesota Power for two years and Water and Gas Engineers until retiring in 1996. He was an avid golfer, bowler and belonged to the Elks Club 133. Edward was active in Cub Scouts, Little League and youth hockey. He was a loving husband and father.
Edward was preceded in death by his father and mother; brother Henry Jr.; and sisters Marie Sundvall, Elaine Clayton and Gloria Schulze.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; sons Edward P. (Joan Olson) of Duluth and Mark (Dawn) of Dillingham, Alaska; daughters Mary Kay (Bill) Bunting and Karen (Dave) Paul, both of Duluth; grandchildren Rachael (Laren) Hagan of Texas, Marc of Alaska, and Melissa, Ashley, Jessica and Jamie, all of Duluth; his siblings, William (Joyce) and Robert Schulze, Lois (William) Kealy, Carol Chute and Sharon (John) Larson, all of St. Paul, Joyce Dalton of Cass Lake and Doris (Jerry) Wood of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister-in-law Judith (Dr. Sam) McHutchison; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his wife's family.

DOLORES E. GORNICK
Dolores E. Gornick, 55, of Bloomington, Minn., died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001.
She was a counselor at Shakopee High School and a psychologist.
Dolores was preceded in death by her father, Charles N. Starcevich.
She is survived by children Timothy James and Thomas John; a grandson, Fletcher Michael; her mother, Thana (John J.) Lopac; and James Gornick.
VISITATION: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial today in Edward Catholic Church, 9401 Nesbitt Ave. S., Bloomington. Interment in Dawn Valley cemetery. Arrangements by Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, (952) 920-3996.
AHTI J. RUUSKANEN
Ahti J. Ruuskanen, 73, of Duluth ended his earthly journey Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born in Ilmajoki, Finland, on May 26, 1928, to parents Israel and Maria Laine Ruuskanen. Ahti served in the Finnish Merchant Marine before coming to the United States in 1947. He was drafted into the Army on Jan. 15, 1951, and served through the Korean War with the 7th Infantry Division, 17th Regiment. He became a naturalized citizen Dec. 6, 1955. Ahti married
Esther Valentine Peterson on Jan. 26, 1962. He became father to Ross and Marcy Peterson, and in 1966, had a son, David.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Onni; twin brother, Atto; a sister, Kerttu; and a granddaughter, Tara Jo Kriske Ruuskanen.
He is survived by his wife, Esther M.; sons Ross Peterson of Powell, Wyo., and David Ruuskanen of Duluth; a daughter, Marcy Peterson of Duluth; brothers Aulis and Alpo (Irja), all of Finland; a sister, Aino Solanen of Finland; grandchildren Destiny, Rachel, Greg, Amy, Donny, Eric, Tim, Tasha, Kaylee and Alyssa; five great-grandchildren; special family friend, Delores Blair; and many friends and relatives.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 1 p.m. Friday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home, Inurnment in Forest Hill cemetery.
ROSEMARY ALICE ADAMS HACKETT
Rosemary Alice Adams Hackett, 84, of Duluth died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
She was born in Duluth on Feb. 27, 1917, to Royal and Margaret (Sullivan) Adams. She attended St. James School and graduated from Denfeld High School in 1934. She was one of the oldest lifelong members of St. James Church and was a member of the St. Margaret's Guild, and a member of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She worked for Wahl's Department Store as a fabric clerk, retiring in 1981. She was a past president of the Spirit Valley Senior Citizen Club and had been an active member of the reunion committee for the Denfeld Class of 1934.
Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Archie Hackett, in 1973; and her sister, Kathryn McKenna, in 1997.
She is survived by sons Jerry (Barb) of Minnetonka Minn., and Dennis J. of Duluth; daughters Janet Schultz (Terry Heyer) of Wahkon, Minn., Diane (Rick) Peterson of St. Paul and Patricia Magariner of Duluth; a sister, Lorraine Langley of Duluth; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

