Mary I. Mikkelsen, 56, of Hawley, Minnesota, died December 2, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Mary Irene Buck was born June 12, 1948, at Hitterdal, Minnesota, to Lorenzo and Esther (Nasset) Buck. She grew up in Hitterdal and graduated in 1966 from Hitterdal High School. Mary was married to Michael Mikkelsen on June 24, 1967 at Hitterdal, MN. Mary worked the last few years for the Lake Park-Audubon Elementary School. Mary enjoyed spending time sewing, baking, crafting and reading. But, her most precious times were spent with her greatest joy, her family. Mary's door was always open and the coffee was always on. Many good times were shared around Mary's kitchen table. Family and friends were Mary's life.

Mary was a member of Eksjo Lutheran Church, and found great gratification in being a leader of the Eksjo Lutheran Church Youth Group.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Mikkelsen, Hawley, MN; two sons, Jason (Mindi) Mikkelsen, Lake Park, MN, and Andrew (Sarah) Mikkelsen, Hawley, MN; two daughters, Emily (Aaron) Lauinger, Fargo, ND, and Melanie (Bruce) Hanson, Lake Park, MN; two brothers, Vincent (Rosalie) Buck, Warroad, MN, and James Buck, Hitterdal, MN; five grandchildren, Kylie and Casey Hanson, and Walker, Gavan and Jaycie Mikkelsen; and many nieces and nephews.

Eleanor D. Johnson, 86
Died: Sunday, October 10, 2004, in Eventide Lutheran Home.
Eleanor D. (Granstrom) Johnson, 86, Moorhead, was welcomed into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Sunday, October 10, 2004. She had been residing at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead, MN.

Eleanor Granstrom was born December 18, 1917, the only child of C. E. and Della Granstrom. Born two miles south of Appam, ND, during a prairie blizzard, she later graduated from high school in Zahl, ND, and then attended Minot State Teachers College, Minot, ND.

Following a courtship that included a number of church picnics, she married the love of her life, Cecil M. Johnson, the morning of Christmas Eve, 1941. The farmer's daughter and the local high school teacher were wed in the small, basement-only Lutheran Free Church in Appam. During their years together in service to the Lord and His church, Eleanor was often Sunday School Superintendent, taught hundreds of children "Jesus Loves Me", led Vacation Bible School, and sang. In her lilting soprano, she sang on the radio, sang in choirs, sang for countless funerals, and sang her treasured gospel hymns in her kitchen. She and her husband, Cecil, would often sing duets. He said he just held the music for her. It wasn't true. For over 50 years, a special interest of Eleanor's was the sponsorship of Korean orphans through World Vision. She served on the Board of the Comstock House and was a C-400 member.

She is survived by her husband, Pastor Cecil Johnson; her children, Kathryn Benson, Moorhead, Pastor Timothy (Susan) Johnson, Anoka, MN, Sita (Norman) Johnson, Richfield, MN; 8 grandchildren, Jonathan (Jessica) Benson, Matthew (Lia) Benson, Peter (Becca) Benson, Micah (Amy Jo) Benson, Andrew (Maren) Johnson, Anna Johnson, Rebecca (Rick) Blood and Marjorie Johnson and 7 great grandchildren, Annika, Kai, Ava, Gabriel, Luke, Rachel and Aaron.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to: The Cecil and Eleanor Johnson Scholarship at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN or Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN.

Anna Florence Stenerson, 89
Died: Saturday, April 16, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Anna Florence Stenerson was born to Nels and Anna Tall on March 24, 1916, in Hawley, MN. In 1926, they moved to Moorhead, and Florence graduated from Moorhead High School in 1934. She attended American School of Banking, and for 17 years, she worked at 1st National Bank in Moorhead.

Florence married Leland Stenerson on May 31, 1953, at Bethesda Lutheran Church. They moved to Detroit Lakes, MN, in 1959, where Leland worked with Gamble-Skogmo. She also worked at Northwestern Bell Co. in Detroit Lakes for a few years.

Florence was a member at 1st Lutheran Church, and was active in Sunday School, women's organizations, and the quilting circle. She was also a volunteer at Emmanuel Nursing Home.

Florence is survived by one sister; Betty Edwards; one niece and one nephew.

Vernon W. Simenson, 80
Died: Monday, January 3, 2005, in Innovis Health Systems, Fargo, ND.
Vernon W. Simenson, 80, of Moorhead, MN died Monday, January 3, 2005, at Innovis Health Systems, Fargo, ND.

Vernon was born April 20, 1924 to Sigurd and Ida (Leverson) Simenson in Hawley, MN. He grew up and attended school in Hawley, MN. Vernon served as a medic in the Army during World War II. He and Aggie Goranson were married in 1948. He worked as a salesman for Gamble-Robinson for 38 years until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement he worked for Syncor for nine years.

Vernon loved spending summers at the family cabin at Little Toad Lake, playing cards with friends, spending time at the casino, deer hunting with GG and the Hilgers boys and the Little Toad Lake Golf Open.

He is survived by two daughters, Connie Crimi, Jordan, MN, Trudy (Darrell) Anderson, Billings, MT; a special friend, Kathy Theis, Fargo, ND; one brother, Trygve 'Bud" (Doris) Simenson, Hawley, MN; and seven grand children, Kyle, Erin, Kelly, Ivy, Kassie, Kayli, and Ian; special sister in-law and brother in-law, Lillie and Wally Hilgers; and numerous in-laws and nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Aggie.

