Alice Harriet Lehto
Alice Harriet Lehto, 75, of Cloquet, formerly of Scanlon, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 20, 1925, in Cloquet to William and Ida (Broughton) Coleman. Alice was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, in 1991; and a daughter, Sharon Erkkila in 1993.

Alice is survived by her children, Billy (Linda) of Las Vegas and Denise (Dwayne) Hilton of Cloquet; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her sister, Bernice Wolf of Cloquet.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Saturday in Wefelmeyer-Handevidt Funeral Home, 1506 Washington Ave., Cloquet. (218) 879-6741. Private interment in Maple Grove cemetery, Cloquet.

Patricia A. Crandall
Patricia A. Crandall, 80, of Carlton died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 25, 1920, in Carlton to Mogan and Mercedes (Walton) McClay. She graduated from Carlton High School and was the first Carlton High School homecoming queen. Patricia was united in marriage to Millard Crandall in Carlton on Sept. 5, 1942.

She was a member of J.M. Paine Memorial Presbyterian Church in Carlton. She enjoyed square dancing, golfing, spending winters in Arizona and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Millard; sons Mick (Mary) Crandall of St. Paul and Kerry (Julie) Crandall of Cloquet; a daughter, Mary LaDean of Maple Grove and her former husband, Scott LaDean; and grandchildren Ryan, Jayson, Shane and KariAnn Crandall and Britany LaDean.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Monday in Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet, and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in J.M. Paine Memorial Presbyterian Church, Carlton, the Rev. Loren Nelson officiating. Interment service follows at Hillside cemetery, Carlton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.

Darcie Lee Guentzel
Darcie Lee Guentzel, 29, of Grand Rapids passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
She is survived by a son Dustin; a daughter, Jenna; her parents, Helen Guentzel and Dale (Pam Judkins) Guentzel; siblings Pamela Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, Tammy Long, Dawn Fulciniti, Dianna Frechette and Dale N. Guentzel.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Monday and 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Tuesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 613 NW First Ave., Grand Rapids. Burial in Hope Lutheran cemetery, Floodwood. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Jeanne V. Schra
Jeanne V. Schra, 71, of Fairborn, Ohio, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Wright Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 15, 1929, in Crosby, the daughter of Eino and Violet (Fredrickson) Koski. She was a retired home economics teacher at Northwestern Middle School. She was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Victor Maki; and a brother, Dennis Maki.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Carl Schra (retired lientenant colonel, USAF); daughters Laura L. (Robert) Dilley of Clermont, Fla., Lisa L. Schra of San Francisco and Carla (Ben) Soltisz of Clarkston, Mich.; sons David C. Schra of Elmyra, Pa., and Steven J. Schra of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Maryls Vranesh of Riverside. Calif.; grandchildren Sara E. Davidson, Megan C. Schra, Benjamin J., Carl J. and David J. Soltisz, and Michael and Daniel Schra; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service 3 p.m. Saturday in St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 7128 Stine Road, Enon, Ohio. Arrangements by Burcham Funeral Home, 119 E. Main Street, Fairborn, Ohio.

Wallace H. Eck
Wallace H. Eck, 83, of Eveleth died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Arrowhead Health Care Center, Eveleth.
He was born Dec. 21, 1917, in Gonvick, Minn., to Oscar and Alice (Skime) Eck and had lived there until moving to Eveleth in 1953. Mr. Eck was employed in the construction trade.

He was a member of Building Construction Labors Local 1097 of Virginia, Makinen Senior Citizens, CCC, and the Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick.

Wallace was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Grace, in 1957; a son, Willard; his granddaughter, Christine; his second wife, Lila Mae, in 1993; and a brother, Russell.

He is survived by his sons, LeRoy (Vickie) Eck of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Phillip (Eleanor) Eck and Raymond (Joanne) Eck, both of Eveleth, William (Donna) Eck of Wabun, Minn., and Richard (Terri) Eck of Wolsey, S.D.; stepsons Dale (Chris) Gjerde of St. Paul and Glen (Cindy) Gjerde of Lake Elmo; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; brothers Lester (Irene) Eck of Great Falls, Mont., and Charles (Lois) Eck of Gonvick; and a special friend, Emma Ryan of Hibbing.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Landmark Funeral Home, Virginia, and continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in United Christ Lutheran Church, Eveleth, the Rev. Daniel L. Johns officiating. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial in Samhold Lutheran Church cemetery, Gonvick.

