Madge D. Larson, 77
Died: Wednesday, October 6, 2004, in her home under the care of Hospice.
Madge D. (Thies) Larson, 77, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Wolverton, MN, passed away at her home, Wednesday, October 6, 2004 under the gentle care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Madge was born to Andrew and Mary (Poehls) Thies at Ada, MN on May 29, 1927. She moved with her family to Sabin in 1932, where she grew up, attended grade school and later graduated from Moorhead High School in 1945.

Madge was employed by the VA hospital in Fargo from 1945 to 1949 when she married Otis Larson of Wolverton, MN on September 17, 1949. They resided on the Larson family farm until June 2004 when they moved to Moorhead.

Remembered as a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Madge liked to visit and really enjoyed people, developing many long-lasting friendships. Madge loved her family and looked forward to spending time with them whenever possible.

Madge was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Wolverton and its Faith Lutheran Women.

Pulmonary Fibrosis, a disease with unknown cause or cure was the main cause of Madge's death. She was diagnosed in 1995 and the past year experienced acceleration of the disease.

Survivors include her husband Otis and three daughters and their families: Mona (Rick) Hansen, Fargo; Mary (Tom) Arth, West Plains, MO; Linda (Kent) Larson Adams, Brooklyn, NY. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Angela (Jason) Weisenburger, Fargo; Jesse Lokken, Minneapolis; Andy and Jim Arth, West Plains, MO; Frank Larson-Adams, Brooklyn, NY and three step-grandchildren, Derrick Hansen, Minneapolis; Kristin (Leo) Budija, Minneapolis; Janna Hansen, Jamestown.

Other survivors include: Curtiss (Marge) Hovey, Fairfield Glade, TN; Roberta Thies, Phoenix, AZ; Cliff and Thelma Johnson, Minneapolis and several nieces and nephews and their families.

Madge was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Grace Hovey and brother Jerry Thies.

The family suggests donations to Hospice of the Red River Valley or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation at www.pulmonary fibrosis.org.

Ila L. Reierson, 88
Died: Monday, March 28, 2005, in Eventide Lutheran Home.
Ila L. Reierson, 88, of Moorhead, died Monday, March 22, 2005, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.

Ila Lokken Reierson was born July 27, 1916, to Iver and Verna Lokken at Newfolden, MN. Her father died when she was four years old and her brother Lynn, was two years old. They spent the next few years with relatives while their mother worked. Later Verna married Raymond Baker of Strandquist, MN. The family moved to a farm in Norman County and later to Sabin, MN.

Ila attended elementary schools in Minnesota, graduating from high school at Halstad, and later from Moorhead State Teachers college. She began teaching in the rural schools of Hawley, Dent and Moorhead, then in Oregon for 3 years.

On June 26, 1943 she married John Reierson, of Hawley, MN. He died in 1959, while they lived in Anoka, MN. Following his death, she accepted an overseas teaching position with the U.S. Army in Germany.

Back in Moorhead, she continued teaching at Riverside and Probstfield elementary schools, and obtained a Master's Degree from Moorhead State University in 1968. She made her home with Betty DeKrey, retiring in 1978.

She is survived by two brothers, Lynn (Lois) Lokken and Duane (Beverly) Baker, both of Sabin, MN and eight nieces and nephews; David Lokken, Palm Desert, CA, Gregory Lokken and Georgia Nauman, both of Minneapolis, MN, Sharon Holbrook, Fairbanks, AK, Laurie Sakkinen, North Pole, AK, Daniel Baker, Glyndon, MN, James Baker, Sabin, MN, and Kurtis Baker, Moorhead, MN. Also eleven great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Elmwood cemetery Association or Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN.

Beverly J. Paulson, 68
Died: Wednesday, April 13, 2005, in Bethany Homes, Fargo, ND.
Beverly J. Paulson, 68, Fargo, ND, died on Wednesday, April 13, 2005, in Bethany Homes, Fargo, ND.

Beverly J. Solien was born on June 21, 1936, in Moorhead, MN, where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Moorhead High School. Beverly married Charles A. Paulson on August 4, 1953, and they made their home in Moorhead. She worked for Fargo's channel 11 television for thirty nine years. In her years there, she co-hosted the noon show "Dialing for Dollars" and the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. Her husband, Chuck, died on May 21, 1996.

Beverly is survived by her daughter, Debra (Randy) Buth, Fargo, ND; two sons, David (Lois) Paulson, Moorhead, MN, and Gary (Kathleen) Paulson, Moorhead; brother, Wally (Gwen) Solien, Moorhead; six grandchildren, Alicia and Jenna Buth, Erik and Kirsten Paulson and Nicholas and Daniel Paulson. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Inga A. Iverson, 93
Died: Sunday, September 19, 2004, in Eventide Lutheran Home.
Inga was born on July 18, 1911 in Audubon, MN to Andrew and Ingaborg Bortnem. She grew up and attended school in Audubon. Following her schooling she was employed at the Audubon Post Office.

Inga was married to Milton Iverson on June 15, 1947 in Audubon, MN. They then moved to the Bortnem family farm north of Audubon where they farmed until their retirement.

Inga is survived by one son; Allan (Kathy) Iverson, Maple Grove, MN; two daughters, Rachel (Michael Weidner) Iverson, Beldenville, WI, Becky Iverson, Colfax, WI; a special niece Janis (Harley) Softing, Moorhead, MN; four grandchildren, Alysia Iverson, Nate and Kristen Weidner, and Ryan Blumenauer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Milton, and two brothers Oscar and Sigvart Bortnem.

