Walter G. Wesley
Died: Wednesday, January 26, 2005, in his home under the care of hospice of the Red River Valley.
Walter G. Wesley was born on October 12, 1938, in Fort Worth, TX, to Walter and Thelma (Oliver) Wesley. He grew up and attended school in Fort Worth, graduating from Arlington Heights High School in 1957. He attended Texas Christian University in Forth Worth, graduating in 1961 with a B.S. in physics. He obtained his P.H.D. in physics in 1970 at the University of North Carolina. In 1966 he started his teaching career at Moorhead State University, in Moorhead, MN, teaching physics and astronomy. While at Moorhead State, he was instrumental in getting the planetarium established and served as its director for many years. He also served as chair of his department for many years and also on many committees at MSU. He worked in the Sharing Science program in the 1990's. Walter married Beverly Guthmiller on April 12, 1968, at Webster, SD.

He was diagnosed in October of 1998 with early onset Alzheimer's disease and he confronted the disease with complete dignity throughout it's progression.

Walter is survived by his wife, Bev, Moorhead, MN; Children, Leanne (Don) Radlauer of Alfe Menashe, Israel, and their daughters Molly, Cecelia and Gabby; Deb (Tim) Wankel, of Champlin, MN, and their daughter Nicole; Randy (Pam) Vadnais, Fargo, ND, and their sons Jordan and Sean; and also granddaughters Eden and Raven Broberg, Fargo, ND; and Walter's faithful friend, Zeus.

Walter's family would like to offer their sincere thanks and gratitude to Jill, Julie, Liz and the volunteers at the Adult Day Program at Villa Maria Nursing Home and also to their friends and family who have been steadfastly supportive.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Adult Day Program at Villa Maria or the American Alzheimer's Association.

Harry E. Hanson, 81
Died: Saturday, June 11, 2004, in his home.
Harry E. Hansen, 87, of Hawley, died on June 11, 2004 in his home. Harry was born March 30, 1917, in Hawley, Minnesota, to Soren and Annie (Michelson) Hansen. He grew up and attended school in rural Hawley. Following his schooling Harry began working for several farmers in the Hawley area. On September 18, 1941 he was married to Evelyn Keeping at her parent's home. Harry entered the army in September of 1942, and served as an engineer in the Aleutian Islands. After being discharged from the army in 1945, he resumed farming until his retirement. Even after his retirement Harry remained active in farming.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn; four sons, Ronald (Darlene) Hansen, Moose Lake, MN, Robert (Sharon) Hansen, Park Rapids, MN, Duane (Carol) Hansen, Hawley, MN, Alan Hansen, Hawley, MN; two daughters, Beverly (Timothy) Bernhardson, Stockton, CA, Carol (Brent) Blatchford, Fargo, ND; seventeen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one brother, Floyd (Irene) Hansen, Moorhead, MN; three sisters, Mae Weaver, Hawley, MN, Inger Robertson, Hawley, MN, Betty (Elmer) Marweg, Perham, MN; one sister in law, Aagot Hansen, Hawley, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, August Soren; one brother, Charlie Hansen; one sister, Carrie Johnson.

He always had a joke ready, which he shared with many. He was a great husband, father, friend, and neighbor who was enjoyed by many.

Clayton S. Angell, 84
Died: Saturday, August 21, 2004, in MeritCare Hospital.
Clayton S. Angell, 84, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Saturday, August 21, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Clayton was born on April 7, 1920 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, to Carl and Eva (Foss) Angell. He attended school in Thief River Falls until 6th grade when his family moved to Lancaster, Minnesota. He graduated from Lancaster in 1938. After high school, Clayton attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where he received a degree in biology and phy-ed. During his senior year, he was drafted and served in the Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He served in the Asiatic Pacific and the European Theatre of operation and also saw combat in Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. After his discharge, Clayton lived in Oregon for one year and then moved back to Thief River Falls where he operated the Texaco Service Station. In 1954, he accepted a teaching position in Lancaster where he taught science and coached all the sports. On August 6, 1962 Clayton married Olive (Hoglin) Dexter. They moved to Thief River Falls in 1962 and took over the same service station for two years. In 1964, they moved to Hawley, where he taught science and biology at Hawley High School until retiring in 1985. Clayton was an active member of Hawley Lutheran Church, which he served on the church council, a member of the American Legion, where he served as commander for many years, the VFW, the Lions and the Hawley Golf Club, where he served on the Board of Directors.

Clayton was preceded in death by his wife, Olive, who died in 1995, his parents, three sisters, one brother and a step-son, Roger Dexter.

He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda (Todd) Rasmussen, Hawley, MN; two step-sons, Lee Dexter, Fargo, ND, and Dennis Dexter, Hawley, MN; three grandchildren, Rachel, Olivia and Clay Rasmussen, all of Hawley.

Louise (Mary) Metcalf, 94
Died: Wednesday, December 1, 2004, in Eventide Lutheran Home.
Louise Metcalf, 94, Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN, died on Wednesday, December 01, 2004, in the nursing home.

Mary Louise Metcalf was born on June 1, 1910, near Kragnes, MN, to Charles and Edith "Annie" (Boulton) Gilbery. She grew up and attended Oak Mound school near Kragnes. Louise married Banker Metcalf on October 23, 1929, in Moorhead, MN, and they made their home in Glyndon where they farmed and operated school buses. Louise was active in her church, Glyndon Congregational Church, Glyndon Lionesses, and was an avid gardener and member of the Town and Country Garden Club. Banker died on November 9, 1968. Louise moved to Moorhead in 1981.

