RAYMOND C. THOMPSON
Raymond C. Thompson, 87, of Grand Marais died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, in the Minnesota Veterans Home, Silver Bay.
He was born April 5, 1914, to Raymond and Bertha (Lubken) Thompson in Pueblo, Colo. When he was five years old, his family traveled on the ship America to Grand Marais, and settled on Maple Hill, where he grew up and attended the Maple Hill School, and was a lifelong resident of the Grand Marais area. He worked on the family farm, graded lumber at the sawmill, and worked on the construction of Highway 61. Raymond served in the Army from 1941-45 in New Guinea and the Philippines. After the war, he returned home and was worked as an aide for the U.S. Forest Service until retiring in the early '70s. Raymond enjoyed walking to town, hunting, fishing, gardening, trips to Florida, and meals with his family.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; brother Don; and sister Virginia Dickert.

He is survived by brothers Clarence (June) and Walter (Irene), both of Grand Marais, and Cole (Deloris) of Duluth; and nieces and nephews Don, Deb, Ryan, Greg, Richard, Crystal, Gail, Michelle, Damora and Wiley.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Grand Marais. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery, Grand Marais.

ARNE P. JARVE
Arne P. Jarve, 83, of Cloquet died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home, Duluth.
He was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Gilbert to Mike and Suzanna Jarve. Arne served in the Army as a corporal during World War II, where he received the American Theater Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Unit Award. He moved to Cloquet and worked for the Conwed Corporation from 1947 to 1948. Arne was united in marriage to Mary Anderson at St. Casimirs Catholic Church in Cloquet in 1951. He worked for the Potlatch Corporation from 1948 until retiring in 1982.

Arne was also a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club, and enjoyed fixing things. Arne will be remembered for his quick wit and great sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Filmer, Alvar, Allen, Armond and Arvo; and sisters Ora Pike, Ina Pajari and Ann Pike.

Arne is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, Jim (Kathy) Jarve of Esko; daughters June (Gary) Miller of Tucson, Ariz., and Janelle (Scott) Bryant of Cloquet; a brother, Arthur (Lorraine) Jarve of Embarrass; grandchildren Cory and Brian Miller, Jessica, Katie and Jon Jarve, and Heather, Jessie and Nikki Bryant; and a great-grandson, Ryan Miller. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service Wednesday in Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet. Inurnment services in New Calvary cemetery, Cloquet with military honors provided by the Cloquet Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the Nelson Funeral Care reception area. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.

REGINA HELEN (PASKO) PASKE
Regina Helen (Pasko) Paske, 89, of Cloquet died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Cloquet to Alex and Pelagia Novacinski. She was married to Martin Paske for 60 years until his death on December 11, 1991.

Regina will be fondly remembered as a wonderful mother and a very good cook.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin; and brothers Stanley, Marion, Bernard and Ben Novacinski.

Regina is survived by a daughter, Beatrice Helin of Sturgeon Lake; sons William of Cloquet and Robert (MaryAnn) of Torrence, Calif.; brothers Louis (Nancy), Walter (Jean), Henry and Zegment (JoAnn) Novacinski, all of Cloquet; sisters Bernice (Leonard) Himango of Duluth, Stella Esala and Helen (John) Meger, both of Cloquet; grandchildren Rick and Gary Pasko, Traci Buxton, and John and Arthur Pasko; and great-grandchildren Jordan Buxton, Danielle, Andrew and Kaitlyn Pasko.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet.

MILAN GROZDANICH
Milan Grozdanich, 78, of Pengilly died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne; sons Terry (Anne) and Michael (Lynette); daughters Pam (Jim) Kolar and Susan (Tim) Dopp; two brothers; two sisters; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
PRIVATE FAMILY MEMORIAL SERVICE was held in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. Inurnment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing.

