Lawrence William Winberg, 86, of Hibbing died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, in his home.

Survivors include his wife, Christine; a son, Roger; a daughter, Betty C.; many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in First Lutheran Church, Hibbing. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

BART B. JOHNSON
Bart B. Johnson, 25, of Hawthorne died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Stephanie; his parents, Dave and June Johnson; a sister, Sharla (Randol) Ruffi; maternal grandmother, Jessie Swanson; paternal grandmother, Corlin Johnson; nephews and nieces.
Visitation: begins 5 p.m. Tuesday in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home and continues from 11 a.m. until the noon service Wednesday in Peace Lutheran Church, Poplar. Interment in Parkview cemetery, Hawthorne.

WILLIAM MARTIN SCHUETTE
William Martin Schuette, 87, of St. Paul died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, in Grand Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Laurel C. (Poole); sons Robert A. (Mary Rossi) and Roger W. (Gail); a daughter, Pamela J. (Charles) Peterson; nine grandchildren; a sister; two brothers.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Wednesday in Cross Lutheran Church, 1945 Prosperity Road, Maplewood, Minn. Memorials in lieu of flowers are preferred to Parkinson's or Alzheimer's organizations or to the donor's choice.

Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

ANITA CATHERINE BURNS
Anita Catherine Burns, 87, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001.

Survivors include daughters Ann (John) Pellman of Maple and Julie (Jose) Chay of Tustin, Calif.; two grandsons; two nephews and a niece.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Tuesday in Brule Presbyterian Church. Inurnment in Pine Ridge cemetery, Brule.

ELIZABETH SILVER
Elizabeth Silver, 80, of Aitkin died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, in the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in the Narrow Community Church, Outing, the Rev. Donald H. Norman officiating. Burial in Pine Ridge cemetery, Emily.
Arrangements by Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

JOHN STEVENSON MAcARTHUR
John S. MacArthur, 89, Beaver Bay, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, in the Minnesota Veteran's Home in Silver Bay.
He was born Feb. 12, 1912, to Alexander and Mary (Stevenson) MacArthur in Martinstown, Ont., and as a child moved to Ashland where he grew up and attended schools. He worked as a baker for several years, then served in the Army in Panama during World War II. In the early 1950s he was employed in the construction of Silver Bay. He had made his home in Beaver Bay since 1956. He was employed in the power house of the former Reserve Mining Co. until his retirement in 1977. He also served on the Beaver Bay Volunteer Fire Department.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, five sisters and his wife, Harriet, in 1986.

John is survived by his sons Michael of Carson, Calif., Joel (special friend Simona) of Hollywood, Calif., and John D. (Alie) of Silver Bay; a daughter Kathy (Richard) Helvig of Mankato, Minn.; brothers William (Irene) and Daniel (Gladys), both of Ashland; sisters Edith Matthews of Los Angeles and B. Noreen Gurske of Ashland; grandchildren Julie (Sherman) Kranz and Lori (Eric) Colvin; and seven great-grandchildren.
Service: There will be no service. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

MARY JOYCE HOGAN
Mary Joyce Hogan, 75, of Hoyt Lakes died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, in her residence.
She is survived by sons Michael A. (Marie) and Timothy D. (Bethany); 10 grandchildren; special niece, Sharon Libert; nieces and nephews; and special companion, Riley.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday with 6 p.m. parish prayers in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora, and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass Monday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Hoyt Lakes.

BEATRICE L. THOMAS-LESAR
Beatrice L. Thomas-Lesar, 77, of Ely died in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001.
She was born in Iron on May 5, 1924, to Edward and Hulda (Erickson) Hautula. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ely and was active in church events. Bea was very fond of ceramics.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Howard Hautala; and her husband, Fred Lesar, in 1996.

She is survived by a daughter, Audrey Daniels of Britt; sons Robert (Carol) Thomas of Zim, Ralph (Dianne) Thomas Jr. of Austell, Ga., and Dean (Linda) Thomas of Orange, Calif.; a brother, Marvin (Naomi) Hautala of Mesa Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Friday in Grace Lutheran Church, the Rev. William Fossum officiating. Burial in Ely cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

SHIRLEY ELLA INGLEBRET WATSON AND EARL DOUGLAS "DOUG" WATSON
Shirley Ella Inglebret Watson, 77, of Grand Rapids passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, in Regions Hospital, St. Paul.
Earl Douglas "Doug" Watson, 78, of Grand Rapids passed away quietly Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, CNC Unit.

