Ruth E. Grady, 78
Died: Monday, May 01, 2006, in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Ruth Elaine (Leist) Grady, 78, of Moorhead, MN, died peacefully in her home on May 1, 2006, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley surrounded by her loving family.

Ruth was born on July 20, 1927 in Lisbon, ND, the daughter of Clifford and Pearl (Brunton) Leist. She grew up and attended school in Lisbon. She married Tom Grady on January 16, 1971 in Dilworth, MN.

Ruth was a homemaker and a volunteer at the Moorhead Thrift Store for over 20 years. In her leisure time Ruth enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, reading, and spending time with her family. She was a lifetime member of the VFW.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Tom Grady, Moorhead; five children, Diane Anderson, Moorhead, Brian (Brenda) Anderson, Peggy Baumgart, Vicki (Norm) Hansen, all of Lisbon, ND, Debbi (Tom) Paschke, Moorhead; her mother Pearl Leist, Lisbon, ND; three sisters, Jean Fillmore, Grand Forks, ND, Marie (Sid) Parker, Seattle, WA, Kaye (Jim) Martin, Albuquerque, NM; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by two sons, Bertram Leroy Anderson Jr. (Butchie) and Steven Dale Anderson; her father Clifford Leist; and a sister Marilyn Beich.

Rick S. Mathison, 45
Died: Wednesday, June 15, 2005, in the Moorhead Group Home, Moorhead, MN.
Rick Steven Mathison, 45, son of Harlan C. (Matt) & Zona (Larson) Mathison, Moorhead, died Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at the Moorhead Group Home (CCRI).

Rick was born November 18, 1959 in Fargo. He attended Harbor School, The Opportunity School and special education classes in Moorhead, graduating in 1981. He was baptized and confirmed at Elim Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Rick moved to the group home in Village Green in 1980. He was currently employed at Heartland Industries, Moorhead.

Rick will always be remembered as a vocal Twins, Vikings and Spuds fan. He could name the sports teams and quarterbacks, especially those of the Fran Tarkenton era.

Surviving Rick besides his parents is one brother Mark Mathison, St. Cloud, MN and uncle Willis Hanson & cousin Judy Hanson, Lake Crystal, MN.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Hazel L. Westby, 94
Died: Thursday, May 05, 2005, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.
Hazel Lillian Westby was born on April 13, 1911, in Maddock, ND, to Christian and Hanna (Ruud) Westby. She grew up and attended school there. She graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, in 1932 with a major in home economics. She taught for eight years in Minnesota high schools. She completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree, also in home economics, at the University of Wisconsin in 1941. The following year she received a Master's Degree from Teacher's College of Columbia University she has also done additional work at the University of California at Berkeley and New York University.

In 1942 she resumed teaching, this time at the college level. She was on the faculties of Montana State College and the universities of Vermont, Miami and Rhode Island. She was granted a one year leave of absence from the University of Miami in 1951 to be acting head of the Department of Home Economics at Beirut College for Women, the start of her work overseas. While headquartered in the Mideast, she served the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization as a resource person for home economics workshops in Syria. She spent two years in Ecuador as part of a foreign aid program of the State Department. Her name appears as co-author on the first manual for home economics teachers in the Spanish speaking nations of Central and South America. In 1958 she moved from Ecuador to Honduras under the auspices of the Agency for International Development, where she supervised the instruction of home economics teachers in three schools. During this five year period she often found herself in a Jeep, fording a river or negotiating a jungle trail. Back in this country, her pioneering spirit led her to the University of Arizona, where, as an extension agent, she conducted a pilot program on the Papago Indian Reservation. From that experience she developed a new home economics course for the Universit of Arizona. In retirement, she was active in the American Lutheran Church Women in Tucson, Arizona and in Lutheran Social Ministry. She was also very active in the Norseman's Federation in Tucson.

Hazel was preceded in death by her sister, Maude, and her brother, Clifford. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Lucille Westby, of Maddock, ND.