Julia K. Olson, 100
Died: Wednesday, January 19, 2005, in Moorhead Health Care Center, Moorhead, MN.
Julia K. Olson, 100, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at MHCC, Moorhead, MN.

Julia Klokseth was born February 16, 1904 near Glyndon, MN where she grew up and attended school. On November 28, 1923 she married Lawrence W. Olson in Moorhead and they farmed until 1966. He died in 1977. She was active in her church, 4-H, was a school board member and was Moland TWP accessor for a number of years. She moved to Moorhead in 1978 and to MHCC October 2002.

She is survived by a son, Leroy (Donna) Olson, Tyler, TX; a daughter Marilyn (Lance) Nelson, Comstock, MN a daughter in law Irene Olson, Fargo, ND; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her husband and one son Aulden Olson.

Mildred C. Brokate, 94
Died: Monday, October 4, 2004, in Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, MN.
Mildred Charlotte Brokate, devoted Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and friend died peacefully at Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, MN, on Monday, October 4, 2004, at the age of 94.

She was born February 24, 1910 in Kensett, Iowa. She was the oldest of two daughters born to Louise and Charles Luckason. They moved to Hawley, MN in 1915. She attended rural school District 93 and graduated from Hawley High School in 1929. She attended Moorhead State Teachers College for nine months and then taught in her home school for three years. She married William Brokate in 1933. Together, they farmed in Cromwell Township until retiring in 1960 when their son, Duane took over the farming operation. They wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 20 years until William's death in 1983. She lived in the Viking Apartments in Hawley until 1997 when she moved into the Hawley Manor. She has lived at Sunnyside Care Center for three years.

Mildred loved people and activity. She was a devoted member of Lysne Lutheran Church, especially active in circle and as a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of Homemakers Club and a 4-H leader. She was President of Hawley PTA and substitute taught for the Hawley School.

Mildred's home was always open to friends and family. She had a wonderful sense of humor that was evident until her death. Mildred was a gifted poet and writer and enjoyed keeping journals. She also enjoyed oil painting, starting painting in her later years.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Those who shared her life were son, Duane (Faye) of Hawley, MN; daughter Diane (Dennis) Wamre of Lakeville, MN; grandchildren, Rodney Weets of Evansville, MN, Ronda (Rick) Thorne of Melbourne, FL, Denise (Dennis) Vonasek of Lakeville, MN, Brenda (Mark) Wagner of Grand Rapids, MN, David (Heidi) Wamre of Delano, MN, Beth (Nathan) Germolus of Hawley, MN, Becky (Chad) Richards of Keller, TX, Daniel (Carmen) Wamre of Lakeville, MN, and Bruce (Heidi) Brokate of Duluth, MN; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William, daughter, Geraldine Weets, Grandson Brent Brokate, and sister, Marium Murphy.

Edna C. Johnson, 86
Died: March 17, 2004, in Ulen, MN
Edna C. Johnson was born April 20, 1917, in Cromwell Township, near Hawley, Minnesota, to Alfred O. and Selma ( Anderson ) Anderson. She grew up and attended rural country school in District #107. She married Helmer Johnson on October 23, 1940 at Lake Park, Minnesota. Following their marriage they farmed at Highland Grove Township, retiring in 1970. Helmer died June 7, 1985. Edna continued to live on the farm until moving to the Viking Manor Nursing Home in December of 2003. She was a lifetime member of Highland Grove Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. She also was a Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, and was in the church choir, circle and the Ladies Aide. She was a 4-H leader and was on the School Board at District #107 for many years.

Edna died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at the Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen, Minnesota, at the age of 86.

She is survived by one son, Arland (Helly) Johnson, Hawley, MN; one daughter, Marilyn Johnson, Hawley, MN; one brother, Aldwin (Ellen) Anderson, Hitterdal, MN; twosisters, Margaret Mischke, Ulen, MN, and Esther (Edward) Luthi, Hawley, MN; two grandchildren, Scott (Heidi) Johnson, Albertville, MN, and Jeremy Johnson, West Point, NY; one great-granddaughter, Paige Ayn Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Amelia A. Jahr, 90
Died: March 17, 2004, in Eventide Lutheran Home
Amelia A. Jahr, 90, Moorhead, MN. died Wednesday, March 17, 2004 in Eventide Lutheran Home.

Amelia was born February 18, 1914 to Mathias and Karen Lyngby, in Hannaford, ND where she grew up and attended school.

Amelia was married on February 18, 1935 to Orval E. Jahr in Moorhead, MN.

Amelia spent her life raising her three daughters and helping care for her grandchildren. She also did daycare in her home for many years.

Her main enjoyment was spending time with her family and getting together with friends for a good game of cards and socializing.

Amelia will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Orval E. Jahr, and her brother Ingvald Lyngby.

She is survived by three daughters; Darlene (Dave) Stretz, Twin Peaks, CA, Kathy Folden, Moorhead, MN, and Cheryl (Bruce) Jaster, Fargo, ND; one sister, Myrtle Corneliuson, Grand Forks, ND; two brothers, Carl (Bess) Lyngby, Grand Forks, ND, Reynard (Marlyn) Lyngby, Mesa, AZ; one sister in law, Bea Lyngby, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
