Charles "Chuck" G. Childs
Charles "Chuck" G. Childs, 64, of Grand Rapids died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
He is survived by sons Daniel and Steve Childs; sisters Virginia Longballa, Joyce Deering and Carol Messer; brothers Robert "Bob" Childs Sr., Donald "Don", Loren, David and Ray Childs Jr.; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Service 11 a.m. Tuesday in First Church of God, Grand Rapids. Burial with full military honors at Itasca-Calvary cemetery, Grand Rapids.

Anthony P. Jerulle
Anthony P. Jerulle, 82, of Hibbing died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001.
He is survived by sons David (Thoa), Joseph (Peggy), Gary (Laurie) and Anthony Jr. (Kelly); daughters Rosemary Scipioni, Linda Wherland, Betty (Bryan) Flaherty and Karen Jerulle; two brothers; two sisters; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Dougherty Funeral Home and continues until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial in St. Leo's Catholic Church. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery.

Arthur Clarence Johnson
Arthur Clarence Johnson, 83, of Virginia died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home, Duluth.
He was born Sept. 27, 1917, to Martin and Anna (Edstrom) Johnson in Virginia. He grew up and attended school in Virginia. He was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army 3rd Cavalry in Europe, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He served in the military for five years and 11 months. He was employed by U.S. Steel for 32 years.

Arthur was a member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post 239, VFW Crellin-Tini Post 1113 and a life member of DAV Kolstad Chapter 23, all of Virginia. He was also a member of the Virginia Senior Citizens and an honorary member of Steelworkers Union Local 1938.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; two sisters; and a brother, John.

Survivors include a daughter, Paulette J. (David) Jallen of Alabama; sons Roger L. (Dawn) Johnson of New Berlin, Wis., and Dennis W. (Denise) Johnson of Duluth; grandchildren Caroline and Jennifer Jallen, Joseph and Julie Johnson, and Danielle and Kelley Johnson.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service Tuesday in Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church, Virginia. Burial with military honors accorded by the Virginia Color Guard in Greenwood cemetery, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Hospice Care in Virginia, or the American Legion Post 239 of Virginia. Arrangements by the Range Funeral Home of Virginia.

Betty Mae Depew
Betty Mae Depew, 75, of Aurora died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001.
She is survived by a son, Richard (Louise); daughters Barbara (James) Stephens and Toni (Mark) Oja; a brother, Richard (Janice); a sister, Marilyn Hannah; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5 until the 6 p.m. service Tuesday in Zeimer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora. Inurnment in Braham, Minn.

Elda F. Swanson
Elda F. Swanson, 94, of Grand Rapids and formerly of Cohasset, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Elda is survived by a cousin, Roy (Edna) Gustafson of La Prairie, Minn.; a niece, Cleora Ward of Orion, Ill.; and several other nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Burial in Wildwood cemetery, Cohasset.

Harry Thor Martin Isakson
Harry Thor Martin Isakson, 91, lifelong resident of Virginia died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in the Virginia Convalescent Care Center.
He was born Aug. 17, 1910, in Virginia, the son of Roy and Thora (Hansen) Isakson. He was a 1929 graduate of Roosevelt High School. He married Erma Hill on June 12, 1932. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Virginia.

Harry was employed in the early years as a sales clerk in numerous Virginia businesses and was a Met Life Insurance agent. He retired from the DWP Railroad in 1975 after 32 years of service.

He was a musician all his life, starting under the tutelage of Vernon Malone. He played his trombone in the '30s in his dance band, The Troubadours. He played for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra during its existence from 1932-1948. He performed for the Virginia City Band for 65 years. He also was an originator of the Mesabi Community College Band.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Erma; a daughter, Ruth Ann Portinen, in 1981; a brother, Roy, in 1999; and a nephew, Herbert "Andy" Anderson, in 1969.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Jon (Roxanne) Lundstrom of Swan Lake, Steven (Teresa) Lundstrom of Britt, Rian (David) Maki of Hibbing, Susan Skalko of Chisholm, Paul (Tia) Wirtanen of Grand Rapids and Tracy (Dwight) Mortenson of Williston, N.D.; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn (Herbert) Anderson of Virginia; and a niece, Donna Deluca of Virginia.
Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in United Methodist Church of Virginia, the Rev. Joyce Slostad officiating. Inurnment in Greenwood cemetery. Memorials preferred to the Virginia Historical Society, or to United Methodist Church of Virginia.

