Robert M. Pintar
Robert M. Pintar, 67, of Ely died Friday, March 2, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born in Hibbing Nov. 13, 1933, to Michael and Anne (Jaksha) Pintar. He was a heavy duty equipment mechanic and worked for Ring Power in Florida, Reserve Mining Co. in Babbitt and LTV Mining Co. in Hoyt Lakes, retiring in 1998. He was an Army veteran serving in the Korean War and a member of the American Legion in Babbitt.

Robert is survived by his wife, Ileen E. (Olson) of Ely; daughters Lynne (Ted) Nielsen of Ely and Debbie (John) Foy of Eveleth; sons Kenneth and James (Sonja), both of Babbitt, and Larry (Debra) and Michael (Carolyn), both of Nashwauk; sisters Florence Rocchio and Katherine Gillian, both of Nashwauk and Lolly Magayne of Wisconsin and Betty Calaqurie of Nashwauk; 18 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Praise Fellowship Church, Ely. The Rev. George Wick officiating. Spring burial in Ely cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.

Valentine A. "Val" "Willy" Lesnak Jr.
Valentine A. "Val" "Willy" Lesnak Jr., 80, of Chisholm died Friday, March 2, 2001, in University Medical Center-Mesabi, Hibbing.
He was born Dec. 3, 1920, in Chisholm to Valentine A. Sr. and Frances (Intihar) Lesnak. He was a 1938 graduate of Chisholm High School and was a lifelong resident. He was a Navy veteran of World War II from 1942 to 1946, serving on the destroyer USS Sampson in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters. He was united in marriage July 15, 1946, in Buhl to Rose T. Gesuelli. For 40 years, he was employed as a meat cutter in Lesnak Grocery Store in Chisholm, Kayfes Supermarket in Buhl and Gornick's Supermarket in Chisholm, retiring in 1980.

Val was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chisholm, where he served as an usher for over 30 years, a life member of VFW Post 8510 in Hibbing, Knights of Columbus-Chisholm Council 3539, Lake Street Senior Citizens Club of Chisholm and Slovenian National Home in Chisholm. He was an avid Chisholm Bluestreak basketball fan and enjoyed the good companionship of his family and all his friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ann Namisnik; and brothers Max and Albert.

Val is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rose; a daughter, Valerie Oberstar of Embarrass; sons John and Robert, both of Chisholm; six grandchildren; sisters Olga Wahlstrand and Frances Haro, both of Chisholm; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Tuesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Chisholm. Father Steve Daigle as celebrant. Burial in Chisholm cemetery. Arrangements by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Chisholm.

William C. Hnatko
William C. Hnatko, 82, of Chisholm died Thursday, March 1, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; sons James and Alan; a daughter, Sharon (Glenn) Bowen; five granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and a sister, Helen (Steve) Skalko.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today with 7 p.m. Masonic services in Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Chisholm and 1 until the 2 p.m. service Monday in United Methodist Church, Chisholm. Spring inurnment in Chisholm cemetery.

Donald J. Tarnowski
Donald J. Tarnowski, 69, of Hibbing died unexpectedly Thursday, March 1, 2001, in his cabin.
He was born March 26, 1931, in Hibbing to Edward and Harriet (Ziolowski) Tarnowski. He was an Army veteran during the Korean War and had worked in White Sands Air Force Base, where he helped design and test rockets that were later used in the NASA space program. He returned to Minnesota, where he worked for Ziegler Inc. as a parts clerk, retiring in 1995 after 40 years of service. He was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, being a lector and a member of the choir. He was a devoted family man who will be missed by all.

Donald was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremiah; his parents; a brother, Edward Jr.; and a sister, Diane Letourneau.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Georgia; daughters Susan (David) Betzler of Hastings, Minn., Amy (Ron) Newman of Hibbing and Julie (Evan) Sandstede of Chisholm; sons Mark (Kim) of Oakdale, Minn., Michael (Terry Miller) of Little Canada, Minn., and Matthew (Toni) and Daniel, both of Hibbing; brothers James (Peggy) of Edina, Minn., and Thomas (Kathie) of Mahtomedi, Minn.; and seven grandchildren who he greatly cherished.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Hibbing. Pallbearers are his sons, Mark, Michael, Daniel and Matthew Tarnowski, David Betzler, Ron Newman and Evan Sandstede. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Baby Madison Ranee Swedo
Baby Madison Ranee Swedo of Monroe, N.C., died Friday, March 2, 2001, at home.
Madison was born Dec. 16, 2000, in Union County to Mark Andrew Swedo and Jamie Greiner.

She is survived by her parents; a brother, Cameron Harris of Monroe; her paternal grandparents, Michael and Suzan Swedo of Maine; her paternal great-grandmother, Elizabeth Swedo of Pennsylvania; her maternal grandparents, Jerry and Robin Greiner of Kershaw, S.C.; and her maternal great-grandparents Jean Greiner, and William and Renee Hunter, all ofMinnesota.
Visitation: 10 a.m. Monday in McEwen Funeral Home, Monroe. Graveside service 11 a.m. Monday in Lakeland Memorial Park.

Earl P. Burnson
Earl P. Burnson, 83, of Grand Rapids died Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Leisure Hills Care Center.
He is survived by his children, Barbara (Dan) Warrington of Pine River; Kelly Bergstrom of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bryan (Laurie) Burnson of Grand Rapids; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Graveside services will be held in Olivet cemetery, Deer River in the spring. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, (218) 326-4000.

