GEORGE NICHOLAS HAIDOS
George Nicholas Haidos, 76, of Hibbing died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, in University Medical Center-Mesabi, Hibbing.
Survivors includes his wife of 52 years, Eleanor; a son, Nicholas; a brother, Tom; a sister, Thana Lopac; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday with 7 p.m. prayer service and 7:30 p.m. Masonic service in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday St. Michael's Orthodox Church, Hibbing. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery.

EUGENE FRANCIS BAKER
Eugene Francis Baker, 77, formerly of Esko, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home, where he had resided since 1999.
He was born April 10, 1924, in Bertha, Minn., the son of George and Mabel (Piquette) Baker. He married Bernice A. Gault on Sept. 23, 1944, in Duluth. Eugene worked as a foreman for U.S. Steel's Duluth Works, retiring in 1979 after 38 years of service.

Eugene will be fondly remembered as a "family man" for the love and support he gave to his family. Among his many interests, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseshoes, cribbage leagues, was known as being a "Jack of all trades," and was always willing to help anyone.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Floyd Baker.

Eugene was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his wife of 57 years, Bernice of Cloquet; sons Dale (Judy) of Duluth, Robert (Sharon) of Cloquet and Curtis of Superior; daughters Carolyn (Gary) Fredrickson and Lois (Steve) Nynas, both of Esko, Shirley (Arlen) Shanblott of Blaine, Minn., Terry (Michael) Line of Barnum and Lori (Raymond) Feltes of Savage, Minn.; a sister, Leona Doble of Cloquet; brothers Vernon of Proctor, Jerome (Donna) and Earl (Sharon), both of Cloquet, and LeRoy (Ardella) of Sula, Mont.; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many friends.

The family wishes to offer their heartfelt appreciation to the Nopeming staff on second floor east for the wonderful loving care and support extended to Eugene and the family members over the past several years.

FRANK W. OVEN
Frank W. Oven, 77, of Mountain Iron died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Alda; children William (Mary), Connie (Douglas) Hall, Jackie and James; four grandchildren; a brother; and three sisters.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass Thursday in Resurrection Catholic Church, Eveleth. Burial in Eveleth cemetery. Arrangements by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

SANDRA J. SERRATORE
Sandra J. Serratore passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, in Grand Rapids, at the end of a long battle with cancer.
She was born Oct. 12, 1934, in Ada, Minn., the daughter of Nettie and Alfred Loftman. She was raised by Iver and Ida Westad of Fertile, Minn., after the death of her parents. Sandra graduated from Fertile Beltrami High School in 1953. She then attended Bemidji State University, where she received her teaching degree. She taught in the Nashwauk-Keewatin School District for over 20 years.

Sandra was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and friend.

She is survived by many who were touched by her love including her husband, Frank; sons Frank Jr. (Carol), Anthony (Crystal), Joe (Kathy) and Tom (Cindy); her daughter, Juli; grandchildren Nina, Nick, Tom, Tim, Carly, Samantha, Steven, Matthew, Carina, Megan and Emily; brothers and sisters Roger (Shirley), Ted (Violet), Beverly (John), Clarice and Lavonne; and in-laws Victoria (Harold) Durheim and John Sapan.
PRIVATE SERVICE for family in Peterson Funeral Chapel. There will be fellowship and luncheon for friends and family at 4 p.m. Thursday in Mary Immaculate Catholic Church Social Hall, Coleraine. Family prefers memorials to Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

LONNIE L. LAUGHLIN
Lonnie L. Laughlin, 42, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in his home in Cohasset.
Survivors include his wife, Gale; sons Anthony and Martin Laughlin and James Gilbert; a daughter, Emily Laughlin; grandchildren Kyle and Megan; his parents, Wallace and Delores Laughlin; a sister, Theresa (Charles McClendon) Laughlin; and a brother, Ken (Jo Marie) Laughlin.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday and service at 11 a.m. Friday in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cohasset. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, (218) 326-4000.

HOPE SIERRA AMESBURY
Hope Sierra Amesbury, infant daughter of Charles "Chico" Jr. and Tera (Olson) Amesbury, of Two Harbors died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Hope was born Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, with her sisters, Bailey Lane and Mariah Saige.

In addition to her parents and sisters, she is survived by her grandparents, Gary and Linda Olson, Sandy Eskola and Melvin Beck, Bruce Eskola and Dori Sivertson, and Charles Sr. and Marie Amesbury, all of Two Harbors; great-grandparents Paul and Marion Sellman of Two Harbors, Virginia Otterblad of Maple Grove, Minn., and Clifford and Lillian Sundstrom of French River; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, including special friends, Amanda and Jesse Flock, who helped select her name.

"Hope" is one of the three cardinal virtues, along with faith and charity. "Hope" is the virtue that has survived the longest. "Sierra" brings to mind pure air, snowy peak and heavenly mountains intertwined with earth and sky.
PRIVATE SERVICES will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.

SOPHIE A. CHIARELLO
Sophie A. Chiarello, 77, of Virginia died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born July 7, 1924, in Gilbert to Jacob and Mary (Mehlech) Luzovich and graduated from Gilbert High School. She worked as an X-ray technician in Hibbing for a few years.

On May 25, 1946, she married David Chiarello in Gilbert and had been a longtime Virginia resident. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Virginia and Iron Queen Lodge.

Sophie was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Mary Burns and Carolyn Mattson; brothers Jack Luzovich, and Joe and Frank Lopp.

