Marjorie (Mathisen) Thom
Marjorie (Mathisen) Thom, 84, of Oneida Street passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
She was born May 24, 1916, in Duluth and lived in the Lakeside area throughout her life. She married Louis Thom in 1946 and worked at Conrad Furs and Burlington Northern Railway. She and her husband enjoyed many wonderful trips together over the years. Marjorie was a 59-year member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church.

Marjorie will be remembered for her kind and compassionate heart. She loved animals, especially those pets who brought joy to her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis in 1977.

Marjorie is survived by friends, Wendy and Terry, and her dog, Missy.
Service: 10 a.m. Friday in Sunrise Memorial Park Chapel with burial following. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.

Roger Ernest Green
Roger Ernest Green, 79, of Bel Aire Avenue died Monday, May 7, 2001, at home.
Roger was born in Buffalo, Minn., and had lived in Cloverland, Wis., before moving to Duluth 36 years ago. He had worked in farming, logging, trucking and mining in Alaska before retiring.

Roger was an active member of Lakeview Covenant Church, where he was always involved in church leadership and missions and had served as a church elder. Roger loved music and playing his accordion and was also known for his woodworking and cabinet making. He was probably best-known for his sense of humor, which will be sadly missed.

Roger is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lois; sons Doug (Margie) Green of Brainerd and Timothy (Connie) Green of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughters Lorraine Green of Chad, Africa, and Renee Peterson of Duluth; sisters Muriel Kubitz of Chicago and Pat Milton of Bridgeport, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Dougherty Funeral Home and continues noon until the 1 p.m. service Thursday in Lakeview Covenant Church. Interment in Cloverland Covenant cemetery. Memorials to Lakeview Covenant Church and the Chinese Fellowship would be appreciated. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Catherine "Kay" (McQuade) Robertson
Catherine "Kay" (McQuade) Robertson, 81, of Glenwood Street died peacefully in her home on Monday, May 7, 2001.
She was born Dec. 2, 1919, in St. Paul to John and Ann (Clancy) McQuade. Catherine graduated from Johnson High School in St. Paul and worked at Montgomery Ward until her marriage in 1942. A dedicated homemaker, she faithfully followed her husband through his frequent transfers with Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., making many friends with her kindness and generous spirit. She especially enjoyed their years in Hibbing from 1950 to 1959. She also left friends in Albert Lea, Minn.; Rochester, Minn.; St. Paul; Waseca, Minn.; Austin, Minn.; and Minneapolis. Duluth became her permanent home in 1960 when they moved from Minneapolis.

She was active in St. Michael's Catholic Church Circle and her neighborhood sewing club until recent years of confinement. An avid boater with her husband, Catherine was also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Carolyn Dean, who recently passed away from the same disease, acute leukemia. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John (Merie) McQuade.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Charles Robertson; her brother, Donald (Muggs) McQuade of St. Paul; her sons, Richard (Jan) Robertson and Tom (Marilyn) Robertson, both of Duluth; her daughters, Mary Kay (Jim) Van Kempen of Ham Lake, Minn., and Barb Susnik of St. Cloud, Minn.; grandchildren Amber and Rachel Dean of Duluth, Scott Lathrop of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ryan Lathrop of Duluth; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Catherine spent her life creating a home filled with warmth, love and laughter. She was the light of her husband's life and was able to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary on May 2, 2001, for a joyous final celebration with her family. Catherine was a wonderful partner, mother, friend and neighbor to all who were blessed to know her. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Mary's Hospice for their kindness and support during Catherine's illness.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday with wake prayers at 6:30 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation continues 2:30 until the 3 p.m. funeral Mass Friday in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Interment in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Martha Wojtkowiak
Martha Wojtkowiak, 96, of Devonshire Street died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice Unit.
Martha was a homemaker and a member of St. Josephat's Polish National Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley on July 22, 1982; a daughter, Irene Bukowski on Jan. 12, 1995; and a grandson, Larry Ray Bukowski in May 1964.

She is survived by a son, Clarence (Theresa) Wojtkowiak of Duluth; sisters Verna Tamillo of Duluth, Sylvia Miller of Michigan and Elizabeth Murto of Florida; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Lenroot Chapel. Burial in the Polish Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Steven and Jeff Wojtkowiak, Roger Bukowski, Gary Bolander, and Mark and Mathew Peterson. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Lenroot Chapel, 2231 W. Third St.