Bertha Elizabeth Hongisto
Bertha Elizabeth Hongisto, 85, of Cloquet died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Community Memorial Nursing Home in Cloquet.
She was born June 5, 1915, in Knife Falls Township, Minn., to Frans and Ester (Esteros) Laine. She married Elmer Hongisto on Dec. 14, 1935, in Cloquet. Bertha was the secretary for Hongisto Truck and Implement for many years. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Esko. She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening, traveling, having made numerous trips to Finland and fishing trips to Paradise Point in Canada.

Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; a daughter, Arlene Michaelson; brothers Eino Laine and Oscar Laine Jr.; sisters Martha Kadel, Elma Paulson and Ester Pease.

She is survived by her daughters, Alice Nopola of Richfield, Minn., Janet (Reuben) Tangren of Faribault, Minn., and Barbara (Roland) Lovstad of Columbia, Ill.; her son, James (Carol) Hongisto of Wrenshall; a son-in-law, Richard Michaelson of Esko; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, and from 2 until the 3 p.m. memorial service Saturday in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 1 Elizabeth Ave., Esko. David M. Sheldon
David M. Sheldon, 84, of Hibbing passed from this life Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Lawnwood Medical Center in Fort Pierce, Fla.
He was born April 30, 1916, in Penopscot, Minn., the son of Joseph and Florence Sheldon. He was a 1935 graduate of Hibbing High School. He attended Hibbing Junior College and graduated from Dunwoody Technical School, majoring in electronics.

He entered active duty in the Army Corps of Engineers on April 7, 1941. He was attached to the 8th Air Force in England. He was in the 852 Engineers Aviation Battalion. He was also in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns, receiving EAME Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon and Victory Medal. He left active duty as a captain and was honorably discharged in March 1946. He resumed work with the Oliver Mining Company. He was a foreman in the Sherman Mine, Pilot Tac and Minntac Mine, retiring in 1977.

David married Alvina Wilson on Aug. 29, 1941, in the Wesley United Methodist Church in Hibbing, where he was also an active member serving in various capacities.

He was a licensed pilot and flew extensively throughout the country. He was also an avid sailor and spent many years sailing in the Caribbean with his wife on their boat "Delia." He spent his last 15 years wintering in Vero Beach and Fort Pierce, Fla. He enjoyed being with his family and friends. David was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Florence Sheldon; his wife, Alvina; and a brother, Douglas.

He is survived by his companion, Mildred; a son, David (Linda) of Hibbing; grandchildren Dean, Jim and Jessica; a brother, Joseph (Eleanor) Sheldon; sisters Janet Sheldon of Minneapolis and Phyllis McComber of Hibbing; and nieces Tracey McComber and Erin Shavor.

Florence J. "Flata" Milos
Florence J. "Flata" Milos, 75, of Biwabik died Tuesday, April 10, 2001.
She is survived by a sister, Katherine Steblay; a brother, Francis Milos; sisters-in-law Helen Milos and Sarah Milos; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Gilbert. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in St. John's Catholic Church, Biwabik, the Rev. Frank Perkovich as celebrant. Burial in Lakeside cemetery, Biwabik.

Kenneth A. Soukkala Jr.
Kenneth A. Soukkala Jr., 33, of Sawyer died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Sawyer.
He was born Jan. 6, 1968, in Duluth to Kenneth and Myrtle "Sue" (Greensky) Soukkala. Kenny attended school in Carlton and Fond du Lac. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Fond du Lac and Soukkala Trucking.

Kenny loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed playing pool and weight lifting. He competed and won first place in many benching competitions around the area and made it look easy. Kenny's main priority was his children which he loved very much.

He was preceded in death by grandmothers Helen Michaelson and Edith Enger; grandfathers Arthur Soukkala and Jacob Greensky; a brother, Larry; a great-uncle, Henry Soukkala Jr.; and his stepmother, Doris Soukkala.

Kenny is survived by his children Brian, Brock and Brandy Soukkala; his mother, Myrtle "Sue" Soukkala of Sawyer; his father, Kenneth Soukkala Sr. of Sawyer; his grandmother, Katherine Olson of Sawyer, sisters Crystal (Brandon Pederson) Soukkala of Duluth, Debbie (Lance) Harkins of Cloquet and Becky Everson of Trimble, Tenn.; brothers Sean (Shannon), Todd (Penny), Bruce (Shannon), all of Cloquet, Bradley and Jim, both of Duluth, Robert of McHenry, Ill., and William of Helena, Mont.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation: 5 p.m. Wednesday until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Sawyer Center, Mission Road, Sawyer. Interment in Sawyer cemetery. Arrangements by Barr Brothers-Handevidt Funeral Home, Cloquet, MN 55720, (218) 879-4636.

Marjorie O. Wood, 85, of Willow River died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in her home.
She was born March 6, 1916, in Blue Earth County to Herman and Agnes (Barber) Beccue.
