Janet M. Jensen
Janet M. Jensen, 61, of Eveleth died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in the Arrowhead Health Care Center in Eveleth.
She is survived by her children Brad (Cynthia) Hadrava, Daren Jensen, Sandra Pikula, and Debra and Bryan Jensen, all of Eveleth; four grandchildren; four sisters; three brothers; a brother-in-law; a sister-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 12:30 until the 1 p.m. memorial service Saturday in Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home, Eveleth.

Lempi J. Maki
Lempi J. Maki, 93, of Winton, Minn., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 21, 1908, in Winton to Victor and Hilma (Savola) Hill and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1926 and attended Superior State Teachers College. She married Toivo "Chick" Maki on Nov. 29, 1930.

She was a member of the Winton Garden Club, Winton Community Club and First Lutheran Church of Ely. She and her husband owned and operated Maki's Point Cabins on Fall Lake for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years; and brothers Frank and Nelo Hill.

She is survived by sons Robert (Joyce) Maki of Ely and James (Mary) Maki of Winton; brothers Matt (Molly) Hill of Ely and Robert (Opal) Hill of Bossier City, La.; sisters Ellen Hanson of Floodwood and Annie Sullivan of Gary Ind.; a sister-in-law, Ernestine Hill of Winton; a brother-in-law, Tauno (Josephine) Maki of Winton; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday in First Lutheran Church, Ely, the Rev. John Bonk officiating. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.

Leonard Lee
Leonard Lee of Aitkin and formerly of Deerwood, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in his home.
Service: 2 p.m. Sunday in Aitkin Westside Church. Arrangements by Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

Mary H. Filla
Mary H. Filla, 90, of Grand Rapids died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in Leisure Hills Care Center in Grand Rapids.
She is survived by daughters Margie Hengel and Lorraine Schaffer; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Thursday, April 19, in Pine Grove cemetery, Cass Lake. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Jay John Vogen
Jay John Vogen, 51, of Two Harbors rocketed to heaven Wednesday, April 18, 2001, from St. Luke's Hospital.
He was born Dec. 24, 1949, to Ray and Florence (Yetzer) Vogen in Minneapolis, where he grew up and graduated from Minneapolis Central High School and entered a pipefitter apprenticeship through Pipefitters Local 539. He served in the Marine Corps, then returned to Minneapolis and was employed as a pipefitter with Local 539 until August 2000. He had made his home in Two Harbors since 1989.

His family and fishing were his whole life. He didn't have an enemy in the world and never had a harsh word to say about anyone. He was loved and will be missed by all whose lives he touched. He was a staunch union man his whole life and was the instigator of the riot at Boise Cascade in International Falls against BE & K.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Two Harbors, Pipefitters Local 539, Minneapolis, and the Renegade Riders Saddle Club. He was a founding member of Leech Lake Muskie Invitational, where he caught the first muskie, and was the first winner of the traveling trophy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Gypsy in 1983.

He is survived by his wife, Sue of Two Harbors; a son, Forest (Becky) Vogen of Bloomington, Minn.; daughters Jodi (Kevin) Kirkpatrick of Wyoming, Minn., and Sam Vogen of Two Harbors; a sister, Joyce Vogen of Minneapolis; and five grandchildren.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today in Cavallin Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 2 p.m. Saturday in Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Two Harbors. Burial in Silver Creek cemetery, Silver Creek Township, Minn.

John M. Hobyan
John M. Hobyan, 88, of Eveleth died Wednesday, April 18, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; sons Bob and John Hobyan; daughters Judy (Pat) McNulty and Sue (Tim) Flannigan; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today with 7 p.m. rosary in Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home, Eveleth. Service at 10 a.m. Saturday in Resurrection Catholic Church, Eveleth. Burial in Eveleth cemetery.

Ann Marie Hirsch
Ann Marie Hirsch, 82, of McKinley died Wednesday, April 18, 2001.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Larry) Carlson, Jacqueline (Gerald) Smith and Debbie (Tim) Bradach; sons John, David (Sally) and Greg Hirsch; a brother; two sisters; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today with 7 p.m. rosary recitation in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home. Service at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John's Catholic Church, Biwabik. Burial in Gilbert cemetery.