Linnea M. Holmes
Linnea M. Holmes, 83, former Marble resident, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Born Nov. 17, 1917, in Marble, she was the daughter of Emil and Mina (Nordfelt) Sigfrinius. She grew up in Marble, attended the Olcott School in Marble, and was a 1936 graduate of Greenway High School. She had lived in Chicago for over 25 years and following her marriage to Dr. George Holmes on Sept. 19, 1965, she lived in Hanover, Ill., until moving back to Marble in 1971. She had been a telephone operator in Coleraine and had worked at Northern Trust in Chicago for many years.

Linnea had been a member of Marble United Methodist Church and Pengilly United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Mina Sigfrinius; her husband, Dr. George A. Holmes; and brothers Ragnar, Sigward, Arnold, Allen and Darrell Sigfrinius.

Survivors include a brother, David (Beverly) Sigfrinius of Calumet; sisters Elsie (Bernard) Thomas of Marble, Hazel Organ of Duluth and Elaine (Louis) Legueri of Nashwauk; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine, the Rev. Jan Barker officiating. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine.

Pamela R. Rasmussen McLaughlin
Pamela R. Rasmussen McLaughlin, 47, of Esko, formerly of Kansas City, Mo., passed away and went home to be with the Lord, Aug. 23, 2001, in Duluth.
Pam was a member of National Honor Society at Shawnee Mission Northwest Kansas. She was a four-year graduate of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., in 1974. Pam had been employed by FedEx since 1988.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wallace Rasmussen, in 1965.

Survivors include her husband, Royce of Esko, a son, Jason Haney, a daughter, Kristen Haney, grandsons Jorden and Hunter, all of Kansas City; stepdaughters Sarah and Deborah McLaughlin of Duluth; her mother and stepfather, Beverly and Victor Brewer of Kansas City; a brother, Wayne (Linda) Rasmussen of Kansas City; a sister, Bonnie (Al) Renner of Independence, Mo.; stepbrother David (Polly) Brewer of Holt, Mo.; stepsisters Victoria (Charles) Jeffers, Veneica (Bill) Rubicam, all of Kansas City, and Venita (James) Black of Smithville, Mo.; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Saturday in Johnson Mortuary, Duluth, and 6-8 p.m. Monday in Evangelistic Center Church, 1024 Truman Road, Kansas City, where funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary, Duluth, and McGilly Memorial Antioch Chapel, Kansas City.

Raymond VanDuker
Raymond VanDuker, 66, of Meadowlands died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born in Detroit to Paul and Sabrina (Sieczka) VanDuker. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and moved to Meadowlands in 1972 where he was owner of the Rail Hub Tavern and was self-employed as a truck driver.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; a sister, Loraine Cutlip; sons Steven (Bonnie), Michael (Sonya) and James (Connie); daughters Susan (Walter) Woodcock and Nancy Makela; 11 grandchildren; 16 nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service today in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Meadowlands. Burial in Toivola cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Hilda A. Bleck
Hilda A. Bleck, 92, of Cloquet, formerly of Duluth, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, in Cloquet Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 11, 1909, in Danville Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, to John and Augusta (Kesting) Attenberger. She married Maynard Bleck Feb. 8, 1934, at Minnesota Lake. They farmed in Waldorf, Minn., for several years. Hilda was a homemaker and also helped Maynard run his residential construction business. They lived in Pine City, Minn., and Cook before moving to Duluth in 1960. They moved to Saginaw in 1977 and returned to Duluth in 1983. She was a member of the congregation of Jehovah's Witness and West End Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Maynard, Oct. 26, 1997; brother, Richard Attenberger; a sister, Lida Gilster; and half-brothers, Oscar and Raymond Attenberger.

She is survived by daughters Smila (Clarence) Erickson of Cloquet and Betty (Dennis) Kolenda of Chetek, Wis.; a sister, Mabel (George) Fischer of Mapleton, Minn.; grandchildren Becky (Jay) Tremblay, Michael (Linda Bammert) Erickson, Mark (Lisa) Erickson, Vernon (fiance Jennifer Shenett) Erickson, Craig (Michelle) Kolenda, and Shandra Kolenda; great-grandchildren Angie (John) Irvine and Melissa Tremblay, Nathan, Corey and Matthew Erickson, and KellyJo, Matthew and Hanna Kolenda; and several nephews.
A memorial talk will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Kingdom Hall, 4602 Arrowhead Road. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Jane E. Houston (nee Colburn)
Jane E. Houston (nee Colburn), 85, formerly of Cloquet, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001.
She was the beloved wife of George F. Houston; stepmother of Susan (John) Fortune and Sally (Lee) Wolcott. She is further survived by five step grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; other relatives and friends.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. today in Milwaukee Protestant Home, 2449 N. Downer Ave., Milwaukee. Private interment in Cloquet. If desired, memorials preferred to charity of donor's choice.