Survivors include her husband, David; a son, David (Kathy) Chiarello of Hermantown; a daughter, Kathleen (Ron) McLaughlin of Minneapolis; grandsons David III and Nicholas; sisters Jenny Smith of League City, League, Texas, and Mary Lou (Gary) Jacobson of Gilbert; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 9 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Thursday, with a 10 a.m. Knights of Columbus and parish rosary in Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Virginia. Burial in Calvary cemetery, Virginia. Arrangements by Landmark Funeral Home, Virginia.

RONALD D. ALLAN
Ronald D. Allan, 60, of rural Bovey died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, in his home.
He was born Sept. 5, 1941, to Archibald and Martha (Hall) Allan in Baxter, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1959. In 1960, he enlisted in the Army and also was united in marriage to Marietta Lilgreen on Nov. 4, 1960, in Salinas, Calif. While in the service, he was a rifle coach in the Colorado School of Mines and a ROTC instructor. He was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War, retiring as a master sergeant in 1980. In 1981, he was a maintenance supervisor in Leisure Hills Care Center, retiring in 1999.

He was instrumental in setting up Wildwood Township, serving on the board. He also served on the Itasca County Township Association. He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and served as a trustee. He was a member of the Minnesota Emu Growers Alliance and American Emu Association, where he was a former board member.

He is survived by his wife, Marietta; daughters Shelly (Rick) Espeland of Des Moines, Iowa, and Kay (Harlan) Berg of Ogilvie, Minn.; sons Ty (Denise) and Michael (Corrine) Allan, both of Hibbing; a sister, Patricia (Kenn) Fideldy of Grand Rapids; his mother, Martha Schack of Grand Rapids; and 13 grandchildren.
SERVICE: 11 a.m. today in Community Presbyterian Church, Grand Rapids, the Rev. Peter Nord officiating. Burial with full military honors in Harris cemetery, Harris Township, Minn. Memorials are preferred to Community Presbyterian Church, Grand Rapids. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

ALTA (PIPER) ANDREWS
Centenarian
Alta (Piper) Andrews, 106, of Virginia died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in Virginia Regional Medical Center.
She was born Alta Maude Piper on Dec. 22, 1894, to George and Mary (Smith) Piper in Hurley, S.D., graduating from Hurley High School in 1916. She attended Normal School Training and taught in one-room schools for the 1916 and 1917 school years. Alta was united in marriage to Henry Lee Andrews on Feb. 28, 1917, in Hurley. She moved to rural Onamia, Minn., in 1923 with her husband and two sons. She led an active life in the community for 25 years as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, Ferndale 4-H Club leader, active in South Harbor Farmer's Club, Onamia Grange and Onamia Methodist Church. She served as the South Onamia Community correspondent for both the Isle Messenger and Mille Lacs County Times in the '30s and '40s. She moved to California in 1948, living in Riverside and Grass Valley. She returned to Minnesota in 1949, living in Floodwood, Duluth, Zim and Virginia.

Alta spent 20 months in Bolivia in 1966 and 1967, with her missionary son, Bob, and family. She spent her final years in a nursing home in Virginia Regional Medical Center. Alta was a loving person, deeply involved with her family and others. After her family was raised, she and Lee cared for 16 foster children. She will be missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her parents; seven siblings; her husband, Lee, on May 2, 1961; and a daughter-in-law, Linda on, Jan. 3, 2000.

Alta is survived by a brother, Max (Wauna) Piper of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; sons Harold (Inez) of Zim, Budd (Marguerite) of Pelican Rapids, Minn., Paul of Onamia and Robert (Joyce) of Floodwood; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Saturday in Hope Lutheran Church, Floodwood, Pastor Robert Andrews will direct the service and the Rev. Harold Andrews will deliver the memorial message. Burial in Hope Lutheran cemetery, Floodwood. Memorials are preferred to Onamia United Methodist Church or Hope Lutheran Church, Floodwood. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Floodwood.

JUSTICE MIKEL RELLER
Justice Mikel Reller, infant son of Stephanie Reller and Philip Baker, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Damiean Herdenberg of Cloquet; his maternal grandparents, Tom and Marty Reller of Esko; paternal grandparents Patricia and Donald Anderson of Atkinson, Minn.; maternal great-grandmother Ruth Wirtz of Esko; maternal great-grandfather William Devall of Belton, S.C.; special uncle Tony Reller of Cloquet; and many other aunts and uncles.
Visitation: 6 until the 7 p.m. memorial service Friday in Nelson Funeral Care Chapel, Cloquet. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet.

EMPI S. FISHER
Empi S. Fisher, 89, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Venice, Fla.
She was born June 29, 1912, in Iron Belt, Wis. She graduated valedictorian from Ashland High School in 1930, and worked for the Ashland Daily Press until 1953, when she moved to Duluth. She worked for Harcourt Brace Publishing Co. as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Duluth Republican Club and Soroptimist Club. She was an avid bowler and reader.

Empi was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Fisher; and her daughter, Barbara Foster.

She is survived by her son, David Fisher of Wausau; her daughter, Grace Fisher Fraedrich of Venice; sons-in-law Karl Fraedrich of Venice and George Foster of Laurium, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
SERVICE: 1 p.m. Saturday in Frost Home for Funerals, Ashland. Graveside inurnment will be held in Mount Hope cemetery, Ashland. Memorials may be made to Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Duluth.
