VERNON (OLE) ECKLUND
Vernon (Ole) Ecklund, 66, of Duluth died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born in Duluth on April 30, 1935, to Esther Bridgo and Harold Ecklund. Vernon attended Lakewood School and Central High School. He lived in Lakewood Township until he entered the Air Force in 1954, serving four years. Vernon was married and had twin sons, who were adopted by a Navy commander in 1957. He lived a short time in Fairmont, Minn., and worked at Armour and Co., and later at Duluth Sheltered Work Shop.

Vernon was a member of Exeter Farms Lutheran Church in Lakewood, where he was confirmed when he was young. He was well liked by those who knew him. In his youth years, his best friends were Joe and Dan McCorison. Growing up, he and his brothers worked very hard on the small farm in Lakewood. Bob and Frieda Jackman was very good friends of his in later years, taking him to the VA Hospital to see doctors. In 1958, Vernon was severely injured in a car accident and spent a lot of time with doctors and hospital stays.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his only real brother, Donald Ecklund in 1977; half brothers Christian (Butch) Christensen, Jerry and Roy; and a stepbrother, Floyd.

Vernon is survived by all his friends in the Waters of Park Point health care facility, where he lived for years; a sister-in-law, Marie (Ecklund) Paulson; stepsister Betty Johnson of Fairmont; stepbrothers Marvin Christensen of Mounds View, Minn., and Kenneth Christensen of Wyoming, Minn.; nephews Michael and Thomas Ecklund of (Lakewood) Duluth; and a niece, Patty (Ecklund) Johnson of Duluth.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Waters of Park Point, Chaplain Sarah Lund officiating. Lunch and fellowship to follow. Vernon was buried in Sunrise Memorial cemetery on Oct. 18.

EMORY COOPER HERENDEEN
Emory Cooper Herendeen, 79, of Anderson Road, Hermantown died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Emory was born in Grand Rapids on Feb. 1, 1922, to Emory W. and Margaret (Redmayne) Herendeen. He served our country in the Air Force during World War II. He married Joyce Bennett on Aug. 20, 1948, in Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor. Emory worked as a clerk for Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co. for 32 years. He was a former Boy Scout leader, a member of Salem Lutheran Church, and Lincoln Park VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; a daughter, Sally (Robert) McCracken of Sand Lake, N.Y.; a son, Jeff Herendeen Sr. of Duluth; grandchildren Josiah, Joanna, and Ben Allen, and Jeff Herendeen Jr.; brothers William (Lorraine) Herendeen and James (Mary Ann) Herendeen; and sisters Helen (Tony) Staniger and Maryann (Joseph) Rapolz.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Wednesday in Bell Brothers Chapel and continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Thursday in Salem Lutheran Church, the Rev. Richard C. Hane officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

HERBERT LYLE "HERB" ANDERSON
Herbert Lyle "Herb" Anderson, 38, of Fifth Street, Proctor died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Beaver Bay.
He was born in Duluth on May 1, 1963, to Herbert L. Sr. and Constance Mary (Mencel) Anderson. He worked for The Chromaline Corp. since 1989. He married Laurie Anne Wilton on Nov. 3, 1990, in Munger Township. Herb was an avid NASCAR fan and liked to four-wheel, fish and cook. He enjoyed life, had a joke for everyone, and offered a helping hand for everyone. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

Herb was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Andrew and Christine Anderson; and his maternal grandparents, Sophia and Adolph Mencel.

Survivors include his wife, Laurie; his parents, Herbert L. Sr. and Connie Anderson of Duluth; his brother, John A. (Bridget Waller) of Duluth; sisters Mary (Fred Bodin) Holz of Holyoke and Anne (Jim) Einbu of Duluth; his father and mother-in-law, Tom and Frieda Wilton of Brookston; and by his brothers and sisters-in-law; aunts; uncles; nephews; many friends; and loyal companions Lacy, Rufus and Priscilla.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

RAYMOND W. LUOMA
Raymond W. Luoma, 62, of Duluth died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
He was born April 4, 1939, to Jacob and Ellen Luoma in Duluth. He was an Army veteran and worked for St. Luke's hospital for 20 years as a linen porter. He enjoyed listening to jazz music.

Raymond was preceded in death by his father, Jacob.

He is survived by his mother, Ellen, of Duluth; a sister, Mary (Wayne Smith), of Lugoff, S.C.; a brother, Ed (Millie), of Astoria, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in Forest Hill cemetery Chapel. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

JOHN JOSEPH LANDSTROM
John Joseph Landstrom died and went to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 8, 2001.

Born in Duluth, to John and Katherine Landstrom, who preceded him in death, John had been a successful business owner and entrepreneur in Portland, Ore., for the past 34 years. He was founder of Col-Tab Inc., Mail-Mark Inc., Air-Go Messenger Service and Mark-7 Delivery Service. He attributed his success to the support of his wife and family and his personal integrity and honesty. He would say, "My word is law, " and would make this his personal guarantee to fulfill any and all customer needs.

