Madeline "Dolly" Anderson
Madeline "Dolly" Anderson, 82, of Tower died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in Eveleth Services Park.
She was born April 20, 1919, in Soudan, the daughter of Pietro Filippini and Lena Chiabotti Jeranson. She attended Tower-Soudan School and married Harry "Bud" Anderson on May 27, 1938, in Soudan.

She was an exceptionally active member of St. James Presbyterian Church, working in many capacities on a weekly basis, and serving on the Session and in United Presbyterian Women. She was a member of Lake Vermilion VFW Post 1029 Auxiliary, Nelson-Jackson American Legion Post 245 Auxiliary, Rebekkahs and the Old Settlers. She was well-known for sharing her baking with everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, August "Slim" Jeranson; her husband, Harry; a grandson, Gary Anderson; a brother, Harry "Sonny" Chiabotti; and brothers-in-law Edward Majerle and Jack Anderson.

Dolly is survived by daughters Bonnie (John) Salo of Two Harbors and Patricia (Richard) Paciotti of Eveleth; a son, Jim Anderson of Tower and Judi Anderson of Tower; grandchildren Michael Anderson of Champlin, Minn., Karlene (Nick) Colletti of Bremerton, Wash., Sherry (Joe) Zupancich of Soudan, Tim (Lisa) Salo of Delavan, Wis., Joe Paciotti of Eveleth and Jennifer Paciotti of Spirit Lake, Idaho; a sister, Regina "Tootsie" (Edward) Kotzian of Tower; sisters-in-law Anna Laura Majerle of Tower, Alice Chiabotti of Virginia, formerly of Soudan, and Marion Anderson Wagner of Oregon; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of friends.

Dolly was a loving mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family. She was a caring and giving person to everyone in the community.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in St. James Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Ann Painter and the Rev. Richard Blood officiating. Inurnment in Lakeview cemetery, Tower. Memorials may be directed to further Alzheimer's research.

Marie J. Hughes
Marie J. Hughes, 83, a longtime Marble resident, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in Golden Crest Nursing Home, Hibbing.
She was born July 7, 1918, in Marquette, Mich., to Leo H. and Gertrude (Stenglein) Toupin. A Marble resident for 80 years, she was a 1936 graduate of Greenway High School and a 1941 graduate of the College of St. Scholastica with a registered nurse bachelor's degree. Marie worked as an RN in the newborn nursery at Hibbing General Hospital for 23 years, retiring in 1976. Along with Mary Ann Tahija, Marie initiated pre-natal classes at Hibbing General Hospital and was the first to diaper Kevin McHale. Marie also taught sex education classes at Greenway High School.

She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church of Marble and its Council of Catholic Women. Marie and John F. Hughes were married March 23, 1942, in Marble. Marie was endlessly curious, had boundless energy and traveled as much as she was able.

Her parents, Leo and Gertrude Toupin, and her best friend, Esther Dirkes, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, John; children Margaret (Larry) Beall of Lafayette, Ind., Patrick (Ilene) Hughes of Apple Valley, Minn., Kathleen (Daniel) McQuaig of Virginia Beach, Va., Mary Jo (Larry) Tripp of Basalt, Colo., Michael (Jackie) Hughes of Lawrence Lake, Sally (Tom) Parry of Needles, Calif., Jeanette Lindstrom of West St. Paul, Susan (John) Emanuel of Hibbing, Elizabeth (Jim) Polson of Tigard, Ore., Jean (Tim) Viara of Roundup, Mont., Jane (Jim) Ritter of Wyoming, Minn., and Joanne (Russ) Hohbein of New Salem, N.D.; 27 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial: 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marble, Monsignor Bernard Popesh as celebrant. Arrangements by Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine.

Olaf A. Jacobson
Olaf A. Jacobson, a former rural Calumet resident, died Friday, July 20, 2001, in Itasca Nursing Home, Grand Rapids.
He was born Sept. 18, 1913, in Bovey, to Jack and Fiina (Hakala) Jacobson. He lived most of his life in the rural Calumet area and attended Bovey schools. He married Anna Karjala on June 6, 1940, and had worked in the Hill Annex mine.

His parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Anna; a niece; and two nephews.
There will be no funeral services at this time. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine. Arrangements by Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine.

Gladys Adelyn Kuoksa
Gladys Adelyn Kuoksa, 83, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Duluth, died Friday, July 20, 2001, in Itasca Nursing Home, Grand Rapids.
Gladys was born Jan. 5, 1918, to John O. and Caroline (Haugen) Olson in Deer River, where she grew up and attended schools. She graduated from Deer River High School in 1936. Gladys served her country in the WAVES from 1941 until her honorable discharge in 1945. While enlisted, she attended Hunter College in New York. Gladys was united in marriage to William "Bill" Kuoksa in February of 1946 in Deer River. Gladys worked for the Oliver Iron Mining Co. for many years and then for U.S. Steel in Duluth until her retirement in 1980.

She was a member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church in Duluth and the Lady Shriners Duluth chapter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill in 1988; and brothers Randolph and Morris.

Survivors include her sisters, Viola Olson Scofield of Backus, Minn., and Merna Olson Johnson of Grand Rapids; a niece, Carolyn O'Brien of St. Francis, Minn.; and nephews Larry Johnson of Grand Rapids and Harry Scofield of Northfield, Minn.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial was at Park Hill cemetery, Duluth. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, (218) 326-4000.

