ELIZABETH M. BASLEY
Elizabeth M. Basley, 75, of Hill Avenue died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, in her residence.
She was born June 27, 1926, in Ashland, and lived in Superior the last 48 years. Her last employment was with Jeno's in Duluth and Superior.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; a son, Alex "Steve"; granddaughter Mista; and great-grandson Robert.
Survivors include her daughters, Paula (Charles) Winters of Superior, Leana "Pete" (Brian) Androski of Iron River and Lisa (Brian) Schumacher of Superior; son Gerard "Dewey" (Nancy) of Superior; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters Helen Revolinski and Mary Meyers, both of Superior; and brothers Raymond Freascher of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Henry Frazier of Superior.
Elizabeth was a wonderful mother with a special love for all children.
Visitation: 1 until the 3 p.m. service Tuesday in Downs Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Steve Kelleher officiating. Arrangements by Downs Funeral Home.
RITA NELSON
Rita Nelson, 67, of Superior passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2001.
Survivors include her brother, James (Genevieve) Sawicki; a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Jim) Peterson; nieces Mary (Jerry) Saylor and Adrianne (Joe) Nowicki; and great-nieces Katie and Elizabeth.
Visitation: 5 p.m. today with a 6:30 p.m. rosary service in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Francis Xavier Church. Internment in St. Francis cemetery.
ADRIENNE M. (MAKINEN) NYBERG
Adrienne M. (Makinen) Nyberg, 23, of Poplar died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001.
She is survived by her mother, Nedra (Richard) Amys; her father, James L. Makinen; brothers Cameron Trago and James R. Makinen; sisters Jamie Makinen and Tabitha Thoennes; and many other relatives.
Visitation: after 5 p.m. Sunday in Downs Funeral Home, where the 11 a.m. service Monday will also be held. Interment in Steenbergen cemetery, Mt. Pulaski, Ill.
AGNES G. (ZOWIN) ILKKA
Agnes G. (Zowin) Ilkka, 76, of Superior died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001.
She is survived by a daughter, Judy (Darrell) Carlson; sisters Regina Nelson, Mary Glonek and Anne Penney; a grandson, Cody Alan Carlson; and several nieces and nephews.

LOLA KAUHANEN
Lola Kauhanen, 77, of Iron River died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital, Superior.
She is survived by her sisters, Beatrice Heydon, Dorothy LaPerre, Shirley Kelly, Barbara "Joan" Garland and Judy Sobczak; and several nieces and nephew.
Visitation: 10 a.m. until the noon service Monday in Iron River VFW Post 10197. Interment in Iron River City cemetery. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior.
CONNIE M. IRWIN
Connie M. Irwin, 48, of Tower Avenue died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She is survived by her husband, Kurt; daughter Heather Miller; grandchildren Kody and Alexia Miller; parents Daniel and Betty Asbury; maternal grandmother Ida Wicker; and brothers James, Richard, Leon and Anthony Asbury.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Downs Funeral Home. Burial in Greenwood cemetery, Superior.
GLEN O. LAVIN
Glen O. Lavin, 71, of Superior died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Glen was born July 10, 1930, in Iron River to Samuel and Lucille Lavin. He served in the Air Force from 1948 to 1952, during the Korean War.
He was a member and past presidents of many Duluth and Superior organizations. He retired from the Wisconsin Department of Grain Commission in 1980.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara (Axelson); sons William (Tammi) and Ryan, both of Superior; stepson Duane Turner of Superior; stepdaughter Joanne Turner of Herbster; brother James (Betty) of Anchorage, Alaska; many cousins; and six grandchildren.

ROSEMARY "ROSE" JACOBSON
Rosemary "Rose" Jacobson, 45, of East End Superior died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001.
Survivors include her husband, Rolfe; daughters Erica (Patrick) McKinney, Rachel Jacobson and Sarah Jacobson; her father, Harold Baertlein; five brothers; and a grandson.
Visitation: begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday in William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery.
