Michael Alan Brown, premature infant son, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
He is survived by father and mother, Jeremy and Vicki (Larson) Brown of Silver Bay; grandparents Al and Susan Larson of Silver Bay and Mike and Teri Klinker of Finland; great-grandparents Lois Larson of Silver Bay, Guy and Lorraine Nordberg of LaCrescent, Minn., Caroline Klinker of Finland and Cloyee Brown of Oregon; and aunt Dawn Harkness of Beaver Bay.

Elaine R. Carlson
Elaine R. Carlson, 78, of Grand Rapids died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in North Memorial Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla.
She was born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, to John and Rose Inrig. She grew up and attended school in Kitchener and served in the United States Navy in World War II. She married Kenneth J. Carlson Sr. in 1945. They moved to Grand Rapids in 1946.

Elaine was a member of the Itasca Medical Center Auxiliary and Grace Bible Chapel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken in March 2000.

Elaine is survived by children Ken (Karen) Carlson of Grand Rapids, Dr. Ted Carlson of Seattle and Dr. Nancy (Larry) Carlson of Mahtomedi, Minn.; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday in Libbey Funeral Home Chapel. Service at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Grace Bible Chapel. Burial in Harris Township cemetery, Grand Rapids. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home.

Ethel D. Leisen
Ethel D. Leisen, 61, of Hibbing died Tuesday, April 10, 2001.
She is survived by a daughter, Katherine R. Leisen; two sisters; five brothers; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank Burton Sr.
Frank Burton Sr., 91, of Two Harbors died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in his home.
He was born March 13, 1910, in the Ozarks, Licking County, Mo.

He is survived by sons and daughters; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and a niece.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 1 until the 2:30 p.m. service Friday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors.

Sue Ann Krunkkala
Sue Ann Krunkkala, 37, of Ely died suddenly Sunday, April 8, 2001, after a courageous fight with cancer.
She was born Sept. 6, 1963, in Ely to John and Dorothy (Zavodnik) Spielhagen. In July 1985 she married Jim Krunkkala. She was one of the original employees of Irresistible Ink in Ely and enjoyed her job where she had many good friends. Sue's hobbies were needlepoint, crocheting and reading. She was an avid supporter of her children in all they did, never missing a baseball or hockey game.

Sue will be forever loved, forever missed and forever remembered.

She was preceded in death by her father, John; her grandfather, Anthony Zavodnik; and her grandmother, Mary Spielhagen.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; sons Bryan Spielhagen, Daniel, Michael and Andrew Krunkkala; and a daughter, Kelsie Krunkkala, all at home; her mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Sandy Ersbo; three sisters; her maternal grandmother; an uncle; three aunts; several nieces and nephews; her mother-in-law; many brothers and sisters-in-law; and a very special lifelong friend, Heidi Hanson.

Harriet C. Gross
Harriet C. Gross, 86, of Cloquet passed away Monday, April 9, 2001, in Cloquet Nursing Home.
She was born April 11, 1914, in Cloquet to John and Rose (Anderson) Andrews. Harriet retired from Cloquet Memorial Hospital after 13 years as a baker and a cook. She enjoyed knitting and loved her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Bert John Gross in 1973; and her husband, Norman, in 1983.

She is survived by children Norma (Daniel) Glatt of South Chicago Heights, Ill., Lola "Sue" (Roy) Davis of Phoenix and Bruce (Karen) Gross of Coon Rapids, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Thursday and noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday in Barr Brothers-Handevidt Funeral Home, 900 Washington Ave., Cloquet, (218) 879-4636. Private interment in Hillcrest cemetery.

Lynell Lammi
Lynell Lammi, 64, of Kettle River passed away Monday, April 9, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
She was born to Harry and Belinda (Kayrasvupio) Robinson on Dec. 10, 1936, in Deadwood, S.D. Lynell attended and graduated from Lead High School in 1955. She fulfilled her goal to become a registered nurse by graduating from Bethesda Hospital and School of Nursing in St. Paul in 1958. Her good fortune continued and she married Wilbert Lammi on Aug. 23, 1958. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother to nine grandchildren.