EARL "BUD" BELFORD
Earl "Bud" Belford, 74, of Lakeland, Minn., died peacefully in his home on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Earl was born July 28, 1927, to Robert and Pearl (Morrison) Belford in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and was raised in Superior. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Earl married Maxine Dalbec on May 6, 1950, in Superior. He was employed as a boilermaker from 1944 until his retirement in 1989.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Aurora and the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Lodge 647. Until his illness confined him to bed, Earl enjoyed traveling, being with family and friends, playing cards, fishing and hunting, sports of all kinds, tending to his yard, trips to the casino, and the many projects he created in his garage. Since being confined to his bed, the company of his daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, holding his beloved great-grandson, calls and visits from other family and friends, and a game of cribbage made his day.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine on Nov. 29, 1991; his parents in 1997 and 2000; and a sister, Beverly Stavig in 1981.

He is survived by his daughters, Debra (Butch) Anttila of Aurora, Linda (Maurizio) Delcaro of Lindstrom, Minn., Brenda (Jim) Mingo of Ashfork, Ariz., Rebecca (Roger) Byzewski of Minneapolis and Anna (Larry) Meehan of Eveleth; grandchildren Kristin (Chad) Coudron, Kelly (Marty) Momsen, Kylene Anttila, Maurizio and Domenica Delcaro, Ashley, Zachary and Journey Mingo, Lucy and Luke Byzewski, and Brooke, Michele and Samantha Meehan of Eveleth; great-grandson Anthony Earl Coudron; brother Robert (Nita) Belford of St. Augustine, Fla.; and a sister, Janet (William) White of Superior.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. Mass of Christian burial Friday in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Aurora, Father Joseph Sirba as celebrant. Burial in Rauha cemetery. Military honors accorded by the American Legion Post 241 of Aurora. Memorials may be directed to the SMDC East Range Hospice, 1201 Eighth St. S., Virginia, MN 66742. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home.

DOROTHY R. "DOFF" CALLIES
Dorothy R. "Doff" Callies, 72, of Hibbing died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; her mother, Renee Bloor; children David (Jean) Osborne, Jonathan (Sandra) Osborne, Frederic (Amber) Callies and Ivanette (Herbert) Hanson; two sisters; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home Chapel, Hibbing.

WILJO R. KORPELA
Wiljo R. Korpela, 78, of Automba Township, Carlton County, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, in Automba Township.
He was born July 3, 1923, in Automba Township to Gust and Minna (Fantt) Korpela. Wiljo attended Kalevala School and then helped on his parents' farm. He left Automba Township for a short time to work for Erie Mining in Hoyt Lakes, only to come back to Automba Township where he continued to farm and work in the woods. He liked to play guitar and help people with different tasks.

Wiljo was preceded in death by his parents, Gust and Minna Korpela; brothers Hugo, Hans and Art Korpela; and sisters Ellen Luopa and Violet Jay.

Survivors include brothers Tauno (Elsie) Korpela of Cromwell and Arvo (Vivian) Korpela of Portland, Ore.; sisters Hulda Hill, Linnea Autio and Florence (Art) Newgren, all of Cromwell; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Eagle Lake Apostolic Lutheran Church, Eagle Township, Carlton County. Burial in Eagle Lake cemetery. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

HELEN CIATTI
Helen Ciatti, 90, of Chisholm died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001.
She is survived by her son, George (Patricia) of Chisholm; grandchildren David J. and Janet (Tito) DeGuzman; a great-grandson, Jonathan DeGuzman; sisters Eva Kosiak and Catherine Sannes; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturday in Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Chisholm. Service at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, Chisholm. Interment in Chisholm cemetery.

EMMA "EMMIE" M. JOHNSON
Emma "Emmie" M. Johnson, 90, of Embarrass died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday in Embarrass Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial in Embarrass cemetery. Arrangements by the Range Funeral Home of Virginia.

