Mary (Mae) E. Folz
Mary (Mae) E. Folz, 94, of Ely died Monday, April 2, 2001, in Ely Bloomenson Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 23, 1907, in Albany, Minn., to Michael and Mary (Muellner) Tschida. On Aug. 24, 1924, she was united in marriage to Henry (Hank) Stephen Folz. Mae was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Catholic Council of Women. She worked for many years in Edna's Cafe and then the Piggly Wiggly store in Ely.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hank in 1955; brothers Matt and Lawrence Tschida; a sister, Barbara Skelton; and a son, Joseph Folz.
She is survived by a daughter, Marie Heidenricht of Chicago; sons Jon and Jim Folz, both of Ely, and Jacob M. Folz of Port Hadlock, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ray Tschida of Little Falls, Minn.
Memorial service at a later date. Burial will be in Ely cemetery. Arrangements by Landmark Funeral Home, Virginia.

Earle J. Madden Jr., 68, of Wuori Township died Thursday, March 29, 2001.

Impi M. Arvola, 91, of Embarrass died Monday, April 2, 2001, in Golden Crest Nursing Home in Hibbing.

Donald W. Cole
Donald W. Cole, 80, of Babbitt died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in his home.
He was born Sept. 6, 1920, in Minneapolis to John W. and Irene (Westervelt) Cole. His family moved to Cass Lake where he attended school. Don enlisted for service during World War II and became a Navy pilot, serving in the South Pacific. He married
Muriel Church in 1946. In 1952, they moved to Babbitt where Don worked for Reserve Mining Co., retiring after 30 years.
Don was active in community services for Babbitt, having served as mayor and as coach for Little League and youth hockey. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW, both in Babbitt.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Muriel; daughters Colleen (Lyle) Wick of Hugo, Minn., and Candice (Jeffrey) Woods of Litchfield, Minn.; sons John (Janis) of Park Falls, Wis., Thomas (Holly) of Litchfield, Calvin (Sharon) of Princeton, Minn., and Patrick of Hibbing; brothers Melvin Cole of Excelsior, Minn., and Frank (Betty) Cole of Forest Lake, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday in Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely. Funeral mass at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Pius X Catholic Church, Babbitt. Spring burial in Argo cemetery, Babbitt.
Effie C. Carlson
Effie C. Carlson, 99, of Virginia died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in the Arrowhead Health Care Center in Virginia.
She was born Dec. 30, 1901, in Calumet, the daughter of Alexander and Anna (Jackola) Onkka. She married
Frank N. Carlson on Oct. 23, 1922, in Virginia, and was a longtime Virginia resident.
She was an active member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church and a member of a number of its organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1966; her son, James in 1943; her daughter, Virginia M. Eskola in 1994; two sisters; and five brothers.
She is survived by sons Donald A. (Marzy) Carlson of Virginia and John B. (Delores) Carlson of Duluth; daughters Barbara A. Sikkila of East Grand Forks, Minn., and Elaine C. (James) Hart of Bradenton, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Celebration of life service: noon April 21, 2001, in Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church, Virginia, the Rev. Clarence Schaffner officiating. Inurnment in Greenwood cemetery, Virginia. Vernon O. Knutson, 69, of Eveleth died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Knutson; sons Mike (Anni), Greg (Pam), Dave (Lori) and Don (Dottie) Knutson; 10 grandchildren; four sisters; a brother-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles E. Archer, 88, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Chisholm, died Friday, March 30, 2001, in Phoenix.
He is survived by his wife, Fern, whom he married
on June 24, 1939.

Robert Harry Spieler
Robert Harry Spieler, 74, of Moose Lake died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in his winter residence in Okeechobee, Fla.
He was born May 18, 1926, in Cedar Lake, Ind. Mr. Spieler had been a winter resident of Okeechobee since 1980. He attended the Peace Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing, dancing, woodworking, orange trees and remodeling homes.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Connie L. Spieler; a sister; and four brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Spieler of Minnesota and Okeechobee; sons Kenneth S. Spieler of Cloquet, Dennis D. Comfort of Duluth, Richard D. (Cinda) Spieler of Hendrum, Minn., and Jeffrey D. (Mary) Comfort of Mesa, Ariz., daughters Randi J. (Isaac) Pakula of Wilson N.C., and Connie F. Hennum of Esko; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brothers Raymond Spieler of Minong, Wis., and Emil Spieler of Okeechobee.

Dana Kathleen Carter, 63, of Waite Park, Minn., formerly of Cotton, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in Winter Park.
Dana was born in Duluth to Laverne and Kathleen (Sheff) Carlson. She lived in Cotton for most of her life, graduating from Cotton High School. She attended the University of Minnesota Minneapolis and was postmaster in Cotton until 1991, when she moved to Avon, Minn., as postmaster there, retiring in January 2000 after 29 years with the Postal Service.
Dana was a member of Cotton Community Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of Cotton Ladies Aid and Cotton PTO. She was a Girl Scout leader and served as master of ceremonies at the Minnesota Fiddle Contest.
While in Avon she was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in St. Joseph, Minn. She also was a member of National Association of Postmasters of the United States, where she served as career development chairwoman for four years. She served as vice president of Duluth area of NAPUS and was co-chairwoman of Minnesota Room for the National Convention in Minneapolis in 2000 and was also on the Quality of Life team. While in Winter Park, she served as a volunteer for several organizations.
Dana was an avid skier. She loved music, traveling, dancing and the outdoors. Most of all, she loved being with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph L. Carter; and a brother, Terry Carlson.
She is survived by her son, Terry (Connie) Carter of Twig; daughters Darcy Carter of Greensboro, N.C., and Kathy (Pat) Kiley of Upsala, Minn.; brothers Dave (Arlene) Carlson of Gilbert and Steve Carlson of Cotton; grandchildren Joe, Jake, Eliza, Sarah, Erik and Jaret; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4:30-7 p.m. today in Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth. Visitation continues 1 until the 2 p.m. service Friday in Cotton Community Church. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Cotton.

Arthur J. Durand, 85, of Hoyt Lakes died Tuesday, April 3, 2001.
He is survived by his best friend, Eleanore Ledin.
