John P. Grahek
John P. Grahek, 79, of Ely died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in his home in Ely.
He was born March 17, 1922, in Ely to Joseph and Anna (Peshel) Grahek. John was an Army veteran of World War II. He began working at Pioneer Mine in Ely and later for USX Minntac in Mountain Iron. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Ely and was an avid fisherman who loved his home and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a sister.

Survivors include his wife Janet; a daughter, Darlene (Richard) Grugal of Maple Grove, Minn.; a son, Jon (Eileen) Grahek of St. Cloud, Minn.; grandchildren Ashley and Andy Grahek; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Mass: 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ely, Father James Scheuer as celebrant. Inurnment in Fort Snelling National cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.

Mary Elizabeth Sterns Kibbler
Mary Elizabeth Sterns Kibbler, 93, of Boy River, Minn., died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Grand Rapids.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m. Sunday and service 11 a.m. Monday, all in Zion Lutheran Church, Boy River. Burial in Zion Lutheran Island cemetery.

Bryon D. Neal
Bryon D. Neal, 18, of Aurora was found dead Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in Virginia after being reported missing for nearly a week.
Survivors include his mother, Lisa Buatala of Aurora; his father, Carl Neal of Indiana; stepfather, John Buatala; sons Brent and Preston; brothers Chris and Dustin Neal; sisters Autumn and Cassandra Buatala; grandmother, Ollie Neal; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m. Sunday and service 11 a.m. Monday, all in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery, Aurora.

Warren Hazelton
Warren Hazelton, 84, of Greensburg, Pa., and formerly of Aitkin died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Pittsburgh.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Pine Lake Chapel. Arrangements by Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

Floyd L. Padgett
Floyd L. Padgett, 71, of Buhl died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in Fairview University Medical Center, Hibbing.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass Tuesday in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Buhl. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Buhl. Military rites accorded by Yoki-Berman American Legion Post 220. Arrangements by Range Funeral Home, Virginia.

Nick Napoli
Nick Napoli, 84, of Hibbing died Saturday, March 7, 2001.
He is survived by daughters Marilyn (Joseph) Biondi, Jonelle (Gerald) Krause and Susan (Robert) Fryckman; a son, James Napoli; two brothers; a sister; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 10-11:45 a.m. Tuesday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. Service at noon Tuesday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery.

Jonathan Scot Rowe
Jonathan Scot Rowe, 46, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center because of an accident while teaching a forestry class in Grand Rapids High School.
He was born Dec. 28, 1954, in Gaylord, Minn., to Herbert and Frances (Melinsky) Rowe. He married Christel Haynes on July 16, 1983, in Nashwauk Lutheran Church in Nashwauk. Their daughters are Kathryn (Katie) and Alyson, at home, and honorary daughter, Nina Becker in Switzerland. Jon attended public schools in Howard Lake, Rochester and graduated from Hibbing High School. He graduated from Hibbing Community College, attended the University of Minnesota Duluth and graduated from the University of Minnesota-St. Paul campus, obtaining a bachelor's degree in forestry. Later, he earned his Agricultural Education degree from the University of Minnesota-St. Paul campus. In 1994 he was awarded his master's degree in education from the Arrowhead University System.

Jon began teaching agriculture classes at Montevideo High School in 1980. He then moved to Grand Rapids in 1986, where he had taught Natural Resources, Forestry, Practical Forestry, Water Resources, Horticulture and related courses up until the present. He coached many teams of young people over the years for Future Foresters Of Minnesota, many of which competed at the state level. Over the years, he had pioneered the development and delivery of natural resources teaching curriculum nationwide. He had received many grants and awards for his teaching achievements, including being honored as Minnesota Forest Industries State Forest Educator of the Year, grades 9-12, in 1999.

He was an active member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, serving as president of the congregation as well as being involved in numerous committees and singing in the men's choir. He was an instrumental leader, promoting stewardship of natural resources by teaching students how to sample and evaluate water quality in the Mississippi Headwaters Organization. In 1996 he lead an exchange team to Russia that spread awareness of resource stewardship by launching river water sampling and testing programs. Jon received the Headwaters Heritage Award in 1991. Last fall, the Grand Rapids River Watch awarded him a commendation for his service to the organization. He was active in Wabana Chain of Lakes organization for which he served as president, vice president and member of the advisory board.

