Francis Deja, 87
Died: March 26, 2004, in Eventide Lutheran Home.
Frances Ellen Deja, 87, resident of the Evergreens of Moorhead for the past 7 years, and of River Falls, Wisconsin her first 80 years, died of a recent illness on Friday, March 26, 2004, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.

Frances was born to John Henry and Iva Belle Kelly on a farm outside of River Falls, Wisconsin on January 2, 1917. After graduating from high school in 1935, Frances attended River Falls Normal School for a year.
She enjoyed a variety of jobs including cooking alongside her aunt for a college boy's club of 35 members, attending a young physically disabled cousin in Chicago, telephone operator, and seamstress before marrying Lawrence Andrew Deja on October 11, 1952. To this union were born two daughters.

Frances is survived by her daughters, Mary Ellen (Bob) Nelson, Fargo, ND; Patty Ann (Paul) Anderson, McKinney, TX; her brother Vern Kelly, River Falls, WI; and three grandchildren, Paul Nelson, Fargo, ND, and Joel and Emily Anderson, McKinney, TX.

Frances will be remembered for her love of life, her love of gardening and sewing, her hard work and persevering spirit, but most of all her love for her family and friends.

LeRoy B. Krogen, 67
Died: Sunday, December 12, 2004, in Mesa, AZ.
LeRoy B. Krogen, 67, beloved husband and father, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, December 12, 2004 at his Mesa Arizona home.

LeRoy was born October 28, 1937 in Hawley, MN. LeRoy graduated from Moorhead High School and attended Fargo Business School.

In 1958 he married Shirley Henjum from Breckenridge, MN at Breckenridge Lutheran Church. LeRoy and Shirley lived in Bismarck where LeRoy worked for Campbell Soup Company. LeRoy and Shirley settled in Moorhead MN where they lived for over 40 years.

LeRoy served with the North Dakota Air National Guard and was a proud member of the Fargo Lions Club. LeRoy was a charter member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Moorhead. In 1999 he was honored by his peers from Cole Paper of Fargo, ND at his retirement after 40 years of service.

LeRoy and Shirley have been enjoying their summers on Big Cormorant Lake and their winters in Mesa, AZ, where they have spent their retirement years with many friends.

LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents Burton and Lillie Krogen. He is survived by his wife Shirley, and two sons, Steven (Shay) of Walker, MN and Michael (Deb) of Bloomington, MN; brother Keith (Sally) of Moorhead, MN; sister Charlene (Jim) Duncan of Audubon, MN.

Leona M. Frisk, 79
Died: March 09, 2004, in her Home
Leona M. Frisk, 76, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Leona Marion Anderson was born November 13, 1927 at Winnipeg Junction, Minnesota, near Hawley, Minnesota, to Andrew and Hannah (Estrin) Anderson. When she was three years old, her family moved to Hawley where she attended school, graduating in the spring of 1945. She was employed by Silver Lake Oil Company and later, by the State Bank of Hawley. On September 20, 1947, she married Maynard Frisk at the Hawley Alliance Church. They owned and operated Ulven Gravel Company for 43 years and raised one son, Mark.

Leona was a gifted musician and served as pianist/organist of Hawley Alliance Church for more than sixty years. She was a warm and caring person who will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her husband, Maynard, Hawley, MN; one son, Mark (Brenda) Frisk, Hawley, MN; and three grandchildren, Mari, Sarah and Paul Frisk.

Fred J. Meyer, 88
Died: Friday, February 11, 2005, in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, MN.
Fred Meyer, 88, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, formerly of Hawley, died Friday, February 11, 2005, at Emmanuel Nursing Home, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Fred Meyer was born October 9, 1916, in Highland Grove Township, Clay County, Minnesota, to Wilhelm F. and Anna K. (Plantenberg) Meyer. He grew up and attended school in Hitterdal, graduating from Hitterdal High School. Fred married DeVaughn Schloesser on October 22, 1938 at Hitterdal, Minnesota. Following their marriage they farmed in Highland Grove Township, retiring in 1977. They moved to Hawley in 1994. In 2001 they moved to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. DeVaughn died October 29, 2002. In January 2004, Fred moved to Emmanuel Nursing Home where he has since resided.

Fred was a member of Highland Grove Lutheran Church where he had served on the church board for many years, and he also served on the Hitterdal School Board and the Highland Grove Township Board.

He is survived by one daughter, Valerie (Ken Eppes) Meyer, Dallas, TX; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Meyer, Detroit Lakes, MN; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dorothea B. Wright, 85
Died: Wednesday, October 20, 2004, in her home in Moorhead, MN.
Dorothea Wright, 85, 710 5th Avenue South, Moorhead, MN, died on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, in her home.