Shirley and Doug are survived by their children, Marie Ballard, Barbara (Allen) Nicholson, Sharon, Mark (Joanne), Stanley (Kris), Andrew (Judy), Dawn Carol (Ken) Splittstoesser and Christie; 26 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Shirley is also survived by her sisters, Joan Duncan, Thora (Martin) Munson and Sonja (Les) Torkola; and brothers Clifford (Darlene) and Jerry (Lee).

Doug is also survived by his sisters, Helen (Torgeir) Haugland and Janet (Bjarne) Christenson; and brothers Stuart (Eleanor), Everett (Linda), Lesley (Elida), Albert (Jeanette) and Morris (Giesela).

RACHEL F. LEPPALA
Rachel F. Leppala, 86, of Nashwauk died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, in Homestead Nursing Home, Deer River.
She is survived by a daughter, Ardelle (John K.) Antonelli; grandchildren John A. (Timika) Antonelli and Jacqueline A. Antonelli; a great-grandchild, Toriana; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: noon until the 2 p.m. service Friday in Nashwauk Lutheran Church. Interment in Nashwauk cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.

BERNARD M. "BING" GRAHEK
Bernard M. "Bing" Grahek died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in Nunica, Mich.
He was born July 20, 1926, in Ely, was a World War II Army veteran and graduate of Creighton University. Bing resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 31 years and worked in the health care field during that time. He was a retired health care administrator. In his lifetime, he was active in many health care organizations, as well as numerous other charitable organizations. His most memorable accomplishment was probably, prior to entering the Army, becoming the youngest Scoutmaster at 17. Bing was always ready to serve his fellow man.

Bing is survived by his children, Michael (Michele) Grahek of White Bear Township, Minn., Patricia (Steven) Grahek of Andover, Minn., and Mark (Ann) Grahek of Nunica; grandchildren Paul Michael, Carley Madison and Chloe Elizabeth; a sister, Anne Marie Grahek of Ely; and a brother, Dr. Larry (Inez) Grahek of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
MEMORIAL MASS AND BURIAL:1 p.m. Saturday in St. Anthony's Church, Ely. An additional memorial Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 27 in St. Francis Xavier Church in Central, Phoenix. Those desiring a memorial, are asked to remember Eperanca, 1911 W. Earll Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85015-9985 or St. Vincent De Paul, Phoenix.

WALTER "BUD" PAULSEN
Walter "Bud" Paulsen, 77, of Aitkin died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Sorenson-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin, and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Aitkin United Methodist Church, Aitkin.

DR. JACK P. "DOC" GRAHEK
Ely mayor for 27 years
Dr. Jack P. "Doc" Grahek, 90, of Ely died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, in Golden Crest Nursing Home, Hibbing, with his daughters by his side.
He was born May 1, 1911, in Ely to Jacob and Katherine (Muhvich) Grahek. He grew up in Ely as the oldest of six children and graduated from Ely High School in 1928. He attended Vermilion Community College and Marquette Medical School in Milwaukee. He did his internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth and opened his practice in Ely in 1940. He practiced medicine in Ely for 40 years, retiring July 1, 1979. In that time, he delivered more than 2,500 babies and cared for countless Ely residents.

In 1954, he was elected Ely's mayor on the platform of getting a new hospital and in 1958 the new Ely- Bloomenson Community Hospital opened its doors.

He served as mayor of Ely for 27 years. During his political career, he brought to Ely a hospital, sewage treatment plant, multiple public housing facilities and an airport that is among the finest ever seen in a community of 5,000.

His accomplishments and awards were innumerable, but included the C.C. Ludwig award for Outstanding Municipal Service, Outstanding Minnesota Citizen Award, Outstanding Civic Service Award and the Arrowhead Community College Distinguished College Service Award. He was honored in 1977 by the citizens of Ely with J.P. Grahek Recognition Day. He served on the delegation to the funeral of Yugoslav President Josef Tito with Vice President Fritz Mondale in 1978. In 1987, he was appointed unanimously to the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota. Most recently, Ely again honored him by declaring May 1, 1998, Dr. J.P. Grahek Day.

He lived in Ely his whole life and dedicated his political career, heart and soul to the betterment of the town he loved. His motto was, "It isn't what you need or how bad you need it, but who do you know and what are they prepared to give you."

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Verna, in 1958; his second wife, Vi, in 1976; a brother, William Grahek; and sister, Louise Cooper.

A loving father and grandfather, he is survived by daughters Marty (John) Tourville and Trish (Bill) Durie, both of Hibbing; grandchildren Brittany, Matthew, Kathryn Tourville, Jack and Will Durie; sisters Kathryn (Joe) Klun, Marie (Ken) Smith and Ann (Wally) Wotzka; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely, with prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ely. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
