Lyman E. Hawbaker
Lyman E. Hawbaker, 78, of Cohasset, former longtime resident of St. Paul, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, in Leisure Hills Care Center in Grand Rapids.
He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Kimberly Hawbaker; a sister, Violet Schwartz; brothers Howard and Lloyd Hawbaker; and two grandsons.
Memorial service: 6 p.m. Monday in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Burial in Wildwood cemetery, Cohasset.

Robert Paul Swanson Sr.
Robert Paul Swanson Sr., 78, of McGregor died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, in Brainerd.
Visitation: noon until the 2:30 p.m. service Thursday in McGregor Funeral Home, McGregor.

WALTER F. PETROSKE
Walter F. Petroske, 81, of Grand Rapids died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, in the CN & C Unit, Itasca Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Alvina; a daughter, Jan Parke of Trubaco Canyon, Calif.; a son, Ron (Betty) Stevens of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services: 10 a.m. Thursday in Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel, historic Fort Snelling with 11 a.m. Committal in Fort Snelling National cemetery, Assembly area 5, Minneapolis. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, (218) 326-4000.

LUCILLE F. CUMMINGS
Lucille F. Cummings, 89, of Deer River died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in Deer River.
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Thursday with 7 p.m. Rosary service in Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River. Service at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Deer River. Burial in St. Joseph's cemetery, Ball Club, Minn.

HARRY ZUB
Harry Zub, 81, of International Falls died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in International Falls.
Survivors include brothers Edward and Roy Zub; and many nieces and nephews.
Service: 2 p.m. Thursday in Evangelical Covenant Church, International Falls. Burial in St. Thomas Catholic cemetery, International Falls. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary Inc., International Falls.

PATRICIA "PAT" ANN SKELLY
Patricia "Pat" Ann Skelly, 62, of Cohasset, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001 in her home, following a courageous struggle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 15, 1939, to John and Antonia (Maras) Rapinac in Hibbing, where she grew up and attended schools, graduating from Hibbing High School in 1957. On June 18, 1966, she married Larry E. Skelly in Cohasset, where they made their home. Pat worked many years at the Blandin Tree Nursery in Grand Rapids. She was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Cohasset and the VFW Auxiliary in Grand Rapids. Pat was one who never complained and she was loved by so many people.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Rapinac; and a nephew, Vince Bianconi.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; daughters Kim (Dick) DeBlieck and Leslie Skelly, all of Bloomington, Minn., Jodi (Shawn) Weber of Hibbing and Shelby Skelly of Sauk Rapids, Minn.; son Kevin (Susanna) Culver of East Calais, Vt.; sisters Winifred (Bob) Bianconi of Savage, Minn., and Celine Keenan of Burnsville, Minn.; brother Michael (Dawn) Rapinac of Buhl; and grandchildren Rebecca and Danielle DeBlieck, Seth Weber and Blaine Culver.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m., with wake prayer service at 6 p.m. Wednesday in St. Augustine's Catholic Church, Cohasset, where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday. Arrangements are by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

JOHN A. GILMER
John A. Gilmer, 93, of Remer, Minn., died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, in Cuyuna Range Medical Center, Crosby.
Survivors include daughters Jacqueline (Willis) Landrith, Mary Jean Abel, Billy Kay Gilmer and Patsy Jo Gilmer; a brother, Stan; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Friday in Rowe Funeral Home, Remer, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial in Fairview cemetery, Remer.

MIKE "MITCH" SIROVINA
Mike "Mitch" Sirovina, 87, of Chisholm died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in Buchanan Nursing Home, Chisholm.
He was born June 6, 1914, in Chisholm to Lubo and Mary (Dimich) Sirovina. He was a graduate of Chisholm High School. During his lifetime he had traveled throughout the United States, working at different jobs. He retired from U.S. Steel in 1978 after more than 30 years of service.

He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing with his buddies in Canada and at the local fishing holes. Later on his time was spent enjoying fishing, swimming and camping, especially with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; three brothers; and a sister.

Survivors include his children Ellen (John) Macynski and Raymond (Jeri) Pahule, both of Chisholm; grandchildren Cory, Ron, Lenny and Renee; great-grandchildren Luke and Haylee; a brother, Marko of Chisholm; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service Chapel, Chisholm, Father Steve Daigle of St. Joseph's Catholic Church officiating. Inurnment in Chisholm cemetery.