James R. Potswald
James R. Potswald, 70, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at home.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Helen Potswald.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughters Lisa (Chuck Allan) Potswald and Ann (Brian) Haugen; a son, Jim (Lori) Potswald; grandchildren Leah and Derek Haugen, and Kellie, Ryan and Kyle Potswald; brothers Carl (Donna) Potswald, Robert Potswald and William (Rebecca) Potswald; sisters Elizabeth (George) Green, Susan (Gale) Ziemski and Janet (Kenneth) McGough; and mother-in-law Helen Olson.
Honoring Jim's request, there will be no services. Arrangements are by Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet.

Ernest "Ernie" Edward Walli
Ernest "Ernie" Edward Walli, 82, of Wright died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in his home.
He was born May 29, 1919, in Lakeview Township to Jacob and Sophia (Johnson) Walli. He graduated from Cromwell High School in 1938 and attended Duluth Business School. During World War II, Ernie worked at the Buick Motor Co. in Flint, Mich., building aircraft engines for the war effort. After the war, he moved to Minneapolis.

He married Madeline O'Connel in 1955 and she preceded him in death in 1981. He worked as a government inspector at Honeywell for many years and as a quality control specialist with the Veterans Administration. Since 1976 he worked part time as a bellman at the Sheraton Ritz in Minneapolis. He worked full time from 1981 until the hotel closed in 1988. On Aug. 20, 1988, he married Shirley Skrzela in Wright. They built and made their home on Cole Lake in Lakeview Township. From 1990-92, Ernie worked at the Omni North Star Hotel in Minneapolis.

Ernie was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright, Lakeside Community Clubhouse, Wright Senior Citizens and the Carlton County Historical Society. He enjoyed bowling, dancing and playing cards.

In addition to his first wife, Ernie was preceded in death by his brothers, Eino, Arthur and Henry.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Wright, and her children, JoAnn (Don) Tickle, Janice (Tony) OrtMertl, Richard (Terri) Skrzela and David (Amy) Skrzela, all of Clio, Mich.; step-grandchildren, Sue and Stanley Tickle, Gary and Kevin OrtMertl and Danielle and Jessica Skrzela; a step-great-grandchild, Jenna Powell; his first wife; Madeline's children, Patricia Panagos, Marvel Pomish and Jack O'Connel, all of Minneapolis; a step-granddaughter, Deborah Frank; a step-great-granddaughter, Rachel Ann Frank; brothers Arne (Fran) of Flushing, Mich., Charles (Norma) of Wright, Reino (Donna) of Greensboro, N.C., and Sulo (Dolores) of Wright; sisters Elma Bordwell of Spokane, Wash., and Jennie Waisanen of Wright; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry (Helvi) Walli of Duluth; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 2-5 p.m. Sunday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Bethany Lutheran Church, Cromwell. Burial in Lakeside cemetery in Lakeview Township. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Marcella E. Mossberg
Marcella E. Mossberg, 78, of Sturgeon Lake died Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Miller Dwan Medical Center, Duluth.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jordan and Helga Nelson; four brothers and three sisters.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 54 years, Winston; children Susan (Thomas) Carlson of Cloquet, Norman Mossberg of Minneapolis, the Rev. Roland (Michele) of Stillwater and Ronald (Doreen) Mossberg of Maplewood; grandchildren John, Julie and Joe Carlson and Erik, Kiersten and Seth Mossberg; sisters Alice Freeman of Moose Lake, Evelyn Schiebe of Fort Myers, Fla., Edith Danielson of Duluth, Gladys (Harold) Overland of Sturgeon Lake and Selma Overland of Moose Lake; 38 nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Visitation: 6-9 p.m. Sunday in Evangelical Covenant Church, Moose Lake, where it will continue from 1 until the 2 p.m. service Monday, the Revs. Roland Mossberg and Todd Van Zee officiating. Burial in Blomskog cemetery, Windemere Township. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Ellen M. Korpi
Ellen M. Korpi, 92, of Grand Rapids died Thursday, July 19, 2001, in the Itasca Medical Center in Grand Rapids.
Ellen was born in Wawina, Minn., Jan. 9, 1909, to August and Hilma Kautto. She graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1926 and from Duluth State Teachers College in 1928. In 1960, Ellen earned a degree in elementary education from University of Minnesota Duluth. She also earned a special-education certificate from St. Cloud Teachers College. She taught in School District 318 for 32 years.

Ellen married Hugo Korpi in 1934 at Squaw Lake, where they resided until 1954 when they moved to Grand Rapids.

Ellen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Women's Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. She also belonged to the Retired Educators of Minnesota, National Retired Teachers Association, Itasca Finnish Club, the Pokegama Women's Study Club, and the Itasca Historical Society.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Hugo in 1958.

She is survived by daughters Irene (Chester) Martin of Bloomington, Minn., Patrice (William) Mager of Cohasset, Minn.; sons John (Virginia) Korpi of Kalispell, Mont., James Korpi of Coleraine; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, the Rev. Joel Rova officiating. Burial in Itasca-Calvary cemetery, Grand Rapids.

Ervin J. Lindula
Ervin J. Lindula, 76, of Mountain Iron died Thursday, July 19, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday in Range Funeral Home, Virginia, and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in First Apostolic Lutheran Church, Midway-Virginia. Burial in Zim cemetery.