Leroy E. "Roy" Knott
Leroy E. "Roy" Knott, 93, of Grand Rapids, died Friday, April 13, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
He was born Dec. 26, 1907, in Calumet City, Ill. He attended the Illinois Institute of Technology and worked as a tool engineer for ElectroMotive Division of General Motors in LaGrange, Ill.

He and his wife, Lorabell, moved to Warba in 1945 when they purchased Knotty Pines Resort on Shallow Lake. He went into the insurance business in 1949 as an agent for Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York and started with State Farm Insurance Co. in 1954, retiring to Shallow Lake in 1972. They moved to Grand Rapids in April 1992 and he had lived at Pleasant Seasons since March 2000.

Roy was a past president of the Cap Baker Lions Club, president of the Grand Rapids Chapter, Izaac Walton League of America, president of Minnesota State IWLA and vice-president and national director of IWLA. He was a member and past president of the Grand Rapids Garden Club and past president of District 8 Minnesota Horticulture Society. He was also a member and past master of Itasca Lodge 208 AF & AM, member and past high priest of Pokegama Chapter 102 Royal Arch Masons, a member of Elkanah Commandry, Knight Templar, Aad Temple Shrine and North Star Shrine Club. He was a charter member and past president of Itasca Chapter AARP and a member of Community Presbyterian Church, Grand Rapids, where he served as an elder and deacon.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Lorabell, on Dec. 15, 1992.

He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Jo Nicholls of Davenport, Wash.; a grandson, Steven Shroder of Spokane, Wash.; three great-grandsons; and special friends, Norma Bilyeu and Alberta Lehn, both of Grand Rapids.
Masonic service: 10:45 a.m. Friday followed by 11 a.m. memorial service in Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids. Memorials to the Community Presbyterian Church and the Grand Rapids Garden Club. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, (218) 326-4000.

Harold Arthur Skoog
Harold Arthur Skoog, 80, of Marysville, Ohio, died Monday, April 16, 2001.
He was born in Little Falls, Minn. He worked as a mechanic at the Erie Mine in Hoyt Lakes until he retired in June 1982. He lived in Rogers, Ark., for 12 years before moving to Marysville in 1998.

Harold was a member of the First English Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anita (Strauch); his sons and their families, Arthur and Mona Skoog and Jennifer, Raymond and Jeffrey, of Eagle River, Alaska; and Neil and Elizabeth Skoog and Erik, Ross and Helene, of Ostrander, Ohio; nieces; nephews, cousins; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A celebration of life service: 6:30 p.m. today in First English Lutheran Church, Marysville, the Rev. Richard Genzman officiating.

Roland "Fitty" Aiken
Roland "Fitty" Aiken, 67, of Red Cliff, Wis., a member of the Fond du Lac Tribe, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in his residence.
Fitty was born April 17, 1933, in Bayfield, the son of Henry A. and Margaret (Goslin) Aiken. He was a self-employed carpenter. He was an Army veteran serving during the Korean war.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and seven sisters.

Fitty is survived by a sister, Cynthia (Eugene) Defoe of Red Cliff and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial feast will take place at 11 a.m. Friday in the Red Cliff Community Center, Red Cliff. All are invited. A private family memorial service to be held on Madeline Island at a later date. The Mountain Funeral Home, Ashland, Bayfield and Mellen, Wisc., is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ily Hietala
Ily Hietala, 86, formerly of Nashwauk died Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Grand Rapids.
Born Nov. 17, 1914, in Gilbert, she was the daughter of Hjalmer and Hilma (Leijo) Walo. She was a 1934 graduate of Keewatin High School and had lived in the Buck Lake area prior to moving to Nashwauk in the early 1980s. Ily and Eino Hietala were married on Sept. 11, 1939, in Coleraine.

Ily was a homemaker and a member of the Nashwauk Golden Agers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hjalmer and Hilma Walo; her husband, Eino in 1999; and a brother, Arvo.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Jean Lamke of Virginia; a niece, Kathleen (Steven) Skadsem and family of Grand Rapids; three step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elsie Walo of Grand Rapids.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine, the Rev. Jan Barker officiating. Interment in Nashwauk cemetery.