Lynell was active within her community as well. She was den mother for Cub Scouts, a 4-H leader for over 10 years and a youth hockey supporter and booster. She was especially supportive of the AFS program as a volunteer and host family. Lynell loved her quilting and being a member of the local quilting club. She enjoyed sharing and giving these projects of love to others more than anything else. Besides quilting, she enjoyed cross-stitch and other sewing projects. She was devoted to and loved her grandchildren. She enjoyed holding them as babies, nurturing them as they grew and supporting them wherever she could. As a grandmother, she will be sorely missed. Lynell gave unselfishly of herself to her neighbors in Minnesota and to her neighbors and friends in Arizona and around the world.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Wilbert Lammi; children Mike (Sharon Gorney) Lammi of Arden Hills, Minn., Paula (Alan) Benson of Champlin, Minn., John (Molly) Lammi of Volberg, Mont., and Krista (Mark) Fraase of Champlin, Minn.; grandchildren Jack, Jamaica, Sierra, Alex, Kyra, Kendra, Justin, Jessica and Holden; siblings Beverly (Wayne) Cowling of Lander, Wyo., Colleen (Jim Kraemer) Meyers of Hill City, S.D., and Jim (Margie) Robinson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; nieces and nephews Bill, Lori, John, Kevin, Tammy, Michelle, Kelly, Georgia, Anna and Bryant; host children and surrogate grandchildren Carina and son from Sweden, Joana from Portugal and Jose and daughter in Honduras; and other family members and friends.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Friday in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake, Pastor Mark Stillman officiating. Burial in St. Peter's cemetery, Silver Township, Minn., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Julia Elvera Waller
Julia Elvera Waller, 77, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, after a long kidney illness.
She was born April 26, 1923, to Victor and Manda (Sundberg) Johnson in Spalding Township, Minn. She married Clifford Waller Dec. 19, 1942, and they moved to Portland, Ore., and later returned to Minnesota. After Cliff's retirement, they moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1972.

Julia enjoyed crafts, crocheting, fishing and her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford in 1987; a 38-year-old step grandson in 1995; and a brother, Alfred Johnson.

She is survived by her stepson, Wayne Waller of Saginaw; her stepdaughter, Janice Brady of Bensenville, Ill; five step-grandchildren; brothers Ray Johnson of Spokane, Wash., and Walter Johnson of McGregor; and sisters Lydia Hoel of Minneapolis, Elna Mapes of Hawarden, Iowa, and Helen Phillips of Coeur d'Alene.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday on the cemetery grounds of Sunrise Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum, Miller Truck Hwy., Route 53 and Arrowhead Road, Hermantown. Inurnment 9 a.m. Monday at Sunrise Memorial Park. A previous memorial service was held in Coeur d'Alene March 24, 2001, for her family and friends there.

Beatrice M. Scharf
Beatrice M. Scharf, 82, of Brainerd, formerly of Coleraine died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in Brainerd.
She was born July 10, 1918, in Calumet to William and Laura (Hoshal) White. She was a graduate of Greenway High School and Duluth State Teachers College. Beatrice lived most of her life in Coleraine. Following her retirement, she had lived in the Warba area and Tucson, Ariz.

Beatrice and Robert Mandich were married in 1947. Beatrice was a kindergarten teacher in Balsam and Grand Rapids schools for 36 years. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Warba, a former member of Coleraine Presbyterian Church and Holy Way Presbyterian Church in Tucson. Beatrice and Baldwin "Bob" Scharf were married in 1981.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Laura White; her first husband, Robert Mandich in 1972; her second husband, Baldwin "Bob" Scharf in 2000; brothers Roy, Ray, Donald, Lawrence, Robert and Stanley; and a sister, Almina Colvin.

She is survived by her daughters Diane Moyer of Duluth and Melanie (Richard) Quillin of Brainerd; sons Daniel Mandich of San Jose, Calif., and Robert Mandich; stepdaughters Darlene (Earl) Linville of Spring Hill, Fla., and LeAnne Jenkins of Faribault, Minn.; stepsons DuWayne (Sandy) Scharf of Rochester, Minn., and Ric Scharf of Minneapolis; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers Clarence (Gladys) White of Puyallup, Wash., Richard (Joanne) White of Coleraine and Ronald (Linda) White of Phoenix, Ariz.; and sisters Dorothy Peterson of rural Bovey and Pearl Belland of Minneapolis.
Service: 11 a.m. Thursday in Bethel Lutheran Church, Warba, the Rev. Loren Anderson-Bauer officiating. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine. Arrangements by Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine.

Nettie R. Kaczor
Nettie R. Kaczor, 97, of Grand Rapids died Monday, April 2, 2001, in Grand Rapids.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday with 7 p.m. rosary in Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River. Service 11 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church, Bigfork. Burial in Bigfork cemetery. Arrangements by Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River.

Joseph J. Ballek
Joseph J. Ballek, 69, of Grand Rapids died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in his home.
He is survived by a son, Jeff Ballek of St. Anthony, Minn.; two sisters; and a grandson, Steven Ballek.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids. Burial with full military honors in Harris cemetery, Harris Township, Minn. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.
