MARY FILTER SPANG
Mary Filter Spang, 87, of East First Street died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 30, 1914, in Norway, Mich., and grew up in Bessemer. She graduated from Bessemer High School and received her registered nurse diploma and her certification as a nurse anesthetist from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Duluth. She worked at Miller-Dwan Medical Center and St. Mary's Medical Center. In 1945, she married Dr. James S. Spang.

Mary was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, St. Mary's Auxiliary and Benedictine Health Center Auxiliary, where she was an active volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Frederick and Katherine Brackett Filter; and a brother, William Filter.

Mary is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Mary Lou Spang, and their children, Elizabeth and Vincent Breza, Gretchen and Christopher Manchester, and Stephanie Spang; and a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and James Monge, and their children, James, Matthew, Michael and Katherine Monge.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. today with prayers at 7 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Michael's Church. Memorials to St. Mary's Medical Center Foundation or Benedictine Health Center Foundation. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

GWENDOLYN RUNKLE
Gwendolyn Runkle, 85, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Gwen and Tom, longtime residents of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., moved to Duluth in spring 2000 to be closer to family. She had been living with her husband, Tom, in Edgewood Vista in Duluth. For many years, Gwen was a librarian at the public library in Sturgeon Bay. Her love of books and people led her to often say, "Being a reference librarian is the best job in the world."

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Thomas; sons Karl of Farmington, N.M., and Paul of Duluth; and grandsons Steven, Erik and Michael.
A PRIVATE FAMILY MEMORIAL will be held. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota, Duluth, 624-5200.

EDWARD R.
SKWIERAWSKI
Edward R. Skwierawski, 83, of Regent Street did Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on Sept. 6, 1918. In World War II, he was in the Army Intelligence Division. He received a bachelor of arts degree in music at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, a master's degree in music at Northwestern University and completed his doctoral coursework at Indiana University. Edward was orchestra and band director at St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, and St. Leo's Private Boys College, near Tampa, Fla. He moved to Duluth in 1955 and taught string instrumental music in Denfeld High School and was the orchestra director for 17 years. He was a local pioneer in the Suzuki method of string instrumental teaching. Until his retirement, he performed as a first violinist with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, in which several of his former students now perform. He also tuned pianos for the Duluth public schools. He was a member of Northwest Gun Club, enjoyed scuba diving, opera, his Lincoln automobiles, his German shepherds, and his violins.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley in March of 2001; brothers Arthur and Valentine; and a sister, Regina.

He is survived by his brother, Leonard Skwierawski of Milwaukee; and many nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Johnson Mortuary. Interment in Arlington cemetery, Milwaukee. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

ARNOLD CLIFFORD "ARNE" HANSON
Arnold Clifford "Arne" Hanson, 69, of Dodge Street died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Arne was born in Duluth to Olaf and Frances (Hermanson) Hanson on Jan. 20, 1932. Arne graduated from Duluth Central High School and attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and was stationed in Korea, Japan and the Philippines. Arne married Natalie Anderson in Superior on July 12, 1958.

He worked as an insurance agent for 25 years with American Family Insurance and ISA. Arne was a member of Lester Park United Methodist Church. He loved woodworking, being with his children and grandchildren and traveling with his wife in their motorhome.

Arne was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Adolph; his brother, Orville; and a sister, Sylvia Ostlie.

