Ragna V. Salo
Ragna V. Salo, 52, of Bergstrom Junction Road, Saginaw died Monday, March 5, 2001, in her home, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born May 16, 1948, in Baltimore. She grew up in Ohio, graduating in 1966 from Yearling Whitehall High School. Ragna lived in Saginaw for the past 32 years. She was a homemaker and had received nursing assistant training at Duluth Technical College. She lived with and cared for her grandmother, Ragna Larsen, for many years until her death in 1997. Ragna was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig. She was a caring and loving mother, grandmother and friend, who cherished times with her grandchildren.

Survivors include sons Gary Kilbourn of Saginaw, Michael Kilbourn of Cloquet, Steven (Brandi) Kilbourn and Lars Salo, both of Saginaw; her mother, May (John) Stoll of Saginaw; brothers and sisters Larry Legutko of Duluth, James (Lorraine) Stoll of Chaska, Minn., Diana Armstrong of Proctor, Donna (Rick) LaDuke of Saginaw and David (Maggie) Stoll of Newport News, Va.; grandchildren Austin, Mikey, Brenna and Matthew; many nieces and nephews; and many others who affectionately called her "mom."
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday in Bell Brothers Chapel, where service is 11 a.m. Saturday, the Rev. Marshall Moen officiating. Burial in Grand Lake cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., 624-5745.

Andrew Perttula
Andrew Perttula, 92, of Esko died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 13, 1908, the son of Edward and Hannah Perttula, and was lived in Thomson Township and Esko his entire life. He was a farmer in the Esko area and had worked for the railroad for 25 years. He liked to work in the outdoors and especially enjoyed gardening. He will fondly be remembered as a very honest, hardworking man.

He was preceded in death by brothers August, Jonas, Matt and Fred and sisters Hilda Tero, Saima Gustafson and Ida Jolk.

Andrew is survived by his wife of 69 years, Fannie of Esko; a son, Marlen (Kay) Perttula of Cloquet; daughters Eileen (Joseph) Chartier and Diane (David) Palmer, both of Cloquet; a sister, Olga Ikola of Maple Valley, Wash.; grandchildren Joleen, Terry, Chris, Gregg, Scott, Sara, Laura, Gary and Angela; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Apostolic Lutheran Church. Spring interment in Apostolic Lutheran cemetery. Arrangements by Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet.

Lester A. Carlson
Lester A. Carlson, 74, of Hibbing died Monday, March 5, 2001, in Golden Crest Health Center.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; a son, David (Anne); daughters Leslie Ann Bowman and Laura (Larry) Kerr; a brother, Art; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Private family services will ensue. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Ernest Jalmer Hackman
Ernest Jalmer Hackman, 92, of Cloquet died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in his home.
He was born Aug. 19, 1908, in Superior to Charles and Elina (Korpela) Hackman. He grew up in Brookston, Minn., and attended St. Louis County School #1 in Brookston. Ernest was a school bus driver from 1929 until 1932. He married Sally Mattson May 24, 1935, in Duluth. Ernest was a truck driver, hauling logs, gravel and milk. During the depression, he was a logging camp operator and was proud to be able to offer work to many people. In 1934, Ernest built Hackman's Corner in Brookston. He and his wife owned and operated the tavern until 1950. Ernest moved to California, where he was a carpenter. In 1951, he returned to Jacobson, Minn., where he farmed and hauled milk for several years. In 1958, he moved to Cloquet, where he managed and delivered for Iron Range Propane until retiring in 1971.

Ernest served on the Brookston Co-op Board and was a member of AARP. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, vegetable gardening and cutting firewood.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Esther Carlson; and brothers John, Sulo and Arvo Hackman.

Ernest will be missed by his wife of 65 years, Sally; sisters-in-law, Illae Hackman of Grand Rapids and Elvie Hackman of Esko; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday and 1:30 until the 2:30 p.m. service Tuesday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Spring burial in Maple Grove cemetery. (To sign the guest book online, see www.legacy.com)

Howard Dennis Zubrod
Howard Dennis Zubrod, 80, of Meadowlands, Minn., died Friday, March 2, 2001, in his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Alta Vista, Iowa, and moved to the Meadowlands area when he was 12 years old. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific Campaign with the 31st Infantry "Dixie" Division. He returned to Meadowlands, where he worked as a logger, farmer and as a miner in the natural ore mine of Pittsburgh Pacific near Eveleth.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Minnie; a son, Barry Dennis Zubrod; a grandson, Michael Starich; brothers Robert, John and James; and a sister, Virginia Hakko.