John James Dardis
John James Dardis, 84, of Proctor passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home.
He was born March 27, 1916, to Jessie (Preston) and Frank Dardis in Duluth. He was a 1933 graduate of Proctor High School and attended Duluth Business University, the University of Minnesota Duluth and University of Minnesota.

John was employed by Phillips Petroleum Co. from 1935 to 1937, and then became first secretary for Proctor Water and Light Commission until 1942.

He was a first lieutenant in the Army serving during World War II in Bremen, Germany with the 115th Regimental Combat Team, 29th Infantry Division.

He returned to Proctor and managed the Water and Light Commission until 1948 when he became owner of Whitney Lumber and Fuel in Proctor. He served several years as member of the Proctor Police and Civil Service Commission.

In 1950, he married Loretta Brassard, and she died in 1975 after 25 years of marriage. He was appointed first Proctor city clerk-treasurer in 1965 and retired in 1980.

He was the first World War II commander and life member of the Proctor American Legion Post 106 and a former member of the VFW. He was a longtime member of Forbes United Methodist Church and AARP.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Murray "Red" Whitney.

John is survived by his wife, Addie, whom he married Nov. 25, 1977; sons John Dale (Robyn) and Bruce (Charlene), both of Duluth; grandchildren Joseph, Jayson and Derek Dardis, and Amie (Ryan) Armbruster; stepsons Gordon (Mary) Thoreson of Superior, Rick (Wendy) Thoreson of Lake Nebagamon and Kyle (Ann) Thoreson of Eveleth; a stepdaughter, Darla (Gary) Carlson of Burnsville, Minn.; 10 step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon service Saturday in Forbes United Methodist Church. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Raymond Gene Helwig
Raymond Gene Helwig, 67, of Duluth died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, in his home.
He was born June 27, 1933, in Webster, S.D., to Leocadia and John Helwig, where he was also raised.

Ray enlisted in the Marine Corps and served honorably from 1952 to 1954.

He attended the University of North Dakota-Ellendale and received an associate's degree in physical education. He taught high school in North Dakota before entering into sales with World Book Encyclopedia and selling insurance.

From 1976 until his retirement in 1995, he worked for the City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Department as the supervisor of the Woodland Community Club. He had a talent for volunteering and coaching that he shared with others throughout his lifetime. He helped coach the St. Michael's Tiger Pony League football team, as well as coaching three of his sons in youth hockey and little league baseball.

In later years, he volunteered his time with other seniors in arts and crafts. Ray enjoyed seeing others proud of their own achievements. He was well liked by those for whom he volunteered, and his visits were eagerly anticipated. He was especially grateful to the staff and residents of St. Ann's and the Rainbow Center for allowing him to continue his woodworking projects over the course of this last difficult year. Ray was also a talented gardener.

He was preceded in death by a son, Steve; and his wife, Helen.

Ray is survived by sons Tim (Beth) and John (Carol); a daughter, Tammy; and beloved grandchildren Ryan, Tyler, Erinn, Megan and Lindsay.
Visitation: 12:30 until the 1 p.m. service Friday in Forest Hill Chapel. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, 600 E. Second St.

Sandra Lynn "Sandy" Martineau
Sandra Lynn "Sandy" Martineau, 53, of Deep Lake Road, Iron River and a former Duluth resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.
Sandy was born in Duluth to Veli F. and Bernice D. (Cahill) Klint March 1, 1947. She has lived in Iron River for the past 15 years. She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Duluth, the ATV Club and Iron River Rebecca Lodge. Sandy was a loving mother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Diane Meysman; and an infant daughter, Sherri.

Sandy is survived by her mother, Bernice D. Klint of Duluth; her husband, Thomas J. "Tom"; a daughter, Terri L. (Bruce) Anderson of Duluth; a son, Gary D. "Bobo" of Hermantown; a brother, Dennis V. Klint of Duluth; her mother-in-law, Myrtle Kolek of Superior; a special friend, Marla Brabander of Iron River; grandchildren Ashley and Tommy Anderson, both of Duluth; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6:30 until the 7 p.m. memorial service Friday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Iron River. Inurnment in Oneota cemetery, Duluth. Local arrangements by Bell Brothers Chapel, Duluth.
