Age 91 of Princeton, died peacefully March 27 at Elim Care Nursing Home in Princeton, Minn., with her two daughters, Barbara and Beverly, plus her granddaughter, Jody, by her side.
Vivian had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer almost a year ago and chose not to have any treatment — to enjoy her quality of life during her remaining days. She was born Dec. 14, 1924, in Rosholt, S.D., to Selma (Enerson) and Henry Nelson. In 1936 the Nelson family moved to Hayfield, Minn., where she met her high school sweetheart Arlie Paulson. They were married April 4, 1943, and lived in Hayfield on the farm to raise their nine children, who all were baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and graduated at Hayfield High School. She was a loving, quiet, creative, caring and stylish mom! Vivian was a stay-at-home mom until 1966, when she became the church secretary at Trinity Lutheran in Hayfield, as well as at Grace Lutheran in Lake Benton, where she resided for 20 years before moving to Princeton for the past four years. Many classmates have fond memories of our parents inviting them out to the farm after basketball and football games to dance and mingle. Our parents were our "dancing stars"! Vivian was an avid Twins fan, a collector of decorative birds and flowers, and a gardener with a green thumb. Vivian is survived by her two sons: Neal and Noel (Penny), Princeton, Minn.; five daughters: Naomi Kline, Jacksonville, Fla., Barbara (Jim) Bolitho, Hayward, Wis., Beverly (Jerry) Krog, Lake Benton, Minn., Debra Dupree, San Diego, Calif., and Denise (Juan) Valles, Chicago; 17 grandchildren: Dana, Pam, Barbara Jean, Jody, Christopher, Danielle, Justin, Michael, Jon, Katie, Korrinn, Erin, Brett, Meghan, Jason, Weston and Mitchel; 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Arlie; two sons: Bradley and Darryl; her parents, Henry and Selma Nelson; three brothers: Wally, Harvey, Truman; and three sisters: Norma, Ardel and Avis. Our beautiful mom will be deeply missed. Cards can be mailed to Beverly (Paulson) Krog, 2029 180th Ave., Lake Benton, MN 56149. Memorials can be made in Vivian's name to Fairview Hospice or Ovarian Cancer Research. A celebration of Vivian's life is planned at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hayfield, Minn., on Sunday, July 24, at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Paul Hauschild officiating. In addition to farming, Alvina also worked outside the home as a waitress and as a seamstress with Artic Cat Industries. The last several years of their time in northwestern Minnesota included summers spent at their lakeside retreat located in Lake Bronson State Park. Alvina loved to feed people and it was impossible to stop by without eating something delicious and being given something to take home with you as well! Her quick wit, excellent memory, unending energy, her love for traveling to family and relatives or having them come to her and her pride in being fashionable along with having her hair and nails done, are “Alvina.” She will be missed very much.
