Matti Torniainen
Matti Torniainen, 91, of Cloquet passed away with dignity and grace Friday, May 25, 2001, in Cloquet Convalescent Center.
He was born March 16, 1910, in Mikkeli, Finland, and emigrated to the United States in 1956. He was employed at the Northwest Paper Co. until his retirement.

Matti leaves his wife of 49 years, Vera, and his beloved children, a son, Veli Torniainen and wife, Shelley of Blaine, Minn., and a daughter, Maarit Torniainen of Duluth. A sister, Maila Laine, survives in Finland.
Memorial service: 5 p.m. Tuesday in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.

Albert E. Johnson
Albert E. Johnson, 75, of Hutter died Friday, May 25, 2001, in Virginia.

Survivors include his wife, Lila; a son, Steven; daughters Sharon (Raymond) Johnson, Carol (Joseph) Johnson, Nancy (Nathan) Niemela, Brenda (Guy) Elmore, Peggy (Clifford) Laakkonen, Susan (David) Hearn, Kathleen Johnson, Melissa (Brian) Peterson and Rita (Thomas) Sturos; two brothers; four sisters; 36 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Gilbert, and from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in First Apostolic Church, Virginia. Burial with military honors in Gilbert cemetery.

Anna "Selina" Silverdahl
Lived in three centuries
Anna "Selina" Silverdahl, 110, of Cook died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in the Cook Community Convalescent Nursing Care Unit.
She was born April 30, 1891, to Martin and Brita (Nilsdotter) Martinson in Sweden. She grew up and attended school in Sweden.

On Feb. 10, 1918, she was united in marriage with John Silverdahl in Sweden. In 1921, the couple immigrated into the United States, settling in Silverdale.

In 1949, they moved to Gheen making Cook their home in 1966. She was a member of the former Northern Gospel Mission Church of Virginia, the Willow Valley Farmers Club, and the Willow Valley Hobby Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1982; daughters Ruth Amy in 1929 and Karen Metsa in 1998; a son, Henry in 1998; a grandson; and her parents.

Survivors include a son, Larry (Joan) Silverdahl of Mounds View, Minn.; a daughter, Bertha Davis of Sand Point, Idaho; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; numerous step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, step great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Monday in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Angora. Burial in Silverdale cemetery in Silverdale, Minn. Arrangements by the Range Funeral Home of Virginia.

Ronald James Nyberg
Ronald James Nyberg, 55, of Wrenshall died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at the DVA Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
He was born Sept. 26, 1945, in Duluth. He was raised in West Duluth and served with the Navy in Vietnam from 1963-1966. He was united in marriage to Deborah on March 26, 1982, in Watertown, S.D. He was a journeyman sheet metal apprentice and worked for A.W. Kuettel and Northwest Specialty Contractors. Ron attended the University of Minnesota Duluth and the U of M, and received certification as a chemical dependency specialist. He worked as interim director and counselor at Douglas County Receiving Center from 1974-1975. He then owned Shepherd's Cleaning System from 1975-1995.

He served as director of bus ministry for the House of Hope Assembly of God, a foster parent for Carlton County, and was a Wrenshall resident since 1985.

Ron was preceded in death by his mother, Rosemary (Cashin) Sutton; and a brother, Roger.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie; a son, Chris (Wendy) of Wrenshall; grandchildren Alisha and Colt; a brother, Rod Sutton of Duluth; sisters Rochelle Sommer of Duluth, Karen Gunderson of Elk River, Debbie (Dan) Lorenz of Duluth and Rebekah Bergstrom of Duluth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1 until the 3 p.m. memorial service Friday at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, the Rev. Mike Keller officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Dave Lockwood and Dick Kelly. Inurnment services will follow at the Silverbrook cemetery in Wrenshall with military honors presented by the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 of Carlton. Luncheon will then follow at the Silverbrook Town Hall in Wrenshall. Arrangements are with Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.

Shirley Ann Bush
Shirley Ann Bush, 73, of Marble died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in Trout Lake Township.
She is survived by a daughter, Jacquelynn "Jackie" Koziol; a son, Danny Bush; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters Algy Finke, Donaleen Beyer, LaVonne Thaden and Kay (Jack) Keller; special friends Cecil and Hazel Hamlin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Service at 11 a.m. Monday in Grace Lutheran Church, Marble. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine.

