He was born in Superior on July 18, 1905, to Christian and Olena (Peterson) Nielsen. Henry attended primary school in Wrenshall and graduated salutatorian, class of 1923, from Barnum High School.

As a youth Henry regularly earned blue ribbons showing sheep at the Carlton County Fair. He also judged cattle at the state fair, a long distance and exciting trip in those days. Henry and his agriculture teacher rode in an early Model-T Ford -- flat tires -- both ways.

He worked on his father's farm and then Northwest Paper, retiring in 1968. He managed the Felgin Apartments in Barnum for the next 20 years.

He received official invitations to Washington to attend and participate in the inaugurations of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, president, and Lyndon Baines Johnson, vice president, in 1961, and Jimmy Carter, president, and Walter Mondale, vice president, in 1977.

He received certificates of recognition from the state of Minnesota, Executive Department, signed by Gov. Rudy Perpich for "Outstanding Senior Citizen of Carlton County, 1983" and "Outstanding Contributor to Elder Minnesotans Quality of Life, 1986."

Henry was an avid baseball fan and traveled a five-state area scouting sandlot players for the original Duluth Dukes. He took great delight in letting people 50 years his junior "teach" him to play cribbage as he consumed an entire package of M&Ms.;

Henry will be sadly missed and remembered for his kindness, generosity and trademark pipe.

Survivors include cousins Doris Drill of Saginaw, Roger Drill of Washington, Evelyn Wingness of Burnsville, Minn., and Julia Boyd of Seattle, Wash.; and friends Teri Gouze, Joyce Novacinski and GolDurnKat.