LOUIS LEKATZ
Louis Lekatz, 76, of East Camp Street, Ely, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital, with his family at his side.
He was born Oct. 15, 1925, in Ely to Mike and Katherine (Maranich) Lekatz, the 10th of 10 children. As a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, he enlisted with the Navy and served on the USS Saginaw in the South Pacific from 1942-44. Upon returning to Ely, he drove a school bus for the Ely school district. On July 1, 1950, he married Joyce Laurich and remained in Ely to raise his family and became active in community organizations.

Louis was the Ely civil defense director for many years, winning numerous national and state recognition awards. He was president of the Ely Safety Council and developed programs for road and safety checks, bicycle safety and pedestrian safety. He was also past firearms safety instructor and member of the Ely Jaycees and Ely Rotary Club. Louis also owned and operated the bus line, bringing the miners to Sibley, Zenith and Pioneer Mines of Ely until they all closed. He worked for LTV Steel and retired after 25 years of service with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Paul, Peter and Joseph.

Louis is survived by his wife, Joyce; a son, Michael (Gail) of Ely; daughters Debra Whiting of Ely and Deidre Ernest of Bloomington, Minn.; brothers Steve (Angie), John (Frances) and Mike Jr., all of Ely; sisters Kathy Beaty and Ann Royal, both of Ely; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

As a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Louis will always be remembered as a family man, devoted to putting them first and foremost in his life. He will be deeply missed by his family and the many friends who came to know Louie and his happy-go-lucky, always-a-kind-word way. He will forever be kept close to their hearts.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 1 p.m. Saturday in Kerntz Funeral Chapel, Ely, with Father James Scheuer officiating. Spring inurnment in Ely cemetery.

FLORENCE ELIZABETH (FLOSSIE) PENGAL
Florence Elizabeth (Flossie) Pengal, 79, of Ely died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, in Ely Bloomenson Hospital.
She was born June 14, 1922, in Tower to Signe and Harry Anderson. Florence was a graduate of Tower-Soudan High School and Northwestern Hospital Nurses Training for a licensed practical nurse. She was a World War II Naval veteran. Her training began at Great Lakes Naval Academy. From there she entered the United States Naval Training School at Bronx, N.Y., where she was selected from WAVE hospital corpsmen at naval stations throughout the country to begin training at Hunter College in New York. She did her service between the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md., and St. Alban's Naval Hospital in New York. She was one of four siblings to have served with the armed forces during World War II.

From 1946 to 1950, she was a private duty nurse and also worked at Northwestern Hospital. On June 23, 1950, she married Frank Pengal in Minneapolis at St. Bridgets Catholic Church. They made their home in Ely where she worked at the Ely Bloomenson Hospital & Nursing Home until her retirement in 1975.

Florence was a long-standing member of the American Legion Auxiliary, former past president and held many other offices. She was also a 50-year-plus member of the American Legion. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Ely Business Women and St. Anthony's Catholic Church. During the '50s and '60s, she was a member of the High Mass Choir, Sweet Adelines and American Legion Trio. She continued singing with the Ely Slovenian Chorus, of which she always said, she was "a good Swede who could sing Slovenian." A highlight was traveling to Slovenia in 1996 on a concert tour.

She was a proud and devoted mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Byron.

She is survived by her husband, Frank, and their children, Frank (Carol) of Hibbing, Roberta (Tom) Zbacnik, Paul (Carol) of Ely and twin daughters Karen (Dr. Jeff) Copeman of Chisholm and Ruth of Ely; grandchildren Tom and Bob Zbacnik, Frank and Christina Pengal, Michael Pengal and Elizabeth Copeman; sisters Gladyce Johnson of Duluth and Donna Mickelson of Mountain Iron; brothers Glenn (Carol) of Scandi and Gilbert (Ellen) of Tower.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ely. The family wishes to thank all family and friends for the prayers, Dr. Sande, Dr. Schwinghamer and staff at EBCH. Memorials preferred to Ely Bloomenson Hospital or the Ely Cancer Society.
