Rev. Wellington "Wellie" Midgley
Rev. Wellington "Wellie" Midgley, 85, of Calumet went to be with his Lord on Sunday, June 3, 2001.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today and service at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Libbey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, (218) 326-4000.

Anna Johnson
Anna Johnson, 90, of Solon Springs died Monday, June 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior.
She is survived by a son, David (Leota) Johnson; a daughter, Mary Ann (Ted) Dahlberg; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Ferguson.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and service at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs. Interment in Evergreen cemetery.

Alyce Alina (Helstrom) Salo Ruutti
Alyce Alina (Helstrom) Salo Ruutti, 95, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for about one month.
Alyce was born Jan. 26, 1906, at the family farm, north of Cloquet, to John and Elizabeth (Maki) Helstrom. Her father immigrated from Sweden and her mother from Finland. They met on the boat and neither spoke the other's language. They married and had nine children. Alyce is the last survivor.

She had worked for Hans and Lucy Solem at the Solem Hotel and also for the many owners after the Solems had died. She made her home in the hotel up until one year ago, when she moved to the Sharon Broeffle board and care home, where she could keep her cat.

In 1966 while visiting friends, she was in the St. Paul Carleton Hotel fire in which nine people perished. She was burned over 70% of her body but recovered and lived a productive life.

In addition to her brothers and sisters, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Sulo Salo; her second husband, Swan Ruutti; and her daughter, Darlene.

She is survived by a daughter, Helen Salo of Cloquet; a grandson, Michael Hackensmith of St. Cloud, Minn., her friend, John Thompson of Moose Lake; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation: 11 until the noon service Wednesday in Barr Brothers-Handevidt Funeral Home, 900 Washington Ave., Cloquet. Burial in St. Matthew's Lutheran cemetery, near the farm where she was born. Memorials preferred to Friends of Animals.

Vernon Edward Wilson
Vernon Edward Wilson, 87, of Grand Rapids died Saturday, May 5, 2001, in Leisure Hills Health and Rehab, Grand Rapids.
Born March 15, 1914, in Keeler, Saskatchewan, Canada, he was the son of Edward Chesley and Mary Elizabeth (McGowan) Wilson. When he was two years old, his family moved back to Minnesota. He grew up in Almora, Minn., attending schools there and in Henning, Minn. He retired from the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Co., as a diesel mechanic in 1976 after 41 years of service.

Vernon and Violet N. Nokua were married Aug. 8, 1936, in Grand Rapids. He was a member of the First United Church of Coleraine & Bovey, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, an elder, a trustee and deacon.

Vernon was a Bovey resident from 1935 until 1976 and had been scoutmaster and district commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America. He had served as a village clerk, volunteer fireman, a former member of the Canisteo Lodge AF&AM; of Coleraine, a member of the Itasca Lodge 208 AF&AM; in Grand Rapids, and had been a member of the Greenway Lions, the Civic, and the Sportsman's Clubs.

After his retirement in 1976, they moved to their Deer Lake cabin where he belonged to the Deer-Moose Conservation Clubs and volunteered at the Itasca Medical Center and the Itasca County Historical Society. Vernon was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed these activities with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward C. and Mary E. Wilson; a granddaughter, Heather Wilson; and sisters Ada Herdman, Ora Johnson, Zella Ramsey, Myrtle Bohn and Margaret Tully.

Survivors include his wife, Violet; sons David (Karin) of Lakeville, Minn., and Daniel (Laurie) of Crookston, Minn.; daughters Jane (John) Graf of Bloomington, Minn., and Mary Beth Crea of Hibbing; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Loren of Blackberry; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today with 7:30 p.m. Masonic service in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine. Visitation continues 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in First United Church of Coleraine & Bovey, Coleraine, the Rev. C. Arlin Talley officiating. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine.

The family prefers memorials to the Itasca Hospice Project and the American Cancer Society.

Joseph J. Primozich
Joseph J. Primozich, 89, of Eveleth died Friday, May 4, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline "Lee"; his children, Joe Jr. (Judy) Primozich, Linda (Bill) Tingley and Tom (Martha) Primozich; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home Chapel in Eveleth, Father Eamonn Boland officiating. Burial in the Eveleth cemetery.

Jean Kathleen Fisher
Jean Kathleen Fisher, 79, of International Falls died Saturday, May 5, 2001.
She is survived by her son, Thomas B. Fisher of Ranier, Minn., and grandchildren Jamie, Michael and Melissa.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday with 6:30 p.m. vigil prayers and service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, all in St. Thomas Catholic Church, International Falls. Interment in St. Thomas Catholic cemetery, International Falls. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary, Inc.

Mary K. Stupca
Mary K. Stupca, 88, of Gilbert died Saturday, May 5, 2001, in her residence.
She is survived by her son, Charles (Susan); daughters Mary Lou (Henry) Brown and Carole Babich; two brothers; a sister; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gilbert, Father Joseph Sirba officating. Inurnment in Gilbert cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Gilbert.

Jenny Mary Rise
Jenny Mary Rise, 85, of Two Harbors died Saturday, May 5, 2001, in the Sunrise Home, Two Harbors.
She was born Jan. 17, 1916, to Adolph and Emma (Lundmark) Wickstrom in Silver Creek Township, Minn. She was a lifelong resident of the Two Harbors area and a homemaker through the years. She was a member of the Sons of Norway.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orville in 1998, a son, Vernon; and her brother, Hjalmer Wickstrom.

She is survived by daughters Mary Gustafson of Tigard Ore., Janice Hendrickson of Two Harbors and Darlene Mundy of Ellensburg, Wash.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors.

Sadie Martin
Sadie Martin, 79, of Alexandria, Minn., and formerly of Virginia, died Monday, June 18, 2001.
Memorial service: 10 a.m. Monday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Virginia. A lunch will be served in the Kaleva Hall following the interment in Greenwood cemetery. Arrangements are with Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria, and Bauman Family Funeral Home, Virginia.

Mildred M. Gontjes
Mildred M. Gontjes, 84, of Deer Lodge, Mont., died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Deer Lodge.
She was born July 3, 1916, and had spent most of her adult life in Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by Martin S. Gontjes and John Kniep; her son, Ronald Gontjes; her granddaughter, Elizabeth M. Gontjes; two sisters; and a brother.

She is survived by two daughters; three sisters; a brother; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She will be deeply missed.
Private family services will be held. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery in Hinckley.

Alice C. Bengston
Alice C. Bengston, 94, of Fridley, Minn., formerly of the Saginaw area, died Monday, June 18, 2001.
She was born Aug. 4, 1906, at Grand Lake in Saginaw.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; and brothers Almer and Clarence.

She is survived by a niece, Dorothy (Robert) Aldrich; a grandniece; four grandnephews; three great-grandnieces; and seven great-grandnephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Fridley Covenant Church, 6390 University Ave. NE, Fridley, (763) 571-1657. Interment and graveside service 11 a.m. Saturday at Union cemetery, Duluth. Arrangements by Miller Funeral Home, Fridley Chapel, (763) 571-1300.
