Donna Kay (Vandenberg) Ashcroft
Donna Kay (Vandenberg) Ashcroft, 41, of Strand Road, Cloquet, formerly of Superior, died Wednesday morning, July 11, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born March 29, 1960, in Superior and resided in the Cloquet area for the past 20 years.
Mrs. Ashcroft was co-owner and operator of Upfront Hairstylists in Barnum for the past 10 years. She enjoyed crocheting, camping, fishing, gardening and four-wheeling. Donna had a unique zest for life and loved the outdoors, especially mud. After a courageous battle with cancer, she gained her wings at first dawn's light.
While residing in Superior, she had been a member of Zoar Lutheran Brethren Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jeric Ashcroft; and two brothers, Thomas and James Vandenberg.
She is survived by a son, Kyle (Mandy) Ashcroft, Hermantown; daughter, Shanda Ashcroft, also of Hermantown; her parents, Lloyd and Iva Vandenberg, Superior; a brother, Larry (Connie) Vandenberg, Superior; two sisters Judy (Bill) Williams, Maplewood, Minn., and Carol (Russ) Bottjer, Poway, Calif.; special friends, Brian Cummings and Jean Saylor, both of Cloquet; two sisters-in-law, Karen Vandenberg, Superior; and Kelly Vandenberg, Houston; and two grandchildren, Samantha and Jerrick Ashcroft.
Visitation: 10:30 until the 11:30 a.m. memorial service Monday in Downs Funeral Home, Superior, the Rev. Mark Holmes and the Rev. Jason Benjestorf officiating.
James E. Parker
James E. Parker, 78, of Big Falls died Thursday, July 12, 2001, in Northern Itasca Health Care Center, Bigfork.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; daughters Janet Erickson, Betty Parker and Gwen Lumppio; a son, Ron (Barb) Parker; a sister, Harriet (Dan) Bode; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Wilma E. Johnson
Wilma E. Johnson, 94, and a resident of Chappy's Golden Shores in Hill City died Thursday, July 12, 2001, in her home.
She is survived by daughters Delpha Taylor, Helen Emerson, Betty Kelczewski, Mavis Arledge and Darlene Chapman; sons Roy "Bud," Lester and Robert Johnson; 29 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; nine great-great- grandchildren.

Leo Marcus Martinez, infant son of Jose and Jeannie (Loons) Martinez of Cloquet, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.

Edward A. Childs, 54, of Zim died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in Zim.
He is survived by his mother, Josephine Childs of Duluth; a sister, Carol Mathwig of Jordan, Minn.; and brothers Dennis, Roger, Gary, Kenneth and Ronald Childs, all of Duluth, Reggie and Donald Childs, both of Tower, and Jerry Hanson of Colorado.

Adeline Elizabeth Sepez, 91, of Eveleth died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in the Leisure Hills facility in Hibbing.
Survivors include sons Robert (Phyllis) Varani, Eugene (Josephine) Varani and Francis (June) Varani; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Josephine Shavor, 90, of Eveleth died Thursday, July 12, 2001, in White Community Hospital and Nursing Home, Aurora.

