Elwin F. Adams, 83 of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at VA Medical Center, Fargo, North Dakota.
Elwin was born on February 10, 1927, the son of Delbert and Lillie (Faulkner) Adams in the Toad Lake Township of rural Becker County. He attended country school until 8th grade. As a teenager, he left home to work on the Al Eean Farm near Spiritwood, North Dakota. Elwin entered the United States Army in 1945 and received training at Camp Roberts in California. He then went on to Massachusetts before flying to Gander, Newfoundland, where served as a military cook. Elwin returned to the United States by ship and received an honorable discharge in 1946.
Elwin returned to work for Al Eean for many years. In the early 70’s he began working for Clyde Johnson in Park Rapids, brushing out power lines and also started to raise hogs. He continued in the hog business until retiring in 2004 due to ill health. Elwin then moved from his farm to live with his niece Twila and her family until his death.
Elwin is survived by his brother, Cecil (Elenora) Adams of Detroit Lakes, MN; two sisters, Vera Lee of Spokane, WA; Margaret Pickett of Bovey, MN; numerous nieces and nephews.
Elwin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Earl and Kenneth, one sister, Grace Pickett.

Visitiation: Wednesday, December 2, 2009 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at West-Kjos Funeral Home.
Nina C. Johnson, 81, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Monday, November 30, 2009 at Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, Minnesota.
Nina was born on January 25, 1928 the daughter of Nickoloi and Hilda (Hansen) Nelson in the rural Toad Lake Township of Becker County, Minnesota. She attended country school in the Toad Lake Township at District #73. Nina was united in marriage to Duane O. Johnson on July 3, 1947 at First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. They made their home in Detroit Lakes area on Lake Sallie and Nina worked as a cook in District #22 lunch program for many years.
During her retirement years, Nina enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening, embroidering and especially enjoyed walking through the woods near their home.
Nina is survived by her husband of sixty-two years, Duane O. Johnson of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; four children, Duane (Tammie) Johnson Jr. of Lengby, Minnesota; Charlotte (William) Stoltzman of Richmond, Minnesota; Milo (Dianne) Johnson of New York Mills, Minnesota; Cindy (Charles Brown) Dibley of Audubon, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Kirstin (Jorge) Morales, Wade (Amber) Johnson, Terry (Kim) Stoltzman, Jason (Barb) Stoltzman, Tally Fernholz, Mina Johnson, Cassie (Chris) Dagenais, Eric Dibley and Nathan (Julie Hedlund) Dibley; twelve great-grandchildren; one brother, Nick (Virginia) Nelson of Sioux City, Iowa; one sister, Sigrid Wacker of Perham, Minnesota; numerous nieces and nephews.
Nina was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and eight sisters.

Verna E. Carlisle, 93, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, November 26, 2007 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Becker County native Sister Martha Esser, 100, of Crookston, died December 4, 2007 at Villa Saint Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston, where she had resided since May 2003. Visitation for Sister Martha will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.. in the chapel of Mount Saint Benedict Monastery. A mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10 at Mt. St. Benedict, with Msgr. Roger Grundhaus as the celebrant and homilist. Arrangements have been entrusted to Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston. LeRoy V. Bergen, 93, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center. Funeral arrangements are pending with David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes. Friends may call between 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 at Holy Rosary Church. The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 4:30 p.m., with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the church. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass at the church on Monday. A mass of Christian burial is set for 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating. Interment will be in Holy Rosary cemetery. Clarence Beaulieu, 75, of Rice Lake, Minn., died on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at the Mahnomen Health Center in Mahnomen. Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Rice Lake Community Center, Rice Lake, with Jim Loud and Sam Muschqua leading the service. Serving as pallbearers were Glenn “Jeb” Bunker, William Beaulieu, Jon Hoell, Jordan Pergl, Ross Beaulieu, Aaron Bellanger, Alex Beaulieu and Darick Beaulieu. George Auginaush, Bert Stevens, Jim Littlewolf, Franklin Heisler, Meredy Littlewolf, Isaac Littlewolf, Marcie Fairbanks and Rob Nefzger served as honorary bearers, along with the Shooting Star Casino staff and the Naytahwaush “Old Timers” softball team. Burial took place at the Rice Lake cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Anderson-Mattson Funeral Home of Mahnomen and Winger, Minn.

Monika Anna Tibbetts, 63 of Bemidji, died Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 10, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Bemidji, with the Rev. Mark Kindem officiating. Interment was at the Hubbard cemetery in Hubbard, Minn. Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji, was entrusted with arrangements.

John W. Niemi, 83, of rural Callaway, died at his home on Monday, December 10, 2007, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, continuing for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Callaway, with the Rev. Del Stohs officiating.