John was a family man who attended Glisan Street Baptist Church and made it known that his family came first. He was a hockey coach for Portland Amateur Hockey Association, a fan of the St. Mary's Blue Volleyball team, a supporter of the Jefferson Dancers and the Portland Youth Philharmonic and a fifth-grade basketball coach. He was supportive of many other activities his children and grandchildren were involved in. John's passion was his home. He would rather "putz" in the yard than vacation. He would love to have family and friends over to share what he had. His children and grandchildren's friends were always welcome. Anyone coming during mealtime was always asked to stay and then offered the price of "the Blue Plate Special for just $2.50." However you knew John, either as the "Big Kahuna, " "Big John, " "Mr. Landstrom, " "Papa, " or as Dad, you know his wealth was invested in what he could give to others, not his own treasures.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janet; children Mike (Patty) Landstrom, Mark (Janette) Landstrom, Denise (Richard Dowless), Jill Landstrom, Johnnie Landstrom, and David (Kym) Landstrom; grandchildren Andrea, Nicole, Stephanie, Jennifer, Chelsea, Lindsay, Ethan, Andrew, Jordan, Sarah, Meagan, Matthew and Jacob; brothers Dan and David; and sisters Linda, Mary and Lois.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Saturday in Hinson Memorial Baptist Church, 1137 S.E. 20th Ave., Portland, Ore. Gifts and remembrances to the National Psoriasis Foundation and Northwest Medical Teams or a charity of your choosing. Arrangements by Portland Memorial Funeral Home, (503) 236-4141.

LORRAINE D. JANZEN
Lorraine D. Janzen, 80, formerly of Duluth passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2001.
She was born in Grantsburg, Wis., Sept. 29, 1921, to Robert and Clara Swanstrom. She graduated from Grantsburg High School and Bethesda School of Nursing in St. Paul. She married John Janzen July 17, 1945, in Waukegan, Ill. She was an ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps, worked for the St. Louis County Health Dept. for 14 years and was director of nurses in nursing homes for 20 years. She was formerly a longtime member of Emanuel Baptist Church in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55-plus years, John Janzen; parents Robert and Clara Swanstrom; infant brother, Alden Swanstrom; sister, Beatrice Swanstrom-Carlson.

She is survived by a daughter, Carla (John) Theisen; grandchildren Sarah, Derek and Heidi (Mark) Neaman; four great-grandchildren; many relatives and friends.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE WAS HELDOct. 8 in Calvary Baptist Church, Roseville, Minn. Private interment set for Oct. 28 in Wood River cemetery, Grantsburg, Wis.

ROSE F. HIGGINS
Rose F. Higgins, 86, longtime resident of Duluth passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001.
She was born March 15, 1915, in Aurora. Rose married Elmer "Bill" Magnuson in 1937. Mr. Magnuson passed away in 1956. In 1961, she married John J. Higgins. Rose was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Legion of Mary, Cursillo, Plus 55 Club, Retail Clerks Union, Altar and Rosary Society.

Rose was an excellent seamstress; she could make anything. She enjoyed baking for family and friends. Rose cherished her family especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Higgins; brothers Joseph, Stanley and Henry; sisters Frances, Carol and Marie.

She is survived by her children, Richard (Judith) Magnuson of Verona, Wis., Karen (Glenn) Schramm of Duluth; grandchildren David, Stacey, Stephen and Kristen; great-grandchildren Sarah and Austin; sisters Jennie Roberts and Pat Hoskinson; numerous nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel with prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Duluth Heights. Burial in Aurora. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

MARSHALL S. PRATT
Marshall S. Pratt, 85, of Albert Lea, Minn., died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in Thorne Crest Retirement Center in Albert Lea.
Survivors include his wife, June, of Albert Lea; children Barbara (Marlow) Jordahl of Loveland, Ohio, and Robert (Lisa) and James (Carol) Pratt, all of Duluth; grandchildren Scott Jordahl, Julie Jordahl Greiwe, Jeffrey Jordahl, Anna Pratt, Betsy Pratt, Jennifer Pratt, Melissa Pratt and Nathan Pratt; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Roberta Alston of Santa Ana, Calif.
MEMORIAL SERVICES WERE HELDOct. 9 in First Presbyterian Church, Albert Lea.

KENNETH R. WAINIO
Kenneth R. Wainio, 47, of Duluth died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point health care facility.

A lifelong resident of Duluth, he served in the Army.

He is survived by brother, William of Cannon Falls; a sister, Diane Liukkonen of Duluth; nieces Tracey, Darcy and Kara Keppers; Carol Eilefson (beloved friend) and Dale Olson (lifelong friend), both of Duluth.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Park Hill cemetery Chapel. Arrangements by Fred Olson Mortuary.

LILLY MATHILDA (MATTSON) STROMGREN
Lilly Mathilda (Mattson) Stromgren, 92, of Duluth died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, in Edgewood Vista.
She was born Sept. 24, 1909, in French River, Minn., to Lake Superior fishermen Leander and Selma (Bergandahl) Mattson. As a young woman, she worked as a nanny for families in Michigan and California. Lilly married Harry Stromgren May 18, 1935. Together they operated Stromgren Tank Manufacturing with Harry's brother, George. She later worked at McGregor Soderstrom as a bookkeeper. Lilly was also active in the Girl Scouts as a leader of Troop 27 in French River. Lilly was an avid hunter and fisherman. Throughout her married life they enjoyed the Gunflint Wilderness. Lilly loved Lake Superior, whether fishing or walking along the shore. She enjoyed travel, her cabin and being with her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Lilly was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry; sisters Inez, Irene, Ellen and Ingrid; and brothers Theodore and Hjalmar.

She is survived by a daughter, Judith (Robert) Ostern; grandchildren Ann (Eric) Neetenbeek, Gerald Ostern and Theodore (Kelli) Ostern; great-grandchildren Christian Ostern and Louisa Neetenbeek; a sister, Julia Alseth; and nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Johnson Mortuary. Burial in Palmers Lakeview cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Edgewood Vista Alzheimer Care Unit, 4195 Westburg Road, Hermantown, MN 55811, or the Alzheimer's Association, 424 W. Superior, St. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