Evelyn Gertrude Healy
Evelyn Gertrude Healy, 89, of Holyoke died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in the hospice unit of St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
She was born Dec. 30, 1911, in Minneapolis to Robert and Anna (Buck) Frazier. She was united in marriage to Martin Healy on Aug. 11, 1940, in Iowa, and they moved to Holyoke shortly after.
Evelyn loved gardening, dogs, cooking and canning. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, caring for her son, Billy, and the Holyoke Birthday Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin; an infant daughter, Alice; brothers Louie and Robert Frazier; and sisters Lottie Anderson and Ruthie Jack.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Evelyn (Theodore) Breu of Duluth; a son, William "Billy" of Duluth; grandchildren Sandra (Paul) Kennedy, Steve Carlson, Scott (M.J.) Carlson, Shawn (Jenny) Carlson and Juan Cocco; and great-grandchildren Ryan, Jordan, Morgan, Mariah, Tiegen and Rachel.
Visitation: 2:30 until the 3:30 p.m. service Friday in Kerrick Community Church, the Rev. Howard Herringshaw officiating. Pallbearers will be Ted Breu, Steve Carlson, Scott Carlson, Shawn Carlson, Juan Cocco, Paul Kennedy, Ryan Carlson and Jordan Carlson. Music will be provided by Tom Cawcutt. Mildred S. Carlson
Mildred S. Carlson, 93, of Two Harbors died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in Sunrise Home.
She was born and grew up in South Dakota, then moved to Chicago to attend nurse's training. She married
Carl E. Carlson in Chicago, and they made their home there for many years. She was active as a volunteer, especially with the Lutheran Children's Home. She was named "Volunteer of the Year" in Chicago.
After retiring they moved to Two Harbors in 1970. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and its Mary Martha Circle, where she led Bible study.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl E. in December 1990; and a brother, Oscar Simpson.
She is survived by foster children; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Two Harbors. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
Viljo W. "Bud" Simberg
Viljo W. "Bud" Simberg, 80, of Virginia died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in the Arrowhead Senior Living Community (Arrowhead Health Care Center) in Virginia.
He was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Nashwauk to Victor and Hilma (Bilten) Simberg. He was a graduate of Hibbing High School and spent some time with the CCC Camp at Side Lake. During World War II he served the Navy in the Pacific theater. After the war he did body and fender work in Cloquet and California. Later, he went to barber school, and he married
Helen Latvala in Cloquet in 1954. They moved to Virginia, where he owned and operated his own barber shop for many years.
He attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, receiving an associate degree in vocational education. He taught an apprenticeship program at Eveleth Vocational Technical Institute for Eveleth Mines and U.S. Steel for several years. He then worked at Eveleth Mines until his retirement.
Bud was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Kolstad Chapter 23 of the DAV, Crellin-Tini VFW Post 1113 and Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post 239, all of Virginia. He was also a member of Operating Engineers Local 49, Millwright Union and the Barbers Union. He was a driver for the "Meals our Mission" program for many years.
Bud was a good man, a good husband and father, and a good friend to many. He will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Frank, Walter and Wilbert Simberg; and sisters Anna Lehto and Ila Olson.
Bud is survived by his wife, Helen; children Carol (Cal Root) Simberg of Elmhurst, Ill., Alan (Donna) Simberg of Cocoa, Fla., Steven (Patricia) Simberg of Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D., and James Simberg of Racine, Wis.; grandsons Keith, Kevin, Nicholas and Spencer; a sister, Melba Kleiber of Sun City West, Ariz.; sisters-in-law Mary Simberg of Merced, Calif., and Marlene Simberg of Hibbing; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Bauman-Cron Funeral Home, Virginia, and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Saturday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Virginia, the Rev. Duane Bottjen officiating. Military honors accorded by Virginia Serviceman's Color Guard. Inurnment Monday in Fort Snelling National cemetery, Minneapolis. Ruth H. Keuhn
Ruth H. Keuhn, 80, of Carlton, formerly of Ely, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 10, 1921, in Thief River Falls, the youngest of 12 children to Norwegian immigrants John and Borghild (Berutson) Myhrer. On Nov. 25, 1939, she married
Kenneth Keuhn in New Folden, Minn.
Ruth will be remembered for her and Ken's vegetable and flower gardens in Section 30 near Ely, for her Finnish squeaky cheese-making and Christmas wreaths made from balsam and princess pine. Ruth was a member of First Lutheran Church and its Circle, Ely Senior Citizens and Ely Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth of 61 years; daughters Patsy (Patrick) Norha of Cloquet, Eileen (Dick) Schantz-Hansen of Carlton and Robin (Mark) Braaten of Duluth; sons William (Carolyn Pegalow) Keuhn of Coon Rapids and Michael (Marcy) Keuhn of Esko; grandchildren Suzanne (Russell) Anderson of Esko, Annette (Tim) Riley of Duluth, Todd (Carol) Frisell of Aughrim, Ireland, Darin (Marianne Rittenberg) Keuhn of St. Paul, Chris Mattila of Alton, Ill., Warren Mattila of Duluth, and Hailey and Andrea Keuhn, both of Esko; great-grandchildren Samantha and Katie Anderson, both of Esko, and Ciara and Odhran Frisell, both of Ireland.
