Thelma was born December 8, 1912 to James Sullivan Foster and Mary Lucy Smallwood in New Bloomsfield, Missouri. Thelma married
Norris Flatland in 1943 and lived in Williams MN from 1945 to 1984 when Norris passed away. Thelma moved to Moorhead in 1984 to be closer to daughter Iris Flatland. Thelma was married
to Julius Herbold from 1987 to 1989 when he passed away. She lived at the Fairmont from 1990 - 1996, and has lived at Moorhead Health Care Center since 1996.
She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Fargo. Family and friends say Thelma had a strong faith in God, and loved to participate in life to the fullest. She will be missed dearly.
She is survived by two sisters; Dorothy Hackworth, MO, Geraldine Terrel, AR, three grandchildren; Jeff Schubert, MT, Kimberly and husband Kevin Huseman, AK, six great-grandchildren; Amanda and husband Bristol Beaujean, Kendall and wife Moriah Huseman, Jason, and Jennifer Huseman all from AK, numerous nieces and nephews.
Daughter; Iris Flatland, four brothers; Charles, Samuel, William, and James Foster, one sister; Hallie Harr, precede her in death.
Memorials preferred or donations to the Parkinson's Foundation in lieu of flowers.

James W. Johnson, 78, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, December 10, 2007 of acute myelogenous leukemia, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Ann Newgard-Larson officiating. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the start of services at the church. Burial will be in Oak Park Church cemetery, Clearbrook, Minn. West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, is handling arrangements for the family.

Gertrude Zurn, 90, of Callaway, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28 at Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway. There will be a Parish Vigil at 7 p.m., followed by a Christian Mothers Rosary at 7:30 p.m., also at the church. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the start of services on Saturday. A mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29 at Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway, with the Rev. Joseph DeCrans officiating. Memorials are preferred sent to Hospice of the Red River Valley or the American Cancer Society. The David-Donehower Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes has been serving the family.

Joseph Kemper, 89, of Waubun, died on December 18, 2007, at the MeritCare Palliative Care Unit in Fargo. A mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, Dec. 21, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Waubun, with the Rev. Bob Leising officiating. Services were entrusted to Anderson-Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Robert Garfield Aakre, 81, died December 18, 2007 at his home in Rollag. He was surrounded by his children, and his loving wife of 59 years, Ardis. He had been under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Rollag Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Greene officiating. Interment is at Rollag Lutheran cemetery, Rollag. Arrangements are being provided by Dobmeier Funeral Home.

Detroit Lakes native Helen M. Shannon, 97, of Sturgis, Mich., died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Sturgis Hospital. Burial took place at Riverside cemetery in Three Rivers. A memorial service will be held later. Memorials may be directed to the Activities Department at Thurston Woods in Sturgis, Mich. Arrangements are being handled by the Eickhoff, Farrand, Halverson Chapel of Three Rivers.

Military Honors were provided by the Twin Valley Nesseth-Lien Post No. 431 of the American Legion. Burial was at Trinity Lutheran cemetery, Twin Valley.