He is survived by a son, Vaughn (Debbie) of Meadowlands; daughters Phyllis (Jerry) Jundt of Anchorage, Alaska, Denice (Tim) Simmons and Connie Zubrod, both of Clearfield, Utah; a sister, Jean (Robert) Riipinen of Nashwauk; a brother, Vince of Phoenix; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. Bishop Tim Simmons officiating. Burial in Meadowlands cemetery.

Peter Richard Brose
Peter Richard Brose, 51, of Cloquet went home to God Thursday, March 1, 2001, in his home.
Peter was born Dec. 17, 1949, in Lincoln, England, to Richard F. Jr. and Jean (Clelland) Brose. He attended Duluth Cathedral High School and graduated in 1968. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Oct. 15, 1968. He served in the Vietnam War, where he earned the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Campaign medal with device, Rifle Sharpshooters Badge, Vietnam Service medal and Combat Action ribbon. After Vietnam, he worked for the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for approximately 20 years. He was currently employed with Cap-Trico in Cloquet.

Peter loved life and most of all his wife, children and family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard F. Brose Jr.

Peter is survived by his wife, Tricia of Cloquet; sons James W. and Benjamin J. Brose; a daughter, Susan J. Brose; his mother, Jean Brose; sisters JoAnne (Ross) Lasky, Susan (Fred Schneider) Brose and Jane (Ricci) Minotte; three nieces; three nephews; and his former wife, Pamela Koivisto, all of the Duluth area; his loving pets, Pumpkin, Sylvester and Kirby; and many friends.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. memorial Mass March 10 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet. The Rev. Father Kenton Sailstad officiating. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet.

Lucian J. Marsh, Jr.
Lucian J. Marsh, Jr., 89, of the Franciscan Health Center, Duluth, formerly of the Lincoln Park area died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001.
He was active in the Democrat party and also helped start food co-ops in the West Bank area of Minneapolis.

Lucian was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Lucian Sr. and Clarissa Marsh; and his third wife, Freda.

He is survived by his second wife, Margie Blegen; a son, Robin (Linda); a daughter, Lee Emanoff (Denis Sauve); and grandchildren Adam Emanoff, and Elizabeth, John-Paul and Colleen Marsh.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. March 29 in Franciscan Health Center, 3910 Minnesota Ave., Duluth.

Inez Catani Martire
Inez Catani Martire, 86, died peacefully Saturday, March 3, 2001.
She is survived by a son, Robert; a daughter, Kathleen (James) Kinney; grandchildren Melissa and Thea Kinney, and Ashley and Andrew Martire; a sister; three brothers; six sisters-in-law; and many loving nieces and nephews and friends.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in St. Leo's Parish, Hibbing. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery. Memorials are preferred to St. Leo's Parish. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Fred Paul Davich
Fred Paul Davich, 83, of Hibbing died Friday, March 2, 2001, while enjoying one of his greatest pleasures of ice fishing.
He was born Nov. 1, 1917, in North Hibbing to Marko and Mattia (Borovac) Davich. He was a Navy veteran during World War II and had retired 22 years ago from the state of Minnesota's Department of Land and Minerals. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post 8510, American Legion, Elks Lodge and Senior Bowling League. His hobbies included bowling, bocce ball and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Violet (nee Maki); daughters Marilyn (Dick) Salmi of Bigfork, Carol Johnson of Superior and Roberta (Barry) Collins of Hibbing; grandchildren Jane, Robert, Cammie, Matthew and Maggie; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 2 until the 3 p.m. service Monday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. The Rev. Bruce Dissell officiating. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Olivia A. Surine
Olivia A. Surine, 84, longtime Coleraine resident died Friday, March 2, 2001 in Itasca Nursing Home, Grand Rapids.
She was born Jan. 6, 1917, in Ward Springs, Minn., to Casper and Mathilda (Kramer) Ricker. She attended schools in Ward Springs, lived most of her life in the Coleraine area, was a homemaker and a member of Mary Immaculate Catholic Church and its C.C.W.

Olivia was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John; a daughter, Judith Spencer; and 10 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her children, Margaret Peck of Minnetonka, Minn., Earl E. (Carol) Surine of Duluth, Edith (Tom) Edwards of Lompoc, Calif., Terry Surine of Coleraine, Nancy (Dennis) Sindelir of Longmont, Colo., and Theresa (Dwight) Kessler of rural Bovey; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother; and three sisters.
Mass of Christian burial: 11 a.m. Monday in Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Coleraine. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine. Arrangements by Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine.