VIRGINIA M. ANDERSON
Virginia M. Anderson, 77, of Grand Avenue died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 12, 1924, in Duluth to Axel and Gunver Anderson. She attended Denfeld High School. She retired as a clerk for Woolworth's after working there for many years. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity and was active in its quilting group. She was very adept at craftwork, and she and her brother, Richard, who made woodcraft objects, participated in many craft shows. She also ran a spun cotton candy concession at these craft shows. She loved to entertain friends, and was a wonderful cook and hostess.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Richard, who died in 1975.
She is survived by several dear friends, including Gloria and Ron Hanson of Eau Claire, Wis., Eileen and James Hepp, Phyllis and Robert DeRocher, and Bernice and Don Nordstrom, all of Duluth, Pam and Scott Lonne of Proctor, and the ladies of her quilting group.
VISITATION: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity.
ETHEL ALBERTA ANDERSON
Ethel Alberta Anderson, 89, of Duluth died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point health care facility.
She was born in Duluth and was a lifelong resident. Ethel graduated from Central High School in 1932 and was self-employed as a seamstress. She was a member and an organist at St. John's Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church, and also was a member of Duluth Chamber of Commerce.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Anderson, in 1984.
She is survived by a daughter, Judy (Conrad) Morriseau of International Falls; a son, William A. (Nellie) Anderson of Duluth; grandchildren Rachael and Lucas; and several nieces and nephews.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Saturday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Interment in Park Hill cemetery.
SCOTT JOSEPH BODELL
Scott Joseph Bodell, 43, of Alpine Drive, Hermantown died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, as the result of a traffic accident.
He was born in Superior on June 21, 1958, to Joseph John and Roberta Diane (Brannan) Bodell, and had been a lifelong Hermantown resident. He was a graduate of Hermantown High School. He worked for Billington Contracting as a truck driver and heavy machine operator. He was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers 49er's. Scott was willing to help anyone and fix anything.
Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents; an infant brother, Jimmy; and his mother, Ann on Aug. 21, 1999.
Survivors include his son, Daniel of Hermantown; his father, Joe of Duluth; brothers Mark (Hazel) of Saginaw, Paul (Mary) of Duluth and Joseph (Denise) of Midway Township; a sister, Nan (Ron) Bodell-Moen of Hermantown; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

STEVEN "STEVE" FLOYD BECK
Steven "Steve" Floyd Beck, a lifelong resident of Rice Lake Township died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001.
Steve was born Feb. 22, 1954, to Walter and Opal Beck. He attended Arnold School, Washington Junior High School and Central High School, graduating in 1972. Steve went on to Lake Superior College, completing an apprenticeship program for electricians and became a journeyman member of Local 242 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in 1976, he received his IBEW 25-year service pin this fall. He worked for Universal Electric, Commercial Electric, Lakehead Electric and Thompson Electric. Recently, he spent much of his time working for Thompson Electric at St. Mary's/Duluth Clinic and University of Minnesota Duluth.
Steve taught in the IBEW apprenticeship program at Lake Superior College for 12 years, served as treasurer for Local 242 of the IBEW for three years, and as a member of the union's Executive Board for four years. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1478, West Duluth.
He married
Elizabeth "Liz" Fall on Sept. 11, 1976. Steve and Liz celebrated their 25th anniversary this fall. Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and gardening, he especially enjoyed bringing in this year's harvest. He was an avid reader who loved Stephen King and science fiction.
Steve is survived by his wife, Liz; son Nicholas; daughter Emily; his father and mother, Walter and Opal (Watson) Beck, all of Duluth; sisters Barbara (Tom Bacig) Perushek of Duluth and Nancy (Mike) Rebar of St. Louis, Mo.; brothers John (Beth) of Minnetonka, Minn., and Tom of Forest Lake, Minn.; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ernie and Florence Strandberg of Carlton. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
After a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer, Steve will rest in the bosom of his Lord, the hearts of his wife, children, family and friends, at Steve's reef on Basswood Lake, and in Pine Grove cemetery in Palisade. We all will miss his gentle, quiet strength and love of life.
VISITATION: 2-2:30 p.m. with a time of remembrance from 2:30 until the 3 p.m. service Thursday in St. John's Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.
BONNIE L. OLSON
Bonnie L. Olson, 51, of Duluth passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born March 25, 1950, in Warroad, Minn., to Oscar and Beulah (Gruchow) Olson. Bonnie worked at Jeno's in the quality control department. She enjoyed spending time with all of her family, especially Bea, Tabbatha and Kristi.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Duane Olson.
She is survived by her son, Scott (fiance Kim Morton) Olson of Duluth; grandchildren Kristi Rose and Tabbatha Olson, both of Duluth; sisters Arline Knutson of Williams, Minn., Carol Beth of Washington and Bea (Don) Hanson of Duluth; a brother, Robert Olson of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.