Evelyn M. Knutson, 95
Died: Friday, July 1, 2005, in St. Mary's Regional Health Center, Detroit Lakes, MN.
Evelyn M. Knutson was born August 13, 1909 near Hawley, Minnesota to Oscar and Hannah (Hanson) Berg. She grew up and attended rural schools near Hawley. Evelyn was married to Obert Knutson on September 28, 1932 at Hawley. Following their marriage they resided in Hawley, then moved to Michigan, then later moved back to Lake Park. She was employed at Carlson's Lefse in Lake Park, Minnesota and Carl's Lefse in Hawley, and later worked at Swifts Turkey Plant in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota until her retirement. Obert died December 27, 1990. She continued to live in Lake Park until 2000 when she moved into St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, Shirley and son-in-law, Carl Johnson, and nine brothers and sisters.

She is survived by one son, Obert (Kitty) Knutson, Jr., Biloxi, MS; one daughter, Marion (Lloyd) Olson, Lake Park, MN; one sister, Grace Olson, Hawley, MN; ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Angi A. Sorenson, 35
Died: Wednesday, May 17, 2006, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Angi A. (Grani) Sorenson, 35, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Angi was born March 24, 1971 at Moorhead, Minnesota to Charles and Doris (Lamon) Grani. She graduated from Hawley High School in 1989, and then attended NDSU for two years. She worked several years for Barb's Babes Daycare in Fargo, North Dakota. Angi married Shane Sorenson on February 26, 1994, in Hawley, Minnesota. For the past ten years she has operated Angi's Daycare in Hawley.

She is survived by her husband, Shane Sorenson, Hawley, MN; one daughter, Alli Sorenson, Hawley, MN; one son, Tucker Sorenson, Hawley, MN; her parents, Charles & Doris Grani, Hawley, MN; one brother, Scott (Lynn) Grani, Hawley, MN; two sisters, Tammy (David) Harris, Hawley, MN, and Sarah (Bradley) Burnside, Hawley, MN.

Elizabeth Anne (Valan) Hoover, 47
Died: Monday, July 04, 2005, in Otter Tail County.
Elizabeth Anne (Valan) Hoover was born in Moorhead, Minnesota on New Years Eve in 1957. She danced through her early life with a flair that is still talked about today. After graduating from Moorhead High School in 1976, her love of horses led her to the University of Minnesota Crookston where she earned her degree in Horse Management. Later, her love and care of people brought her to the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota, where she trained to be an LPN in preparation for a life long career in nursing. Liz was a great mom and along with her former husbands Joe and Tom she raised and loved three wonderful children: Sepp Haukebo, Savannah Hoover and Chancelor Hoover. Liz brought her zest for life to the communities of Angel Fire, New Mexico; Pampa, Texas; and most recently, Fargo-Moorhead where she was employed as a nurse with MeritCare.

Liz's life on this earth ended on the Fourth of July after she had spent a wonderful day at the farm and the lakes with her beloved children, friends and family. Along with her children, Liz is survived by her parents Merlyn and Shirlee Valan of rural Moorhead; one brother, Matthew (Kathy) Valan, Moorhead; two sisters, Kathleen (Tom) Muench, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Cordee (Steve) Tungseth, Bangor, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews. Liz's family, along with her many friends will miss her unconditional love and her adventurous spirit dearly. May she rest in the care of our Lord.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Hoff Lutheran Scholarship Fund.

Pearl Pliska, 86
Died: Thursday, April 06, 2006, in Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, MN.
Pearl Pliska was born March 8, 1920 in Hallock, Minnesota. Pearl was raised on a farm and very active in the Catholic Church. She truly enjoyed her garden and flowers and her work in the community.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank.

