Rosemary D. Nolin
Rosemary D. Nolin, 64, of Midway Township died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, in her home.
She was born May 12, 1936, in Blair, Wis., to Ole and Marian Thomsen Pederson. She married Donald E. Nolin Dec. 17, 1951, in Midway Township. Rosemary was a beauty operator and owner of Rosemary's Carousel Coiffures until she sold her business in 1985. After a short retirement, she obtained her real estate license. Eight years into her 11-year real estate career, she was designated a Certified Residential Specialist.

Rosemary was a member of Northern City Baptist Church and a former member of Lincoln Park (Temple) Baptist Church. An active member of the West Duluth Business and Civil Organization, she was instrumental in changing the name of West Duluth to Spirit Valley. She also was a force behind changing the name of the West Duluth Businessmen's Association to the current Spirit Valley Business and Civic Organization. Rosemary also had volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital in day surgery.

She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Nolin Jr.; and a sister, Jeannie.

Rosemary is survived by her husband of 49 years, Don; daughters Kellie (Scott) Anderson of Florida and Kimberly Nolin of Minneapolis; a son, Robert (Marilyn) of Las Vegas; brothers David (Pat) and Dennis (Sonja) Pederson, all of Duluth; sisters Carol (Richard) Johnson of Duluth and Linda (Butch) Neil of Washington state; and three grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and 10 until 11 a.m. service Saturday in Lincoln Park Baptist Church. Burial in Augustana Lutheran Church cemetery. Memorials received by the family will be given to St. Luke's Hospice.

Paul J. Cebulla
Paul J. Cebulla, 44, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in his Northfield, Minn., home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was a mechanic and had been an employee of Herculift for the past several years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Patty and Grace; parents Robert and stepmom, Ann; a brother, Patrick; a nephew, Bobby; many other family members and friends.
A graveside service will be held in Calvary cemetery, Duluth, in May. Mass of Christian burial was Feb. 19 in the Church of the Annunciation, Hazelwood, Minn. Cards may be sent to Robert Cebulla, 10205 E. Coopers Hawk Drive, Sun Lakes, AZ 85248.

Barbara Lucinda (Garthus) Scandin
Barbara Lucinda (Garthus) Scandin, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, of cancer in Mora, Minn.
She was born Dec. 31, 1937, and was a former resident of Duluth.

She is survived by her loving husband, Gerald "Jerry"; children Candis (Daniel) Marudas, Cheryl (Charles) Watson, Cathy (David) Linedecker, Gerald Scandin, Loreen (David) Schulstad and Leah (Paul) Harris; grandchildren Dwayne (Lori) Marudas, Karen (Chad) Quigley, Sarah Watson and Nikolas and Kallie Linedecker; great-grandchildren Marissa Marudas and Karly Watson; brothers Dick and George Garthus; and a sister, Donna Overby.
A private ceremony was held at her home in Mora. Memorials may be made to Lewis Lake Covenant Church in Ogilvie, Minn.

Richard H. Kachelmyer
Richard H. Kachelmyer, 76, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001.
Richard was born March 8, 1925, in Mankato, Minn., to Henry and Christine Kachelmyer. After graduating from high school in 1943 Richard was called to serve in the Army. Richard was a Bronze Star and Purple Heart combat veteran of the 34th Division in Italy during World War II. In 1946, Rich moved to Duluth and in 1953, he married Anne Mikalka and started a family.

Richard began working for the Harley-Davidson dealer in Duluth while attending junior college, and in October 1951, at the age of 26, he purchased the dealership from his employer. Richard's purchase of the business marked the beginning of a 50-year-long career as the Harley-Davidson dealer in Duluth.

Since his boyhood, Richard's passion for motorcycling ran deep and consumed his heart. Richard's dedication to the sport spanned his entire lifetime. In his youth Richard enjoyed participating in hill climbs, gypsy tours as well as other rallies and races. Richard belonged to various clubs and organizations over the years, including a lifetime member of the American Motorcycle Association, the Duluth Cycle Club, a charter member of the "Potrzebies, " and a charter member of the Duluth Harley Owners Group.

Richard also enjoyed aviation and model aircraft, antique clocks, woodworking and leatherwork. He enjoyed cooking and often experimented with unusual recipes, turning the meal into an adventure. Richard was also known for his keen wit and sense of humor. His family, present friends and his friends from the "romantic past" will miss him.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Anne; and his parents.

He is survived by a daughter, Debora (Phillip) Buccieri of Minneapolis; sons David of Minnetonka, Minn., Dennis (Suzanne), Robert (Cindy) and Martin, all of Duluth, Allen of St. Paul; grandchildren Sara and Joseph; brothers Clem (Mary) of St. Paul, John (Deanna) of Duluth; many nieces and nephews, dear friends and colleagues.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at St. Mary's Regional Heart Center and St. Mary's Hospice for their help and support.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Johnson Mortuary with a prayer vigil at 6:30 p.m. A prayer vigil at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday precedes the 10:30 a.m. service in Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Interment in Calvary cemetery. All motorcycles are welcome in the procession from the church to the cemetery.

Jason L. Pool
TV meteorologist
Jason L. Pool, 30, of Green Bay, Wis., died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at a local hospital after a yearlong battle with brain cancer.
He was born Aug. 25, 1971, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Greg and Jo Ann (Watts) Pool. On July 17, 1993, he married Carri Drummer in St. Peter, Minn. Jason had been a meteorologist at WLUK TV 11 in Green Bay for the past three years. Prior to this, he had been employed at KBJR TV 6 in Duluth and as forecasting manager of the regional weather information center in Grand Forks, N.D. He was a graduate of the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks with a degree in meteorology. While there, Jason was awarded Outstanding Graduating Senior and Outstanding Service to the Department from the College of Atmospheric Sciences. He was a member of the American Meteorological Society and an A.M.S. Sealholder. Jason was also a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Green Bay.