Mabel Bjerke
Mabel Bjerke, 94, died Friday, March 2, 2001, Littlefork Medical Center.
Mabel is survived by a daughter, Inez (Richard) Hardwig; grandchildren Sandra and Cam Hardwig, and Darci Baker; great-grandchild, Jacoby Baker; and a brother, Joseph Olson.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Wednesday in Littlefork Lutheran Church. Burial in Oakley cemetery, Littlefork. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary.

Francis Cook
Francis Cook, 48, of Aitkin passed away Thursday, March 1, 2001, in his home in Aitkin.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today and service 2:30 p.m. Monday in Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

Ina A. Elo
Ina A. Elo, 87, of Lawler, Minn., passed away Friday, March 2, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home in Nopeming, Minn.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in McGregor Funeral Home, McGregor. The Rev. James Raisanen officiating. Burial in Salo cemetery. Arrangements by McGregor Funeral Home.

Kenneth E. Johnson
Kenneth E. Johnson, 85, of Cloquet died Monday, March 5, 2001, in Cloquet Community Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel; sons David (Linda) and Duane (Marilyn); three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Wednesday in Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Burial in Fort Snelling National cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Cloquet Honor Guard.

Alan J. Ritzinger
Alan J. Ritzinger, 53, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, in his residence in Poplar of a massive heart attack.
Alan was born July 17, 1947, in LaCrosse, Wis., to Glen and Margaret Ritzinger. Alan graduated from McDonell High School in Chippewa Falls in l965, and had been a resident of the Poplar and Superior areas for the last 30 years. He served in the Navy as a radar man 2nd class from 1966 to 1970, and had been stationed on the ship, USS Columbus. He had attended the former Indianhead Technical Institute and more recently Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. He had been employed by J.C. Penney in the Miller Hill Mall in Duluth from 1973 until 1991. He currently had been a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker VanVleck-C1emens Agency of Superior.

Alan was involved in the Poplar-Wentworth Lions Club, where he was a past president, former secretary and was currently club treasurer. He was a director for the Wisconsin Lions Foundation, past zone chairman and past district secretary for the Lions. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Institute, Superior Board of Realtors, National Realtors Association and a notary public. He was former member of the Superior Junior Chamber of Commerce and Superior Elks. Alan loved the outdoors, fishing in Canada and his dogs.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah; his mother, Margaret of Chippewa Falls; brothers Jim (Betty) of Chippewa Falls, Dan (Sandy) of Custer, Wis., Jeff (Nina) of Chippewa Falls, Larry (Jodie) of Oronoco, Minn., Steve (Teresa) of Chippewa Falls and Bruce (Karen) of Eau Claire, Wis.; a sister, Mary (Doug) Craker of Chippewa Falls; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. memorial service in Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, Superior. Visitation continues noon until 1:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial Thursday in Notre Dame Catholic Church, Chippewa Falls, the Rev. Father Jerome R. Robinson officiating. Internment in Forest Hill cemetery, Chippewa Falls. Should fiends desire, memorials can be directed to the Poplar-Wentworth Lions Club or the Lions Camp, 3834 County Road A, Rosholt, WI 54473. Jimmy M. Jubie Sr.
Jimmy M. Jubie Sr., 62, longtime resident of Cloquet, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.
Jimmy was born in Cloquet on June 6, 1938, to Arthur and Cora (Johnson) Jubie. He was an Army veteran and had been employed as a truck driver for various companies. He was a former member of the National Hot Rod Association.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack.

Survivors include sons James and Jimmy Jr. of Cloquet; daughters Debbie (John) Schaper and Nicole (Mark) Nappa of Ely and Aileen Jubie of Cloquet; brothers Richard (Kathy) of Cloquet and Pete (Eloycee) of Moose Lake; sisters Pat (Marvin) Stenroos, Idella Johnson and Joann Peil of Cloquet and Dorothy (Donald) Vafias in Tennessee; grandchildren Luke, Holly, Dustin, Dylan, Coty, Brianna and Heather; and special friend, Diane Gatchell of Cloquet.
Visitation: noon until the 3 p.m. memorial service today in Nelson Funeral Care, the Rev. Father Kenton Sailstad officiating. Military honors accorded by the Cloquet Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet.

Alvina Caldwell
Alvina Caldwell passed away peacefully Friday, March 2, 2001, in Shreveport.
She was born Nov. 26, 1924, on the Chippewa Reservation in Fond Du Lac, Minn. Mrs. Caldwell retired from the VA Hospital as a registered nurse after 17 years of service. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.

Mrs. Caldwell was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Bernard T. Caldwell.

She is survived by her children, Arleen (John) Heyd of Minnesota, Patricia Rasch of Washington, Phyllis (James) Stott of Minnesota, Janis (Dave Fuhst) Fairbanks of Michigan, Ralph Fairbanks of Minnesota, Gary Joe Fairbanks of Minnesota, Jerry (Elaine) Fairbanks of Shreveport and Janet (Link Burns) Abney of Bossier City; a sister, Margaret Robinson; brothers Richard, Albert and Robert Robinson; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Alvina was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Throughout the last several years of her illnesses, her kindness and unselfish nature never failed. This is the legacy she has left to her children.
Services were March 5 in the chapel of Boone Funeral Home. Interment in Roseneath cemetery. Pallbearers were John Heyd, James Stott, John Roterman, Link Burns, Paul Fjone and David Fuhst. Honorary pallbearer was David Fairbanks.

Please make donations in Alvina's name to the American Diabetes Association or the National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana. The family would like to especially thank Drs. Teagle, Rokaw, Schuler and Dies, and nurse Trish Miller, all of WK-Pierremont.
