Stan and Patricia Ries married on February 4, 1967 and Stan moved "across the river" to Shakopee. Years later he developed land and built his long-time home in Louisville Township. After a brief stint at Mankato State University and in the active Army Reserves, he worked on the Ford assembly line in St. Paul, graduated from the University of Minnesota, and was a pioneer in the mobile/cell phone industry. Later, he and business partner Dale Dahlke helped Shakopee grow to the south and west. More recently, he traded options, working closely with Dale. Patty died in 2000 and Stan and Margaret Nelson married at the Marystown Church in 2007. He struggled with COPD for many years and was inspiring in his determination to live. Schuck, Edward Arthur
July 30, 1940 - April 2, 2016
Age 75 of Wayzata and Santa Barbara, CA, passed away April 2, 2016. From his time as Rooter King, 1960-61, at the University of Minnesota, to the week of his death, Ed was a cheerleader to his family, (wife, Judy & daughters, Stephanie and Suzanne) and friends. A successful entrepreneur and co-founder of several small companies, Ed especially loved mentoring young people who wanted to start their own businesses. An eternal optimist, his fundraising mantra was "'No' means 'maybe', and 'maybe' means 'yes'!" Diagnosed in his 50's with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Ed received the precious gift of a lung transplant at age 63 and was one of the longest living lung recipients at the U of M. He always endeavored to "give back" and served as chairman of the Alpha-1 Foundation and leading member of the advisory board for the Center for Lung Science and Health at the University. Ed graduated from Roosevelt High School and the University of Minnesota with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked first at Rosemount Engineering and later at Medtronic until 1977 when he received a Bush Fellowship and earned a Sloan Executive Management Certificate at Stanford University. There he began his love affair with California and he and his family relocated to Santa Barbara for four years after Ed was hired by Browne Corporation. A pioneer in the sleep medicine industry, Ed co-founded EdenTec, which manufactured one of the earliest home monitors for sleep breathing disorders, particularly sleep apnea. Throughout the rest of his career, Ed continued to advocate for more patient-friendly medical devices and up to the time of his death, was an active member of the board of Inspire Medical Systems, another company dedicated to providing better therapies for sleep apnea. Outside work, Ed devoted time to many civic activities, chairing the Eden Prairie Planning Commission for many years and working on political campaigns and other projects for the DFL in Eden Prairie and Wayzata. Ed never met a river he didn't like and fly-fished in most of them. A world traveler with Judy, Ed was also a collector of antique boats in need of restoration, fly fishing rods, duck decoys and fishing flies. (As time went by and garages filled up, Judy was relieved that the items catching Ed's eyes got a little smaller.) Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Evis Schuck and, in addition to Judy, he is survived by his daughters Stephanie (Kurt) Glaser and Suzanne Schuck Miller; grandchildren Hayden and Claire Miller and Eddie and Kasey Glaser; and brother Dave (Mary) Schuck. The celebration of Ed's life on Saturday, April 16 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke Presbyterian Church, 3121 Grove-land School Road, Wayzata, will be preceded by visitation at the church from 9:00 to 10:00. Memorials are preferred to St. Luke, The Center for Lung Science and Health at the University, and the Alpha-1 Foundation. Ed was one of a kind. He will be dearly missed.
