Alvina Caldwell
Alvina Caldwell passed away peacefully Friday, March 2, 2001, in Shreveport, La.
She was born Nov. 26, 1924, on the Chippewa Reservation in Fond Du Lac, Minn. Mrs. Caldwell retired from the VA Hospital as a registered nurse after 17 years of service. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.
Mrs. Caldwell was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Bernard T. Caldwell.
She is survived by her children, Arleen (John) Heyd of Minnesota, Patricia Rasch of Washington, Phyllis (James) Stott of Minnesota, Janis (Dave Fuhst) Fairbanks of Michigan, Ralph Fairbanks of Minnesota, Gary Joe Fairbanks of Minnesota, Jerry (Elaine) Fairbanks of Shreveport and Janet (Link Burns) Abney of Bossier City ; a sister, Margaret Robinson; brothers Richard, Albert and Robert Robinson; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Alvina was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Throughout the last several years of her illnesses, her kindness and unselfish nature never failed. This is the legacy she has left to her children.
Services were March 5 in the chapel of Boone Funeral Home. Interment in Roseneath cemetery. Pallbearers were John Heyd, James Stott, John Roterman, Link Burns, Paul Fjone and David Fuhst. Honorary pallbearer was David Fairbanks.

Eric O. Long, 87, of Cook died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Cook Nursing Home.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Aune; a son, Leon (Katy) of Cook; a daughter, Paulette (Ron) Rosenlund of Battle Ground, Wash.; sisters Mary Toivari of Eveleth and Eva Williams of Albuquerque, N.M.; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

William C. Hudson, 73, of Aitkin died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in his home.

Dorothy Nelson
Dorothy Nelson, 70, of Sturgeon Lake died Monday, March 5, 2001, in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake.
She is survived by her husband, Curtis; sons Robert, James (Billie) and David; a daughter, Margery (Tom) Hirdler; eight grandchildren; and many other relatives.

Clinton "Nick" Shermer
Clinton "Nick" Shermer, 81, of Orr died Monday, March 5, 2001, in his residence.
He was born in Josie, Neb., on Feb. 2, 1920. He served in the Navy on the USS Indiana from 1942 to 1945, and was part of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Syvilla Hall May 25, 1946, in Burwell, Neb. They have lived in Northeastern Minnesota the past 42 years. Nick was a school bus driver for the St. Louis County School District and farmed for many years. He was a member of the Orr American Legion.
Nick is survived by his wife of 54 years, Syvilla; sons Dennis (Sharon) of Buhl, Clifford (Mary) of Gheen, Mark (Karen) of Angora, James (Rebecca) of Gheen and Joseph (Paula) of Cook; daughters Irene Semon of Orr, Martha "Marty" (William) Nosie and Ruth (John) Huismann, both of Gheen, and Kay (Timothy) Cornelius of Orr; a sister, Lois Bradshaw of Salinas, Calif.; 25 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Thursday in Orr American Legion Hall, the Rev. Dennis Sundeen officiating. Interment in Willow Valley Township cemetery. Arrangements by Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook.
Paul J. Sokoloski
Paul J. Sokoloski, 66, of Myrtle Lake near Orr died unexpectedly Sunday, March 4, 2001, in his residence.
He grew up in Buyck and lived in the Buyck-Orr area for his entire life. He served in the Army and was a longtime contract logger. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Orr, Orr American Legion and Lions Club.
Paul is survived by sons Sheldon (Beth) of Buyck, Jeffrey (Tina) of Crane Lake and Bradley (Koreen) of Orr; a daughter, Geraldine (Jason) Crain of Virginia; a sister, Judy (Robert) Martinson of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday and Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Orr, the Rev. Larry Antus, OMI, as celebrant. Interment in Forest Home cemetery, Buyck. military honors accorded by Orr American Legion. Arrangements by Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook.
Elsie Graham
Elsie Graham, 84, of Two Harbors died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Lake View Memorial Hospital, Two Harbors.
She was born Dec. 11, 1916, to Emil and Hilda (Bondeson) Olson in Two Harbors, where she was a lifelong resident. She enjoyed shopping, eating out with friends and had a great sense of humor.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Harry, Leonard, Morris, Herbert and Albert Olson; and a sister, Ethel Dyer.
She is survived by a son, James (Holly) of Two Harbors; daughters Barb (Dean) Gelineau of International Falls and Mary Gustafson of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including special niece Dorothy Anderson.
Service: 11 a.m. Friday in Cavallin Funeral Home. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors.
Olive Irene (Ver Steeg) Satre
Olive Irene (Ver Steeg) Satre, 86, of Hibbing died Monday, March 5, 2001, in University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.
She was born Sept. 1, 1914, in Chisholm to Jacob M. and Marie (Sippola) Mayala. She was a 1933 graduate of Hibbing High School and had lived in Hibbing-Chisholm area all her life.
She was united in marriage May 1, 1956, in Hibbing to Parnell C. Satre. She had worked as a secretary for Arrowhead Equipment in Hibbing for several years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hibbing, Daughters of the Nile, Duluth, O.E.S., Mesaba Chapter 211 of Hibbing, Elks Ladies Klub and a past member of the Mesaba Country Club of Hibbing. Olive was an avid bridge player.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Ralph "Sparky" Ver Steeg on Feb. 12, 1952,; and her second husband, Parnell C. Satre Jan. 8, 2001; a son, Ralph Ver Steeg; a brother and four sisters.
Olive is survived by a son, Dirk (Debbie) Ver Steeg of Chisholm; a grandson, Dirk II of Chisholm; a sister, Sadie Lawrence of St. Paul; and several nephews and nieces.
Visitation: 12:30 until the 1 p.m. memorial service Friday in First Presbyterian Church, Hibbing, the Rev. Brian Birk officiating. Arrangements by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Chisholm.
Mabel Sundstrom
Mabel Sundstrom, 93, formerly of Soudan died Monday, March 5, 2001, in Woodbury Health Care Center, Woodbury, Minn.
She was born Oct. 26, 1907, in Eveleth to Matt and Hilja Sivula. She attended the Duluth Normal School and taught at County School 40 until she married
Elmer Sundstrom July 25, 1931. They owned the Tower Gamble's store early in their marriage, established a home in Tower and later moved to Soudan. Mabel enjoyed gardening, entertaining and substitute teaching. She was a faithful and active member of Augustana Lutheran Church and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, both of Soudan.
Later in life she returned to the University of Minnesota Duluth to update her teaching degree and taught in the Hoyt Lakes and Aurora elementary schools until her retirement. She was a member of the Soudan Study Club and Alpha Delta Kappa teacher's sorority.
Mabel was mentioned in the nonfiction book, "Helmi Mavis: A Finnish-American Girlhood," as being a memorable teacher and had encouraged the author Mavis Hiltunen Biesanz to become a writer.
After selling her home in Soudan, Mabel lived in the Lakeview Apartments in Tower. She then moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Dennis Olson of Cottage Grove, Minn. After that she became a resident of Woodbury Health Care Center of Woodbury until the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer in 1982; a brother, Harold Sivula; and a grandson, Dennis V. Olson Jr.
Mabel is survived by daughters Lois (Kenneth) Maine of Duluth and Lorraine (Dennis) Olson of Cottage Grove; a sister, Sylvia Rewak of Santa Rosa, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Bauman's Vermilion Funeral Home Chapel, Tower and 12:30 until the 1:30 p.m. service Friday in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Soudan, the Rev. Pfeifly officiating.