Survivors include his wife, Natalie; sons Scott (Carolyn) of Johnson City, Tenn., and Jeffrey (Laurie) of Bloomington, Minn.; a daughter, Jill (Kenneth) Patterson of Bloomington; sisters-in-law Lois Hanson of Duluth, Priscilla (John) Keller of Iron River and Jacqueline (Roger) Anderson of Lombard, Ill.; grandchildren Lindsey, Evan, Troy, Matthew, Mckenna and Isaac; and many nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel and continues from 1 until the 2 p.m. service Friday in Lester Park United Methodist Church. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Memorials to the American Cancer Society, Duluth Chapter would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

JEROME "JERRY" HOCKBEIN
Jerome "Jerry" Hockbein, 61, of Monroe, N.C., died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in his residence.
Mr. Hockbein was born June 17, 1940, in Duluth, the son of Mrs. Frances S. Hockbein and the late Peter James Hockbein Sr. He was employed with Diamond Tool Co. in Duluth for 32 years and was then transferred to Cooper Tool Co. in Monroe for six and a half years.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Markeda Nordby; and a brother, Peter Hockbein.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jan G. Hockbein; a son, Adam Acosta of Indian Trail, N.C.; daughters Corrinea Hickman of Sorrenta, Fla., Donna Crews of Spooner, Kimberly Crews, Janie Owens, Julie Pickett and Christine Crews, all of Monroe; his mother, Frances of Duluth; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and service at 2 p.m. Thursday in McEwen Colonial Chapel, Monroe. Burial in Lakeland Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe, NC 28110. Arrangements by McEwen Funeral Home, Monroe.

CHARLES E. LAPORTE
Charles E. LaPorte, 74, of Las Vegas died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in a Las Vegas hospital, of heart failure.
Mr. LaPorte retired as vice-president of the American Maritime Officers. He formerly resided in Temperance, Mich., and Duluth, before retiring in Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Lawrence and Charles.

Mr. LaPorte is survived by his wife, Verna; sons Pierre (Lona) of Woodhaven, Mich., and Jean (Karen) of Moorpark, Calif.; daughters Lynne (Jim) Dunnigan of Lambertville, Mich., and Nana (Bob) McKinnon of Allen Park, Mich.; sisters Theresa Goulette of Marysville, Mich., and Lucille LaCroix of St. Clair, Mich.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
NO SERVICES will be held, as per his wishes. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

MARGARET ANN LAWRENCE
Margaret Ann Lawrence, 71, of Beaverton, Ore., died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001.
She was born in Duluth on Sept. 15, 1930. Margaret retired from Cere's Inc. of Duluth in 1984.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, John and Frances Bubacz.

Survivors include her husband, Dale; a sister, Irene (Ed) Mulvahill of Beaverton; brothers Ray Bubacz of Beaverton and Leonard (Darlene) Bubacz of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews.
SERVICE: 10 a.m. today in Riverview Cemetary Chapel, Portland.

GERALD W. LOWE
Gerald W. Lowe, 56, of Crown Point, Ind., formerly of Duluth passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001.
Gerald was born in Duluth, the son of Earl F. Lowe Jr. and Amy M. Smith Lowe.

He is survived by sisters Sharon (Michael) Ross of Cottage Grove, Minn., Louise (Ronald) Stack of Sauk Rapids, Minn., and Judy (Irv) Taran of East Lansing, Mich.; a brother, Earl F. (Audrey) Lowe III, of Seabrook, Texas; and his close friend, Robert Alters of Crown Point.
FUNERAL SERVICES were private with cremation following. Arrangements by Burns Funeral Home, (219) 769-0044.

DALE E. KUSNIEREK SR.
Dale E. Kusnierek Sr., 69, of West Morgan Street died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 12, 1932, to Cashimur and Blanche Kusnierek. Dale was a lifelong Duluth resident, attending schools here. He served with the Army Military Police Detachment for two years. He was a member of the Teamsters Retirement Club, and enjoyed camping and fishing as a hobby.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kirk; a grandson, Cash; a brother, Richard; and brothers-in-law Johney Carbaugh and Mike Mesedahl.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Patty; daughters Sis (Lonn) Viele and Holly (Brian) Sorlie, both of Duluth; sons Mark (Lori) and Dale (Patti) Kusnierek, both of Duluth; 15 grandchildren; a sister, Faye Olson of Duluth; and many nieces and nephews.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 4 p.m. today in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. No visitation. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