Dorothea Dosland was born on April 18, 1919, in Moorhead, MN, to Christian and Anna (Lobben) Dosland, in what was then the Dosland home at 420 7th Street South. She grew up and attended school in Moorhead, graduating from Moorhead High School in 1937. She received her B.A. in education from Concordia College, graduating in 1941. She spent the summer of 1941 working for the war effort, making radio tubes at a plant in California. She taught in the Milroy Consolidated school in Milroy, MN, from 1941-1942, where she taught eleventh and twelfth grade English, seventh and eighth grade spelling, typing and library studies, Underwood, MN, from 1942-1943, where she taught typing, business training, bookkeeping, business law and library studies, Hendricks, MN, school from 1944-1946, and the Elk River School from 1946-1949.

Dorothea married Lawrence V. Wright on June 25, 1955, in Moorhead where they made their home before moving to Fargo, ND. Dorothea continued teaching as a substitute teacher while she was raising her family. When Lawrence retired, the couple moved back to Moorhead. Lawrence died on December 8, 1997.

Dorothea was a long time member of Eastern Star. She had a tremendous sense of humor and loved to bake and garden. She raised her children with a strong sense of fairness and equality.

Dorothea is survived by two sons, Loren, Apple Valley, MN, and Marvin (Carole), Moorhead, MN; three grandchildren, Matthew, David and Callan. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother, Goodwin Dosland, and a sister, Corrine Schwafel.

Anna L. Lackman, 85
Died: Tuesday, January 11, 2005, in Innovis Health Systems, Fargo, ND.
Anna Lee Lackman, 85, of Hitterdal, Minnesota, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Anna Lee (Albin) Lackman was born at Clinton, Missouri on February 16, 1919, the daughter of Bruno and Brooksie (Parks) Albin. Her family later moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she graduated from high school in 1936. While attending high school she also worked towards and received a two year college degree in business studies. She married Paul Lackman December 3, 1946 and lived until 1975 on Femco Farm #3 in the rural Wolverton, MN area. She and Paul then moved to rural Hitterdal where she resided until her death. Paul died February 5, 1994. Anna Lee was employed by Kmart in Fargo from June 1964 until her retirement in February of 1985. During her employment at Kmart, she helped open three other stores with help in computer training. Anna Lee loved piano playing, reading and writing poetry and was able to have a couple selections published.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter and her husband.

She is survived by three daughters, Jane Lackman, Hitterdal, MN, Laura (Mark) Iverson, Hitterdal, MN, and Eva (Patrick) O'Connor, Kimberling City, MO; three granddaughters and one grandson; three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Roy E. Swenson, 96
Died: April 12, 2004
Roy E. Swenson was born May 14, 1907 at Eglon Township, Clay County, Minnesota to Adolph and Matilda (Sjoman) Swenson. He grew up there and attended rural country school District #15, near Solem Church. Roy married Muriel Lord on March 13, 1930 at Eksjo Lutheran Church, near Lake Park, Minnesota. He was a dairy farmer in Eglon Township from 1930 until 1956 when they moved into Hawley. He sold real estate and insurance from 1956 until his retirement in 1980. Roy was a life long member of Eksjo Lutheran Church.

Roy died Monday, April 12, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mildred, and a brother, Carl.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel Swenson, Hawley, MN; one son, Duane (Mavis) Swenson, Hawley, MN; one daughter, Diane (Robert) Arnold, Osage, MN; one sister, Margaret Wipf, Minot, ND; seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Harvey L. Haugrud, 77
Died: April 13, 2004, in his home, under hospice care.
Harvey LeRoy Haugrud was born June 20, 1926 in Barnesville, Minnesota to Hans and Lena (Nelson) Haugrud. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Barnesville. He enlisted in the Air Force during World War II and served in Okinawa, Japan. He married June Goeman on May 24, 1950 at Lake Park Lutheran Church. Harvey worked as a carpenter for many years. He also worked as a substitute mail carrier in Lake Park for 30 years. His last ten years in the postal service was as a full time rural carrier in Twin Valley, Minnesota.

Restoring antique and classic cars was a major source of enjoyment for Harvey, as he spent many "midnight" hours working. Harvey was instrumental in organizing the Midnite Riders Snowmobile Club and enjoyed riding with his family and friends. Harvey was a member of the Lake Park Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post #181.

Harvey died Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at his home at the age of 77. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and seven brothers.

He is survived by his wife, June Haugrud, Lake Park, MN; two daughters, Pamela (John) Midthune, Moorhead, MN, and their children, Nick (Amanda) Midthune, Crystal, MN, and Brea Midthune, San Diego, CA; Paulette (Lawrence) Dorval and their children Megan and Maren, all of Belfield, ND; the newest member of his family is his great grandson, Jackson Midthune; he is also survived by one brother, Charles Haugrud, Cleburne, TX.