Pearl is survived by two daughters Mary Jones (Ray), Covington, WA and Betty Zima, Kent WA: two sons, Tom Pliska (Donna) Minneapolis, MN and Mark Pliska (Belinda) Ronald, WA; Surviving brothers & sisters; Alvina Polejewski, Minneapolis, MN, Fremond Polejewski (Rita), Winnipeg, Canada, Leonard Polejewski, Port Charlotte, FL, Violet Anderson, Hawley, MN, Mary Hanson (Clarence), Forest Lake, MN, Joann Bisek, (John), Houston, TX, Helen Polejewski, St. Paul, MN., She had twelve grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Marvin S. Ness, 85
Died: Saturday, January 14, 2006, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.
Marvin Ness, 85, Wolverton, MN, died on Saturday, January 14, 2006, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.

Marvin Selmer Ness was born on May 10, 1920, in Fargo, ND, to Selmer and Myrtle (Swenson) Ness. He grew up and attended school in Wolverton, MN, graduating from Wolverton High School. He farmed with his dad near Wolverton. He was a motorcycle mechanic, working at the Harley Davidson shop in Fargo in the late 1940's and the 1950's. After retiring from farming, Marvin went to work at Dayton Warehouse in Fargo. He worked there for about twenty years, retiring in 1985.

Marvin will be remembered for his service as a Minnesota Firearms Safety Instructor for 42 years. He helped establish an Explorer youth group in Wolverton.

He is survived by two sisters, Marion Allen, Wolverton, MN and Ione Moir, Vancouver, WA; a sister-in-law Doris (Stan) Dibley; sixteen nieces and nephews; forty-two great nieces and nephews.

Rhonda J. Sura, 41
Died: Sunday, July 17, 2005, in Moorhead, MN.
In Loving Memory Of Rhonda Hoffman-Sura. She was a loving and giving mother, sister, friend, daughter and godmother.

She will be surely missed by all, as she touched so many lives.

She is survived by her three children, little Glenn, 22, Nathan Sura 16 and Rebecca Sura, 15; her mother, Carol Schwankl and stepfather Lowell Schwankl, Colorado Springs, Co; sister, Bethany Griffon, Colorado Springs, Co; brother, Patrick Hoffman, Elk Grove, CA.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wayne Lee Hoffman and twin brother Rodney Hoffman.

Cynthia E. Anderson, 88
Died: Tuesday, August 23, 2005, in Viking Manor, Ulen, MN.
Cynthia E. Anderson, 88, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at the Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen, Minnesota.

Cynthia Eleanor Blakeway was born December 26, 1916 at her parent's home in Clay County, Minnesota to Joseph and Eleanor (Perkins) Blakeway. She married Ingvald H. Anderson on November 11, 1939 at Moorhead, Minnesota. Following their marriage they farmed near Hawley until 1970. In 1970 they moved to Hitterdal, Minnesota where they lived until 1976, when they moved back to the farm. Ingvald died April 7, 1984. Cynthia resided in Hawley for several years, and in June 2005 moved to the Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen, Minnesota. Cynthia was active and had been President of the Senior Citizens Center in Hawley. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years and also worked as a custodian.

She is survived by one son, Gerome (JoAnn) Anderson, Hawley, MN; two daughters, Linda (Leland) Aanenson, Twin Valley, MN, and Nancy (Roger) Spillum, Hawley, MN; three brothers, William Blakeway, St. Paul, MN., Elmer (Alfreda) Blakeway, Hawley, MN, and Virgil (Doris) Blakeway, Hawley, MN; three sisters, Hyacinth (Dick) Kronbeck, Moorhead, MN, Charlotte (Grant) Haug, Moorhead, MN, and Genevieve Villiard, Moorhead, MN; seven grandchildren, LeAnne (Ben) Pollock, Julie (Mark) Tellefson, Daryl (Mary) Spillum, Jill (Chad) Dibley, Christina (Derek) Lien, Jason Anderson, April (Travis) Desing; eight great grandchildren, Tessa Pollock, Tara Pollock, Alan & Colton Tellefson, Alissa & Hunter Dibley, Olivia Desing & David Spillum.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister, Elizabeth Blakeway.