Jason is survived by his wife, Carri; a son, David, and daughter, Megan; his parents, Greg and Jo Ann Pool of St. Peter; a brother, Trent Pool of Bemidji; grandmothers Virginia Pool of New London, Wis., and Mabel "Dot" Watts of Humboldt, Iowa; aunts and uncles Craig and Renee Baumgartner of New London, Wis., Golden and DeEtte Pool of Mankato, Minn., and Bruce and Denise Eastman of Gilmore City, Iowa; cousins Shannon Baumgartner of Birmingham, Ala., Cory and Toni Eastman of Gilmore City; his father- and mother-in-law, Stephen and Teresa Drummer of Kasota, Minn.; sisters and brother-in-law, Stephanie and Justin Giefer of Green Bay and Jennifer Drummer of St. Peter; and nieces and a nephew, Emily, Sierra, Anissa and Coleton.
Friends may call: 4-8 p.m. Tuesday in Lyndahl Funeral Home, 1350 Lombardi Ave., Green Bay, Wis. 54304. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Calvary Lutheran Church, 1301 S. Ridge Road, Green Bay, the Rev. Earl Vorpagel III officiating. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established. Memorials may be sent to Lyndahl Funeral Home, (920) 499-1223. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff members at the St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center, St. Vincent Hospital and Unity Hospice for their special care.

Olga Thomsen
Olga Thomsen, 91, of Duluth, passed away Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth after a short illness of cancer.
Olga was born to Mikkel and Annie (Everson) Bertilrud on June 7, 1910, in Greenbush, Minn. She was united in marriage to Fred Thomsen on Sept. 4, 1938.

Olga was a member of First Lutheran Church, Nu Agers, Top Notchers and Normanna Garden Club. She loved picking berries, traveling, gardening, playing Scrabble and visiting. Although Olga did not have any children of her own, she loved taking care of children. Olga was a very caring and loving person.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, in 1995; her parents; and her brothers Arnold and Edwin Bertilrud.

Olga is survived by her sisters Clara Boe, Gunda Bertilrud and Lillian Lennon, all of Duluth, and Mabel Erickson and Helen Kilen, both of Greenbush, Minn.; brothers Maurice (Arlene) Bertilrud of Greenbush and Rudolph (Verna) Bertilrud of Alburn, Wash.; sisters-in-law JoAnn Bertilrud and Myrtle Bertilrud, both of Greenbush; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel and continues from 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in First Lutheran Church, 1100 E. Superior St., Duluth. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown. Arrangements by Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Larry L. MacDonald
Larry L. MacDonald, 67, of Hamilton, Ohio, formerly of Duluth, died in his home Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001.
He was born in Duluth on April 21, 1934, the son of Roswell and Marie (Stokes) MacDonald. He was married to Marilyn Antile MacDonald. He then married Loraine Schneider Payne on Nov. 21, 1970, in Oxford, Ohio. Mr. MacDonald owned and operated his own trucking business.

He was a member of the Trenton (Ohio) Moose Lodge #330 and the Eagles Lodge #407.

He is survived by his wife, Loraine; children, Robert (Susan), James and Wayne (Yvonne), all of Duluth, Cindy Carpenter of Las Vegas and Wendy (Larry) Vester of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada; stepchildren Bob (Geri) Payne and Mel Payne, both of Richland Center, Wis., and Marjorie Peasall of Reedsburg, Wis.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; 15 stepgrandchildren; and 12 great-stepgrandchildren.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in Webb Noonan Funeral Home, Ross Avenue at D Street, in Hamilton, where the service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial in Millville cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Trenton Moose Lodge #300, Trenton, OH 45067.

Bernard Howard Kaner
Bernard Howard Kaner, 64, of London Road, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
Bernie was born in Superior on March 25, 1937, to Hymen and Rose Azemove Kaner. He graduated from East High School and the University of Minnesota Business School in 1959. He was a United States Army veteran and the owner and operator of Kaner Marine Supply Co. and H.K. Realty Co.

Bernie was a member of Temple Israel Synagogue and was House president of his fraternity, Phi Epsilon Pi, while in college. His father, Hymen, started the Bum Boat in the 1930s which serviced the ore boats here in the harbor. They also started the excursion boats that are now the Vista Fleet.

He loved playing poker and going to Las Vegas and was an avid power walker on the Lakewalk.

Bernie was preceded in death by his father, Hymen; and his wife, Sandy.

He is survived by his partner, Mary Ann Westman; mother, Rose Kaner of Minneapolis; daughter, Ann (Marc) Kaner-Roth of Minneapolis; son, Jeff E. Kaner of Duluth; a granddaughter, Avia Kaner-Roth of Minneapolis; and a brother, James (Mary) of Minneapolis.
Service: 1 p.m. Sunday in Temple Israel Synagogue. Burial in Superior Hebrew cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to ADL or donor's choice. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Helen (Erickson) Jackson
Helen (Erickson) Jackson, 92, formerly of Duluth, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, in Simonstad Nursing Home, Osceola, Wis.
She is survived by sons Darrell, Richard and Kenneth Erickson; siblings Eileen Nelson and Robert and John Hovland; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service today in Trinity Lutheran Church, Osceola. Interment will be at 2 p.m. today at Oneota cemetery, Duluth. Arrangements are by Grandstrand Funeral Home, Osceola.
