Mary Barbara Grant, 88

Mary Barbara Grant, 88, Breckenridge, Minn., formerly of Wahpeton, N.D., died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge.

The Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m., Friday, May, 15 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Wahpeton, with the Rev. Dale Lagodinski as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 14 with a 5 p.m. Christian Mothers/Catholic Daughters Rosary, with a 7 p.m. prayer vigil at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton, (920 3rd Ave. N.), and one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

Interment will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Barbara Koetter was born Aug. 15, 1920, at Renville County, N.D., the daughter of Herman and Theresia (Klosterman) Koetter. She grew up on the farm that her father homesteaded. There she learned how to milk cows, shuck wheat and do whatever was needed to survive on the farm in the 1920’s and 1930’s. She moved to Minot, N.D., with her father and sister Veronica in 1943. Mary worked for Gaffney Office Products in Minot while attending Minot Business College. She started as an office equipment delivery driver during WWII and eventually worked her way up to secretary and bookkeeper for Mr. Gaffney. She was united in marriage to Gordon Grant on June 15, 1948, to August of 1996 when Gordon died. During their married life they lived in Klamath Falls, Ore., New Rockford, N.D., and Wahpeton, N.D. At the time of her death she was a resident of St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge.

In addition to being the mother of four, Mary worked outside the home as an emergency room night receptionist at St Francis Hospital. Later she worked at the Richland County Register of Deeds Office. She then worked at the Wahpeton Senior High School as secretary where she retired in 1986.

Mary was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Christian Mothers and did volunteer work at the church. Mary and Gordon enjoyed traveling in the United States and Europe. After Gordon’s death Mary stayed involved in the community as a volunteer receptionist at St. John’s Church, a sample distributor at EconoFoods and as a worker in the political process including working at the polls. She enjoyed attending the local fine arts performances at the school in the area. Her favorite time was time spent with family-catching up on the individual and family happenings or enjoying a card game, particularly cribbage.

Mary is survived by: her two sons and two daughters, Roland (Ginger) Grant, Kent, Wash., Marilee (Ron) Tischer, Breckenridge, Minn., Gregory (Deb Davis) Grant, Fargo, N.D., Kristi (Bruce) Sturdevant, Walkersville, Md.; nine grandchildren, Michael Grant, Los Angeles, Calif., Stephanie (Shawn) Hailey, Los Alamos, N.M., Jesse (Maureen) Tischer, Wheaton, Minn., Lindsey Tischer, Breckenridge, Mayme Grant, Crested Butte, Colo., Rachel Grant, Minnetonka, Minn., Joshua Sturdevant and Gabriel Sturdevant, Walkersville, Md.. Lisa Ehlers, London, England; great-grandchildren, Elliot Grant, Tokyo, Japan, Seth, Alix and Ella Hailey, Los Alamos, Andrew and William Tischer, Wheaton, Isabella and Louie Sexton, Fargo; her three sisters, Dorothea Limke, Carpio, N.D., Cecelia Zeltinger, Minot, and Veronica (Melvin) Moen, Riverton, Wyo.; three sisters-in-law, Donna Olson, Minot, Patricia Grant, Minot, Dorothy (Bud) Korte, Berthold, N.D.; and many special nieces and nephews, and special friends, Corey and Angie Williams, Donovan, Jordan and Tessa, all of Lisbon, N.D.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Herman and Theresia (Klosterman) Koetter; and her husband Gordon; her brother, Cornelius Koetter and an infant brother.

Wenzel Tuhy, 81

Wenzel Tuhy, 81, Breckenridge, Minn., died Monday, April 20, 2009, at St. Francis Healthcare Campus-Home, Breckenridge.

The Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Friday, April 24 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Wahpeton, N.D., with the Rev. Dale Lagodinski as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 23 with a 6 p.m. prayer service at the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton. There will also be visitation one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

Burial will be at Calvary cemetery, Wahpeton.

Wenzel James Tuhy was born Nov. 14, 1927, the son of Frederick and Mary Tuhy at Dickinson, N.D. He grew up and went to school in Dickinson. Wenzel worked for and retired after 40 years from the Burlington Northern Railroad in Dickinson.

He married Emma Bosch on April 22, 1964, and they resided in Dickinson until they moved to Wahpeton in October of 2001. Emma died Aug. 12, 2006.

Wenzel was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He brought laughter to everyone who knew him.

He is survived by: his children, his son, Robert (Dorothy) Wurm, Breckenridge; three daughters, Victoria (Boyd) Abelseth, Prairie City, S.D., Kathleen Polanchek, Bismarck, N.D., Mary (Bryan) Wolfgram, Wahpeton; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his niece, Angie Trieb, Helena, Mont.