He was a beloved son, husband, father, brother, friend and teacher, and will be dearly missed by those who loved him. He would wish his legacy to be continued by those who he has taught, loved and served.
Public Visitation: 4-7 p.m. today in St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids. Visitation continues 3 until the 4 p.m. service in the Reif Center, Grand Rapids. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Phillip A. Nelson
Phillip A. Nelson, 80, of Biwabik died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home in Duluth, following an extensive illness.
He was born Sept. 12, 1920, to Carl and Olive Nelson in Crosby. He lived most of his life on the Iron Range. He graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School in 1938 and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in New Guinea. He married Priscilla Jean Wahlstrom in 1947 in Grand Rapids. He worked for Lerch Brothers as an ore analyst for 25 years and a lab supervisor for Eveleth Taconite for 20 years, retiring in 1980.

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carl M.; a sister, Lois VanKleek; an infant brother, Malcolm Vernon; and an infant granddaughter, Betsy Jane Brotherton.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters Susan (Peter) Marczak of Antigo, Wis., Diane J. Rauschenfels of Proctor and Jill (Larry) Brotherton of Aliso Viego, Calif.; a brother Donald (Dede) of Hibbing; sisters Evelyn (Ken) Johnson of Deerwood, Minn., and Elaine (George) Herbst of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and grandchildren Michelle (Nathan) Fields of Valparaiso, Ind., Brian Marczak, Christopher and Andrew Rauschenfels, and Kate, Phillip and Melissa Brotherton.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

William J. O'Brien
William J. O'Brien, 86, longtime resident of Hibbing, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in his home.
He was born Nov. 18, 1914, in Hibbing, the son of William L. and Virginia (Cousineau) O'Brien. He was a 1935 graduate of Hibbing High School and also attended college in Bemidji. He was married to Everal M. Schmidt Feb. 5, 1937.

William worked as a locomotive engineer at U.S. Steel Corp. for 43 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Hibbing. A veteran of World War II, William served in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps. He was a member of VFW Post 8510 in Hibbing and the Hibbing Figure Skating Club. He was a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 1, earning many scouting and citizen awards. William also enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing cribbage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Reutiman; and a grandson, Spencer O'Brien.

William is survived by his wife of 64 years, Everal; a son, William "Pete" (Linda) O'Brien of Hibbing; a daughter, Katherine V. (John) Reid of Norfolk, Va.; grandchildren Danielle (James) Riccio, Trevor O'Brien, Kevin Reid and Shawn Reid; a sister, Constance (Tony) Constantini; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Monday in Blessed Sacrament Church, Hibbing, the Rev. Father James Hauver officiating. Inurnment in Hibbing Park (Maple Hill) cemetery. Serona Janet Slotness
Serona Janet Slotness, 92, of Knife River passed away Monday, April 9, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, after a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 15, 1908, to William "W.T." and Anna (Brandt) Kendall in Superior. She was the proprietor of Russ Kendall's Smoke House in Knife River for many years and after retiring spent time visiting homebound friends and family with her husband, Lyman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyman, in 1994; brothers Lowell and Earl; and a sister, Lorna Masse.

She is survived by a brother, Russell Kendall of Knife River; a sister, Jean Webb, of Ordmond Beach, Fla.; and 18 nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Lake View Cottages, Two Harbors, for their care in the past two years.
Memorial service will take place in July. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Isabelle Shantz
Isabelle Shantz, 85, of Sturgeon Lake passed away in her daughter's arms Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake.
She was born Feb. 11, 1916, in Ironwood, Mich., to Theophle and Stella (Roszak) Drazkowski. In 1929, Isabelle moved to Duluth. She was a cook for St. John's Catholic School in Duluth. Isabelle was also a former owner of the Normanna Inn in the Island Lake area, north of Duluth.

She truly loved cooking, gardening, fishing, crocheting, berry picking and making crafts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Loran Shantz; her parents; six brothers; and five sisters.

Isabelle will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Lois (Dick) Summers of Sturgeon Lake and her children, James Summers, Linda (Dan) Jensen, Rick (Joan) Summers, Sue (Dean) Paulson and Ron Summers; her son, Robert (Lois) Schneider of Mesa, Ariz., and his children, Korey (Lynette) Schneider, Keith (Julie) Schneider, Kevin (Mary) Schneider, Kenny (Renee) Schneider, Kelly (Chris) Schneider and Kyle (Jessica) Schneider; and 22 great-grandchildren.
A gathering of family and friends: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial mass Monday in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Moose Lake, the Rev. Michael Hayes as celebrant. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.