Louise is survived by four sons, James, Barnesville, MN, Lewis (Barbara), Fargo, ND, Ronald (Judy), Fargo, and Roger (Kathryn), Glyndon, MN; one daughter, Margaret, Lake Park, MN; one brother, Lawrence (Belle) Gilbery, Moorhead, MN; one sister, Connie (John) Kopp, Moorhead, MN; seventeen grandchildren and twenty seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Fred, and two sisters, Doris Skolness and Evelyn Langlie.

John A. "Manny" McCann, 89
Died: Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in Rosewood on Broadway nursing home.
John A. "Manny" McCann, 89, 413 Caddy Avenue, Moorhead, MN, died on May 11, 2004, in Rosewood on Broadway nursing home.

John August McCann, known to friends and family as Manny, was born on May 16, 1915, in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada to Pearl and John McCann. He moved to Moorhead in 1920, and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1933. He farmed with his brother, James, until his retirement in 1975. He married Wilmuth Smith, from Greenville, MS, on July 27, 1978. They were married for 22 years until her death on August 6, 2000. John was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Moorhead since 1923 and a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club. He is preceded in death by his wife, Wilmuth; brother, James; and sister, Maybelle. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Mary Dosland and Evelyn McCann; nephew, Lynn McKinnie; and nieces, Carol Buck and Susan Butler.

Edward J. Olson, 66
Died: Friday, September 3, 2004, in Moorhead Health Care Center.
Edward J. Olson, 66, of Moorhead, MN, died Friday, September 3, 2004, at Moorhead Health Care Center, Moorhead, MN.

Edward was born June 23, 1938, to Edward and Gladys (Putney) Olson in Roosevelt, MN. Edward grew up and attended school in Moorhead, MN. He was a long time employee of the Boeing Corporation in Washington State before moving back to Moorhead in 1990.

Edward is survived by one son; Edward Olson Jr., Republic, WA, four daughters; Kimberly (John) Richardson, Kent, WA, Lori (Bob) Gollnick, Sumner, WA, Randi (Eric) Betzina, Bonney Lake, WA, Holly (Tom) Oltman, Federal Way, WA, two sisters; Waneta Truesdell, Felton, MN, Isabell Remore, Moorhead, MN, and eight grandchildren.

Edward is preceded in death by his parents and four sisters; Leota Snyder, Mable South, Mildred Johnson, and Charlotte Olson.

Pamela J. Johnson, 43
Died: April 11, 2004, in her home.
Pamela Jean Johnson, 43, of Lake Park, Minnesota, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, under hospice care, at her home, near Lake Park, Minnesota.

Pamela Jean Blossom was born November 22, 1960 at Riverside, California. She grew up in Oregon where she graduated from high school. She moved to Alaska where she was employed and later married , then moving back to the Lake Park area where she was employed at Walmart in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Pam was married to Steve Johnson in Nemo, South Dakota on August 9, 2003. They resided in rural Lake Park.

She was preceded in death by her father, and her grandparents.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Johnson, Lake Park, MN; two sons, Cody Larson, Lake Park, MN, and Dylan Larson, Lake Park, MN; her mother, Lori Stafford, Aloha, OR; four sisters, Joleen (Vern) Reeves, Sherwood, OR, Gayle Campani, Foster City, CA, Nancy (J.) Harris, Portland, OR, Brenda (Shawn) Dye, Albany, OR; six nieces & four nephews.

Billy Wright, 50
Died: March 26, 2004, in his home.
Billy L. Wright, 50, 735 Center Avenue West, Dilworth, MN, died on Friday, March 26, 2004, in his home of natural causes.

Billy was born on December 15, 1953, in Santa Ana, CA, where he grew up and attended school. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam War. He worked in the amusement park business for many years and also was in the car detail business. He will be missed by his family and his so very many friends.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara Sanchez, Santa Ana, CA; his father, Marvin Wright, Prospect, OR; three brothers, Danny Wells, Moorhead, MN, Randy Wells, Perris, CA, and Robert Wright, Prospect, OR; one sister, Shelly Rivers, Perris, CA; his daughter, Charity Edwards, Locust Grove, Georgia; two grandchildren, Jeremiah and Abigail Edwards; and his very special friend of twenty-five years, Diane Sloan, Moorhead.

Leman W. Smith, 89
Died: Friday, October 8, 2004, in Rosewood on Broadway.
Leman William Smith, 89, died Friday, October 8, 2004 at Rosewood on Broadway.

Leman was born September 29, 1915 in Ayr, ND where he graduated from high school and Interstate Business College. He worked for Jordan Millwork (formerly Dakota Sash and Door). Leman served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married Elvina Louise Evavold on July 18, 1942.

Leman is survived by his wife of 62 years; daughter, Patricia (Vernon) Pederson, Moorhead, MN; and granddaughter, Laura Pederson, Plymouth, MN; three sisters, Delilah McLean, Lancaster, CA, Mary Nesemeier, Bismarck, ND, and LaVern Leahy, Fargo, ND.

Leman was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Charlotte Seaton, Ilein Schreiber, and brothers, Basil, LaRoy "Bud" and Lloyd Smith.

Leman, a loving husband, father and grandfather, will be greatly missed.