Wenzel was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Emma; five brothers, Joseph, Leo, John, Isadore, Adolph; and his two sisters, Victoria and Anna.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Leon D. Tischer, 49

Leon D. Tischer, 49, Lake Elmo, Minn., formerly of Breckenridge, Minn., died Monday, May 18, 2009, at his home in Lake Elmo. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at Grace Lutheran Church in Breckenridge. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 22 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge; also one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Arrangements are with Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge.

Matthew Hedstrom, 28

Matthew Hedstrom, 28, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at his home in Melrose, Minn.

Funeral services for Matt will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 27, at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake, Minn. with the Rev. Bob Toso officiating.

Burial will be in the Union cemetery, Elbow Lake. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home.

Matthew was born on May 3, 1981, in Breckenridge, Minn., to Donald E. and Diane M. (Lohse) Hedstrom. He attended school in Breckenridge where he enjoyed playing music, writing poetry, and skate boarding. After graduation, Matt attended St. Cloud Tech, St.Cloud, Minn., for computer programming and was currently employed by B.I. out of Eden Valley, Minn. He was also the lead singer in the band, “Symptom of Seclusion.”

Matthew is survived by: his father Donald of Moorhead, brother Mark (Tricia) of Big Lake, nephews Cory and Nathan, and several aunts, uncles, cousins and other extended family. He was also preceded in death by his mother Diane, who died in 1999, his brother Matthew Wayne, who died in 1976, and his grandparents Albert and Cora Hedstrom and Kurt and Laura Lohse.

David A. Schillinger, 76

David A. Schillinger, 76, Campbell, Minn. died peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and family on Aug. 9, 2009, at his home in Campbell, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, Breckenridge, Minn., with Father Arlie Sowada officiating.

Burial will be at Fairmount Calvary cemetery, rural Fairmount, N.D.

Visitation will be Saturday, Aug. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge.

David Schillinger, a long time resident of Campbell, was born March 23, 1933 in Richland Township near Fairmount to Joseph and Anna (Nennig) Schillinger. As a child, David grew up on the farm living around the Campbell area. He attended country school for three years before attending Campbell Public School. After school, David worked for area farmers until he went into the US Army in 1956. He served through 1958 and was in the Big Red One, 1st Infantry Division. David also worked at Abel’s gas station in Campbell for several years. In 1965 he started working for the Campbell Public School as a janitor and bus driver, where he worked for ten years. In 1975 he began working for the Wilkin County Highway Department as a blade operator until his retirement in March, 1995. During the more than 40 years of living in Campbell, David was on the fire department for 33 years.

On May 14, 1959, David was united in marriage to Annabelle Korinek. They made their home in Campbell and had three children, Rebecca, Kurt and Debra. Annabelle passed away Dec. 17, 1997.

On April 23, 1999, David married Beverly (Craig) Barton. They made their home in Campbell. With this union, the family was enlarged by three daughters, Cindy, Sarah and Rebecca.

Many wonderful family memories were made at Seclusion Point, near Dent, Minn. and Jungle Shores near Perham, Minn.

David especially loved fishing, and always enjoyed a good search for the illusive “Walter, ” a largemouth bass. David also enjoyed camping, a blazing campfire, and a rousing game of dice with Beverly. David’s “furry kids, ” Willie (Buddy) and Shadow (Squirt) also gave him a lot of pleasure.

Survivors include: his beloved wife, Beverly, of Campbell, Minn.; his son, Kurt (Tammy) Schillinger, Wahpeton, N.D.; his daughter, Debra (John) Wolf, Dayton, Minn.; three step-daughters, Cindy (Todd) Paintner, Fargo, N.D., Sarah Barton, Sherwood, Ariz., and Rebecca (Cory) Jensen, Mankato, Minn.; his grandsons: Matthew and Michael Wolf; his granddaughter, Anna Schillinger; step-grandchildren Gregory and Katelynn Bartlett, Cameron and Carmen Tischer, Masen, Paxten and Victoria Jensen; his sisters, Genevieve Zoucha, Tintah, Minn.; and Bernice (Raymond “Bud”) Barth, Thief River Falls, Minn.; his brothers, Robert “Bob” (Louise) Schillinger; and Lawrence “Charlie” (Verdella) Schillinger both of Campbell; his brother-in-law, John Korinek, Campbell; his sister-in-law, Priscilla Gilles, Paris, Ill.; many nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Anna Schillinger; his first wife, Annabelle Schillinger; his oldest daughter, Rebecca Ann Schillinger.

Donald “Don” E. Schneeweis, 66

Donald “Don” E. Schneeweis, 66, of Moorhead, Minn., died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, in MeritCare’s Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND.

The funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. in the Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead, Minn.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13 at Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, Minn. with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