Mary E. Starkovich
Mary E. Starkovich, 86, of Ely died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Ely to Joseph and Frances (Liskovich) Gregorich. On June 11, 1934, she married Joseph Starkovich in Ely.

Mary was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, S.N.P.J. 268, the Senior Citizens, Slovenian Ladies Union and VFW Auxiliary, all in Ely.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph, on Nov. 25, 1980; brothers Frank, Tony and Edward Gregorich; and sisters Frances Zakrajsek and Sophie Zavodnick.

Survivors include sisters Rose Koroshec of Aurora and Tillie Novosel of Ely; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Rev. James Scheuer as celebrant. Burial to follow in Ely cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.

Mary Margaret "Peggy" Clarity
Mary Margaret "Peggy" Clarity, 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in Falls Good Samaritan Care Center.
She was born July 29, 1915, in St. Cloud and graduated from Cathedral High School there. Peggy also lived in Detroit Lakes and Park Rapids, and moved to International Falls in 1942. She worked in telephone offices for several years and was a member of St. Thomas Church.

Peggy loved reading, writing, poetry, playing cribbage and being with the family.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth (Quinlivan) Leigh; and her husband of 56 years, Otto Clarity, on April 8, 1993.

Her survivors include daughter Dianne (Chuck) Lamb of San Diego; son Jack (Sue) Clarity and daughters Jeannine (Jim) Nelson and Rochelle (Marvin) Christensen, all of International Falls; grandchildren Wendy Mignona, Janice Walker, Leslie Tipsword, Gary Lamb, Tim, Tom and Troy Clarity, Tammy Wood, Teri Anderson, Laura Clark, Lin Nelson, and Cody and Jessica Christensen; 25 great-grandchildren; and special friend Louise Brackin.
Visitation begins after 6 p.m. today in Green-Larsen Mortuary with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m. followed by recitation of the Holy Rosary. Mass of the Resurrection at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Thomas Catholic Church. Interment in St. Thomas cemetery. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary, Inc., International Falls.

Heather Nicole Pierce
Heather Nicole Pierce, 26, of Cohasset died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Pierce; a daughter, Catherine; a son, Gavin; her father, Michael Pavelich; her mother, Catherine (Michael) Brown; a sister; two brothers; a paternal grandmother; maternal grandparents; paternal step-grandparents; and her great-grandmother.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial Mass Monday in St. Augustine's Catholic Church, Cohasset. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home.

Ailie S. "Mazie" Niemi
Ailie S. "Mazie" Niemi, 86, a longtime resident of Hibbing died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Shaddie) Holman; her son, Allan (Barbara); six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 2:30 until the 3:30 p.m. service Saturday in Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home Chapel. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery. Family services are provided by Anderson-Daniels, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Hibbing.

Michael G. Frink
Michael G. Frink, 38, of Palisade died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in his home.
Memorial service: 4 p.m. Sunday in Palisade-Berglund Park in Palisade, the Rev. Charles Carlson officiating. Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin assisted with the memorial arrangements.

Thomas Joseph "T.J." Opalinski
Thomas Joseph "T.J." Opalinski, 34, of Eden Prairie, Minn., died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Monica; sons Thomas Joseph III and Max James; a daughter, Taylor Monique Opalinski; his mother and stepfather, Anita and Gerald Irvine; a brother; two sisters; several nieces and nephews; and two stepsisters.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Crosby. Burial in Lakewood cemetery. Arrangements by Koop Funeral Home, Crosby.

William E. Donovan Sr.
William E. Donovan Sr., 65, of Hibbing died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001.
He is survived by his mother; his children, Rowa J. Donovan, William E. Donovan Jr., Rachel L. Donovan, Elizabeth C. Donovan and Aaron (Kelly) Donovan; stepchildren Priscilla (Keith) Rafdahl, Brian (Sonja) Jones and Robert (Allison) Kidd; four grandchildren; a brother; a sister; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 10 a.m. Saturday in Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home Chapel, Hibbing.