E. ROBERT "BOB" AMBORN
E. Robert "Bob" Amborn, 80, of Grand Rapids died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, in Itasca Nursing Home.
Bob is survived by his children, Kristin (Rod) Dimich, Reid (Pam) Amborn, Mark (Lori) Amborn and Michelle (Brad) Smith; and grandchildren Roni Dimich, Kisha Dimich, Nikolas Dimich, Kyle Amborn, Jesse Amborn, Alyssa Amborn, Noel Amborn, Kramer Smith and Nevada Smith.
Visitation: 4 until the 6 p.m. prayer service Friday in Libbey Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Rapids. Burial in Harris Township cemetery, Grand Rapids. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, (218) 326-4000.

ROY ELLWOOD KIRKMAN
Roy Ellwood Kirkman, 93, longtime resident of Virginia, passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born Feb. 10, 1908, in Mason, Wis., the son of Andrew and Sarah (Nelson) Kirkman. His family moved to Virginia when Roy was a young child. He grew up in Virginia and attended the local schools. Roy was married to Arlette L. Nelson on June 21, 1930, and they made their home in Virginia ever since.

When Roy was a young man, he worked for the Virginia and Rainy Lake Mill and during the Depression years of the 1930s worked at various jobs to support his family. He was then hired by the Oliver Mining Co. (USX) in 1943, retiring in 1973 after 30 years of service.

Roy loved his family and friends, and enjoyed his 28 years of retirement, tending his flower and vegetable garden, and working with wood. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Virginia, Virginia Pioneers Club, Virginia Senior Citizens Club, and the Men's Breakfast Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; seven sisters; and twin granddaughters. Roy was the last surviving member of his family of 13 children.

Roy is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Arlette; sons Ellwood (Betty) Kirkman of Duluth and Erling (Myrna) Kirkman of Ely; daughters Diane Kirkman and Darlene (Ted) Greiner, both of Virginia; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Wednesday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Virginia, Pastor Duane Bottjen and Brenda Tibbetts, A.I.M. co-officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood cemetery in Virginia.

Elizabeth "Liz" Prebich
Elizabeth "Liz" Prebich, 52, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, in her home surrounded by her family.
The former St. Louis County commissioner and longtime family and children's advocate was born May 9, 1949, and grew up in Hibbing. She graduated from Hibbing High School and the College of St. Catherine in social work. She served 14 years as St. Louis County Commissioner. Liz chaired the County Board in 1990 and 1996 and while on the County Board was a strong advocate for issues that deeply concerned her. She was instrumental in the founding and development of the 132-mile Mesabi Trail. She strongly supported St. Louis County's efforts in waste management, environmental services and national resource preservation.

Liz was highly regarded by federal, state and county officials as an effective spokesperson for county government. She was active in the National Association of Counties and Association of Minnesota Counties. Liz chaired the National Association of County Human Services Steering Committee and was honored with a national award established in her name, "The Elizabeth Prebich Distinguished Leadership Award for County Human Services Nationwide" which will be awarded annually. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum has named the Burlington Northern Coach A14 the "Liz Prebich" in her honor.

She was preceded in death by her father, Emil Prebich.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Butorac, and children Sarah and Mark; her mother, Mary Prebich of Hibbing; a sister, Kay Petkovich (Dr. Narcis) of Toronto and sons Gregory and Geoffrey; a brother, Rick (Peg) of Eveleth and sons Joe and Tom; a brother, Bob (Faye) of Burnsville, Minn., and daughters Debbie and Stephanie.

During her long illness, Liz showed strength, courage and determination and was an inspiration to her family and many friends. Her family wishes to thank everyone for the many expressions of love and support that Liz received during her illness.
Visitation: 9 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Wednesday in Holy Spirit Church, 306 Second St. S., Virginia. Burial at 4 p.m. in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing. Pallbearers are Terry Aronson, Mike Forsman, John Harris, Bill Moeller, Remmert op de Weegh and Steve Rauker.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to charity of donor's choice.

VERNON L. WARNER
Vernon L. Warner, 72, of Hibbing passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2001.
Vern was born Sept. 22, 1928, in Hibbing. On Sept. 14, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer, God took his favorite fireman and carpenter through heaven's gates to rest in peace and suffer no more. He will forever be in our hearts and fond memories will live on. Our world has lost a great husband, father and man, but heaven has gained a gifted angel.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marvel (Betters) Warner; children Mark (Donna) Warner, Debra Warner, Tammy (Greg) Lindahl, Kathy (Joe) Bretto, Tracy (Dan) Campbell and Michael Warner; grandchildren Jason, Stacey, Ryan, Amber, Matt, Amy, Joseph, Zachary and Trevor; a great-grandson, Austin; brothers Lyle and Wallace; a sister, Hazel; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 11:30 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in First Lutheran Church, Hibbing, the Rev. Wendell Shiell officiating. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.