Dean L. Smith, 67
Died: Sunday, January 23, 2005, in Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, MN.
Dean L. Smith was born on May 27, 1937 at Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, to Garner and Isabelle (Severson) Smith. Dean spent his childhood to young adult years at Cormorant Village, where he attended country school for eight years and then to Pelican Rapids High School, graduating in 1955. Following his graduation he moved to Florida where he worked at a delivery service for a year, then moved back and worked at home construction in Fargo-Moorhead and the Cormorant area for most of his life. He joined the Air National Guard in 1959, and was a member for six years.

Dean was married to Cleo Olsen on February 11, 1961 at Hawley Lutheran Church. They lived in Hawley and Moorhead, and later moved to Dean's great grandparent's farm on Upper Cormorant Lake. Dean and Cleo lived there for thirty-five years. Dean enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing small construction jobs on the homes of his children.

Dean has resided at Sunnyside Care Center at Lake Park, Minnesota since July of 2003.

Dean is survived by his wife, Cleo Smith, Lake Park, MN; two daughters, Tammy Johannsen, Glendale, AZ, and Cheryl (Tom) Herfindahl, Lake Park, MN; two sons, Michael Smith, Lake Park, MN, and Timothy (Betsy) Smith, Lake Park, MN; two sisters, Joan Smith, Phoenix, AZ, and Audrey (Dennis) Solga, New Hope, MN; one brother, Glen (LeeAnn) Smith, Pelican Rapids, MN; ten grandchildren, Misty (Mike) Ostazeuski, Nick Johannsen, McKenzie (Dean) Skogen, Tricia Johannsen, Mike Smith, Alexa, Marcus & Blair Herfindahl, Carson & Kamron Smith; and eight nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents Garner and Isabelle (Severson) Smith.

Curtis O. Larson, 86
Died: Tuesday, April 05, 2005, in Moorhead Health Care Center, Moorhead, MN.
Curtis O. Larson, 86, Moorhead, MN, died on April 5, 2005, under hospice care surrounded by family and special friends, in Moorhead Health Care Center.

Curtis was born on April 24, 1918, in Benson, MN, where he grew up and attended school, graduating from high school there. He married Amber Hilleren in 1939 in Benson, MN. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII from 1945 until 1946, serving in Japan. When he was discharged, he moved to Alexandria, MN, where he worked in advertising at the Park Region Echo Newspaper for 18 years. He married Adeline E. "Pat" Wirtzfeld on March 16, 1959, and they moved to Fargo-Moorhead area, where he worked for the Minnesota Conservation Federation Newspaper. In 1977, they moved to Vista, California, where he worked in maintenance for two churches. They retired and moved back to Moorhead in 1984 to be closer to family. In retirement, he did sign painting for local businesses. Pat died on February 20, 2001.

Curtis is survived by five sons, Frank Larson, Wahpeton, ND, John Larson, Fargo, ND, David (Esther) Larson, Salem, OR, Kurt (Yvonne) Larson, Champlin, MN, and Tom Betlock; six daughters, Susan (Rick) Ludwig, West Fargo, ND, Mary Jo (Kenneth) Abel, Fargo, ND, Jeanne (Charles) Erickson, Moorhead, MN, Carole Velde, Kansas City, MO, Janet (Jack) Antil, Stacy, MN, Karen Ubich, Mohave, AZ; one sister, Violet Jacobson, Benson, MN; twenty-five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and the family dog, Cracker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, his parents, three brothers, LuWayne, Cliff and Julius, and two sisters, Myrtle Lindahl and Hazel Schmidt.

Carl Kooren Jr., 71
Died: Tuesday, June 29, 2004, in his home.
Carl was the son of Carl Kooren, Sr. and Elizabeth Metz Kooren. He was born in South Heart, North Dakota in 1932. He lived and went to school in South Heart until he joined the Army where he spent the majority of those 12 years in France. He retired from the Army as a Staff Sergeant at which time he made his home in Barbezieux, France. He ran a trucking firm there for many years. He returned to the United States in October 2002, settling in Hawley, MN. where he resided at the Northside Terrace. Carl enjoyed working in his garden, playing pinochle and other games and laughing, joking, and teasing. He was also quick to help others when it was needed. Carl is survived by his daughter, Nadine, Fargo, ND; grandsons, Emmanuel and Mickael; a sister, Irene Desmond, Dickinson, ND; brothers, Henry (Ramona), Hawley, MN, Raymond, Missoula, MT. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and his special friend, Lorraine Grefsrud.

Ron Wertman, 45
Died: Thursday, July 14, 2004, in Moorhead, MN.
Ron Wertman, 45, 401 Rensvold Boulevard, Moorhead, MN, died on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, in Moorhead, MN.

Ron was born on March 15, 1959, in Ankara, Turkey. He grew up in various communities as his family traveled with the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from high school in Minot, ND. Ron married Lisa Boehm on July 8, 1983, in Minot, ND. They lived in Tacoma, WA, Gilbert, AZ, and in 1993, moved to Moorhead, MN, where they have lived since. He worked for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, where he spent most of his time as conductor/brakeman and received his engineer's license as well. He also served as union representative for the United Transportation Union. Ron enjoyed fishing, four-wheeling, and motorcycling. He loved watching his kids progress in Tae Kwon Do.

Ron is survived by his wife, Lisa Wertman; three sons, Adam, Luke and Gage; one daughter, Ali; two sisters, Joan (Edwin) Glueck, Gig Harbor, WA, and Wendy (George) Chittenden, Tacoma, WA; his father, Frank Wertman, Bannock City, Utah and his mother, Yolande Wertman, Tacoma, WA.