CARL VERGAMINI
Carl Vergamini, 84, of Superior went home to the Lord on Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, surrounded by his family.
He was born Feb. 27, 1917, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Silvio and Anunciata Vergamini. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1940 and received his master's also from the University of Iowa in 1958. While attending the University of Iowa, he was on the 1939 Iowa "Ironmen" football team with one of his teammates being the Heisman trophy winner, Nile Kinnick. He also was on the varsity wrestling team and was undefeated in the dual meet season of 1938 and was the team captain in 1939.
Carl coached high school sports in Hurley for nine years. His basketball team was the third place finisher in the Wisconsin High School Tournament 1943, the runners-up in Wisconsin in 1947, consolation state basketball champions in 1948 and the state basketball champions in 1949. They won five conference championships in the Michigan-Wisconsin conference in basketball and football. He went on to coach basketball at the University of Wisconsin Superior from 1954 to 1965. In 10 basketball seasons, he had eight winning teams. Carl started UWS baseball in 1956 and coached for the first seven seasons.
He taught at UWS for 25 years, and was previously inducted into the UWS, Superior-Douglas County, and Hurley Halls of Fame. He was also very active in the Boy Scouts, curling and swimming, and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres of Operation. After the war, he initiated the Army National Guard Combat Engineer Unit in Hurley in 1949, went on to serve in Superior and retired from the service in 1963 with the rank of captain.
Carl was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Wisconsin Coaches Association, Eagles Club, Knights of Columbus, Retired Officers Association, US-LST Association, Brule River Sportsmans Club, UWS Alumni Association, Hawkeye Area Wrestling Club, AARP, and the University of Iowa Alumni Association.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth, in 1971; his second wife, Elayne, in 1999; brothers Louis and Frank Vergamini; and sisters Sylvia, Mary and Emma.
Carl is survived by his special friend, Phyllis Severson of Superior; sons Dr. Jerome (Judy) Vergamini of Eugene, Ore., Dr. Phillip (Nora) Vergamini of Santa Fe, N.M., and Greg (Dawn) Vergamini of Superior; a daughter, Jan (John) Kinsley of Superior; brothers George and Leo Vergamini, both of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation: after 5 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. Scripture service in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Rev. Father James Tobolski as celebrant. Interment in St. Francis cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church steeple fund.
KENT R. JOHNSON
Kent R. Johnson, 59, of East Estness Road, Maple, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001.
Surviving are sisters Kay (David) Holmes, Karen Cristilly, Carroll (Ed) Moniot and Kim (Steve) Wedan; a brother, Scott (Donna) Johnson; 15 nieces and nephews; and 29 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visitation: 2-4 p.m. Sunday in Downs Funeral Home and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Mission Covenant Church, Poplar.
PEARL E. EHLERS
Pearl E. Ehlers, 82, a longtime Solon Springs resident, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She is survived by a sister, Viola (James) Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Interment in Evergreen cemetery, Solon Springs.
KENNETH LEROY FULLER
Kenneth LeRoy Fuller, 33, of Superior died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital, Duluth.
Kenneth was born in Rockford, Ill., Oct. 28, 1968, and had been a resident of Superior since 1973. He had been employed as a truck driver and was an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors.
Kenneth is survived by his mother, Priscilla (Robert) Petersen; his father, Richard "Rick" (Beth) Fuller of Superior; his paternal grandmother, Bada Jonason of Rockford, Ill.; a brother, Jim Fuller of Chisholm; stepbrothers Greg (Tanya) Ericksen and Dan (Sarah) Ericksen of Superior; a stepsister, Michelle (Tom) Kimmes of Superior; several nieces and nephews.
PRIVATE SERVICES will be held today in Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, the Rev. Gerald Preshun officiating. Inurnment to take place at a later date.
DANIEL J. DAVIS
Daniel J. Davis, 24, of Tower Avenue died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in his residence from a long illness of renal failure.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Claire and Al Heizman; his father, Kenneth Davis; brother Marc Ulmer; and grandmother Jeanette Swenson.
